THE CHRISTMAS CHART DEC 23rd 2012

So… 20 new entries, lots of classic xmas oldies (at least the ones I’m not fed up of hearing year after year) and a Rock Number One as Imagine Dragons finally knock off Keane.

Pet Shop Boys get their, ooh, must be 10th Top 10 of the year! Something of a record I think for previously uncharted tracks, barring the Beatles reissue campaign of 1976. Top xmas track is the gorgeous Chris Rea perennial, which I loved in 1988 when it stiffed, and have loved more with the passing years, it makes me feel all gooey inside.

Steps get a 2nd Top 10, 13 years or so after the first. Big climbs for Rudimental and Robbie Williams. Judging by the number of records out this week that failed to make the Top 40 I really would advise no-one to bother releasing anything after mid-dec until the new year, it’s the kiss of death! The Hillsborough cover isn’t anywhere near as good as The Hollies, but then multi-artist covers never are as good as the originals, and it’s not bad at all. Two versions of Sleigh Ride chart, the Phil Spector version from the classic 60’s Christmas Gift To You album, and a brand new version from fun. 4th Top 20 of the year.

There’s even some new acts debuting amongst the oldies, like Solange, Guida, Andy Burrows…

DEC 2nd 2012

So – 5 weeks for Keane at the top. I just dont get bored with it. Biggest injustice of the year that it was a complete flop, and radio treated like it had the plague. The earlier singles off the album were merely good and at least got Radio 2 play. Hey ho, what do radio programmers know…

Girls Aloud up to 2, their 12th Top 10, Pink up to 8, her 8th Top 10, the late Poly Styrene gets a rare new Christmas Top 10 hit, and gives her a return after 34 years (with punk group X Ray Spex). Meanwhile Imagine Dragons leap up 44 places now it’s available and charting, hooray! Epic.

Gemma Ray gets her 3rd Top 20 of the year, and still waiting for a breakthrough in the real world. Rihanna re-enters as it starts to grow on me again. Highest new entry is Rudimental, while Caro Emerald sings along to the late Brook Benton 60’s forgotten xmas goodie. I’m mystified why the same dozen xmas records enter the chart each year in the same order, when there are so many others to pick from that never get played (by radio of course – I refer back to my comments about radio programmers and the panic attacks they get at the thought that their target audience might switch off if they play something they worry said targets might not like)..

11th November 2012

This is the most competitive chart in a couple of years thanks to Buzzjack website listed charts. Headed by the amazing Woodkid record which finally climbs to the top, even though I still love Keane just as much: Run Boy Run is brilliantly constructed, from the starting bell chimes, the frantic drum beats, the singing, the strings, and the climax mixing all of the elements building to a grand finale. Fab!

The Wanted shoot up to 3, a great dancepop track, their 3rd great single so far (plus some decent ones). Straight in at 8 is new act Kristina Train, classy, classy, classy. Ive downloaded off itunes a load this week, including that one, which is why some are going back up and re-entering. David Bowie meanwhile now heads the oldies at 9. I’m ashamed to say when it originally came out, despite being a fan, and despite previously having 2 Number Ones and 7 Top 10’s, this peaked only at 14 in 1977. It’s one of his classics of course…

Good climbs for fun and Bobby Womack, and new entries from great new hits (and acts) Asaf Avidan, and Imagine Dragons with US Hot 100 goodie Radioactive. I hope to download it soon… Madness go Top 40, and extend their run of Top 40 hits to 33 years, while the late Poly Styrene returns to the Top 40 for the first time in 33 years. 1979 was a great time for music…

Pink, and other lower chart entries are all lower than they deserve to be, due to so many great singles about, and those dropping out really still should be in the chart (just like last week’s drop-outs!). I really can’t list 100 though!

4th November 2012

Even more chart info this week, last week pos/highest pos/wks on chart/song/artist/my sales so far

A 3rd week at the top for Keane, still love it, ditto 3 weeks for Woodkid at 2, modern greats just holding off a 90’s classic which originally peaked at 2 in 1991. Can Massive Attack go all the way this time, or will my two current loves keep it off? Meanwhile my two summer classics hold onto the Top 5 at 4 & 5!

I’ll be seeing Bond this week, maybe Adele can do it…. Meanwhile Robbie’s best single in a few years bounces back after XFactor, Labrinth gets his 4th Top 10, Emili Sande her 3rd, while also getting the highest climber, rocketing 70 to 14 with Naughty Boy. Swedish House Mafia finally get into the Top 10 too.

Highest new entry at 19 is Disclosure, just ahead of the Wanted at 22, Lana Del Ray gets 2 in the 30, and The Rolling Stones make my Top 20 for the first time with new material since 1983, when Undercover Of The Night went Top 10. 29 years is a long time to wait…! Talking of the 80’s Richard Marx returns with a Katy Perry cover, first Top 40 for about 20 years, Girls Aloud keep their run of hits intact after a break, and Bobby Womack gets a Top 40 after trying for 25 years or more with a raspy soul goodie.

The charts are still chock a block with goodies, so others have yet to chart (who need to), and this week Ive included the drop-outs to show that – most of those dropping out I still like, or need to hear again after not hearing them 2 or 3 weeks, they aren’t actually dropping out because i’m fed up with them. I’m not!

23rd Sept 2012

The Pop scene just improves weekly at the moment, it’s great fun, full of poptastiuc new singles and veterans returning with good stuff…

I’ve said it before, but I’ve been doing this chart lark for 44 years, age 10. Pop comes n goes, ebbs n flows, good times and not so good times. The first half of the year wasn’t that great overall, bar some gigantic singles, but it’s picked up massively lately. The entire Top 10 would have been number one in my chart earlier in the year, spread out over 6 months, so it’s tough theyve all collided!

So, 4 weeks at 1, for the fabulous fun record, and 4 at 2 for the nearly-as-fabulous Of Monsters & Men. Gemma Ray gets her 2nd Top 3 of the year, Sparks get their biggest hit since the mid-90’s, Deacon Blue get the biggest of their career (since the late 80’s). Keane get the highest new entry, I’m mystified by the continuing poor chart performances for the consistently good run of singles they have.

Pet Shop still flood my chart with new singles, album & EP tracks, the new album is lovely. Robbie has a high climber, and Joe Cocker enters, joining Jeff Lynne for new stuff from 60’s veterans.

A chart update of current faves: the current pop scene has some brilliant pop records in it, this whole top 5 all deserve to be number ones. Great stuff, with more new singles out and shortly to enter high, I’ll post more in a fortnight. I’m 54, and still passionate about pop!

The Pnau re-imagining of old Elton John tracks is fab, they are also known as Empire Of The Sun and had some great stuff a few years back. The most consistently great act of the last27 years are back at 6 (I’m biased, but they are always brilliant: Pet Shop Boys have never made a bad record, and the quality has never dipped, even if music styles have changed, they always inhabited their own 80’s sound. Peculiarly British-sounding, the most talented British act of the 80’s. Including The Smiths….
