Dropping out songs from Barry White, Donny Osmond, ABC, Whitesnake, Maxi Priest, Voice of the Beehive, Bananarama, MARRS, Sly & Family Stone & Housemartins, in what is a very volatile chart sparked as always by the pre-xmas rush of singles releases.

Oldies from The Beatles getting the number one deserved but never had (because it missed the start of my charts by 9 months) and Nat King Cole. The ultimate Christmas favourite debuts at a modest 33 – and eventually went on to hit number one during one of it’s many many chart re-entries. Quite a few of these were inspired by the holiday in California in September (listening to USA radio), and a lot were just never UK hits anyway, so no room for UK big hits at the time from Communards, Whitney, Astley & others.

Here’s an October 18th 1987 chart…Note a key track from MARRS which influenced pop music to come.

Time for a 1987 update: 25 years ago this week I went to the American Southwest, hired a car, motels, and did LA to SF via Vegas/Yosemite and much en route.
