2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 3,000 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 5 years to get that many views.

Top 100 of 2012

Tenerife holiday 2012

I’ve not included records that peaked before Jan 2012, nor oldies (whether new to the charts or not), they have to be less than 2 years old and peak during 2012, but it’s total sales including 2011 sales except for 2 records that hit number one in both 2011 and 2012 – and Ive felt it only fair to just show their sales for each year (as technically they first peaked in 2011 and wouldn’t otherwise show in 2012 charts – Princess Of China and Titanium therefore have more total sales than shown here, while hits like Turn Me On (David Guetta) feature only in 2011 Top 100 as it hit number 1 in 2011 but not in 2012 (even though it’s chart peak in the real world was 2012). Phew!

A few stats:

Princess Of China has one of the largest ever calendar year totals. Train, fun. and Rihanna have 2 in the Top 20. The longest year-end run of hits are The Beach Boys (1969) Glen Campbell (1969) Elton John (1971) Sparks (1974) Poly Styrene (1978) Bananarama (1982) Madonna (1984) and Pet Shop Boys (1985) and mention to Engelbert Humperdinck who first charted in 1968 but didnt quite hit the qualifying 250000 chart points. So lots of veterans with new stuff in there with the newer acts, hits and non-hits.

Top acts in the Top 100 are:

Coldplay (2) Rihanna (3) David Guetta/SIA (2) Train (3) fun. (2) Pink (2) Elton John vs Pnau (2) Katy Perry (2) Gemma Ray (2) Florence & The Machine (3) Labrinth (2) Carly Rae Jepson (2) Maroon 5 (2) Muse (2) Emeli Sande (3) Lana Del Ray (4 and Top current act of the year) and Nicki Minaj (2). Clear of the pack though are my perennial favourites Pet Shop Boys – they had another half dozen B sides from the double album of gems dating back to the mid-90’s chart high, but Ive excluded them and just included stuff released during 2012 – and they still have 6. I must be a fan….

Ottawa, me 1989. some of these hits remind me of the US/Canada holiday october

I last reviewed 1989 in 1995, so Ive taken that listing and amended it a bit based on some Ive grown to love since then. The second column are the Year-end positions based on chart positions at the time – so you can see how my tastes change with time.

1989, it must be said, is probably the least-good year of the 80’s, stuck as it was back in a pure pop mode for the most part and nothing new and exciting especially going on. Still some good stuff though!

Top 100 of 1997

These are the top hits of 1997, 15 years ago, based on total chart points in my charts. One day I’ll update to show how I rate them now, some records would now be higher, some lower, some missing would be in…

I think, blowing my own trumpet, I can’t be accused of preferring any one style of music, just of preferring some artists. In this list there is bhangra, opera, rock, pop, country, ballads, indie, r’n’b, rave, rap, MOR, latino, dance. I don’t care as long as it’s got something great about it. 1997 was a good year.

I thank you.

My First Live Pop Group – Jigsaw

OK, I was at College – Bishop Grossteste College Of Education, now Lincoln University more than likely – it was 1978 or thereabouts, and i was 20 or so. I’d never seen a live concert, bizarrely, but the student union pulled in this group to entertain the students. Actually, I rather enjoyed them as a first small-scale experience. While Jigsaw could only count 2 hits in their repertoire, the sweet soulful If I had To Away, and their forgotten epic pop classic Sky High (even a hit in the USA and an oldie that needs a new breathe of life), they also had a great song wot they wrote for Candlewick Green, and hit in the far superior fab version by Saint Etienne, Who Do You Think You Are. Live, they were fun. I think they even did Sky High twice, well it was worth it! If I was doing proper research I’d check out the main vocalist/songwriters names (the late Clive Scott and Des Dyer, it turns out, Des going on to do many Eurovision UK entries in the 80’s)! Anyway they were good live and good on record, hooray!

The Best 100 of 1995

number 81

We went back to Singapore in 1995 after a 24-year-gap, and it was in the process of wiping out the (much more charming and pretty) old colonial/Chinese/Malay buldings in favour of (much-more comfortable) clean modern high-rise. Both our old houses were still standing at that time, though one has since gone. Jalan Limau Perut still stands though.

meanwhile, many of the songs I heard on the Round The World tour featrure in this list of the songs I liked at the time – this based on chart-points, and my tastes have changed a bit, some wouldn’t now feature, and others would, but it’s largely a good summary of the year…
