The Best 100 of 1995

number 81

We went back to Singapore in 1995 after a 24-year-gap, and it was in the process of wiping out the (much more charming and pretty) old colonial/Chinese/Malay buldings in favour of (much-more comfortable) clean modern high-rise. Both our old houses were still standing at that time, though one has since gone. Jalan Limau Perut still stands though.

meanwhile, many of the songs I heard on the Round The World tour featrure in this list of the songs I liked at the time – this based on chart-points, and my tastes have changed a bit, some wouldn’t now feature, and others would, but it’s largely a good summary of the year…

  1. Great list, John!
Nice to see McAlmont & Butler charted at 4. I was a huge fan of this song back in ’95.
What a great year it was!!! I was 24 (fantastic age for living!) and i was into Brit pop. I was following every new song, watching ITV Chart Show regularly and going out with my boss’ secretary… 🙂
Been a Blur man then (actually so i am now). Though i was a little bit disappointed with “The Great Escape” release, still loved most of its songs (Best Days, Charmless Man, Top Man, The Universal, It Could Be You).
Elastica, Supergrass and Pulp were my most favourites bands at the time. And Blur and Paul Weller, for sure…
Fantastic come back from Human League in that year too, trip hop classics from Portishead and Tricky…
Good year for pop music as well. Back For Good is still my fave Take That’s track. I’ve never liked Scream, but always considered Earth Song as one of the greatest Michael Jackson’s song. Coolio’s reworking of Stevie Wonder’s “Pastime Paradise” was fabulous too.

    • thanks Andre, I totally agree, “Yes” is one of the great records of the 90’s, and I loved Blur, Pulp, Supergrass & co too. Back For Good was a shock – before Pray I had little time for Take That, and Ive never understood why so many people hate Earth Song!

24 is a great age to be, wish I was 24 again! My 24 was 1982, but as I was a bit emotionally retarded/late developer/unemployed in the early 80’s after leaving college, the 90’s were more of a social decade for me too:)

      cheers!
      john

      • As for “Earth Song”, i think people hate it not because of music (which is great, actually). It’s all because of Michael’s video and controversial BRIT Awards performance with this song. It was too pompous… All those children in the chorus… That scandal with child sexual abuse allegations (where Michael has failed to save his reputation) was quite recent then… I believe some people treated his performance like a rich man’s outrage upon spiritual values… Anyway, it topped the UK Singles Chart for six weeks, so i wouldn’t say that public reaction to this song was too much negative. However it could have been better if not Michael’s damaged image of the time.

  2. Yes, I think you’re right with all those comments, Andre, well said:)
