Top 100 of 2012

Tenerife holiday 2012

I’ve not included records that peaked before Jan 2012, nor oldies (whether new to the charts or not), they have to be less than 2 years old and peak during 2012, but it’s total sales including 2011 sales except for 2 records that hit number one in both 2011 and 2012 – and Ive felt it only fair to just show their sales for each year (as technically they first peaked in 2011 and wouldn’t otherwise show in 2012 charts – Princess Of China and Titanium therefore have more total sales than shown here, while hits like Turn Me On (David Guetta) feature only in 2011 Top 100 as it hit number 1 in 2011 but not in 2012 (even though it’s chart peak in the real world was 2012). Phew!

A few stats:

Princess Of China has one of the largest ever calendar year totals. Train, fun. and Rihanna have 2 in the Top 20. The longest year-end run of hits are The Beach Boys (1969) Glen Campbell (1969) Elton John (1971) Sparks (1974) Poly Styrene (1978) Bananarama (1982) Madonna (1984) and Pet Shop Boys (1985) and mention to Engelbert Humperdinck who first charted in 1968 but didnt quite hit the qualifying 250000 chart points. So lots of veterans with new stuff in there with the newer acts, hits and non-hits.

Top acts in the Top 100 are:

Coldplay (2) Rihanna (3) David Guetta/SIA (2) Train (3) fun. (2) Pink (2) Elton John vs Pnau (2) Katy Perry (2) Gemma Ray (2) Florence & The Machine (3) Labrinth (2) Carly Rae Jepson (2) Maroon 5 (2) Muse (2) Emeli Sande (3) Lana Del Ray (4 and Top current act of the year) and Nicki Minaj (2). Clear of the pack though are my perennial favourites Pet Shop Boys – they had another half dozen B sides from the double album of gems dating back to the mid-90’s chart high, but Ive excluded them and just included stuff released during 2012 – and they still have 6. I must be a fan….

  1. Hi, John!
So far i’m still too lazy to compile my own yearly Chart 🙂 Though i’m sure that Gotye/Kimbra will be somewhere in my Top10. The other thing i’m sure is that PICKING UP THE PIECES by Paloma Faith is the No.1 single of the year and also the best single of the whole Alternative Charts history.
Some of my No.1s on your list: UNDER THE WESTWAY (23), RUNAWAYS (37), SKYFALL (38), CELEBRATE (48), BLUE JEANS (76) SIMPLE SONG (91).
Interestingly that Keane with their 15 weeks on Chart have managed to outsell Gotye/Kimbra which spent 49 weeks there!!!

  2. Hi Andrey, well I hope to see your chart when you get the time:) I generally love Paloma Faith, but I didnt get as excited by her second album, her first album was brilliant and the singles off it (and album tracks) did well in my charts, New York was a big hit, but I think I will find Ive under-rated Picking Up The Pieces probably due to high expectations! 8 Number Ones of yours in my list is pretty good 🙂

I have an unusual “extra” sales boost for records that I have purchased (like Keane) of 25,000 for a number one over ones that I haven’t (Gotye – unfairly because I was expecting it to be on a NOW album, so I havent actually bought it yet – but I will), so Keane got 7 times 25000 more than Gotye, but Gotye really ought to be higher! Gotye will get a boost next week cos I watched the video again today and its still brilliant. 🙂

    cheers!
    john
