1978 John’s Monthly (week by week) charts

Yes this is me, 1978-ish, student.

26th DEC 1978

Christmas was usually spent in Liverpool at my grandma’s council flat, my time spent under a blanket upstairs watching my black & white portable TV. With a whole 3 channels to pick from I was spoilt for choice as ITV and BBC were intent on putting all the best shows and films on at the same time, the bast*rds! No video you see, so that was it, you missed it forever – it seemed at the time.

Sally Oldfield rockets up to 5 just as her brother enters at 16 with 4 of his recent hits, not for the last time, either. Dury rockets up to 12, so there’s a race for the top for early January going on… Funk classic from Funkadelic enters, Clash shoot up to 47 with one of their more dreary tracks, Manilow emotes in at the lower end with a classic re-write, while another Barry covers Billy Joel pretty resonably while Bill shoots up himself, as it were, to 37. Rocky Sharpe join the 50’s revivalists, and Shalamar debut with a great soul dance track.

Xmas TV was all about films, really, Xmas TOTP (as shown this week on BBC), new sci-fi series Blake’s 7, and a xmas showing of Wizard Of Oz. I wonder if that will become a tradition…..?

19th DEC 1978

I was packing up from student digs to head home to mansfield for Christmas TV deluge and prezzies. Buzzcocks get another Top 20, novelty YMCA goes Top 3 – you’ve probably never heard of it! – and Earth Wind & Fire just beat out Elton’s lovely tribute to a young motorcycle courier who’d died in an accident, as highest new entry.

Quo get to 12 with a forgotten record, Livvie goes Top 40 with her first post-Grease single, it was a bit moody and I liked it. The best (and forgotten) version of a christmas classic enters for The Eagles, Blockbuster movie Superman gets a single hit out of it, Paul Evans (who’d had an early 60’s hit) has an unexpected chart comeback, and a classic enters for Father Abraham. Just kidding. Ian Dury, obviously!

TV, new show with a loveable alien and manic stand-up new frontman Robin Williams (Mork And Mindy) entered with a bang. Williams was only ever as good as this first season in movies where he has free manic reign (usually animated films).

12th DEC 1978

In which a tarty disco dancer with a novelty Kenny Everett-sponsored sci-fi risque theme gets to the top. Hey it was catchy! Sarah Brightman would get another chart-topper in a very very different style one day…!

ELO were huge in 1978, so it was great to see an EP of chart-flops and chrt-hits get a go at the chart. All of them were hits in the proper (John’s) charts, as so they should have been especially the gorgeous Strange Magic and Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. Hot Chocolate enter with a sweet ballad from a musical-that-never-was (I think, Dear Anyone), while sneaking in at 75, Mike Oldfield’s sis Sally with a faaaabulous minor chart hit (UK). Not minor in mine….

5th DEC 1978

Rod Stewart gets his first chart-topper – a bit ironic given how many great singles he’d had between 1971 and 1974 – with a disco-riff famous wiggler. Kenny Everett immortalised it for Brits of a certain age. Boney M round off a mega-year with an instant christmas classic, a cover of the song that was the UK number one (for Harry Belafonte) when I was born, and whaddya know, it was back for my 21st in January. I like to think I’m special laugh.gif

The Bee Gees round off an even bigger year with a Top 10 hit. It’s hard to get much bigger than the Bee Gees were in 1978, unless your name is “Beatles” or “Elvis” or “Jackson”. There used to be a TV show I loved called Doctor Who, and someone did a disco version of the theme, in here into the 40. I wonder what happened to that show….

Chaka Khan enters after a gap of a few years (in my charts) or debuts (in the UK charts) with a bonfide disco classic. Well, funk disco really as opposed to eurodiscocheese, say, of Patrick Juvet.

On TV lots of repeats and very little new stuff, apart from Soap and MASH, but a bit of Shakespeare in there just to counterpoint my love of one-liners (Groucho Marx and Woody Allen).

28th Nov 1978

A 3rd week at the top for the brilliant Rat Trap, beats the UK’s run, and X-Ray Spex leap up to 3, Blondie 6 and glorious cheese of Dollar and Sarah Brightman just below. Classic dance anthem from the brilliant Nile Rodgers & co rocket in at 16, 2 different songs called Promises, and worth mentioning forgotten stomping rock-dance anthem East River, well ahead of it’s time. Let’s ignore my infatuation with the very gay I Love America, more of an infatuation with America than the record as I should by rights have been living in Wisconsin Waukesha Uni at this time for 3 months, like my mate was, grumble mumble!

TV! 1. Star Trek: Dagger Of The Mind (I love Trek, you might notice) 2. Soap (sunday ep) 3. Monty Python 4. Soap (Fri ep) 5. Top Of The Pops 6. Soylent Green (Charlton Heston: Soylent Green is people!”) 7. MASH 8. Shalako (Sean Connery western movie, he gave up accents after this one) 9. Rockford Files 10. Day Of The Triffids (presume the 60’s movie which was great)

21st Nov 1978

2nd week at the top for the Rats, with Rod leaping and challenging at 2, pretty much as in the UK charts. Most punk/new wave doing better in my charts, and most novelty doing worse, and a few American hits that never charted here sprinkled about, notably Anne Murray 2 or 3 months before it finally became a UK hit. Another famous classic slipping in at the bottom, as it were, YMCA…

TV? 1. Star Trek: The Man Trap (first episode ever broadcast in the USA) 2. Top Of The Pops (musta been a goodie, bet it was a banned one!) 3. MASH 4. Monty Python 5. New Avengers 6. Happy Days 7. Curse Of The Black Widow Spider (movie, I think..?) 8. Doctor Who 9. Rockford Files 10. Rebel Without A Cause (film, James Dean)

14th Nov 1978

Fairly obviously saw Grease this week – a random jump back up for Summer Nights even though Rat Trap was the top single. PIL getting higher than Sex Pistols did, Cars in from nowhere at 10, and lots of new New Wave lower down, plus a couple of future toppers…

my TV charts? 1. Star Trek: Space Seed (Ricardo Montalban as Khan) 2. MASH 3. Monty Python 4. New Avengers 5. Ritchie Brockelman) a great Rockford Files spin-off that never caught on 6. Soap 7. Happy Days (“Heyyyyyy!”) 8. Rockford Files 9. The Good Life 10. Top Of The Pops

Had a request to make the charts more friendly to read, so trying it out, that means weekly charts with last week figs in brackets

This week – a classic live metal oldie featuring Lemmie on vocals hits the top. It made my top 10 in 1972 but with nostlagia for the early 70’s strong (I know how long ago 6 years seems when you’re 20 – and recent when you’re much much older!). Livvie is the highest new entry just ahead of my first trip to the pictures to see the movie – see how that affects the chart next week cool.gif

On TV? Err actually I’m so sad I used to have TV charts back then too! This week’s number one was Star Trek: Shore Leave, with Soap (fab sitcom written by creator of the Golden Girls) at 2 – Billy Crystal starred as one of the very first sympathetic gay characters on TV. 3 was Monty Python, 4 was Top Of The Pops 5 Dr Who 6 Going Straight (Porridge spin-off) 7 The Good Life 8 Multicoloured Swap Shop 8 Most Wanted and 10 It Aint Half Hot Mum. I was young! 20 year-olds like kids shows! That’s my excuse anyway…

OCTOBER 1978

Those Summer Nights were drawing in, but for me the City ones ruled as Abba had their last week at the top to be pushed out by a classic ELO single from their most classic album Out Of The Blue, and what a great album it is. Disco, of course, doing well with the now-classic You Make Me Feel at 2 and the less-classic Donna Summer version of McCarthur Park (Richard Harris has yet to chart with his superior original Jimmy Webb classic) also at 2. Gerry Rafferty’s criminally ignored follow-up to Baker Street was a big US hit, and The Beatles got Sgt Pepper a belated single release and a top 10 hit (here). The last two weeks of the month made up for the rather lacklustre start for fresh new entries, as loads of classics pop out of nowhere….

SEPTEMBER 1978
I started to listen avidly to Paul Gambaccini’s American countdown about this time, which is why a lot more American hits appear, and enter earlier than in the UK charts, I was also in student digs, living with a family in Lincoln for my 2nd year at College watching Star Trek re-runs, visiting my student girlie friends in their digs and soooo jealous that my best mate was in Wisconsin on a student exchange programme and they wouldnt let me go. The main reason I chose Lincoln was for that and they changed the rules so degree students weren’t eligible. Boooo! Me, I instead got done by the police for riding a bike with no lights cos I was scared of getting mugged like another student had been. We were so poor we couldnt afford lights…smile.gif

Chartwise, it was all War Of The Worlds, 10CC and Abba, with a healthy dose of fab new wave and disco. Some of those acts banished by the BBC in the re-runs appear in my charts however. I can’t excuse Arthur & Hylda though, it was funny, what, for a week? four weeks is unforgiveable!

JULY 1978Running a few weeks behind the Top Of The Pops repeats on the BBC, must try and catch up. No 9 weeks for Olivia & John at the top in here, it’s Manfred Mann, The Motors and Clout – a bit of a South African invasion for two of them! The music scene was ab fab to coin a phrase, Stones, Kate, and oodles of other goodies at the top, and plenty of obscure non-chart stuff at the bottom. It wouldn’t be 1978 without a Bee Gees song entering (Rare Earth) and pop folk was making inroads with Lindisfarne and Renaissance.Ah good days! Feel free to compare with the BBC charts of the time – mine’s better. No, honestly, great records peak higher and average ones lower, and way more records enter the charts.1st July ChartDAVY’S ON THE ROAD AGAIN Manfred Mann’s Earthband 1 5 6 14 21

MAY 1978

May 1978 was hot. The weather was hot and the music scene was hot. I was ending my first year at College in Lincoln and music was changing in the charts. Punk may have happened in 1977 but New Wave was the real chart invasion, and it started at the end of May. There have been some online comments about the poor standard of tracks on recent Top Of The Pops from May 1978 shown on the BBC – well, my chart positions of the time support those comments. That’s how I saw it too obviously….

But just check out My Top 10 tracks in the last week: The top 3 are all classic Saturday Night Fever tracks, as the Bee Gees songs absolutely and categorically ruled the world’s singles and albums charts and boosted the disco clubbing scene. Then check out the high debuts from New Wave/punk records, and also lower down from new acts. No gradual chart climbs for Patti Smith, Plastic Bertrand, and Stranglers, it’s wham bam! right in. Singles sales were hitting historic highs and the charts changed to reflect that; the UK charts were expanded to 75, and my charts did the same, 50 went to 60 on 13th May and then 75 on the 20th. They’ve stayed 75 ever since, bar a brief trial at 100 in 1983

MARCH 1978

I’m biased, but hey a bunch of classics all under-performing at the top end of my charts cos they all had the misfortune to clash with the greatest record of all time. That’ll be “Baker Street” then….the record that has quite literally followed me around the world and throughout my life, no matter which country I travel to it’s on the radio, no matter what period of time, it’s on the radio, and more often than not it features in “greatest record of all time” charts. It’s perfect from every sublime sax and perfect guitar solo to each gentle melody and word. Everyone is entitled to an opinion on music, of course, but if you don’t like Baker Street you need to be tied to a rack and forced to listen to Teletubbies Say Eh Oh for 24 hours. Believe me, it’ll sound much better after that. smile.gif

Abba dominating, a bit of pop, rock, country, classical, funk, disco, soul, reggae, crooners, music hall, MOR, glam, new wave, punk, sci-fi movie themes, egyptian-styled pop n rock and anything else I could get to hear on the radio or TV.

Some of these will be obscure, so think of them as bonuses you wont find in the UK singles chart of the time.smile.gif

JANUARY

BBC4 are repeating Top Of The Pops 1978, this is what I was liking then, influenced by TOTP but more-so radio…

OK it’s all here to see, I was 20, doing a degree, and The Muppets are in the Top 10! Oh it was funny!

It’s not the only ancient song in the chart either, proving that young people can still like old music, Dooley Wilson and Bing Crosby from the 1940’s – that would be like some 20-year-old listing any of these records today….

To my credit? lots of new wave stuff that never charted, some American hits that never charted, and big brilliant tracks from The Baby’s and others that just should have been bigger. Bob Marley wasnt a legend at this time, he was one of many great reggae acts, and Donna Summer was never content with one hit single she often had 2 at the same time. Sort of Rihanna-like you might say…

  1. Great Chart, John!
Some time it’s funny how certain song flashes into my memory. This morning i was humming:
“Belfast Belfast When the country rings the leaving bell you’re lost Belfast Belfast When the hate you have For one another’s past”o
And few hours later i had found your post with Belfast in the Chart 🙂
    Shocking!
I’m very pleased to see Costello in Top 10.
Don’t remember that particular Muppet’s track. Should check on YouTube.
As for “Only Women Bleed”, i prefer the original Alice Cooper version from Welcome to My Nightmare album. Alice has got some pleasant balads (You & Me from Lace and Whiskey is another one that stroke me).

    Cheers,
    Andrey

    • Thanks Andre, I think Belfast sort of hooks into your brain, even after just a reference to it!

I like the Alice version too, though Julie Covington visited our College to do a (blunt) play at the time, so I had a soft spot for her. The Muppets is a tribute to 19th century music hall, but they had a cult-type student appeal, much like The Fonz, girl with tennis balls poster, and Star wars.
      cheers!
      john:)
