1993 Monthly Charts (my charts of the time)

The Florida Mall

I have yet to re-play my records and tapes of the early 90’s, consequently Ive forgotten a lot of minor tracks that don’t get radio play or stick in the mind or are on albums. A shame, as there seem to be some classics and quite a few I’d love to revisit…

APRIL 1993

Lots of oldies and a mixed bag of genres, if I was into anything especially it was Lulu’s new soul/dance album and D:Ream’s gorgeous dance hit, and note a plethora of Gimme Shelter covers (from an album/singles project) and a forgotten group called The Lemon Trees. One of the band still runs the only indie record shop in my local area in Dorset (where I got most of my ex-chart singles at the time), though I stand to be corrected, and I believe another member ended up in a long songwriting partnership with little known boy band Take That singer Robbie someone – Guy something or other.

MAY 1993

It’s a 3-way domination, D:Ream, Duran & Pet Shop Boys, along with 2 hippie 60’s classics, pop & Prog just keeping out Disney & Dave Clark 5. I can’t speak for others but I’m perfectly happy having The Jungle Book side by side with Tull, and Runrig with Pet Shop Boys…

JUNE 1993

No shocks here – Pet Shop Boys rule with the debut fab single off the fab album Very. Abba at 2, also no shock there (a great 1981 album track that should have been a UK single), more surprising is in at 9 in the last week of June: One More Time, a Swedish Melodifestivalen 2-time entrants – key facts, Swedish, and the son of Abba’s Benny Andersson in the band. Great single.

JULY 1993

Fairly static at the top of my charts, Abba, Pet Shop Boys (no surprises!) and OMD having a 13th year of Number Ones. Reggae was making something of chart comeback generally at this time as the music scene paused for breath until Britpop popped up. Lots of dance hits too, of course – when each new music phase runs out of steam the default position is either manufactured teeny pop and/or dance music (because there is always a market for these amongst teens). Sound familiar in 2013?

AUGUST 1993

Take That, and that naughty video, dominating the pop scene this month, with the late Freddie dance remix just behind, and minor hit from the Bee Gees (dance but they by this time weren’t a contemporary dance act, not that I cared, it was great). I even went to the Radio One Roadshow, back in the good ol seaside days, and filmed the Gibb boys getting off a helicopter, signing autographs with fans (Robin mainly, he was always the most obliging) and then performing this and You Win Again (at Exmouth). It wasn’t their first number one (that would have been Massachussets had I compiled charts then) and certainly wasn’t their last.

SEPTEMBER 1993

Pet Shop Boys rule with a gay anthem, amazingly it was a cover of the Village People’s rather mundane 1979 original. The boys turned it into something epic, and also both uplifting and sad (if you are aware of the intent behind it), though it also marked the point they stopped being a popular pop band and being a decliningly popular gay critically acclaimed enduring treasure.

Elsewhere, Mariah Carey amazed with a fabulous record, Billy Joel made the last of his great records, Massive Attack’s Shara Nelson, and metal classics Motorhead tried to challenge the top.

OCTOBER 1993

One of the most volatile chart months ever, with a massive turnover of new entries and chart runs cut short. Mostly, it has to be said, due to an invasion of chart oldies as I’d been a fan of music for 30 years nearly, and a sense of history was there big-time. That, and a lack of an exciting new music scene. Haddaway grabbed a long run at the top with a great dance track, keeping off some other great records like Relight My Fire, Play Dead, and an early Texas minor hit goodie.

7th Nov 1993

I started my 3rd Florida holiday this week, as I firmly entered my American scifi TV love phase, shows like Deep Space 9 months ahead of UK broadcast, hooray! ** I became a big fan of oldies American radio discovering loads of 60’s and 70’s gems ** I became obsessed with theme park rides. Couldn’t get enough, the wilder the ride the better, the higher the rollercoaster the better, loved Epcot, MGM and Universal Studios. Adrenalin rush….!

It was all about the latest Bee Gees revival for me. In those days if you didnt have a hit for a few years it was considered a comeback – The Bees had about 6 or 7! These days it’s not unusual to have a prolonged chart-break.. Ayway, I’d seen them on the Radio 1 roadshow and they were 60’s childhood popstar faves who were still going strong with a luvverly melodic ballad. MOR, but, hey a good melody is not a crime!

My chart meanwhile suddenly got frantic, loadsaclimbers headed by the very late Jimmy Durante and his Sleepless In Seattle version of the Dooley Wilson Casablanca classic, which had charted in 1977 ** The Levellers get their biggest hit ** Bowie gets his umpteenth Top 10 ** Captain Hollywood Project rocket from 72 to 8 ** Cilla & Dusty highest entry for a bit of 60’s nostalgia, loved seeing them together and the record deserved better ** The Goodmen up to 39, later borrowed by Simply Red to great effect ** Elton & Kiki finally get that second duet hit 17 years on. Most of the big ballad chart hits of the day struggling in my charts, however, just a tad TOO overblown and dull to excite me much.

14th Nov 1993

Second week of the Florida holiday, driving down the Keys and over to the west coast Tampa Bay, and the US radio saturation had a major affect on my charts – mostly in the form of re-entries, as the US charts were pretty slow in those days. UK hits, as I’d not heard them 2 weeks, dropped. Up to the top, though, one of Pet Shop Boys greatest records: Go West had originally peaked at 11 in 1979 for the Village People, but the gay disco singsong had been transformed into a spine-tingling lament to AIDS and the also to the fall of Communism looking to the west for answers. Or it’s great to just singalong to anyway…

Meanwhile, Madonna returned to the Top 10 after a few unremarkable singles, and highest new entry US hit from the new Toni Braxton, soon to hit it in 1994, simpering as much as singing, but it seemed good at the time ** Meatloaf goes Top 20 for the first time in 11 years ** Dwight Yoakam covers Elvis country-stylee and it’s great fun ** oldies on US radio that sounded great included, Sweet Talking Guy (Chiffons), Kind Of A Drag (The Buckinghams, never a UK hit), Cracklin’ Rosie (Neil Diamond) and Build Me Up Buttercup (The Foundations) which I heard at Universal Studios..

21st Nov 1993

Back in the UK and the chart goes mad – loads of new UK hits I was getting to hear, and loads of American new tracks I taped onto cassette while I was there and replayed, so it’s a curious mix. However, Bee Gees go back up to 1 again amidst an invasion of high new entries led by 1985 classic Frankie at 2, and obscure American wholesome popstar Dino. The great one though is Blind Melon at 6, tinged with sadness from the early death of the lead singer, along with the ever-classy and marvellous Kate Bush at 7….

High Climber from Soul Asylum, still well-known, classic 1973 Doobie Brothers remixed and finally a UK hit, 1990 SAW track Lonnie Gordon pops back in, Roy Orbison covers Cyndi Lauper – or so it seems. Given that the greatest male vocalist of all-time had been dead nearly 5 years I think it’s fair to say the less-good Cyndi version and the awful Celine version were covers! ** in at 40, another Manilow remix, this time of his great OTT pseudo-classical 1978 UK hit (but actually a hit years before in the USA) Could It Be Magic. Probably Take That-related! ** finally a superstar trio plug a major movie theme tune lower down, for which they were rewarded with a huge hit and an award for dullness from me – mostly it charted due to US holiday nostalgia as it was played as an exclusive newie while I was driving the highways and byways.

28th Nov 1993

Another week at the top for the Gibbs, but in at 2 my relatively newer faves Pet Shop Boys, and Kate at 3 with her last big chart hit (for 11 years) just before that massive gap in releases ** Janet peaks at 4 with one of her best records, the very sweet Again ** Peter Sellers: yes, him! It was a reissued childhood fave comedy record version of the then-very-famous A Hard Day’s Night performed on the Beatles TV special of 1965 ** Back in, new ones from Bowie, Hall, Lulu ** Saint Etienne also jump in with one of the few 90’s xmas classics. One of the great under-rated bands of that decade.

6th DEC 1993

The charts were still chock full of Florida holiday hits but now I was back in the UK some British hits made re-entries as I got to hear them after a gap. I was about to give up golf as a hobby – I enjoyed the company, but the stress of the ball going everywhere except where I wanted it to go was too much. Snooker and darts were my pass-time of choice with the Countryside mates from work. My lifelong loves The Legion Of Super-Heroes were in the process of being killed off after a few years of grim adult reading. DC Comics like to start from scratch and ditch long-time readers to excite new young fans. Trouble is, they prefer computer games these days….

Musically, mellow Bee Gees just keeping off whimsical Pet Shop Boys and Meatloaf goes Top 5 for only the second time, and Bpwie Top 10 for the umpty-teenth time with a TV series theme which was pretty good. Highest (re)entry from dance act Cappella sounding all piano-led and repetitive and high bpm. Sign of things to come.

kd Lang, ever-under-rated, goes Top 20, and YMCA is back again with a remix, the scourge of the early 90’s, they almost always are not an improvement on the original, and frequently ruin it. Happily Saint Etienne go Top 30 with their minor christmas classic, and East 17 get the highest new proper entry with one of their run of laddy goodies.

13th DEC 1993

3rd chart-topper of the year for Pet Shop Boys, this time in witty, playful mode. The album is as good as the singles off it, the boys were peaking again!

The other big trend was oldies, and christmas-flavoured Frankie lead the pack after a string of remixes and reissues. and Mike Oldfield’s also christmassy EP. Lots of re-entries back in the UK and picking up flop singles cheap (meant I got to hear them properly and chart them more realistically). I can’t explain the Toni Braxton popularity though, must have had a bit of Florida nostalgia going on…

Returning to the top for the Gibbs, and making the Top 10 for the first time, 1978 classic from meatloaf (full-length version), along with lovely christmas gem Saint Etienne. Bad Boys Inc – to be fair I haven’t heard it for 20 years but it turned out to be a nice slice of 60’s pastiche sweet soul..
A trio of veterans enter the Top 40, and the even more veteran Cliff. The Three Musketeers is to blame for the former, christmas for the latter, but I quite liked them at the time. Bit more interesting lower down with New Order, Ice T and Take That’s christmas moaner in at 75 making sure all my change of heart during the year towards them changed right back to dismissal. A bit stagnant really chartwise….

  1. Thanks for another trip down memory lane, John!
Beginning of 1993 was quite a dull time in my life as far as i can recall it. So was my musical reminiscence of the time.
ORDINARY WORLD by Duran Duran and SWEET THING by Mick Jagger as an exception to those “nothing happens” days.
Perhaps, my music memories were more pleasant had i had more fun those months…
Great choice for Abba’s No.1, John! Was it a real EP released in the end of 1992? Can’t recall this being charted in the UK.

  2. Thanks Andre, and I’ll take “dull” anyday! My life has been anything but dull for about 11 years, a lot of it not in a good way!
You may be right though, my “dull years” were the late 90’s and I don’t have much nostalgia for them, whereas 1993 I was having fun and am fond of it:)

Abba’s “EP” wasn’t really an EP, it was Thank You For The Music re-issued with Happy New Year and The Way Old Friends Do on the B side but I’d conveniently allowed B sides to chart if they hadnt charted before…so from my point of the B sides were more interesting than the predictable TYFTM A side:)
    cheers
    john
