2013 charts Part 3 – Sept to Dec

Image

It’s a return to number one for Calvin Harris with his great dance track (don’t understand why it’s dropping so fast in the UK charts, it’s his best record!), just ahead of poor Leona Lewis, the bridesmaid once more with the only fresh-sounding Christmas song after the event. SO going to be a perennial classic! Meanwhile Christmas songs drop like flies and out, for the most part.

Highest (Re-) entry is the wonderful F.U.R.S. all very 80’s Smiths and a bit 90’s Suede-ish. Wonder why….. cool.gif (google for the answer) ** highest first-timer is Broken Bells, their second Top 20 hit ** The Rolling Stones get another 60’s classic into my Top 10 (not unusual!), while Olly jumps suddenly for yet another Top 10 hit (not unusual either!) ** Imagine Dragons get their 5th Top 40 hit, I think, 12 months on from topping my chart, while Pharrell looks to top the UK chart 7 or so months after hitting my Top 40. Hey, I’ve said it before, I know a hit when I hear one! laugh.gif

22nd Dec 2013

It’s my second all-time fave xmas classic, and the third time at the top, the one that bumped off Bo Rap from my number one in 1975 is back as I’m in reflective xmas mood, and the desert video suits the setting I was watching xmas videos in last week – sand-blasted dunes on Gran canaria. Bad news for new current xmas contender Leona Lewis who’s never come even close to the top of my chart before, but I’m sure it’s Phil Spector-ish vibe will bring it back annually.

Lack of new tracks to hear means a fairly static chart, giving Cilla an opportunity to add to her 4 top 5 hits with the Lennon/McCartney gift to her from the Beatles. Another xmas classic pops back in for the first time – The Pretenders lovely 80’s classic – as highest new entry, leaving Ed “Hobbit” Sheeran as the highest new new entry. It’s all about the oldies elsewhere though…!

15th DEC 2013

Yes, another holiday chart, as storms wash the beaches away and sand blasting the sand dunes in the wind like Lawrence Of Arabia (RIP Peter O’Toole).

Meanwhile, my chart is late and the christmas oldies invasion takes back-seat to the sudden leap of Calvin Harris, Alesso and Hurts, all getting their first ever chart-topper. Poor ol’ Gazza. 4 or 5 weeks at 2 and his new one is just outperforming Robbie’s new one to give himself competition for the top, it’s not looking hopeful he’ll get to the top now!

Leona Lewis shoots up to 3 with future xmas classic One More Sleep. When all her other records have been forgotten (barring perhaps Bleedin’ Love) this one should still be getting aired. Avicii goes Top 10, classic Greg Lake is the top xmas oldie, all brilliant pomp majesty, and sweet sarah MacLachlan goes Top 20. Pet Shop Boys touching B side to Thursday enters at 36 and X Factor winner Sam Bailey improves on Demi Lovato by making my charts. Funny she’s on the US X Factor….. In the end, Sam Bailey had no real chance of losing as she can actually sing a song in tune, unlike the kiddies up against her. She was “blessed” and “they’d dreamed of winning X Factor all their lives” and everyone cried. Just like every year then. Well done Sam on staying professional!

8th Dec 2013

Yes it’s a double top for Take That solo, never happened before! Robbie edged out the great acoustic-ish Gary song, thanks to a great performance in his BBC concert. He’s still a great entertainer and a laugh. His second number one of the year, 11th solo, and 14th in total (with Take That).

Dave Edmunds replaces himself in the Top 10, The Killers get their second of the year for 10 years of hits (2 on top) ** Calvin Harris, Alesso and especially Hurts get a huge jump ** highest new entry is a bonafide NEW xmas song! Shock! It’s good! Shock! It’s Leona Lewis! Gasp! ** Pharrell pops back in with European Number One, Happy, (charted earlier in the year for me, after Despicable Me 2) ** Wizzard pop back in the Top 40 to celebrate it’s 40th anniversary – yes it was my number one 40 years ago this week, check out the youtube video link of Top Of The Pops 73 on my Retro 1973 charts (and Slade and many others)..

And the award goes to 17-year-old DJ Martin Garrix, 14-weeks-on from entering my chart it still sounds great, exciting, catchy. Makes me want to get my own kit and become the oldest debut DJ-producer. Hopefully he inspires younger-folk to do same!

Awolnation, catchy, menacing, gives me a sore throat if I singalong. Fab. ** Slade are back: no, it comes with massive relief I can announce it’s that record, it’s the one that failed to make my charts in 1974. Everyday was a departure for Slade, after a string of glamrock hits, it was a bit of a shock to have what I considered a dirge at 16-years-old. 16-year-olds prefer a bit more liveliness. So, it’s a great song, actually, used in an advert, made the Top 100 last week, and it was the original follow-up to Merry Xmas Everybody so it will be funny if both are in my charts in a few weeks!

Highest new track is Olly Murs, continuing his great run of singles, and a high re-entry from Emeli & Rudimental, and thanks to Andrey for the Panic! At The Disco Duran-flavoured track, the video is good too, I’ve never seen someone give a great vocal performance naked before….(albeit miming, presumably, along to the recorded version, in one-take)

The Wanted finally get to the top, after running-up a few weeks, for their first ever number one. Gary beats Robbie for runners-up, giving him his biggest ever solo hit ** Keane get 3 songs in the Top 10, leading with current single over the cover and re-entry! ** Awolnation get a huge hoarse jump into the Top 10 ** Dave Edmunds gets his biggest hot since Girl’s Talk in 1979 and just to rub it in, has another Top 40 hit simultaneously ** Madness get a Top 40 entry with a several years-old cover of a 90’s Prodigy hit ** Bastille ditto, only a new cover of 2 90’s number ones in my chart – Snap! and Corona topped in 1992 and 1994 ** sneakin’ in near the bottom of the chart, 2 entries from Kim Wilde – one of which is a family affair with dad Marty, bruv Ricky and sis Roxanne. I mention it as it’s Roxanne’s first entry, Kim’s span of hits is nearly 33 years, and although Ricky and Marty were very involved in the writing and producing of Kim’s 80’s hits (Ricky was in her band) Ricky hasen’t actually had a credit (at least in my chart!) since 1974 (when he was a teen wannabee pop star with glampop Teen Wave and odd Mrs Melinski) and Marty would have charted in 1968 had I allowed non-chart hits then (with Abergavenny). So that’s sort of nearly 40 years and 45 years respectively absent. Sort of…. cool.gif

Keane! They nearly did it 9 years ago and have been climbing for 12 weeks. It’s a classic and their second number one. Lily has to settle (so far) for 16, and The Wanted for a frustrating 3rd week at 2 behind 3 different acts. Doh! ** Robbie is so far winning the Gazza chart battle, with his sweet n lovely ode to his daughter. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to like it! ** Highest entry is RL Grimes dubstepping melodically ** in at 29 is one of my teen heroes Dave Edmunds, nearly 45 years of hits now (with Love Sculpture’s epic Sabre Dance, youtube it!), a number one in 1973 (Baby I Love You done in Phil Spector-stylee), hits throughout the 70’s, and last in my charts 30 years ago with Jeff Lynne’s Slipping Away. Saw him in concert the other year too cool.gif

10th November 2013

It was very close, but The Wanted had to settle for runners-up again, the record has under-performed chartwise UK, as has Pet Shop Boys new single with Example (for their 40th Number One, 2nd out of 5 new singles this year, and Example’s first) – though at least it looks like it’s going to be their first Top 75 hit for a few years! Pet Shop Boys are unique in having 40 number ones spread over their entire career fairly evenly. Most of the greats tend to have hot periods followed by occasional flashes, but Pet Shop Boys have never gone through the menopause…

Meanwhile: Gary overtakes Robbie but it’s neck and neck Top 10, and not sure who will win that one! Keane have 3 songs in the Top 40: Somewhere Only We Know has been climbing for weeks, but it’s now joined by Lily Allen’s future smash version tucked up just behind their new single. The former is a classic song, though.

My charts are looking a bit 1973 at the moment, with lots of oldies from that year in the chart again, plus a cover of a xmas hit (first of this year) for Erasure. Gaudete was in the xmas chart 1973 along with Wizzard, Slade and Elton John’s xmas classics. No doubt soon to invade the UK charts again…

3rd November 2013 Chart

It had to be Lou Reed. Much as I love Perfect Day, it’s already topped my chart with Bowie and other various artists joining Lou, whereas Walk On The Wild Side was a very risky record for 1973, it was on the chart show, and the BBC clearly had no idea what “giving head” meant as they’d just edited out 10CC’s Rubber Bullets’ “We’ve all got balls and brains” from the Number One single. It never peaked at 1 at the time, though would have in 1977 had it been eligible (I had a student grant and was affluent enough to start buying classic old singles).

Bad news for The Wanted who have previously come close, and have to settle for runners-up and a great pop record. The charts go mad with new entries yet again and many records which should have gone up have been pushed out altogether. Boo! Toploader get their biggest hit for 12 years, Robbie his second Top 10 of the year, while mate Gazza goes top 20 for the first time ever solo (not counting “with”s and “featuring”s and “Take That”s).

Highest new entry is The Killers at 25, just ahead of Keane (who have their debut classic higher up), both of course coming up to nearly a decade of non-stop hits, both K’s, and both Greatest Hits-ing.

OCTOBER 27th 2013

It’s an unexpected chart-topper from Prefab Sprout, giving 80’s-cocktail-jazz-pop a go at the top for the first time in 25 years or so. Unbelievably they’ve never had a number one before, so those police sirens give them a good wait of 28 years. Not the longest wait ever, but it’s up there!

Moby gets his biggest hit since the late 90’s, a great gospel chorus, a bit of a theme along with #11 and #13…!

Cher gets 5 decades of Top 10 hits, she’s still great at 67. Jameela on the chart show just can’t help making snide noises about “really old people” (as she has said previously) acts in the charts (not that many of them get in, but Cher is the latest and it can’t be the song as Miley Cyrus failed to make it a hit – and she’s huge – and Cher has. Miley gets no criticism of course on the Chart Show even though she’s riding balls naked to sell her records), or records that appeal to older fans. Please either make a comment on the few poor (but target audience appealing) records sprinkled throughout the chart as well or just play the records people buy with no comment or innuendo. I guess she’s far too young to realise Rizzle Kicks (a good target audience record) is largely a re-do of EMF’s Unbelievable. Apparently her researchers have never heard of Google either. It’s only their profession, of course…

While I’m feeling a bit whingey, there are no Eminem or Justin records in my chart cos I’m getting fed up with weekly album track releases, to get a quick cheap worldwide advert for the album ahead of release. Bieber apparently intends to release the whole album weekly. Hopefully no-one will buy it once it comes out as they will already have the singles. Sorry to the fans but they are taking up chart spaces that new acts could sorely do with.

Or old acts, like Robbie’s great new single shooting up to 15. Cilla Black enters at 29 just ahead of the man who originally wrote it for her in the mid-60’s, as she gets her hits in the album chart again.

13th October 2013 chart

Back up to number one the still fabulous and obscure Better. That games company need to get their act together and make it big! Joining them higher up, the manic poprock of Gavin DeGraw (it’s essentially a Train record), and leaping up high is Quo. Quo have made my Top 10 with poppier stuff over the last 30 years, now and again, but this is their best actual rock single since 1980. They’ve done it by “borrowing” riffs from Foo Fighters and blending with the copyright Quo riffs and a great song. Prefab Sprout get their first Top 10 since 1997.

Highest new entry is from Sam Smith. He’s a great singer, so it’s bizarre that this hasn’t charted. Presumably Radio 1 haven’t playlisted it…? James Blunt goes Top 20 shock! Hey it’s a great song, poor ol James has been putting up with cliched bad gags with good humour for years, so he gets the last laugh with a bonafide Top 10 Uk hit again. Nahh na nananaaa.

Lower down, and with a cover of a 1969 posthumous Jim Reeves hit, I never would have predicted Chas n Dave would make another good record 31 years since their last one. Never say never…! Finally, sneaking in at the bottom, the sometimes good Wet Wet Wet for 26 years of hits.

5th October 2013

It’s been an erratic climb, but after it finally gets released (and so late it missed the UK Top 40) Capital Cities worldwide smash hits my top. A big raspberry to Radio One who feel it wouldnt appeal to it’s core target age group. It has everywhere else… They’ll be playing theme tunes to Spongebob Squarepants and Teletubbies next in a failed effort to reduce the listener average age (BTW that wouldn’t work either, cos Spongebob is fab and also appeals to the over 30’s!).

Pet Shop Boys 4th single off Electric gets played on Radio 2 and shoots back up my charts (Radio 2 is fab, just wish the listeners bought singles), joining CHVRCHES , Gavin DeGraw and Drake for a varied new look to the Top 10.

Highest new entry is Cher. She’s 67. She was getting playlisted on Radio One when she was a mere youngster of 52, and becoming the biggest selling pop song on the planet that year. She’s had number ones in my charts in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, and would have had two in the 60’s had I been compiling charts then (with Sonny) cos I loved (Sonny &) Cher as a kiddie, teen, young adult, adult, and beyond.

Sneaking in at the bottom end are 2 80’s regulars, Boy George & Dave (Eurythmics) Stewart, and 70’s forgotten Beatles proteges Badfinger. This track was a US hit, and last week was the featured song for the series end of Breaking Bad (and is selling pretty well as a result). Badfinger were hit by the financial troubles of Apple Records, and both of the band leaders ended up committing suicide. They hit my number one in 1971 with No Matter What and achieved songwriter immortality with Without You, as definitively covered by Nilsson (and killed by mariah carey).

29th September 2013

Better pushes down Hero for a first week at the top for new act Cat And The Menagerie. It’s as great as Hero, and if you take a listen and it sounds a bit familiar somehow, well that’ll be because it’s not a million miles away from Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know in sound. The song though isn’t like it all, it’s good in it’s own right!

Hero, like so many this week, is pushed down by sheer numbers of new downloads, even though tracks dropping havent actually dropped in my affections, it’s just a volatile chart! The Fab Capital Cities finally make the Top 3, 12 weeks on, and the haunting London Grammar Top 10 after 7 weeks. Highest entry is the dance-thomping metal of Linkin Park, and re-entering at 10 the beautiful and cinematic Goldfrapp.

BEF and Kim Wilde come back at 26 with a bonafide Top 40, Kim’s first in over a decade, BEF’s in almost 30 years (aka Heaven 17), both now stretch hits back to 1981. Lower down and back after over a decade away is Lisa Stansfield, spans her hits back to 1989…

Hero does it again. A gorgeous song. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. Gorgeous! Keeps off 2 old classics, a returning Beatle and young whippersnapper from the top.

Highest new entry is another great song from new act Cat and The Menagerie (wish it had been Canary though). Wikipedia is calling me…. Not far behind, huge American star Gavin DeGraw with his second hit, very Train-like and fab.

15th Sept 2013

New number one is from American band and unknown pleasure Family Of The Year. What a great song! What a fab melody!

The only record in my Top 5 not to make number one is Macca’s “New” one, which sounds like it could have come right off a late 60’s Beatles album, yes he’s back on form again, hooray! Such a good song, a youtube cover version of it (thanks Andrey!) pops in at 61. Meanwhile Shelby Lynn re-enters with her 1999 number 4 hit, from her classic album I Am Shelby Lynn, and a sort of heart-wrenching Phil Spector-ish rock country ballad. Hard to define, always has been.

Katy Perry gets another Top 10, it’s rare she doesn’t frankly. It used to be rare Gaga didn’t, but Applause is more of a polite smattering of claps than wholehearted applause, though to be fair she would be in the Top 20 easily if there weren’t so many great records leap-frogging her. Like John Newman’s newie, another winner.

Elton’s also back on form, following on from his great BRIT’s icon show, his early 70’s-styled Home Again charts giving him a sweet 42 years of hits. Elton is a former hero, and still a man after my own heart – as many stated during the show, he is always obsessively looking for great new music/new acts. Me too (though I also love the oldies too).

Kim Wilde, languishing at 75 till I can download it, with BEF, both have 32 years of chart hits, & The Polyphonic Spree are back after a string of chart hits in 2002/2003.

8th Sept 2013

Yes, despite loads of great new records around, possibly the greatest record of the 80’s gets to the top again (1985, 1986 and now). Tears For Fears has not just one, not two, but three hooks, perfectly constructed pop. Achingly great.

In at 4, an instant great melody, and possibly the best song ever called Hero (Discuss!). Lovely. Another new act at 7, Radio One fave Dan Croll, also with strong melodies to it. Hey I like a pop tune, what can I say! Just to keep up the oldies, Paul “Beatles” McCartney gets his 45 years of new Top 10 hits, his first since 2006, and his 6th consecutive decade of Top 10 hits.

Shane Filan does what Westlife did only twice in their entire career – make my Top 20! I wasn’t a fan generally… Meanwhile Bryan Ferry gets his first Top 30 hit in 20 years with a charming 1920’s ragtime version of his classic 70’s rockdance stomper. Once upon a time he was a major hero of mine, his 70’s career is just awesome, and influential (with and without Roxy Music), but in the 80’s he opted for pleasant MOR, before descending into Blandness since. Its not as great as the original of course, but it’s a move in the right direction.

1st September 2013

It was a very close Top 4, but Pet Shop Boys get that number one slot for the 41st time with a literate witty catchy classically-riffed ditty. I’ve lost count, actually, but the topper run is from January 1986, includes most years that they have released an album (and more) and they’ve had multiple toppers each of the last 4 decades, not to mention loads with and for other acts. I’m a fan.

The only active artist I’m even more of a fan of is Paul McCartney, who has a surprise poppy Mark-Ronson-produced “New” Top 40 hit – it’s been many a long year since Macca did a chirpy single. Macca topped my first compiled chart with a band called The Beatles, who would also have been topping my charts in 1963 (had I been compiling them) – I went to the cinema to see A Hard Days Night in 1964 at age 6, I got quite worried when John Lennon appeared to have been sucked down the bath plug-hole. A memory that stuck with me!

50 years a fan, but there’s an older act in the Top 20 – Duane Eddy from the actual 1950’s. Paul? He’s just a youngster!

Highest new entry is the hot Naughty Boy (and Emeli), while La La La goes up (because I still love it to absolute bits) and becomes the biggest chart-points record of 2013, just ahead of Postiljonen. It’s a crime the album didnt go to number one this week!

Elsewhere Ub40 get their 5th hit of the year with a cover of Paul davidson’s reggae cover of the Allman Brothers early 70’s hippie rock American hit. The reggae version is better. Prefab Sprout chart for the first time in over a decade, always classy, and nearly 30 years of chart hits. Just outside the 75 are several good UK chart hits about to storm the chart (Ive just heard them properly!)

Hooray!

  1. Great Chart, John!
I love this new Macca’s song. I believe Mark Ronson did a fantastic work here! In fact, everything he touches turn into gold. Perhaps, the best producer nowadays.
I wonder what made such a big jumper out of classic Tears For Fears track this week?
John, that song from Prefab Sprout, is it a new material?

    • Thanks Andrey,

Mark Ronson is a great producer, hope the whole (;part-produced) album is good, I’d love Macca to have a proper hit! Tears For Fears jumped cos there werent any oldies I liked better (and it’s an all-time fave) – I try to spread them out in my chart so they don’t take over and just bide their time till there’s a space amongst the new ones:)

Prefab Sprout is a new track, exclusively played on BBC Radio 2 this week (I think), hopefully out before too long!

      cheers
      john
