2014 charts part 1

30th March 2014

2 weeks for Blue Kylie, just holding off the leap up from the best British Eurovision song since chart-topper Love City Groove in 1995, as Children Of The Universe hits 2. Singerpurear, in the Buzzjack Song Contest, is hoping to qualify for the first time with the fab Ariana And The Rose, up at 4. I wouldn’t want to influence anyone to vote for it, but this week it’s Top 5 in both the UK Upfront Club Top 40 and Commercial Pop Top 30, ahead of all those pretenders clogging up the singles chart. Yes, cool people love Ariana, and Buzzjack voters ARE cool, right?

Blatant plug over, it’s in at 5 for George Michael’s greatest, most moving and emotional record, and 1986 huge number one for me. It made the UK Archive Top 5 last week which is enough for me to rechart it, and help it into my all-time Top 100 “sales” hits. It’s WAY better than his current single…

Lots of returning Top 20 acts climbing up, and one from 1970 – Crabby Appleton, biker pop metal missing my charts at the time on the grounds that I only got to hear it for the first time 3 years ago. HAIM pop back with their strongest track to date, while at the lower end some oldies are back, Prince (with actress Zooey), Macca “Beatles” McCartney, Engelbert with his second duet (with Neil Sedaka, absent unjustly for decades, here with his great song The Hungry Years), and finally goddess Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders fame. Meanwhile Blue Swede go up a bit after heavy coverage in a forthcoming comic-book superhero “Guardians Of The Galaxy” blockbuster movie tr

23rd March 2014

It’s Kylie, getting that 9th number one after all, 3 years after Aphrodite did it (Kylie has a long tradition of picking the wrong singles off albums, though I love Into The Blue even if it didn’t set the charts alight). In terms of female singers, only Madonna has more toppers (of course).

The top 10 shuffle a bit, with Ariana And The Rose shooting up to 6 with a subtle EDM moody grower, while U2 get their first top 10 since 2009, and their 25th. Often derided for doing the right thing (for some reason do-gooders seem to incur the wrath of cynics, cynics who do eff-all to make the world a better place, they just moan about anyone that tries), the lads are one of the great bands of music.

Paloma gets her 7th Top 10, Human League pop back with 1981 number one at 20, first time it’s been back since 2011. Takes me back to the frozen snowy winter of December 1981 – how cold was it in Mansfield? I bought Abba’s The Visitors album in town (vinyl of course) and it had warped by the time I got home. Another Buzzjack comp oldie at 26, from obscure American rock band Crabby Appleton who had a minor US hit in 1970 with this forgotten goodie, Matt Cardle pops in unexpectedly at 28, and Pixie Lott returns to my Top 40 after a 4-year absence. Lower down, the Kaisers are welcome back – Coming home!

16th March 2014

41 years late, Stealers Wheel finally get to Number 1 – a classic that I mildly liked at the time (peaked at 20 in 1973), and after Gerry Rafferty (the main man) hit my number one on 3 occasions with all-time-fave Baker Street (1978, 1990, 2011), and again with Get It Right Next Time in 1979, it became a major favourite oldie, not hurt by Quentin Tarantino’s movie exposure and other media spotlights. I’ve been waiting for it to sell enough in one week to make the Official Charts Company archive Top 40, which it did last week. Hooray! Stuck In The Middle With You at 1 at last.

Bad news for Kylie, as she’s halted at 2, and otherwise she’d have had her 9th number 1 in 26 years, instead it’s her first number 2 since Wow in 2008. 2 more entries for her, the new album title track, and one with Enrique Iglesias, giving him 15 years of chart hits – his actual current UK chart hit being absent in all it’s Pitbullishness – including a number one, but not one you’d expect, no I went for Be With You in 2000, in sync with the USA.

Elsewhere the fab new UK Eurovision entry is straight in at 10 for Molly, fingers-crossed for her as it’s our best shot at a win since Come Back, Jessica Garlick’s 2002 entry. Dan Croll gets a 2nd Top 10 to join his UK album chart entry, U2, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Coldplay, Dario G and Shirley Bassey all get a Top 20 entry to add to their lists of John hits and all of them have had previous number ones. You can’t say that’s not varied!

New entries, Roberta Flack’s back again thanks to BBC promos, third time round (1972, 2010, 2014) for her. She was in the picture round of a pub quiz I went to the other week. Given that she’s not been in the media for 30 years plus, no team got the answer right. I only wish I’d thought of exclaiming “Well that’s the first time ever I saw her face!” out loud when the answer was announced. Instead of 20 minutes later in the car. Imelda May, a Johnny Cash unreleased gem and Robbie Williams sneak in at the lower end, meanwhile.

9th March 2014

10 years since last making my charts, 13 years after peaking at 4 (and 3 a year later) with the great Days Go By, Dirty Vegas finally get a belated number one. It’s terrif. Parralox, meanwhile, a track a few years old and very obviously inspired by Depeche Mode’s People Are People shoots up to 5, exciting sounds, as also a few years old track from Ladytron debuting in the Top 40 belatedly.

A big climber for fab ballad Say Something up at 9, a first Top 10 for A Great Big World, and only Christina’s 4th, including her debut Genie In A Bottle which peaked at 8. The Pierces taster for the next album goes to 10 and a 5th Top 10 – so far they only do Top 10’s depending on whether next single Believe In Me recovers when it goes on sale. The very under-rated Dan Croll shoots up to 13, a Radio 1 fave, I really don’t understand why he doesn’t sell records. Maybe Radio 2 needs to push him. Maybe he’s too quirky.

Highest new entry? Coldplay, obviously. Had to be. Bound to go higher than 23! Dario G had a number one in 1998, and he’s back at 30 along with diva legend Dame Shirley Bassey, and a jolly good romp it is too. U2 are back in the 40, with a very retro-U2-sounding Invisible, more early 80’s than late 80’s. Great stuff.

2nd March 2014

It’s the easy-listening 50-year-old Japanese language international hit that clinches it. 50 years ago, when I wasn’t compiling charts and watching Doctor Who and Thank Your Lucky Stars with the pop stars of the day (as written in my school books of the time, yes I have them still) I loved this record, so it’s overdue a chart-topper. Kyu tragically died young in a horrific airline crash.

Dirty Vegas last had a big hit over a decade ago, but shoot up to 2 with the fab Let The Night. The video features a dancing middle-aged man playing his vinyl records. Errr, me, anyone?! Speaking of clubbing, I was out on the town for the first time in ages and ages last night (RVT Vauxhall of course) and had a great time dancing to top oldies and some recent pop hits, including Rebel Rebel, which re-enters after dropping out last week – shockingly, it’s the first time this Bowie gem has made my Top 10, 40 years late. I would have recharted Icona Pop, Gorillaz, Diana Ross, Depeche Mode and Disco Tex among many others if I had the excuse (and chart room) as they sounded fab. I was happy to see such a wide range of people and ages there, including some very young folk singing along happily to Clash and other classics. Hooray! I was less happy to see full beards making a big comeback fashion-wise. I haven’t seen so many big beards since the last ZZ Top convention was in town.

Other charts stuff: Lana gets yet another top 3 with a Disney classic; Blue Swede feature in a TV ad and pop back into my charts 40 years after making my Top 10. It was an American Number 1 in 1974, and the Swedish band rather cheekily stole the exact arrangement that Jonathan King created in 1971 (which topped my charts) – the oog a cha ga’s – when he covered the 1969 B.J.Thomas country and pop hit (in the USA); Lapsley (Scouse band) shoot into my Top 20 with a gorgeous track; Christina Aguilera has a rare Top 40 hit (these days) lending a vocal hand; Starship’s back again thanks to a cat in a basket, 29 years on, and lastly, Engelbert and Cliff are back, duetting for the first time both having featured in my first 1968 charts. 45 years of new hits for both, then!

23rd FEB 2014

Back up for a 2nd week, Indila, still sounding good, and joined in the Top 3 by Elbow – it’s not even the track now pushed by Radio 2, but it’s a bit of an epic, covering a range of moods and multiple electric guitars throbbing deliciously. Almost as good as the famous Elbow track for me! The BRITS effect on my charts? Katy Perry going that bit higher with Dark Horse, and returning to her usual Top 10 place after the bit floppy Unconditionally. That applies time 3 for Kylie, and 25 years of Top 10’s with the odd floppy track (but never missed my chart I think). Phoenix, meanwhile get a second Top 10, it’s fab.

Highest new entry for new band The Pretty Reckless, Radio listed, and pretty damn good. New at 34, a Swahili record, joining the foreign language invasion of the Top 40, Hooray! Lots of new names jumping in, and some oldies include George Michael’s cover of a Terence Trent D’Arby hit, Mary J. Blige back after some time away, and 20-odd years on the charts now, while David Guetta brings back Bang Bang to the charts for the 3rd version, after Cher and Nancy Sinatra’s fab versions.

16th FEB 2014

It’s a Canadian orchestra leader born in 1908 at the top, with his easy-listening instrumental classic. Taken from a 1959 teen-flick A Summer Place, it took on a world-wide life of it’s own, and has since been featured in the Batman movie, Buffy and The Simpsons, and currently the Butlins advert. A US number one in 1960, at 54 years old it’s the oldest record in number of years to top my chart (and 2nd-oldest chronologically, behind Neil Sedaka‘s Oh Carol). It was a major early childhood fave tune (I can’t resist a great melody) from about age 6, as was other tuneful classic in at 8 from Kyu Sakamoto, a cute 21-year-old Japanese singer who also topped the US charts in 1963 with this great song, the melody so strong it overcome the acute disadvantage of being sung in Japanese. Covered by oodles of folk, notably Mary J Blige using it in “Everything”, and featured in Malcolm In The Middle, it still occasionally crops up (but not enough!). Kyu sadly was one of the 520 people to die in the terrible 1985 Japan Airlines Flight 123 disaster, the largest loss of life in a single plane crash. Amazingly, 4 people survived, 2 girls and 2 women, though I was additionally shocked to hear Kyu was on board too when it came on the news.

Back in current chart-mood, Indila is unlucky to be knocked off (still strong), and the charts generally are highly competitive, there’s about 20 bubbling under the Top 75 desperate to get in! Highest new song is a second hit for Phoenix, Lana Del Ray covers an old Disney song in her own style, The Pierces get 2 in the 40, Bruno Mars is back (as always making the Top 40), and Maxi Priest reggaes back into the Top 40 after a decade or two away. Lower down, Bowie’s back with an oldie and a newie, Jenifer brings a second French-language song into the charts, to join Japanese and Korean records, and U2 sneak in for a 33-year run of hits, pretty much all have charted I think.

9th Feb 2014

A bit of everything this week, genre-wise and worldwide-wise, headed by the gorgeous French-language Indila beating off Cher from the top. Percy faith, childhood fave instrumental still has smooth-strings tuneful appeal at 2, and Elbow, Bruce place a bit of rock and ballad into the Top 10 along with sould-retro sampling dance Chris malinchak.

Highest new entry at 20 is Russian-American obscure (but fab) Elizaveta, the album produced by someone who produces Katy Perry, Pink & other superstars. Look him up, and hoping Elizaveta gets up there too. Class pop-soul-operatic appeal I say! Elsewhere The Pierces are back, vocal harmony poprock appeal in a West Coast fashion, a pretty Eastern-flavoured ballad from IU, and Baccara adding a bit of oldie Spanish cheese disco. Acts from all over the world, in short! Fab. Pity the UK singles chart isn’t anything like as varied. Pretty much dance, dance, dance of varying styles, or huge hits hanging about forever …

2nd FEB 2014

It’s a 4th week at Number one for Cher, that means of her 6 previous chart-toppers (2 with Sonny) only Believe at 5 weeks had a longer run at the top: The others being I Got You Babe, All I Ever Need Is You, Dark Lady, Just Like Jesse James, One By One. All of them are completely-different in sound. Not bad for a lass that was having hits when I was 7 years old. About the time I was loving the Percy Faith Butlin’s ad track behind her at 2… Keeping the oldie theme going, ELO go top 3 with an unreleased track, (WHAT were they thinking, it’s fab!) giving Jeff 42 years of top 3 hits – the first one (a number one, first of 14) is at 15!

Back in 2014, Alesso gets his second Top 10 hit following his number one with Calvin Harris, and Onerepublic get their 6th Top 10 (Ryan plus however many as songwriter!). Erasure get their 1st Top 10 in 7 years, and extend the run to 28 years (2 number ones, Vince with an additional one with Yazoo). Big jump for Buzzjack winner Indila and her French language Gotye-rhythmed gem, and Kylie’s back new at 16 in a very volatile chart – will it become her 10th number one?

Elsewhere, Paloma’s back (hooray!) and with guess who? Yes, him, Pharrell, 6th Top 40 inside about 10 months. Workaholic much! There’s some Animals sprinkled about still – Martin Garrix theme for a couple of Foxes, a cat, some Pet Shops boys), a tiger head (a gem), vultures and a dragon. Tenuous that last one… Dario G is also back after 11 years, with a Dame in tow. This Dame has been occasionally troubling my charts since 1971, though my dad bought her 1950’s hits album when I was 8, our first record player 1966, Liverpool one-bed flat slum. It was so small the mice were hunch-backed. Boom boom. Oh the tales I could tell, honestly you’d be weeping in sympathy, or with laughter…

26th JAN 2014

A 3rd week at the top for Cher, and one of her greatest vocal performances on one of her greatest records. Pity it’s not a hit anywhere… I should also note the second-oldest woman to get a number one with new material (behind Petula Clark).

Highest new entry is a theme from a Butlins advert, or as I know it, Theme From A Summer Place. Percy Faith had a huge hit with it 50 years ago, and it’s a great toon and delicious strings. I loved it when I was 6 and I love it still. Highest proper new entry is a marathon track from Elbow, oh those guitars breaking-in are sooo spine-tingly! Followed by a French huge hit from Indila and a Springsteen album track that’s better than the first single, and a dance track from Chris Malinchak. I heard it on Radio One and thought, “Diana Ross and Eddie Kendricks on Radio 1? Shorely shome mishtake!”. It’s a sample from 1969 number 2 John fave I’m Gonna Make You Love Me but with no actual credit. I find that very annoying, as their vocal contribution is more than, say, an 8-second half-hearted rap from Rentarapper or a quick one-line vocal from Singalongacashregister, who then claim a “featuring” hit out of it. So I’ve given them credit, as I always do for substantial uncredited contributions.

19th JAN 2014

Second week at the top for Cher. It’s a shame the track isn’t getting heavy exposure, it’s just so perfect…banjo, electric guitar, frantic BMP clap-heavy rhythm, gypsy “I’m a survivor and it ain’t over till it’s over” Cher defiance at ageism lyrics, unusual breaks, catchy chorus and then that flamenco guitar, electric guitar and abrupt ending. Fab! One of her best ever records.

Gary gets, meanwhile his fourth solo Top 5 (albeit only one alone) and Elton gets his first actual new top 5 hit since either the similarly-jaunty I Don’t Feel Like Dancing (if you count his uncredited Scissor Sisters blockbuster) or for 20 years (The Lion King singles).

Keane get yet another Top 10 to add to the long run, Robbie ditto, and Lily gets two at the same time to make it 4 in 6 months. Meanwhile movie American Hustle has a great soundtrack and adds two instant Top 20 hits for ELO, a re-recording of their first ever hit (and number one in my chart 42 years ago) 10538 Overture (minus Roy Wood, sadly), and a newly-released rocking gem from the vaults Long Black Road at 12 for 45 years or so of Jeff Lynne charting (with The Move).

Beyonce gets a high new entry with her long-awaited move into more interesting musical areas, Erasure come up with another good pop release (28 years of Top 40 hits, 33 for Vince Clarke), Nile Rodgers gets yet another modern dance credit with Tensnake, and Southampton gal Foxes pops in too .

Yes, it’s a shock leap for Cher with her great stomping dance tune, a lil’ bit hee haww country, a lil’ bit stompy, a lot lyrically very This Is Me for Cher, and a bit of flamenco guitar thrown in to the mix. Crackin’, and her first topper since Believe, her 4th solo topper and 6th in all, for a 42 year span. Just pipped at the post, the fab Broken Bells with the best Bee Gees record (well soundalike at any rate, not actually) since the Bee Gees final single This Is Where I Came In.

Elsewhere Jamie Scott gets his 2nd Top 10, previously hit 2 with the awesome Graffiti6 track Annie You Save Me. Avril gets her first ever Top 10, Chad his 2nd. Kim Wilde goes top 40 again, 33 years on from Kids In America, Kylie n Katy are back too, and earth Wind & Fire have a 35th anniversary goodie disco oldie back in (from the movie Last Vegas, and Top Of The Pops 1979).

5th JAN 2014

It’s a new year, which always mean add one to my age and goodbye to the xmas songs, usually, bar a couple of hangovers. I did go to London to see the fireworks, but no actual hangovers just a couple of bacardi’s.

3rd week at the top for the fab Calvin, Alessi, Hurts dance track. It’s still very strong, the only real competition is from a 1977 Bowie number 3 in my chart, largely instrumental and EDM of it’s time, it was ground-breaking and unlike anything before it, and this time round it goes one better. Gaga’s back on form, another Top 3, her 6th, and R Kelly’s first ever.

Broken Bells get a second Top 10, Pharrell a 4th or 5th (depending on what you count as him), and highest new entry is a second hit for Graffiti6’s Jamie Scott (with Wally Lopez) and a great dance track. Incredibly, Killers Mr Brightside enters at 20 and unless my chart compiling went haywire in 2004 (quite possible till I can check the charts later in the year) it’s the first time it’s done that! Agh!

Gazza’s Let Me Go drops out the 20, but also enters – for Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger. A sort of Lily & Herman Munster showbiz couple to me, it would be fair to say not a big fan of either, but this is surprisingly good! Gazza meanwhile enters with Elton into the 20, so fair swap. Cher gets a new entry in yet another new year, exactly as she did 40 years ago this week (see my 1974 Retro section charts!), and was still around with her Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves 42 years ago. Legend!
