My 1999 Charts – January

Shuttle Launch Titusville Florida 1998

3rd JAN 1999

The usual January chart lethargy not in evidence this month – largely thanks to oldies, though, the whole Top 3 are classics that didn’t quite get to Number One first time round but are lining up this time round, headed by Prince as we moved into 1999, the last “19” something year, and one that had gone top 10 in 1983 and 1985, so it was appropriate starting the year with his 3rd number one.

In at 32, a great fun rock song of the time, and 49 All Seeing I give Tony Christie a bit of chart action 27 years after his last (Amarillo). I wonder if anyone remembers Amarillo…? Divine Comedy, always amusing, go top 40 with an ode to coach travel, and Isaac Hayes finally gets a 3rd hit 23 years after the last one – pity it was a novelty song though! Garbage rocket up 50 places, still on their hot streak of albums and singles, they never were less than good. Best ignore the remixes and covers elsewhere though, for the most part.

10th JAN 1999

Robbie belatedly gets classic Angels to the top – I’d under-estimated it first time round, but a few boozy pub karaoke singalongs later (Others, not me!) had shown me it’s genuine charms – along with seeing Robbie wipe the floor with the competition at Net Aid. Yes, Net Aid – Wembley Stadium, a host of superstars like George Michael, Bowie, Eurythmics, Stereophonics & many others gathered together in a Live Aid attempt to do good and gather cash for Africa. Problem is, no-one remembers it! Well, I was there, and Robbie gave one of the great Live performances I’d seen. I became a fan.

So, the entire Top 5 is oldies, all classics that should have been chart-toppers, though Culture Club’s album track from 1983 was a US single, deservedly, with one great guitar solo in it. Oasis meanwhile also bizarrely fail to release The Masterplan as a single, but I chart it anyway. Artists choice of singles sometimes leaves me frustrated! Supercar and Fat Boy Slim get some Top 10 dance action, but new stuff still a bit thing on the ground..

17th JAN 1999

3rd oldie at the top – Paul Weller gets his first solo topper, the sublime Wild Wood from 1993, though previously topped with the Jam (Going Underground) and Style Council (You’re The Best Thing). Meanwhile boy band (and future Timberlake superstar) enter at 33 with a great pop song, and there are some pretty bland superstar duets sprinkled here and there.

24th JAN 1999

4th oldie in a row, this time a 60’s metal anthem from Easy Rider, and minor 1969 UK hit. I kid you not, but I’d just returned from Florida, and at Disney Epcot none other than Steppenwolf were performing at the small lakeside arena. Who woulda thought? Anyway, enough to boost it to my number one as it re-charted in the UK. Terrorvision shoot into the Top 10 with their alcohol anthem, and B52’s join the oldies invasion in the Top 10 with their party anthem. 60’s Crooner goodie from Engelbert, meanwhile joins Tony Christie in the Top 20 and Sinatra lower down, making for a right old mix of oldies.

Unlikely comeback time: Blondie! What a joy to have them back! PJ Harvey has one of her occasional goodies pop in, Duran Duran and Howard Jones join Blondie in the charts, and Three Degrees get a dance remix of 1978 hit Giving Up Giving In to join the numerous other dance remixes and covers around, best of which is George & Mary’s cover of Stevie’s As. Just scraping in at the bottom, a bit of a dance classic for Armand Van Helden….

At last! A New Number One! The Offspring deserved it, a great pop record, whimsical and catchy. As was Terrorvision at 3. Armand Van Helden rockets up to 17, Blur are back with Tender, Hole go Top 50, Divine Comedy Top 20, and the Mavericks do a fabulous Roy Orbison impression and Orbison-styled track, and a lot of rather forgettable minor hits otherwise…
