7th FEB 1999

Yet another classic oldie at the top, this time party classic Love Shack. The B52’s debuted with a Rock Lobster in 1979, hit my charts with this in 1989 and 1990, and by 1999 it had turned into a bit of an anthem. Funniest skit on the radio of the 90’s was current hits done in the style of the fabulous B52’s.

Blondie in the Top 10, hooray! Blur into the Top 20. Divine Comedy get a top 10.

14th FEB 1999

And Yet Another Oldie at the top: Steppenwolf, rock classic, returns to the top for a second week. At least a new spanking stomping dance tune is at 2! Blondie at 4, gives them a hit to stand with their 70’s and 80’s classics. Oh, yes, new entry from a new pop princess last week – Britney Spears. Yes it’s fifteen years! OMG, as I believe they say! Classic song that it is, shooting up to 8 is only fair. ‘Nsync meanwhile, same popwriters/producers as Britney, are just as good at 10. OMG! Yes Justin Timberlake, Hollywood actor megastar and pop star, was popping it with Britney 15 years ago. In the charts I mean…

Lenny Kravitz is back in the 20 with a great poprock toon, and Shawn Mullins debuts inside the 20 with a great Lullaby. New entry land and Cher at 40 keeps the hits a-coming. Actually, might as well just assume any chart has Cher in it, barring 2002 to 2012! Whitney Houston is in at 33. Worth repeating, cos for 12 months she managed the feat of being actually great: this record was the first of several bona-fide soul records, and they were all good. No more pomp and showing off the size of her range with bland ballads, no actual proper pop and actual proper emotion. Shame it turned out to be drug fuelled.

The Cardigans hit their stride with the fab ballad Erase/Rewind, (how quaint), Neil (Crowded House) Finn does yet another version of Johnny Nash (see 1994 comments), 2-Pac raps in Late, Mansun are still good, Alanis is Joining in, and the Corrs just pop in ahead of REM and Manics. I stood next to Jim Corr once at the Radio One roadshow while he chatted to a workmate, backstage with Shelley “Tin Tin Out” Nelson’s mum while she was on stage. Hobnobbing wiv da stars, eh? Job perk of the time….

21st FEB 1999Hooray, a new record at the top! A dance classic, yay! Still sounds great to my ears… And in at 2, Robbie (I had the album) giving him yet another track in the charts, good ol’ pop. Lauryn Hill, ex of Fugees, gets her biggest solo hit. Watch out for those tax returns girlfriend! Lucid go top 20 with a classic dance track, as do Barenaked Ladies for one week. Madonna slowly climbs into the 40, Roxette have one of their occasional comeback periods, and George & Mary J take Stevie’s As slowly up the charts too.

28th FEB 1999

Another newie at the top, and Robbie’s 2nd of the year already, by this stage he was racking them up by the month! Britney at 2, teen pop rools, not so sure about the pigtails and school uniform though…! Cardigans rocket to 9, Blur continue their run of Top 10 hits, Whitney gets a rare Top 12 hit, Kula Shaker shoot it up at 16 for one last fling in the higher placings. Everlast has a new entry with a great record, largely obscure these days, sadly, and that about it for notables. 1999 isn’t generally one of my favourite years for music, and much of the new stuff at the lower end is rather forgettable (not counting long-running tracks), though the big hits are still fab.
