My 2014 Charts – April to June

29th June 2014

Yes, still a 4th week on top for Miami Horror, and still no other record coming close to unseating it. Love it. I went to see X-Men again, which has boosted Time In A Bottle again, I just love that Quicksilver slow-mo scene, the record sets it off beautifully. Elsewhere Ryan Tedder gets another Top 10 song (aka Ella Henderson), and highest new entry is back for the third time thanks to a car advert. Horse With No Name peaked in my top 5 January 1972, then popped back again for another top 20 run the other year.

Other returns this week? Another Star and Silver Lady both charted October 1977, so it’s fitting they should come back again together. Stevie Wonder made my Top 10 first time round – but was a minor UK hit – and it’s back selling well again thanks to the World Cup coverage. No idea why Silver Lady is selling again though, but it is! Imelda May gets another Top 20 hit, that’s at least 4 to date, about time she had a proper single hit, great guitar work in this retro rocker.

Milky Chance are also back a year on from initially charting (thanks to Buzzjack). Begs two questions, as ever – why do Pan European blockbusters do so badly in the BJSC, and why do the fr*gg*n’ record companies take so f**k*n long to release them in the UK when every other country gets them immediately. Release them when they are hot, not when potential record buyers have become bored with them, or acquired it another way. Record labels are such d**ks. It’s not as if Milky Chance are appearing all over TV and radio to promote…..

22nd June 2014

Yes, a third easy week on top for the gorgeous Miami Horror track, play it every day, still not bored, there’s so much in it to love. Runner-up is Hang The DJ (hello Morrissey/Marr) and the Eels-styled Dark Dark Is The Night, a great record. Kylie gets a quick 3rd Top 5 in 3 months with her charity non-album single – the credits seem to suggest it’s Scissor Sisters helping out again. Breaking into the 10 at last, is Royksopp and Robyn, giving Robyn 16 years of Top 10 hits in my charts.

That’s nothing though, Chicago make my Top 40 with the smooth jazz sounds of Now, it’s their 8th Top 40 hit, but the first 7 were spread over 20 years (1990 being the last time they did it), so, not exactly prolific as far as my charts go, but they did have a number one in 1976 (If You Leave Me Now) and can claim 44 years of hits…! The Kooks have also had 7 chart hits, their biggest being She Moves In Her Own Way in 2006 at 13 – the current track is one mere place behind that (and it’s a better record) so fingers-crossed next week!

Tiesto first made my charts in 2004, but Naked, I mean Wasted, is the biggest by far for him at 18. I still say it’s basically a cover version though. Finally, popping in at the rear end of the chart is Rik Mayall’s footie song, a hit following his untimely death. Bit of a hero to me, but music-wise not really troubled my chart much, though his span of hits is now 28 years.

15th June 2014

Yet another big influx of new entries, many buzzjack song contest related. Australian Miami Horror hold easily at the top for a 2nd week by virtue of it being ab fab, I so hope Brian Wilson gets to hear it, it’s pure gorgeousness. This is bad news for Ed Sheeran who’s held off the top at 2, though it’s fairly obvious from previous Sheeran tracks and previous Pharrell Williams tracks who the bulk of the credit goes to. The only non-buzzjack track to go top 10 is James, adding to a fair few they racked up in the 90’s.

The Kooks are back with a great single after being AWL for some years, in at 27, while Fryars get a second Top 40 hit (with Rae Morris), and Nicki Minaj returns after a short break at 38. Others popping back after a break: SIA, Dolly Parton, Sharon Corr (first solo hit outside the string of Corrs hits) sounding a bit Carpenters, and Chicago, back after nearly 25 years away from my charts. Considering it’s nearly 45 years since they first charted, that’s worth mentioning, as is the fact that they sound exactly the same….

8th June 2014

It’s been a long time since I went mad instantly mad on a new record, enough that it enters my chart at 1 – but it’s happened this week with Miami Horror. As the week went on (and after voting) I became more obsessed by it. It’s essentailly a cross between Empire Of The Sun and The Beach Boys, with a heavenly vocal melody and harmony that Brian Wilson would kill for. The structure of the song is fabulous, and the production of the record has so much packed into it, little nuances, a great bridge, an instrumental flourish, some 60’s references in the sounds, it’s like a pure piece of delicious summer joy wrapped up in a perfect little wrapper. Goooooorgeous!

19 new entries, most of them Buzzjack songs from both semis, shove a load of great records down the chart, including Time In A Bottle, a different piece of heaven in mood. Ed Sheeran gets his first top 5 with the great Sing, First Aid Kit get their 2nd Top 10 in a month with a fab country ballad, and the Pierces (now fully released) get a second go inside the top 10, also their second one of the year. Michael Jackson gets his 19th Top 10 of the 21st Century, but only 4 of them have made it for the first time, the last being 2010 with Akon.

James get their biggest hit since the remix of Sit Down, at 14, Kylie’s got her 4th top 40 of the year with a charity track, Chrissie Hynde gets her 2nd top 40 of the year, and 35 years of hits. Coldplay also get their second top 40 hit of 2014 – but only just, and they haven’t had many singles peak lower! Enrique’s back again, 15 years on, and even having Flo Rida on the record doesn’t stop it being a bit of fun. Mostly though, it’s a cast of new unknowns thanks to the Buzzjack Song Contest. Cheers everyone!

1st June 2014

It’s not Paloma. It’s Jim Croce and his classic Time In A Bottle, as featured in X Men: Days Of Future Past, the scene where Quicksilver runs round the walls of the prison room, shifting bullets, moving arms, cool as cucumber, everything in slow-motion. The song fitted beautifully. Poor old singer-songwriter Jim died in a plane crash in 1973 just as his career was taking off. He made my charts a few times, and the US charts especially, though never made it in the UK, appallingly. Time In A Bottle gave him a posthumous American number one in 1974 and it peaked at 15 in my charts. So, 40 years on it finally gets to the top, where it should have gone first time round, thanks to the fabulous X Men.

Paulo Nutini shoots into the Top 3 for the second time (Candy was the last one) with his terrific Marvin Gaye-ish new single, while Ed Sheeran gets his biggest hit shooting up to 17, on the very Justin Timberlake-sounding Sing (the intro is pure Like I Love You which peaked at 2). Justin’s not fussed though he has 2 tracks higher than that this week! The other oldie from X Men (Roberta Flack) pops back in for a 4th chart run. Highest new track is Tiesto. I say new, it sounds a lot like a 2008 track from Ida Maria I Like You Much Better When You’re Naked. Maybe it’s just me….

25th May 2014

…and Tove pip Dove (aka Paloma) but it was close in a 3-way fight with Molly still strong. Tove-Lo is just so insistent it forces it’s way in. 2 returns to the top 10, Shy’m still sounds great and bounces back, and Klingande is highest new entry at 6 (well, actually a top 10 re-entry but that was last year and this is a new chart run) now that it’s finally at long last out in the UK. It’s only been about 63 years waiting.

There’s much chart-shuffling going on as so many of them still sound good to me, leaving not much room for new stuff, though the Pierces album taster which peaked at 10 a couple of months ago is now a single and rebounds back in. Wisin goes Top 40, a banging Spanish dance track with J-Lo and Ricky Martin, I’m hoping (no doubt in vain) that it crosses over. It certainly won’t get picked up by the BBC, not in a million years, they never pick up Spanish-language tracks. While I’m BBC moaning, what’s with the Chart Show removal yet again for the rubbish One Big Weekend. I haven’t heard so much breathless undeserving toadying sycophantic hyperbole for minor performers, well, not since the last One Big Weekend. Slaps all round, especially for the ongoing constant apologies and warning for all the bullshit’s and assorted other swearwords bandied around liberally by Rita Ora and various other kiddie pop acts. Shut up apologising. If you don’t want kids to hear swearwords don’t broadcast it, the singers who should be grateful for the opportunity to self-promote will soon stop doing it if they think they won’t get out on the radio. It’s nothing new, Madonna did it 20 years ago, and she used the F word several dozen times loudly and clearly in between songs, not during.

As you may tell, I’m annoyed at the Chart Show being dropped.

18th May 2014

It’s Paloma, her 2nd Number One exactly 5 years since bumped off Agnes’ Release Me from my top spot with New York. Molly is at 2, heading 4 Eurovision Top 10’s, one of the highest ever Top 10 influxes. In the UK chart, all four have made it Top 40, the biggest Eurovision total since 1974. Hooray! To be honest the entire Top 5 could easily be my number one this week, loving them all, and the UK chart is sounding better than it has in ages.

First Aid Kit get the highest new entry as their old track leaves the Top 10 (unfairly, it still sounds great), My Silver Lining has been picked up by Radio 2 (yay!). Belinda Carlisle gets her 3rd Top 20 of the last year or so, it’s a great ballad that builds nicely. If Adele was singing it instead it would be huge everywhere. Pharrell’s back in the 40, with Marilyn Monroe. That’s a duet I never thought I’d see. Kidding! Justin is also in the top 40, giving him 2, and 90’s stalwarts James are back, new track at 37 Moving On joining Sit Down in my charts. Not to be left out, Chrissie Hynde has 2, Kylie 3, A Great Big World 2, and that’s the end of the chart results.

11th May 2014

Yes it’s Eurovision, and it was the battle of the big ballads this year. Sadly, Molly only came 17th though I’m going to be seeing what the final televote result would have been (for instance the UK televote – with a large Polish community – gave the 12 points to Poland, but they got none whatsoever because a handful of “experts” didn’t like it. Neither did i but that’s not the point!).

Anyway it’s still a great song and has a 3rd week atop my list, joined by the gorgeous Netherlands country ballad, an instant fave the minute I heard it. I have suspicions the almost-as-good Conchita (in at 13) may have been overhauled in the popular vote by them, judging by the itunes sales. With First Aid Kit going up to 5, that’s 2 country tunes in the Top 5, but the big news is a massive climb for Paloma Faith 62 to 2, chasing her second number one (New York the first).

Kylie replaces herself in the top 10, Tove Lo enter the 10 along with Ingrid Michaelson – if it wasn’t for the joint male vocalists on 2 tracks it would be a female whitewash! Other Eurovision, the 4th great ballad this year, from Sweden (Sanna Nielsen) also goes Top 20, Rex The Dog sniffs at the heels of the Top 10, Emmelie de Forest follows up her 2013 win, and Royksopp and Robyn go top 40 – 15 years of hits for Robyn now!

4th May 2014

Molly presides over an all-female Top 10 (plus Prince as part of his male-female duet), and she goes into Eurovision week in a strong position in my chart, if not the UK singles chart. It’s inexplicably absent, given it’s far and away the best ever UK entry, and among the best-ever Eurovision entries of all countries. Hey ho…

The chart is pretty active this week, Nottingham girl Indiana shoots up to 3 from 30 (coming from nearby Mansfield I have to support this fabulous Gossip-sounding track). Kiesza goes dance top 5, as does 60’s Duffy template Billie Davis, which sounds remarkably fresh, considering it’s 50-years old and I’d never heard it before this year. Mercy! Rocketing from 60 to 10 a lovely recent country song about country singers, from a young female duo First Aid Kit, happening in the Scandi-block with their new track (yet to chart here).

Kylie gets 3 Top 20 hits as I Was Gonna Cancel leaps to 11, and South African four rockstar sons of 70’s rockstar John Kongos borrow their dad’s tribal rhythms and smash America with the hit single at 19 holding, but leapfrogged by the only UK track of theirs available to buy in at 17 – happily it’s also great. Bloody UK record labels, so piss me off. There’s no wonder people download illegally when you can’t buy the tracks you want.

MIchael Jackson is back, assisted by Justin Timberlake, on a tinkered unreleased classic-period Jacko track, and it’s rather good, in at 20. Justin, who benefitted from Jacko’s idiot team turning down Pharrell Williams songs (they ended up forming the bulk of Justified, that very Michael Jackson album), also enters at 65 with his new solo single. In at 25, it’s Rex The Dog, fab dance track, a bit Moroder, a bit Communards, a bit Anthony & The Johnsons, a bit avante-garde, a bit catchy fun.

Anastacia makes the Top 40 for the first time in 9 years – has it been that long!?! – while Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott bring the Beautiful South (more or less) into the charts for the first time in 8 years. Yike!

Fingers crossed for that important song competition final this coming week. And Eurovision too.

27th April 2014

Columbian world pop star Shakira’s done it, back at the top after a gap of over 12 years: Whenever Wherever was the last time, bang smack when I started going to clubs a bit later than my teens and twenties. Better late than never! I was at a sunny and hot Gran Canaria club this week, which explains the current Spanish number 2 entering my chart at 56. Adrenalina sounded great and looked great on the video screen, all banging latino rhythms and J Lo and Ricky Martin do a lot of guest vocals on it, over 15 years since they both debuted in my charts. The Fatboy Slim world cup Brazilian sounds of Samba Da Mundo also go top 40. It’s all about latino music this week, hooray!

Kiesza gets into my top 10 a few weeks after I first saw the fab video, an exercise in how to do it right. An exercise in how to do it wrong is Katy Perry’s awful, terrible cake lyrics video for Birthday, in at 68 despite that. Had it been poetry, it would have been tolerable, but it’s largely lyrically twee and one wouldn’t really want to draw attention to them too much….!

Highest new entry, a little late, is Tove Lo. It suddenly grabbed me last week and rushes in at 16. Another oldie pops in at 31, Connie Francis hasn’t really made my charts much before, being as she dates back to 50’s and I wasn’t born, but this is the track I first came across in an episode of Futurama (Fry’s pet dog pining for him and eventually dying after years of waiting in vain, full of pathos) and it’s now used in a TV ad quite effectively, with a cat. Cats, dogs, aaahhhh!

20th April 2014

It’s Molly! That means the first UK Eurovision chart-topper since Love City Groove. I’m hoping she does better than they did in the competition! It’s a great song. Hot off the press that means Shakira is just pipped at the post for her 2nd number one, 12 years after the last (Whenever Wherever). Next week?

I compile my charts during the chart show and have done so for years and years and years, the cut-off point is 4 o’clock and any new entry has to be smoking’ hot by then. That’s bad news for Tove Lo who really clicked with me when Jameela played it half an hour ago, and would be high Top 40 otherwise. I have to give Most Improved DJ award to Jameela too, she’s improved no end since she first started presenting the rundown, helped in part by not talking as if listeners were 10 years old. We aren’t, for the most part.

Prince gets his first Top 5 in 20 years. Hooray! It was tragic how a consistent talent like his evaporated overnight right up his own symbol. Chrissie Hynde goes Top 20, and that’s a round 35 years of them for her. Seems like yesterday. Highest new entry is a 40-year-old track, courtsey of the 40th anniversary re-charting edition of Waterloo. Yes, 40 years on since they won, and I was an instant fan and still am. The album charting gives me an excuse to chart Dance, the best track not to be a single.

In at 34 is band KONGOS, currently taking America on, and 43 years after father South African John Kongos had 2 UK Top 5 hits, both brilliant (and one of which was later covered by The Happy Mondays, Step On, turning a drum-heavy menacing romp into a madchester whimsy, to lesser effect). I’m going to whinge again about not being able to buy singles on download in the UK. KONGOS is fab and I want it now, but have to wait until September. The record companies in the UK are evil monsters and need teaching a lesson. By the time they get round to trying to get an instant number one by holding back and creating pent-up demand on tracks the rest of the world can buy weeks, months and even years earlier, frankly, I’ve lost interest in buying them. We live in one huge internet world and they should be selling product immediately, everywhere. Hype is not needed, witness Pharrell available for months before it sold a million and hit number one and outsold all of the Johnny-Come-Latelys that knocked it off the top and plummeted down the charts. The current weekly new entry at the top cheapens it, and it’s the music industry’s fault. We need a strike on purchases till On-Air On-Sale is the norm. So there!

Phew! Back to music. Kylie gets 3 in the 40, and comebacks galore for the ladies, headed by Anastacia back after a very long gap. Ingrid Michaelson gets her 2nd chart hit with A Great Big World (their 2nd in the chart), her first hit (and Buzzjack non-winner) now climbing the US charts. Iggy Azalea has a proper hit, her first really, as she’s mainly just annoyed me so far, but this is a good ‘un.

13th April 2014

It’s an 80’s classic back at number one – George Michael got there in 1986, his second solo topper, and 4th in total at that point. It’s by far his most touching, minimal single, amazingly mature for a young pop star and just a plain fabulous song. Shakira’s back in the Top 10 with possibly her most interesting release to date, I love the grand scale of it. The Pierces get their second Top 10 of 2014, and have yet to fail to make my Top 10 with any single. Under-rated band. Prince grabs an actress (the likeable Zooey) and does his mid-80’s unisex-styled vocal circa Sign O The Times, to give him his best single in well over 20 years and a huge leap to 9. About time!

The late Frankie Knuckles belatedly goes Top 20, Billie Davis (60’s pop star) gets a new entry with a 60’s song I heard for the first time the other week – I think it’s fair to say Duffy’s Mercy owes quite a lot to it! Chrissie Hynde also makes a welcome return to the Top 30, 35 years of hits and counting. Gazza Barlow does better than Robbie’s 3rd single off the latest album at 28, U2 get a second Top 40 hit, Kylie gets a second Top 10 hit, and a bunch of oldies enter thanks to a lull in new releases (thanks to movies, TV and World Record Day releases making them eligible).

6th April 2014

3 weeks for Kylie at 1, while A Great Big World just can’t quite get there. Kylie’s title track meanwhile goes up to 12, I hope it’s a future single cos it’s fab. Kris Menace shoots up to 5, a rather catchy up tempo pop toon dontchaknow. Pixie Lott, up to 8, gets her biggest hit since 2009 number one Cry Me Out, and is clearly going down the same retro route as Paloma Faith, only in this case Nasty is essentially a KC & The Sunshine Band could-been circa 1975 – check out That’s The Way I Like It, Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty) or other tracks to get the references.

P’nau also get their biggest hit since those Elton John remixes, including Number One Sad, and go up to 7 with Faul & Wad Ad. Kaiser Chiefs also get their biggest hit in a while, 2008 being the last time they hit Top 10, and previously they had 3 number ones with I Predict A Riot, Oh My God and Everything Is Average Nowadays. Good to have them back on form!

Highest new entry is an ambitious, epic-sounding one might say, track from Shakira which brings a bit of variety to the dance-dominated UK singles chart. Phew! Who’da put money on that?! Shakira also had a previous number 1 (bit of a theme here) with Whenever Wherever in 2002. The late Frankie Knuckles brings Your Love into my charts for the first time, obviously the House influences being stronger than ever these days, the bulk of the backing track having charted as part of The Source and Candi Staton’s You Got The Love, which (you guessed it) was a number one in remixed form on 2 occasions, and my biggest single (in chart points) of the 90’s.

Pet Shop Boys also were huge influences on modern dance music, and they pop in with a forthcoming limited edition World Record Day track off the last album. I won’t list their previous chart-toppers or we’d be here all day. Other than that? Lots of new names from various Buzzjack song competitions – thanks guys!
