My 2014 Charts – July to Sept

28th September 2014

Sigma get their first number one, and Paloma Faith gets her 3rd, and 2nd of the year, 5 years after New York became her first. Rather shockingly, it also might well be the first drum n bass track to top my chart since 2002’s Kosheen had a 6-week run with Harder. Keeping up the fab female vocalist theme as Kate drops to 3, it’s a new entry at 2 for Cilla, thanks to the fab gear ITV drama, as Anyone Who Had A Heart reactivates in the UK charts, and pops back into my chart for the second time in 2 years – it grabbed a week on top in 2012, 48 years after it would have first topped my chart if I’d been compiling them then. I was 6, and I was mad on the record and Cilla. The record is still brilliant, much better than Dionne Warwick’s smooth original, and the TV show brilliantly captures the times – it’s not understating the case to say that Bobby’s home-life was pretty much what Liverpool was to me and my family in 1964-66 when we lived there and went to 2 schools. We were very poor, and that’s exactly how we lived and how Liverpudlians spoke and acted, it’s spot-on. It also brings Cilla her long-overdue kudos after becoming a mumsy TV host kind of took it all away in popular memory.

Elsewhere, G.R.L.’s great pop track hits 4, Taylor Swift gets a 2nd Top 10 hit, and Hozier gets into the top 20 again with Take Me To Church a year after first doing it. A couple of European biggies enter lower down (Alle Farben and Robin Schulz) courtesy of my week in Sitges, Spain, amongst others climbing as a result. I was very happy to hear Dirty Vegas’ popchartfreak topper from february also getting played, never thought I’d ever hear it anywhere. Hooray!

21st September 2014

It’s Kate Bush returning to number one with Hounds Of Love 28 years after dropping off the top slot. Partly it’s the Archive charting of it, but it’s also cos London readers Wyfes played it at Duckies Sitges as “our most favourite record in the world” as is traditional with one great oldie. I sang along like a madman in the opera-house venue and had a fab time dancing till 3am. Yes at my age, outrageous. Smiths, Bowie, Icona Pop, Gossip, Fifth Dimension, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, zillions of others and also the classic song shooting up to 24 which had everyone singing along, and Stealers Wheel going back up to 46.

Bad news for Sigma and Paloma who have to make do with 2, but Paloma’s already had a chart-topper this year, and 2 is pretty good! G.R.L. rocket from 73 to 8 with a great pop song, it’s got actual good lyrics and a great tune, while a bit of rock joins KONGOS in the top 10 as Tom Petty gets one of his rare Top 10 hits. Tom tends not to have big ones but he’s been charting now since 1977 with a long list of lesser hits. In the week that co-writer Bob Crewe died, Frankie Valli’s Can’t take My Eyes Off You hits 24, while The Real Tuesday Weld smooth tune charts twice, once with Claudia Brucken, who also has two on the climb. Fall Out Boy keep up the run of Top 40 hits, running Centuries, and U2 also have 2 from the new album pottering about lower down.

14th September 2014

It’s a 2nd week for classic 10CC on top, 3rd in total, and well deserved. KONGOS is fab too though just edging out Train this week which Ive yet to download and Kate Bush which I may well hear on my holiday in a week in an 80’s club that lurves Kate Bush.

Big climbs for Snakehips, very smooth, and The Script also go top 20 (not The Call as I mistyped for some reason) with Superheroes joining all the Guardians Of The Galaxy oldies! Appropriate. Talking of oldies, highest new entry is the late Bobby Womack’s 1972 minor US hit, which I only heard for the first time the other week, incredibly, as it’s featured in 2 movies (neither of which I’ve seen). It’s fab.

Meanwhile rock veterans return, U2 courtesy of a free album download, and the best track on it, and Billy Idol, back after a couple of decades away, and 35 years after his Generation X charting days. U2, in comparison have a mere 33 years of chart hits. Pah! Finally Claudia Brucken pops in with 2 new tracks, greedy girl, one with someone claiming to be the Real Tuesday Weld, I’m fairly sure that’s not true as she was a pin-up actress over 50 years ago…

7th September 2014

A little late this week, but not as late as I’m Not In Love, the first song in Guardians Of The Galaxy, and ending a 39-year wait for 10CC to get that second week at number one, their 3rd of 5 number ones, and a multi-tracked harmony classic. Godley and Creme featured on 4 of the number ones, but grabbed a further two for themselves in the 80’s. All 4 members were brilliant.

A very competitive chart this week, any of the top 10 could have been a contender to top, really, but biggest mover is KONGOS, sons of John Kongos now matching their dad in grabbing a top 5 hit a few months after it peaked at 19, but now on full release and the tribal rock charms bang on my car cd beautifully. Another number one pops in at 10 for Kate Bush, 1986 number one, and one of three (The Man With The Child In His Eyes, and Babooshka being lower). The only reason there isn’t a Kate invasion is a) I didn’t get tickets and b) the other UK charting tracks have already had extra chart runs in the last few years.

In at 17, Canadian rockers Marianas Trench do a great hatchet job on formula, mass-produced, record company cash-making, committee-designed dance pop. That’s not to say there aren’t great pop songwriters about (see Ryan Tedder at 2), but really, it’s all becoming a bit incestuous and back-scratching now. You know, artist can’t write a decent pop song, so hires rentasongwriter to spruce it up a bit while making sure they get songwriting royalties. Anyway, it’s a very funny track.

At 24, the late Robin Gibb’s poignant reworking of a 50-year-old very 1960’s Bee Gees song leaps up, and Taylor Swift pops into the Top 40 with one of her catchiest popsongs.

31st August 2014

It’s OneRepublic for a 2nd week on top, though 10CC’s summer love classic holds at 2 as Guardians Of The Galaxy charts all over Europe, and the soundtrack is in a lot of cinema lobbies. Train get yet another Top 3 hit, but have yet to top the chart – it’s looking good though as it’s not available yet and this is on radio plays alone.

Highest new entry is Lenny Kravitz at 10, a cracking new single that is also not yet available to buy in the UK, and his biggest hit for 15 years, and his 4th Top 10 in 24 years. Big climb for Sigma and Paloma Faith, and that will also one day be available to buy, along with Duke Dumont next week’s UK number one. Hozier is back a year on with the great Take Me To Church. It would be nice if it was a hit this time but I won’t hold my breath as you can’t dance to it and it doesn’t have Ed Sheeran on the credit.

enjoy:)

24th August 2014

A bit late this week, as I was bank holidaying it in Kent.

After 8 Top 10 attempts, Onerepublic finally get that elusive chart-topper, with the stomping thumping Love Runs Out, just keeping off 1975 Number One I’m Not In Love at 2 for 10CC. That song is from Guardians Of The Galaxy, of course, as a 7th track enters at 38 for Rupert Holmes, a Top 10 hit from 1979 for me, Escape (The Pina Colada Song) was a huge American hit while I was on my first adventure holiday in the States that year. The album of the soundtrack has done very well, and despite all the hoopla about Ed Sheeran having weeks at number one, it wasn’t the best selling album for the last few weeks: the latest Now album was, and at one point it was out-sold by Guardians Of The Galaxy, and several of the tracks were in the Archive Top 40 last week, amongst all those Streaming-dominated tracks older than 12 months which make up most of the chart. So there!

Francesco Yates is an 18-year-old Canadian with a gorgeous pop record, and leaps up to 4 with Call, just ahead of one mighty leap for David Guetta as he returns yet again to the top 5, up a whopping 57 places with Sam Martin. David has had 2 previous chart-toppers. Mamas Gun also leap into the Top 10, the London band’s fab retro Red Cassette up 17 places. Train get a 7th Top 20 hit, while Tom Petty is highest new entry at 25 with his 2nd Top 40 hit of the year, 37 years of hits and counting. The late Robin Gibb, meanwhile is in at 49 with one of his last recordings, giving him an amazing 45 years of chart entries solo, 46 years as a Bee Gee, including my first chart in 1968.

17th August 2014

It’s OneRepublic vs Guardians Of The Galaxy vs AXE advert.

It’s the advert! If you’ve been to the cinema there’s an epic advert showing a couple through the ages fated to meet in the modern world. It’s terrific, sells male deodorant and features a cover version of a brilliant Harry Nilsson record that is just as good as the original, One (Is The Loneliest Number). I presume the estate of Nilsson weren’t playing ball…

There are 5 tracks in the Top 30, and 3 in the top 5, from Guardians Of The Galaxy, the soundtrack was outselling all albums on itunes last week, bar the Now album, and that includes Sheeran, so hooray for good taste and a great compilation album that shows invention and love for less-obvious oldies. The only other place in my top 5 is for OneRepublic, stopping at 2, and frustratingly close to that elusive number one with a record that easily deserves to be on top, it’s stomping, stonking, tuneful and fab.

Sparks go up to 6, their equal 5th biggest hit, and 8 years late. better late than never! Goldroom and Say Lou Lou, join Headhunterz and Krewella inside the top 10, which seems to cover USA, Australia, Sweden and the Netherlands in one fell swoop. How very cosmopolitan! 10CC bide their time, up to 15, Erasure keep the run of top 20 entries at 28 years (Vince 33 years), Michael Jackson, very late, but still getting new Top 20 hits 45 years on.

Highest new entry is Duke Dumont, with a Black Box-a-like track that even has a vocalist sounding uncannily like Loleatta Holloway. Pity there’s no featuring credit. Rita Ora and Cheryl Cole finally go top 40, OK I give in! They’re in! Lower down Anastacia, Rizzle Kicks, will.i.am and Ali Campbell all return. Ali was the lead singer of UB40 who had an unbroken run of chart entries till he left the band really, starting in 1980. The band, now his brother on lead, returned earlier in the year, and now Ali (with a couple of UB40 mates) returns, giving him a 19-year-span as solo “hit”-maker, and 34 years as chart-er.

10th August 2014

It’s Redbone, from Guardians Of The Galaxy which I saw again, and enjoyed even more. As a result, Elvin Bishop’s gorgeous 1976 oldie is 4, 10CC’s 1975 number one I’m Not In Love is in at 31 and The Runaways (aka Joan Jett) are in at 55 with Cherry Bomb, first time to chart. Redbone have one previous Number One, Witch Queen Of New Orleans, which charted in 1971 and then topped my chart in 1977. Come And Get Your Love has had to wait 40 years to finally get there after charting in 1974, one of the longest waits in my charts.

My charts meanwhile go mad with big climbers and fallers, leading with the Harry Nilsson track One, used in advert as recorded by Order Of Era. Fab, One is the loneliest number… Onerepublic keep on with the top 5 hits, but have yet to go all the way, but 3 is pretty good! Marvin & Tammi finally get a Top 10 hit 45 years after their first, and 44 years since Tammi died tragically of a brain tumor and 31 years since Marvin was tragically shot dead by his father. Sparks, meanwhile, go top 10 yet again with a fairly recent oldie that I somehow missed, so Ive put that right! 40 years of top 10 hits, pretty much throughout the decades.

Other advert and film tracks: Hercules (X Ambassadors), ads: Lovin Spoonful, Goldroom,

3rd August 2014

It’s Midge for a second week on top, a synthpop return to form most welcome. Highest new entry at 3 though is native american band Redbone and the terrific 1974 hit and US smash hit (in my charts peaking at 27 or so) Come And Get Your Love. It’s their second Top 10 following the even-better smash-UK hit from 1971 Witch Queen Of New Orleans. Featured in the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” movie, I’m really getting into these great obscure 70’s and 80’s revivals in blockbuster movies – Blue Swede and Jim Croce have already charted from 1974 alone this year. Joining them, Elvin Bishop and Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s singles as featured in the same movie, Ain’t No Mountain having previously topped for Diana Ross, and been a minor 2010 reissued hit at 55 in my chart for the original Marvin & Tammi version. Elvin also charted back in 1976 or so.

Saint Motel is among the tracks still not available to download, as Nico and Vinz is finally out today after hitting it big in every single country in the world long ago. I like it but I’m not buying it in protest as the tosspot record companies holding back music from the UK and no other nation. They can piss off as far as I’m concerned. It’s a pity everyone else doesn’t follow suit as it’s guaranteed to be number one after years of being held back.

Jack White is the highest new track to chart, but lots of advert-related stuff, and chart hits lower down, while Erasure extend their run of hits and Dolly Parton does the same, since debuting in 1976 with Jolene.

It’s Midge Ure, getting his second solo number one 29 years after his last one. That’s got to be one of the biggest gaps between chart-toppers of all-time (with new material) – Pet Shop Boys started their run of 40 number ones just after If I Was in late 1985, by way of comparison.

John Miles gets his 3rd Top 3 (oldie) hit, and Example gets a top 10 hit again, his first since his Pet Shop Boys duet hit the top last year. In at 10, it’s back again for The Penelopes, after they went Top 40 in 2013, thanks to being runner-up in Unknown Pleasures song comp, while Charli XCX (kisses not a bad Roman Numeral) gets her first solo Top 20 hit. MKTO get their 2nd, and Tom Petty gets his umpteenth. Paul Carrack’s run of Top 40 hits extends to almost 40 years. How Long? Not ‘Arf!

Foster The People get another Top 40 hit, while in at 50, and from an advert, a cover of the great Harry Nilsson’s One Is The Loneliest Number. A Sparks (fairly recent) oldie also pops in thanks to another Buzzjacker, while a clutch of UK chart hits finally pop into the chart after bubbling under for ages. 20th July 2014

Back up to 1 for a 6th week for Miami Horror and CLEOPOLD, it’s such a toon. Which means it’s runner-up for Midge Ure, his second-biggest solo single after If I Was hit 1 in 1985. His other toppers were with Visage, Ultravox and Band Aid, and you should know which ones they are….if not, google Midge Ure!

Chassio goes Top 10, singalong pop for the summer, while a TV show on BBC for the Commonwealth Games lets the show-closer back into the Top 10 for the first time in 38 years, Music, at 7. If a song ever had lyrics that summed up my life, it’s that one. A bit of an epic, and it’s great to have John Miles back and sounding in great voice.

Usher gets his 4th Top 10 hit, with Good Kisser, one of his best records, and I’m not generally a fan, much less so his earlier stuff. Saint Motel isn’t out for some weeks (like numbers 4, 5, 6, 14 and many many more in my chart) but it leaps to 12 on radio play. Shatter Me cracks up to 26, Sunshine lights up at 30, while Train keep up the run of consecutive Top 40 hits with new song Angel In Blue Jeans at 37. That’s 8 or so hits over 14 years, not that many, but 7 of them were top 10’s, so they tend to be biggies.

13th July 2014

It’s a 43-year-old oldie at the top. Hang on that can’t be right….2014 minus 1971 equals errr agghhhh! Yes 43 years. It’s a record that nicked Neil Young’s sweet folk sound, by a band of American teens in the UK with their USAF fathers, so they happened in the UK first, and I recall seeing them on Top Of The Pops for the first time around New Year 1972. They went on to make some great records for over a decade, none of them big in the UK, but the USA took to them more. Anyway, thanks to an advert it re-charted in 2014, hooray, and it finally beats it’s original number 5 peak to top my charts.

The rest of the chart goes frantic, with massive clear-outs and chart jumps, Midge Ure gets his first Top 10 since 2001’s Under A Spielberg Sky, and his biggest hit since topping in 1985 (If I Was). SIA gets her first solo Top 5 hit since 2000 when Taken For Granted peaked at 4, though in the interim she’s had several with others including massive Number One (twice) with Titanium (David Guetta). Dance act RUFUS go top 10, and Naughty Boy is the highest new entry at 7, chasing his 2013 classic Number One La La La.

Lots of new dancepop new entries and climbers, some 2013 biggies are back (Family Of The Year, Thomas Azier) and MKTO get their second Top 40 hit, after the great Top 5 single Thank You. Fingers-crossed it gets reissued cos it deserves to be a UK hit. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, meanwhile, get their first (Beatles-sounding) chart entry for 20 years, and now stretch back to 1977 for 37 years of hits. eek! Talking of long chart runs, Paul Carrack’s back, he’s never far away from my charts or Radio 2 airplay, first gracing my charts in 1974 with How Long (as singer-writer for band Ace), so 40 years of hits, official!

6th July 2014

5 weeks on top for Miami Horror, and another BJSC entry goes top 5 – Sultan and Ned Shepard. I’m on holiday in Sitges, Spain till tomorrow (weekend break) and all of the wall-to-wall Kylie tracks in the bars here have had an effect – she’s dropped! Hey ho… Not that many current dance tracks on show in the clubs, which is a pity.

Highest new entry is Midge Ure in 80’s vogue, his biggest hit for some years, and stretches his run of hits to 38 years when he first charted as singer of boyband Slik (Forever And Ever) in 1976. He then had Rich Kids power-pop, New Romantic Visage (number 1 Fade To Grey) and Ultravox, Band Aid, and of course solo hits including number one If I Was. Good to have him back with a pretty current-sounding track, of sorts.

Others: SIA goes top 40 again, she’s had a surprisingly long span of hits too for someone who’s suddenly hot again (thanks to Titanium). Ditto Usher, back 19 years into his run of hits. Family Of The Year and Pharrell oldies from 2013 pop back again, both still popular on radio.
