My 1970 Charts – July

7th July 1970

5 weeks and Everything Is still Beautiful for Ray Stevens. Simon & Garfunkel go up to 4 with Cecilia up in my bedroom, Lady D’Arbanville gives Cat Stevens a royal climb to 6, and Lola gives The Kinks a manly leg-up into the top 10. New at 10, and The King is back, fresh from a run of classic 1969 singles, including chart-topper In The Ghetto, but this time it’s not cool soulful gospel Elvis, it’s the start of Las Vegas live cabaret Elvis who covers other people’s records for a living. This one is 1959 Ray Peterson hit The Wonder Of You, and is still his best cabaret period track, well OTT but a bit of fun, and Elvis had yet to become a caricature of himself.

In at 14, and back in the chart groove, Jimmy Ruffin keeps those Motown soul-sounds going with I’ll Say Forever My Love, a terrific record in a run of great singles from Jimmy. In at 19, Joni Mitchell finally charts in her own right, having been covered by others prior to Big Yellow Taxi. It’s a great song, still popular, but not by any means my favourite Joni song, not even close. 5 years on she took a re-recorded version into my charts, and it would be 4 years before she actually got a follow-up chart track enter my charts.

So, as they like to start sentences with these days, Singapore lazy hazy days of summer. My school popcorn transfer collection was becoming pretty comprehensive – I’d covered my cardboard hardboard suitcase-style school bag (everyone had them) in them, inside and out, and I’d decided to save them for posterity in a DIY mini-album made from A4 sheets cut in half and folded over, and stapled together. I still have it of course, and I am right now gazing at my gorgeous Neal Adams figures of Superman, Batman, Batgirl and Robin, still the best DC Comics artist of all time. I also had my el cheapo Far east rip-off versions of Batman/ Superman which had the hair the wrong colour, the costumes the wrong colour, and other hilarity I guess was intentionally done to avoid copyright prosecution. Either that or the artist was colour-blind. Then there’s my 2001: A Space Odyssey transfers, still sexy and still futuristic even though it’s 14-years beyond 2001 now. Not to mention my “Monkey” animation transfers (I’m sure I have already mentioned these, but y’know, whatever!) as Far East culture was just as much fair game as American to kids like me. Think of it as an early version of Kung Fu Panda! Then there’s the Cowboy transfers (think Toy Story’s Woody), the Daktari TV show transfers (Clarence The Cross-Eyed Lion was a hit long before The Lion King), and loads of Anime superheroes in the style of hit Japanese TV show Marine Boy. Anime was big news in Singapore for kids, and I have vague memories of an obscure series called Phantoma so I googled and I youtubed and he looks nothing like I recall (see link) so I’m thinking it may have been a local TV station rename for Space Ghost who does look like I recall (a Hanna Barbera cartoon) so here’s the Japanese language version. Anyways, all in all, a big yah-boo-sucks to later trends and cults for kids, beat ya all to it, so there hah (raspberry!).

Mungo Jerry finally get on top in the summertime, or in Singapore where it’s perpetually summer, summer sounds seemed doubly appropriate. Once upon a time it was fresh and new and unusual, before a plethora of adverts, TV spots, film slots and a cover by Shaggy rendered it all a bit old hat, but I retain affection for it as long as I don’t hear it too often! Highest new entry at 12 is Hotlegs with the insistent plodding beat of Neanderthal Man. It seemed like a novelty record, which is not quite right as the band went on to become 75% of 10CC, who also started off with what seemed to be a novelty record, before it became quite clear that they specialised in musical pastiches, witty lyrics and versatility of sound. Prior to Hotlegs, Eric Stewart was in and sang lead vocal on the Mindbenders gorgeous Groovy Kind Of Love, another of many childhood faves of mine. After leaving the chart, Graham Gouldman joined Lol Creme, Kevin Godley and Eric (joint owner of Strawberry Studios, where they recorded, along with Graham) and that was essentially 10CC formed.

Around about this time dad started buying colour slide films for the new half-frame camera – this was quite a revelation, as once he’d got a screen and slide projector we had the multicolour 60’s experience recorded for posterity at 72 shots a roll of film, and shown in glorious multicolour afterwards as big as you wanted. This was amazing, as it just captured everything about a largely-disappearing period-piece, our youth, and in the years (and decades) afterwards it kept the whole tropical Singapore world fresh and vivid. I still have boxes and boxes of slides (now sometimes looking worse for wear as time starts to let fungus and the like creep in) and no way of transferring to digital which does them justice – the focus is not quite right, the colours too pastel, the bits of dust and stuff on them stands out too much. What I need is time and expensive kit to have them back to life and saved. Here’s one of mum, dad, brother and life then ins Singapore city: mum’s crocheted handbag (arts and crafts were big with the housewives), the bottle of fanta (you needed lotsa bottles of fizzy drinks on a day out), the umbrella (when it rained it poured), the cool fashions: I’m sorry, for me fashion peaked in 1970 and it has been at it’s best since when it’s returning to similar styles of the late 60’s and very early 70’s. Call me old-fashioned…!

21st July 1970

Cliff gets his first chart-topper after a couple of number 2’s. I say first, actually Cliff’s career was the same age as me (still is, obviously!) and he’d moved over into family pop fairly early into his career and pretty much stayed there, but with an increasingly bubblegum tendency that didn’t go down well with music critics. Goodbye Sam Hello Samantha was melodic pop that appealed well enough to 12 year-old’s, about a boy dumping his mates for girls, not about tomboys blossoming into women, or boys going the Lola route (sadly, as that would have been quite a media sensation). In a hypothetical world where I started my pop charts at age 5, not 10, Cliff would have had Summer Holiday, Bacholer Boy, All My Love, The Day I Met Marie and maybe Congratulations hit the top spot, cos I loved them all. The Day I Met Marie eventually did top my chart, and there’s still time for The Next Time (double A with Bacholer Boy) to do the same, though the others have all passed that point now.

Simon & Garfunkel get yet another single fall just short of the top spot, the fab Cecilia at 2, as Elvis and Cat go top 5, Hotlegs go top 10, and the highest new entry at 13 is one I was mad on, recorded direct off the TV with a hand microphone from The Archies Fun House show. Love Vibrations inexpicably remains unreleased 45 years later, and of course is therefore the record I most want to be available on download, or CD, or vinyl. It’s just a great tune, and much better than a number of their rather odd singles choices following the monster that was Sugar Sugar. Pretty sure it never appeared in any chart, therefore, on the whole Planet Earth, so I’m singing it’s praises a lone voice in the wilderness, albeit through childhood rose-tinted specs. At 18, and much better-known, it’s Stevie Wonder again, Signed, Sealed, Delivered he’s yours. Even covered by Stevie himself in 2003 with Blue (it wasn’t an improvement on the original) it gave him a 21st century UK chart hit that wasn’t Superstition (it usually is). The youtube clip is a gem, cool Stevie and spot missus Syreeta on backing vocals. At 20, Pickettywich sneak in briefly again with a sad old movie, kinda. S’OK.

What was reading at this time, apart from comics? Just William books (very British), The Bobbsey Twins books (very American), Enid Blyton books (still) though I’d moved more into the “Secret” and “Adventure” books and away from The Famous Five and The Secret Seven (very Dorset). I’d already dipped into Arthur C. Clarke (Dolphin Island, a long-forgotten pro-dolphin sci-fi yarn aimed at kids) which whetted my appetite for science-fiction, without actually being aware that was what it was, or that more was available in that genre. My fave books of all-time, though were The Secret Island (Blyton) and Dolphin Island (Clarke) and the 1858 R. M. Ballantyne novel The Coral Island. Hmmm, I seem to have a thing for being marooned on/or living on isolated islands, particularly tropical ones, and ones with animals I can love (as opposed to eat). It all seemed so glamorous being able to do exactly what you want, in co-operation, on a marvellous adventure. Or maybe I just liked living in my own world cos the real one is quite cruel. No change there then….

28th July 1970

2 weeks for Cliff and Samantha, Cat hits 3 with his lady, and Jimmy Ruffin gets a 2nd top 10 in a row. In at 12 it’s another country-flavoured melodic ballad from the under-rated Scottish band Marmalade, Rainbow is another sweet-sad pop song in the style of The Hollies or Crosby Stills & Nash, and follows-up my chart-topper Reflections Of My Life. Like The Monkees they generally (against their wishes) were forced to record songs by professional songwriters, (good records all the same) but in 1969 switched to Decca and produced their own songs. Their line-up had Junior Campbell, later of solo gospel-tinged singles success, and they rather sensibly changed the band name from The Gaylords. Pity they didn’t choose The Jam rather than The Marmalade though! Hendrix was an early supporter, little-known fact.

At 14, it’s an oldie, and a classic. Yes, shockingly, Tears Of A Clown was an obscure 1967 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles album track which Motown bizarrely failed to recognise as a smash hit classic. The UK was a big supporter of 60’s Motown tracks well into the 70’s, and this one actually topped the UK singles chart before happening in the USA – it also stopped Smokey leaving the band for another 2 years! The record? It’s perfect. The circus-themed riffs, the clever lyrics, the great vocal, and the tune, all perfect. No cover version, including the hit ska cover by The Beat, comes close to matching the sheer beauty of the original. Smokey is a much-admired songwriter by other professional songwriters, and he even had a song all about him: ABC’s When Smokey Sings. Nuff said. In at 19, Chicago are back with 25 Or 6 To 4 – no I still have no idea what it means either. It’s a great jazz-tinged rock groove though, with some mighty riffs. The future held decades of tedious ballads (mostly) but in 1970 they were still cool.

The youtube clip of Tears Of A Clown is taken from The Andy Williams Show, Andy was coolest of the crooners and a family fave, his variety show had his extended family on it (actual wife Claudine Longet, and unrelated regulars The Osmond Brothers) and big big Hollywood and TV superstars, and big singers and up and coming upstarts like Elton John and The Jackson 5. The Cookie Bear was a running gag beloved of kids like me, and in this clip you have Ray Stevens doing his novelty hit Along Came Jones with Andy doing the female role, comic Danny Thomas joining in, and 7-year-old Jimmy Osmond as cowboy hero Jones. Cute!

My Charts Jan-Apr 2016

P1070636

23rd April 2016

It’s a Prince invasion following the shocking news of his sudden death, one of the giants of music – he may never have had the universal appeal of his contemporaries Madonna and Michael Jackson but he was a significant influence and prolific writer/musician/producer/live sensation/one-man business. I was a fan. In at 1 it’s therefore his greatest single, When Doves Cry, no bassline and brilliant, peaking at 2 originally in 1984 in my chart it at last goes one better. This isn’t the reason to re-chart it I’d hoped for though.

That leaves Pet Shop Boys stalled at 2 as more Prince records enter the top 10, including at 4 a record that is a Prince record in all but name – he wrote it, produced it and gave it away to Sheena Easton where it has languished in obscurity ever since. The brilliant 101 topped my chart in 1989, I Wish U Heaven topped my chart in 1988, back now at 5, and Sign O’ The Times peaked at 2 in 1987, back at 6. All are brilliant, and I’ve added video links to youtube which probably wont be there long – Prince on Youtube is a no-no so younger folk may not even have seen these videos. In the case of I Wish U Heaven I doubt anyone’s heard it’s Second Summer Of Love brilliant vibe before as the single isn’t on compilations and is only available as part of the album Lovesexy – Prince infuriated me when he released the album as a continuous track, there were no track dividers, and when I wanted to play the track I had to fast forward the whole bloody album. It’s still like that. Just one of the many fan-piss-off decisions he made!

http://youtube.com/v/j60p78OvxQY

Highest non-Prince entry is Adore Delano and Take Me There at 17, before we head back to more Prince tracks. In at 20, Starfish And Coffee, one of his best album tracks, one that should have been a single off the fab Sign O’ The Times album, a period when Prince was on fire. In at 26, Raspberry Beret, one I under-rated at the time (1985), at 30 Alphabet Street (number 1 in 1988), and Sheena’s back with Prince at 38 on U Got The Look (top 10 in 1987). Outside the 40: I Would Die 4 U, Kiss, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Let’s Go Crazy, Little Red Corvette, Take Me With U, Purple Rain, and I Wanna Be Your Lover. Phew! Good thing I expanded my chart to 100 this year, no sign of it returning to 75 anytime soon.

17th August 2016

It’s a shocking 4 new entries in the top 4 of my chart! I’m not sure that has ever happened before, but it’s a unique clear-out post-holiday – I played recent faves quite a lot so they were less fresh, and got back from Gran Canaria on Record Store Day which means a bunch of classic oldies released – top of the list: Wichita Lineman, the Jimmy Webb classic song as definitively sung by Glen Campbell. It went top 5 for me in 1969, it was on the first album I had bought for me by my parents in 1970 (and would have charted again if I’d thought of it), it was a reissued oldies chart 1977 topper for me and now it’s out again on vinyl almost 40 years later to mark Glen’s 80th birthday. It’s also regularly named as one of the greatest records of all-time. Because it is!

In at 2, the best track on Super, the Pet Shop Boys new album, Say It To Me, helping to knock their 2 other top 10’s down a bit, while in at 38 another track, Undertow, is dragged in. At 3, it’s a 1990 chart-topper for me, the Trevor Horn-produced flop by Inga Humpe, Riding Into Blue (Cowboy Song), which I’ve stuck into the Buzzjack Song Contest just because it’s sweet and I still love those layered synthy melodic harmonies and the cowboy yeehah’s! Finally, at 4, it’s Native American band Redbone back, originally charting in 1974 it topped my chart 2 years ago as featured in Guardians Of The Galaxy – Come And Get Your Love is now backdrop to a show-stopping SKY advert featuring Quicksilver, soon to feature again in the next X-Men film having stolen the previous movie via the Time In A Bottle sequence.

All of Bryan Ferry’s early solo singles are out for Record Store Day, first to chart is his 1974 top 10 cover of The ‘In’ Crowd. Ferry was just awesome back in the early 70’s, both with Roxy Music, and with his solo projects reinventing fave old songs in new exciting sax-heavy ways. This one under-performed in my very hectic Top 30 in 1974, so it’s overdue a proper chart run. Big climbers: AlunaGeorge and Popcaan, into the top 30, while Zayn, sorry ZAYN, finally hits my 40. Buzzjack song Ulay Oh is lovely and in at 32, which leaves new entries for Kungs, Roxette back and charting after 28 years and ongoing, P!NK back and 18 years on, Elle King, Fifth Harmony (at last), with Above And Beyond and Sigala also returning with new tracks. Finally, Amanacer features twice – that’s “dawn” in Spanish, the fab Bomba Estereo song at 20 being not the same as the OTT Spanish Eurovision entry from 2015 from Edurne which is back cos I watched the video on my hols!

Its Juice Newton getting that Deadpool chart topper after a 35 year wait. Yes I do feel better, yes I do I feel alright, cos i’m on holiday in gran canaria and McAlmont & Butler are almost back on top 21 years later. I call it epic and one of the greatest records of the 90s. Laura Mvula gets a 2nd top 10 and aha their umpteenth, 31 years of ’em, but Nile Rodgers can best that – 38 years worth. DMX also gets an oldie Deadpool and Melissa McCarthy lipsync battle boost. Both hilarious. Im long bored with pop stars selling music by putting swear words in it then doing clean versions to make it pointless in the first place. If ya gonna do it though do it DMX style and make it the whole angry point!

Tame Impala get a 4th top 20, Adam Lambert and Thomas Rhett a 2nd top 40, and hang on shorely shome mishtake! Rick Astley back in the top 40 after a gap of 28 years?! With a great new record?! Thats why I love the pop biz, never write anyone off. Rick always had a great voice, it was his material that did him in. Before anyone knew he was white Black US radio stations played Never Gonna Give You Up he just never looked like he sounded!

Lower down Birdy has another good newie and ZAYN finally makes my chart follwing the melissa lipsync battle which made me like it quite a bit. Santana are back over 12 years on, and Natalie Merchant 25 years on with a 2001ish oldie i heard for the first time.

3rd April 2016

It’s Squeeze finally getting that elusive chart-topper, the tuneful, retro, and classy Nirvana, almost samba stylee and with a hint of Band Of Gold’s twangy guitar and strings. Fab. They’ve only had to wait 38 years to top my charts, I’m sure they feel it was worth the wait! That leaves yet another Bowie classic leaping into the top 5, The Jean Genie had a good chart run first time round in 1972, but never quite made it into my top 10 as I saw it as a bit lesser than John I’m Only Dancing, his previous single. That mighty riff has grown with the years though, and so peaks so far at 2, same as the UK singles chart.

Pet Shop Boys get 2 simultaneous tracks off the now-released Super, as B side to The Pop Kids, One-Hit Wonder, enters the 40. McAlmont & Butler return to the top 10, Yes they do, 21 years on, and Yes it’s still Fab. Tame Impala have a leap into my top 30 for the 5th time, and Chairlift finally grab a top 40 spot after climbing slowly for weeks. Gwen Stefani makes it 2 in the 40 as delightfully retro-ska album track, Where Would I Be?, is my highlight off her latest. Midge Ure adds to his total of top 40’s, a cool 40 years since he debuted as lead singer of Slik, all teen-pop and monk chanting.

A lack of new entries allows me to chop the chart down to 90 at long-last, hoping to drop some more down to 75 in the next week or two, but newies are left to Culture Club’s classic Victims, back 33 years on from topping my chart; All Saints album track One Woman Man, The Chainsmokers and Rozes, AlunaGeorge popping back with Popcaan. He probably goes down well at the cinema. Lastly, Raleigh Ritchie replaces himself in my chart as he does a terrific Graham Norton performance. About time he broke big, I say.

27th March 2016

It’s a 3rd week for Vaults holding off the all-time bridesmaids Squeeze – who have been stuck at 2 in 1978, 1995 and now 2016. The always-good Chris and Glen almost hit the top every other decade it seems. Fingers crossed they don’t get leapfrogged by another duo Chris and Neil who Squeeze have jumped over, but who enter at 7 with their 3rd top 10 of the year – Pet Shop Boys new track one off the new album Super is a fab marmite dance-yeehaw-country slab of fun guaranteed to annoy a lot of people. Hooray Happiness! Primal Scream and Gwen Stefani both add to their tally of top 10 entries with quality singles.

OMD just miss out on adding to their tally at 11, though oddly this one is sung not by another golden duo (Paul and Andy) but by actor Taron Egerton (assisted by Hugh Jackman) who does a great job from movie Fly. Talking of movies, 3 classic oldies enter my charts for the first time thanks to spooky drama 10 Cloverfield Lane – Frankie Avalon’s teen-classic Venus gives him a chart entry for the first time in 38 years, since Grease’s Beauty School Dropout , while Tommy James has his first since Mony Mony was reissued in 1975, though the song I Think We’re Alone Now was big for Tiffany in 1987.

Also back after 21 years, McAlmont & Butler’s classic Yes, which I saw high on itunes yesterday – I’m guessing it was on The Voice (haven’t seen it yet) – and which topped my chart in 1995. A big climb for Florrie into the 40, and new tracks by Gwen Stefani, Pet Shop Boys, Nick Jonas and Tove Lo (her second in the chart, and Nick joining brother Joe in DNCE), and Zara Larsson as I at long last give in and chart Lush Life.

20th March 2016

It’s Vaults for a 2nd week ahead of a resurgent Pet Shop Boys and a very 80’s chart. Not only are there actual 80’s tracks, there are many a regular 70‘s/80’s veteran in the chart doing well – just count all the acts who were around then but with new material! – but thanks to the soundtrack to Fly (the Eddie The Eagle movie) Gary Barlow has worked with a whole album-worth of 80’s acts on new material for the film. That leads most noticeably to the first chart return in over 20 years for Go West (who I saw in concert last year), Midge Ure, OMD (both have topped my chart in recent years), and in at 24 with their first chart entry with new material in a whopping 30 years, Heaven 17. That’s the length of time contemporaries Pet Shop Boys have been having number ones in my charts!

That’s not all, though, Squeeze are back and new at 5 with the highest new entry, a sort of fab mellow almost-bossa-nova nirvana. That’s their first top 10 in over 20 years, and 38 years since their first. All Saints get a first top in 10 years, Bo Saris leaps to 10 from 67 thanks to a car advert, and Primal Scream grab another top 20 26 years on from their first. The veterans are back on form collectively for sure, as ELO and Bryan Adams (also Jeff Lynne) pop in, Gwen Stefani gets another top 10 almost 2 decades on, a-ha leap into the 30 30 years on, and Nile Rodgers just keeps adding to his long list of featuring’s with Laura Mvula grabbing a second top 40. James also replace themselves in the chart, just to rub it in. Oh, and Westlife’s Markus Feehily gets a second big top 40 entry as he decides passion is better than stools on stage.

13th March 2016

It’s Vaults with their first chart-topper, and the best new song from a movie in 2015 (though I’ve yet to see 50 Shades Of Grey), the fab One Last Night. It’s another movie theme at 2, the brilliant intro sequence to Deadpool, Juice Newton’s 1981 cover of Angel Of The Morning finally getting the kudos it missed at the time (from me). Mike Posner pops Ibiza into the 10, biggest climber is All Saints up a whopping 43 places to give them a first top 20 entry since 2006, a whole decade away!

In the week Beatles Producer the great George Martin passed away, The Beatles get a 4th entry with the appropriate In My Life (it was bubbling inside the itunes top 200) while the other 3 go up. Philip George & Dragonette go top 40, Gwen Stefani gets a second quick top 40, and Great Good Fine OK also get a second top 40 entry after a bit of a gap. Highest new entry is an advert song from Bo Saris, very Plan B/Prince, while Dusty’s classic UK chart-topper at long long last makes my charts for the first time as her hits CD enters the charts. Only 50 years overdue (It would have charted in 1966 pretty highly if I’d been compiling charts then)! Other returns: Haelos (former chart-toppers), Laura Mvula & Nile Rodgers, Thomas Rhett, Jess Glynne. Don’t play the naughty record at 96. OK do, it’s very funny, OTT and catchy.

6th March 2016It’s a 41st Number one for Pet Shop Boys, sounding very late 90’s-period PSB’s, smooth EDM. Neil and Chris have never had more than a 2 or 3 year gap between chart-toppers since first doing it over 30 years ago with West End Girls. The previous topper was with Example, it was on a Thursday. Vaults get runners-up with the gorgeous One Last Night, and FKA Twigs grabs her first top 5 with the lovely Good To Love. Highest new entry at 6 is a track to be played at a funeral this week, a track from 2000 that I knew, and loved, but was somehow unable to find out who or what it was. It’s a chill-out classic, you will likely know it, but you may not know that you know it. The orchestral hook is taken from a 1968 Engelbert Humperdinck record and re-worked by Kinobe. So 16 years late it finally charts.

Talking of charting at new peaks belatedly, thanks to Deadpool (which I saw again, fab film) Juice Newton’s 1981 minor version (in my charts) of Angel In The Morning enters at 15. It kicks off the movie beautifully, and is a power-country-ballad version of a song that first charted for Mary Mason in 1977 for me. So, 35 years late, it hits a new peak. As does another track from Deadpool, X Gon Give It To Ya, which DMX took to a measly 68 in 2003, but which finally hits the top 40 13 years late. DJ Fresh and Dizzee grab another top 10, as do Mott & Bowie’s Dudes back in the top 10 after a 44-year absence.

Sammy Davis Jnr gets his first-ever top 10 hit, 44 years after he was denied The Candy Man doing it (in 1972 I only allowed UK charting singles in my chart, but his USA chart-topper was a fave). Justice at last! Biggest climber is pill popping Mike Posner, the late Viola Beach make my top 30, and Elvis gets If I Can Dream into the chart for a 4th time (albeit a new version), 1969 it went top 5, and most recently in 2007 it also went top 5. New entries outside the 40: All saints are back with One Strike, hooray! Nearly 20 years since they started a run of a dozen hits or so. a-ha are also back lengthening their run to over 30 years, and Kate Bush is back again with This Woman’s Work (thanks to The Voice) which will help it rise inside my top 800 listing (given it away!).

28th February 2016

It’s a 4th week for Faded, that’s the whole of February on top, but there are 4 top 5 climbers hot on it’s heels. Pet Shop Boys first official single from Super replaces Inner Sanctum in the top 10, up 31 places to 2. Not many PSB singles peak at 2, so next week should see if they can keep up the chart-toppers. David Bowie gets yet another classic in the top 3 as Oh You Pretty Things replaces Changes in the top 3, appropriately all very Hunky Dory. Bomba Estereo groove to 4, up 20 places, and Vaults vaults 10 to 5 with the movie soundtrack song, her first top 10. Not seen the film yet.

Up 81 places, probably the biggest jump ever in my charts (being as I rarely have a top 100!) it’s the very late Sammy Davis Jr with the help of a fab Sky advert landing at 15, his highest ever chart placing and 4 years since Rhythm Of Life charted. There are, depressingly, a plethora of late music stars in my charts. Of the new ones, FKA Twigs gets her first top 20 with a lovely toon, and King (not the 80’s pop stars) go top 30 with the lovely The Greatest. Josef Salvat gets his first top 30, and Primal Scream and Holly Johnson return to the top 40 with new tracks, Holly’s is his biggest since the 80’s!

Others: I’ve been to see the fab Deadpool, which has a great soundtrack of oldies, 4 of them enter (Chordettes Back To The Future classic Mister Sandman; DMX; Neil Sedaka; Ray Charles), while there’s a song contest invasion of new stuff, and a few non-BJSC new tracks, including a welcome return to 6-years-absent Corinne Bailey Rae, who last hit my top 10 in 2010.

21st February 2016

It’s Faded for a 3rd week on top as Changes hits number 2, a new peak since it first charted in 1975 for David Bowie, and the same for Oh! You Pretty Things, which has never charted before, both dating from 1971 originally, when I lived in Singapore and had no idea who Bowie was…! Highest new entry is a second hit for Vaults, at 15, from a naughty movie, it’s fab, while a hot new track enters at 20 for Flume featuring Kai. A Spanish language dance goodie from Colombian band Bomba Estereo is in at 24, quite probably only the 2nd act from that country to make my charts (Shakira obviously the likely first), and in at 33 it’s the new official single from Pet Shop Boys joining the next album debut track Inner Sanctum inside the top 40. Of course! I was, in actual fact, a Pop Kid. I like to think Neil wrote the lyric for me… tongue.gif

Others: the tragically late young band Viola Beach enter with a good track, Holly ‘Frankie Goes To Hollywood’ Johnson is back over 30 years on with a movie soundtrack song not entirely unlike The Power Of Love. That’s a good thing. FKA Twigs gets a second entry, Gwen Stefani keeps the 20 year-run (nearly) of hits going, albeit starting with No Doubt, no doubt. Elvis is back with a re-imagining of his 1969 top 5 belter If I Can Dream, one I loved as an 11-year-old but less so these days, and finally Sammy Davis Jr is being used in a SKY TV ad, good enough excuse for me to chart it (along with itunes) especially as it’s a song I knew in my distant youth but never really noticed much. Sammy was fab.

14th February 2016

2 weeks on top for the gorgeous Faded, not fading at all, along with the top 4. Pet Shop Boys finally get into the Inner Sanctum of the top 10, I think only 2 PSB singles have ever failed to do that, though some album tracks pottered around lower as well. Aphrodite’s Child and several Bowie’s keep the oldies climbing, while the highest new entry is a buzz: Timothy Bloom and V Bozeman, a great soul duet (or r’n’b if you prefer) that hasn’t even been released in the UK streaming or itunes, and there’s an over-18 adult video to go along with it – or Arty, as I prefer to think of it, it’s lovely if you don’t have hang-ups about the beautiful human body. The edited version though is linked…

In at 29, it’s cult and 60’s sounding Cat’s Eyes with the super-hero named Chameleon Queen, it’s part opera singer Rachel Zeffira, and part The Horror’s Farid Badwan, and part fab. In at 30 DJ Fresh and Dizzee Rascal do what the rubbish streaming charts wouldn’t allow let them do – get a bonafide top 40 entry. On UK sales they are top 20, but as it’s Ministry Of Sound (as in not streamed) it’s barely inside the top 75 combined chart. I bet Ministry Of Sound made more money from their sales-alone chart position last week than half the records placed higher thanks to streaming.

Lower down and welcomes back to Primal Scream and James, both veterans of the early 90’s, and both former chart-toppers here and nowhere else in the real-singles-sales-chart world, criminally. Enya’s even more veteran, late 80’s and still going strong with a second chart entry in 2016, while most-veteran of all is Rick Wakeman, once of Yes, prog rock king, album chart-topper, funny, intelligent, and loveable man, and player of many a session, including David Bowie’s Life On Mars – which he did for the BBC as an instrumental following Bowie’s death, and now released. So he’s actually in the chart twice with the same song, yay for Rick. Most incredibly of all, I think is this his first ever entry in my singles charts solo. Now that really is 45 years overdue!!!

7th February 2016

It’s the oh-so-earworm fragile vocals of Iselin Solheim on Alan Walker’s Faded that just pips the sultry vocals of Bishop on Zonderling’s Crazy For You. Steve Aoki gets his first top 3, and Walk Off The Earth get their second, as Florence gets a 23rd consecutive top 4 run. Turin Brakes equal their previous biggest, 2003’s Pain Killer at 5. Lukas Graham go top 10, the lovely 7 Years, and David Bowie joins himself in the top 10 with Oh You Pretty Things, a song I knew long long ago in a hit version by Peter Noone, lead singer of Herman’s Hermits, Bowie’s superior original at long last charts big, as does his original version of All The Young Dudes, gifted to Mott The Hoople to classic effect. Bowie’s stripped-back version isn’t a patch on his production for Mott – happily they’ve released the Mott Backing track with Bowie’s vocals, and Ian Hunter’s backing singing, which tributes Mott’s late drummer as well as Bowie.

Talking of late, another week, another loss, this time Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire who get 2 of their best tracks back in my chart, while back in the land of the land, more scandipop (sort of) as Postiljonen get a 3rd top 20 with The Open Road. Pet Shop Boys keep the top 20 run secure, as Raleigh Ritchie climbs into the 30, the top 40 chart still Bowie-full, as some dropping down and out are replaced by two Blackstar tracks. Up to 47, Demis Roussos and Vangelis aka Aphrodite’s Child late 60’s gentle pyschedelic Greek prog rock. If you can’t imagine a slim, good-looking, hip and cool Demis Roussos take a look!

31st January 2016

It’s Zonderling at 1, with BISHOP, that’s a male Deep House duo and female DJ/Singer, who seem to have collided with major impact for me on the fab Crazy For You, just holding off the Must-be-huge-in-the-UK-sometime-soon Faded, from Alan Walker, a big Euro-hit. Florence holds at 3, that’s an unprecedented 21 consecutive top 3 weeks and one week at 4. The epic drama of the track just does not fade for me!

Chris Lee gives China a top 10 act crossed over with UK PCMusic, while The Shanghai Restoration project are a bit lower down, giving a modern Chinese-American version of a 1930’s Chinese movie tune (I think!). TheFatRat have a real mish-mash of musical styles that works at 10, and highest new entry is Nimmo at 20, a London 5-piece band with a thumping good dance groove.

Pet Shop Boys keep up the top 40 consecutive record – they have never missed once since debuting in 1985 – with Inner Sanctum, while all of David Bowie’s new tracks (except Lazarus) climb, including the 10-minute long experimental Blackstar, along with new entries for Bowie singing on his production of his song for Mott The Hoople, along with lead singer Ian Hunter: All The Young Dudes, a much better version than his own version. Queen Bitch also enters to swap places with China Girl and Ashes To Ashes which drop out, love ‘em, but they have had great chart runs already.

The late Colin Vearncombe returns with his classic Wonderful Life, as Black, while the late Glenn Frey goes top 40 for the second time with his Miami Vice hit, and the late Demis Roussos gets a belated tribute first entry for 60’s goodie Rain And Tears, with Aphrodite’s Child.

24th January 2016

It’s another David Bowie oldie on top, one I like to think he wrote for me (I’m John, and he’s only dancing, so that’s fine). This is the 3rd time it’s made my top 5, in 1972, in 1980 (in an alternate 1972 version) and now again. There was also that other double A side version (Again) which is the worst of all the various versions – it’s like Bowie was never quite satisfied with it, leaving off his big albums, I think bizarrely so. It’s pretty obscure as a result of that decision, but it’s much better than many of the tracks that made it on to Ziggy and Aladdin. Play loud and it all makes sense. His 12th chart-topper, and only a 44-year wait from entering my chart to do it – a new chart record.

It’s a manic chart, stuffed with fabulous hot new singles, and still Hurts and Florence won’t shift, cos I love them so, still. Florence is now 2nd biggest record of the 21st century and Hurts are in the top 10. In at 4, it’s an unusual banging dance track, the producers seem to have purposely shifted it slightly off the beat, which is totally bizarre-sounding but soooo obsessive for me. Zonderling and Bishop are new to me, and this track is FAB. Alan Walker and Turin Brakes both go top 10, and the theme tune to David Bowie’s 80’s movie, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is back for Ryuchi Sakamoto, it’s still lovely and haunting, in at 17. Ryuchi first made my chart in 1980 with Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Invaders Theme, which I’ve been playing a lot lately too.

Talking of Bowie, some drop out, some enter, some go up, such as Tis A Pity She Was A Whore, experimental industrial rock, almost, and into the 40 along with the gorgeous The Prettiest Star. New tracks, the marathon title track to Blackstar is into the 75, all jazzy, an Aladdin Sane album track, Panic In Detroit, and also a live performance of Pink Floyd’s Arnold Layne with David Gilmour, which I never charted – I must have been on holiday out of the country and missed it when it went UK top 20. David’s Pet Shop Boys Hallo Spaceboy (final part of the Major Tom referenced trilogy) stays static, but Pet Shop Boys have released a new track from a forthcoming new album and it sits amongst a bunch of Bowie tracks, I think appropriately. Inner Sanctum is pure dance, pretty much, and enters unusually low for a PSB track, for me.

There are loads of tracks re-entering, or entering again as new (it’s a new year, so a new entry if they exited the chart in 2015 in my version of chart worlds) thanks to the hideously slow UK singles chart finally getting behind tracks that were in my charts last year – though some it must be said did chart in the UK Sales chart as opposed to combined streaming chart – or else Radio 1 and 2 have suddenly got behind them. So X Ambassadors, Tame Impala, Elle King, 99 Souls, Thomas Rhett are on the up again. Finally, Glenn Frey died this week, and I’ve had to chuck out Lemmy and Natalie Cole tracks to make way for solo Glenn and Eagles tracks, but I stuck with ones that were 100% Glenn that underperformed in my charts.

17th January 2016

Yes it’s Heroes (or “Heroes”) on top for the first time, after a 39 year wait. Bowie is a legend, and Heroes was underestimated by everyone, including me, when it came out in 1977. Donna Summer had just blown everyone away with I Feel Love, Oxygene and Magic Fly were in the charts sounding like the future, and punk rock was all the rage, Bowie himslef had already done the synth pop thing earlier in the year with Sound And Vision, and Heroes just seemed very low-key. It made my top 20, and then eventually top 5 in 2012, and now becomes David Bowie’s 11th chart topper. 25 Bowie tracks old and new enter my expanded chart (I had to do it again, it would have been unfair to chop the bottom 25 out), while his final single while alive Lazarus shoots up to 8.

Highest of the actual new entries is Steve Aoki, and Walk Off The Earth, their second top 10 single, while Turin Brakes radio mix gives them a very 2016 sound and a welcome top 20 return after 11 years away and 15 years after debuting. I’m gratified to see a lot of tracks in the UK charts at last, months after charting in mine (or mere weeks in some cases) and two of them duly climb back up (X Ambassadors and Shawn Mendes), but this chart is all about David Bowie, Music Legend and a real Hero of mine.

10th January 2016

It’s Hurts for a 5th week on top, as Florence stays at 2, 19 weeks none of them lower than 4, and now well inside my all-time top 75 chart pointers! The Cowsills harmony overdrive 1969 goodie is at 3, as The Turtles 1967 classic pop track is at 5, one of 2 from Minions. Here’s the video:

http://youtube.com/v/Tvu3xiFmfDU

Nero and Charli XCX both return to the top 10, Nero with a dancefloor bound, and a fabulous female vocal. Motorhead make the top 20 for the 3rd time, as the late Lemmy peaks in the UK charts having hit my top 3 long ago. In the basence of fresh new music, lots of oldies re-enter, or debut, or climb, including two Beatles album track classics thanks to the streaming album chart entries – just limited it to those that made the Top 100 though to avoid a Beatles invasion yet again! Neither John Lennon’s Across The Universe nor his A Day In The Life have charted before: unbelievable!!

Chinese singer Chris Lee has gone all techno techno techno, and she has a new image to match her arty pop, part of a double A side single, this is the track I prefer in at 20, Real Love (and not John Lennon’s Real Love). The other will enter next week, love the traditional Chinese music influences in it.

3rd January 2016

It can’t still be same 3 records on top can it ? Oh yes it can, all stay as they were, a 4th week for Hurts on top and a million seller, as Florence is now inside the all-time top 80 and Coldplay leap 3 of their own inside the all-time 400. Coldplay, Florence and Hurts just can’t stop being greedy as they are also 4, 7, and 20 respectively with newer tracks, while Adele is 6 and 17. As the chart is cut back down to a Top 75 at last there is a mass exodus of 2015 tracks and christmas songs, and still there are 18 new entries, headed by Anastacia and her Army Of Me at 27. The sad deaths of Lemmy and Natalie Cole, give some comeback chart hits for Motorhead, Natalie, and Hawkwind, while other oldies from childhood fave Billy Fury and recent musical theme tune wot I saw, Beautiful, the Carole King story.

The Turtles get their first top 10 since 1968 with Minions track Happy Together – that seems a record to last! – as Kim Wilde gets her latest actual new top 10 stretching hers to 35 years. Lower down, new for Nero, Olly, Andy Grammer, Taylor, Foxes and The Weeknd, all having been there before on more than one occasion. Coldplay meanwhile enter with Tove Lo for a bit of Fun, as they also climb to 45.
