My Retro February 1970 Charts

Transfers I used to buy in packets of popcorn from the school tuck shop at RAF Seletar Secondary Modern in Singapore around this time. My school bag was covered in them. The right-hand side was from the TV animated version of Monkey which has been remade endlessly ever since in all sorts of versions.

7th February 1970

It’s a second week on top for Bridge Over Troubled Water as all other album tracks climb, notably Cecilia into the top 10, giving Simon & Garfunkel 3 at once. Brotherhood Of man get a first top 10, John Lennon a 2nd solo top 5. In a quiet week for newies, Junior Walker gets the highest, with other Motown acts popping in with B sides lower down. In my charts of what I liked and knew back in the day, there’s an expansion to 20 as I start to hear a lot more stuff in Singapore than I did previously – probably due to the new stereo record player mum and dad bought, which had a radio. Our first ever stereo system. Music never sounded so good!

14th February 1970

It’s 3 weeks on top for Bridge Over Troubled Water as the total of tracks off the album in the top increases to 4, and Robin Gibb gets his 2nd solo top 10. The Gentrys go top 20, sort-of anticipating that sha-la-la chorus off Amarillo a year ahead of Neil Sedaka, Junior Walker gets another top 40, ditto Mama Cass & Edwin Starr, while Peggy Lipton gets a first with the Laura Nyro song.

New entries are thin on the ground, just Cliff & Hank going for a second duet at 69, Tommy Roe continues his post-Dizzy comeback, early 60’s band The Tokens cover The Beach Boys, Dusty pops in with a track I’ve never heard before, and another 60’s veteran Bobby Vee at 75 with a song he wrote himself. I took my mum to see a 60’s package tour featuring Tommy Roe and Bobby Vee back in the day. They were great.

21st February 1970

It’s 4 weeks on top for Bridge, still holding off Spirit In The Sky and as the only other challengers are 3 tracks from the Simon & Garfunkel album at 3, 5 & 8. Cecilia and El Condor Pasa were tracks I loved in Singapore and onward since, I didn’t hear any covers at the time and I’ve yet to hear any that come anywhere near being as good as the originals. The Only Living Boy In New York I didn’t really notice until 1976 but it has grown in stature ever since, not least helped by a great version from Everything But The Girl.

Robin Gibb has 2 top 20 tracks, and the highest new entry is from a revamped Supremes, now minus Diana Ross, and plus new lead vocalist Jean Terrell who did a cracking job from Up The Ladder To The Roof onwards, in at 29 here. Mary Wilson, now the only original member fought Berry Gordy who wanted Syreeta (future Mrs Stevie Wonder) – Syreeta was great but the tones of Jean suited later fab tracks more.

Other newies: The Jackson 5 side, and 21st century-charting in the UK, Who’s Loving You is in at 53, Dave Dee gets a first solo entry minus the gang, The Dave Clark 5 do a fairly pedestrian cover of The Youngbloods’ Everybody Get Together, Joe Dolan has an old-fashioned uptempo return, Polly Brown debuts with Pickettywitch 4 years ahead of Sweet Dreams’ Abba cover and her own solo hit, Elvis pops in with a semi-decent Kentucky Rain as his career starts to descend into Las Vegas schmaltz or pomp or both generally, a Jimmy Cliff track I don’t know replaces Viet-Nam in the list, a Beach Boys single I’ve never heard in my life drops in, The Chi-Lites keep their run of entries going, ditto Gladys Knight & The Pips, and also The Archies who’s latest single was one of their most uninspired tracks and a bizarre choice given the TV theme at 35 was way better even if it didn’t sound like Sugar Sugar.

28th February 1970

It’s a new entry at 1 for The Beatles – not for the first time, probably not for the last time – as their farewell UK single Let It Be arrives ahead of the album recorded during the difficult break-up before Abbey Road. It’s one of Paul’s best songs, even he was generally unhappy with the Phil Spector strings on some tracks, and gives the fabs a 42nd chart entry in their 4th year of charting, and their 8th number 1. Singer-songwriter with the smooth voice, James Taylor is busy pushing his new album at the moment, but 50 years ago his then-newish album was out with the classic track Fire And Rain about ready for release as a single, good enough reason for me to enter it at 24 – certainly a song I was aware of in 1970.

The Jackson 5 get a second top 40 track as they also enter with their 2nd single and third chart entry ABC at 63 – basically I Want You Back part 2 and my least fave of their first 6 singles, though Sigala did a good revamp a few years back. In retrospect it still sounds fresh-ish and energetic. As a staple of US variety TV shows at the time, I did get to see the boys perform on Singapore showings of The Ed Sullivan Show and others like the cool Flip Wilson Show and the fab Andy Williams Show. “Can I have a cookie?” Cue man in a bear suit. You had to be there….

In at 65, Joni Mitchell gets the first of 2 from her brand new album this week 50 years ago – it’s Big Yellow Taxi, much covered and very very much an early description of Planet Earth in the 21st Century, as her album track Woodstock (and soon to be covered) the ode to the famous hippy festival pops in at 74. Tyrone Davis gets another chart entry, and The Five Stairsteps return with their 6th chart entry O-o-h Child, originally B side to the poor cover of Dear Prudence, the future hit for Dino in the 80’s, and covers by The Detroit Spinners, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Mary Wilson, Hall & Oates, among many others, and a sample by Janet Jackson give a clue to the regard it’s held in. Not bad for a B side.
