It’s straight in at 1 for the 1975 top 5 single from John Lennon, the gorgeous ethereal #9 Dream, a minot hit everywhere except my charts, and even then I under-appreciated it, it’s one of his very best post-Beatles tracks and becomes his 9th solo chart-topper since first doing it with the Plastic Ono Band in 1969 on Give Peace A Chance (that band is effectively John & Yoko Lennon in much the same way as Wings is effectively Paul & Linda McCartney). Spurred by a new “Ultimate Mix” album of his greatest solo tracks to mark his 80th birthday, in another 6 months it’ll be sobering to reflect John will have been dead for longer than he was alive. That also gives me an excuse to chart the wonderful Mind Games from 1973 at 6, another minor hit that deserved better, Beautiful Boy which peaked at 2 as an album track that should have been the 3rd single off Double Fantasy in 1980, and Stand By Me the Ben E. King cover which topped my charts in 1975. Meanwhile Dubstar get a second chart entry with an acostic cover of Free As A Bird.
Talking of late popstars, they are falling so fast that new tribute entries are knocking out other tribute entries of the chart, this week it’s Eddie Van Halen, with 1984’s Jump jumping in, and the fab Johnny Nash who introduced me to pop reggae back in 1968 and the fab Hold Me Tight, back at 19 52 years on, his signature tune I Can See Clearly Now which is on it’s 3rd visit, and his 1975 UK chart-topper Tears On My Pillow which under-performed for me at the time. Following a Teddy Pendergrass life bio, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes Wake Up Everybody also returns 44 years on.
Back in the current pop world, Kylie gets a 2nd top 10 of the year with a massive leap for Magic, Gabby Barrett gets a first powerful top 10 along with Charlie Puth, who’s been there before, ditto Roisin Murphy still kicking that top 10 22 years into her dance career, while Georgia Lines gets a first. Shawn Mendes is on the fast route into the top 20, it’s a Wonder as he climbs 55 places, and Marshmello & Demi Lovato both return to the top 40 with a big climb, It’s Ok Not To Be OK about that. The Weeknd enters the 40 with a 41-place kick on Save Your Tears, so he won;t be crying that Over You is dropping.
Fleetwood Mac’s 1987 chart-topper and classic, Little Lies is back cos it’s selling on itunes, and I love it, Vera Blue gets a 2nd chart entry, Gary Barlow extends his solo hits to 22 years or so, or 28 including Take That as his ol mucker Robbie is a bit higher doing the same. The Buble also has a longer run, giving a helping hand. Other chart returnees in a hectic week: The Killers, Kiesza, New Order (39 years and counting), Bieber, Jax Jones, AU/RA, Alicia Keys & Labrinth! Phew! Had to extend to 95 places again, doh!

It’s 2 weeks on top for Jessi who’s still feeling a bit numb numb numb as Clean Bandit get a second top 3 with Tick Tock. Calvin Harris & The Weeknd add to their already decent list of top 10’s, while highest climber into the 40 is Keith Urban making One Too Many with P!nk, Keith’s had more than a handful of top 40’s and P!nk’s had more than 30 in 21 years. Steps are also back in the 40 with a 15th in 22 years, rather more than I’d have expected!
Shania Twain’s on her 11th Top 40, this time with Orville Peck in 22 years, Sheryl Crow’s on her 15th in 26 years, Sam Smith’s on an 8th in 7 years, and Nik Kershaw is back in the 40 for a 7th time after a gap of 35 years! New entries are thinner on the ground, giving me an opportunity to cut the chart down to 85, and includes a brace of oldies selling on itunes following TV exposure or other reasons, Show Me Heaven back 30 years on, We’ve Only Just Begun 50 years on, Hocus Pocus 47 years on, El Bimbo 45 years on, and Angie Baby 46 years on following the death of Helen Reddy. Maria Mckee topped my chart in 1990 and Helen Reddy in 1975.
New newies from Marshmello and Demi Lovato, Shawn Mendes, Ella Henderson and Roger Sanchez (who’s been absent for 19 years), David Guetta & Sia (who’ve been active throughout the last 20 years), and The Weeknd all continue their ongoing chart runs, while it’s a debut for actor/singer Matt Bomer currently starring in super-hero Doom Patrol TV series (which I read in comic books as a kid) with assistance from Alan Mingo Jr as Maura Lee Korrupt – geddit?! – gaying it up together on Kelly Clarkson’s People Like Us in a recent episode I just watched. Kelly never charted with it for me, oddly.

It’s a first week on top for South-Korean-based US act Jessi with the pop diva track, Numb, great vocal. As the top end of the chart keeps a stranglehold in my affections, only Sophie Ellis-Bextor sneaks in with her first top 10 since Bittersweet hit 7 in 2020. Meanwhile Bon Jovi get a first top 20 in 11 years and only their 3rd this century. Erasure take the 1988 classic into the 20 as current track Nerves Of Steel gives a 2nd new top of 2020.
Roisin Murphy leaps into the top 30 with Something More, her 3rd of 2020, while veterans Pretenders also get a second top 40 of 2020, namechecking Barcelona where I was the other week, and NYC, where I was in 1989. A quiet week for new entries, with 90’s top 10 The Wannadies cover You & Me Song entering at 68 in a nice version from Joy Crookes. Kylie shows she’s still magic as the second Disco track drops with Say Something still riding high, and an Italian edit from 1990 brings Advice For The Young At Heart back into my chart 30 years on for Tears For Fears.

It’s Miley Cyrus on top for a 4th week, still ruling with one of the best pop singles of the year, and holding off a fab track from Jessi. St Lucia get a first top 10, McFly grab only the 2nd top 10 of their career with the joyful Happiness, it only took 7 years for their first, and 9 years for their second, so roll on 2031 then. Groove Armada have taken even longer – 13 years since their last top 10, and 21 years since the first, averaging one a decade. See them also in the 2030’s! In at 14, highest new entry is from Sophie Ellis-Bextor in a case of sweet revenge, as I was starting my clubbing days in 2001 and she was topping my charts for 3 weeks before getting kicked off by Alcazar’s Crying At The Discotheque. So she’s covered it, very nicely, giving her a first top 20 in 10 years.
Timbaland guests on Bruno Martini’s Bend The Knee to get his first top 20 since topping my chart in 2010 with Nelly Furtado on Morning After Dark, while Calvin Harris gets his first top 20 in 2 years, in what is a long list of at least 12. As Bon Jovi go top 40 with the Covid-19 upbeat Do What You Can, their most relevant song in 20 years, Sheryl Crow also jumps on board with the more general-themed anti-Trump song In The End at 70, it’s biting searing lyrics telling it like it is and extending her chart relevance to 26 years. Meanwhile Saara Alto & Drag Race pal Baga Chipz shoot into the 40, giving Saara a 2nd top 40 two years on from her Finland Eurovision chart-topper Monsters, as Ava Max gets an Ace-Of-Base-ish 3rd top 40.
Roisin Murphy enters at 60 with Something More, the latest in her line of recent charting dance tracks 22 years on from Moloko days, Paloma Faith makes a big ballad return hoping for a 6th chart-topper in 11 years and a 3rd decade, Better Than This at 68, while another former Eurovision act is back at 73 as Dami Im gets a 3rd 4 years from her Aussie top 3 Sound Of Silence, with Paper Dragon. It’s 3 weeks on top for Miley Cyrus as 1989’s Yello top 5 Of Course I’m Lying reaches a new peak of 3, still a great under-rated minor hit single. Jessi gets a first top 10, the US-born, South Korean-based singer doing what BTS can’t quite manage lower down in my chart. LCD Soundsystem get a Human League classic a much-deserved top 10 spot 39 years late, and Groove Armada get their highest-charting track since Song 4 Mutya hit 8 in 2007. London Grammar get a first top 40 since Hell To The Liars hit 10 2 years ago, and Marty Wilde gets his first-ever top 40 52 years since he would last have had a chart hit (Abergavenny would definitely have been a big top 5 fave in summer ’68), though he’s had loads of songs chart, includign a chart-topper in 1968 for The Casuals – Jesamine – so pretty confident that’s the longest wait any songwriter will ever have to wait to get a solo debut chart entry in my charts!
It’s a quiet week for new entries, giving me the chance to cut the chart down to 90 (phew!, 100 is too much work!) and so the highest new entry, is err, Steps! Cheesefest continues 22 years on, and just to underline I enjoy a slice of cheddar Saara Alto also debuts with the surprisingly decent collab with Baga Chipz. Saara has topped my charts with the fab Eurovision flop Monsters. Robbed she was!
Travis are back rapidly after A Ghost, with Susanna Hoffs on tow, the Bangles-singer not having graced my charts since, errr, well, need to look that up! At least 24 years, gulp! Still, it extends her chart run to 35 years since The bangles debuted with the fab Going Down To Liverpool went top 10 (happy supporting Merseyside, even if it’s an American who wrote it – Katrina of The Waves fame – and sang it). The Struts debut with the help of a famous friend for another Covid-themed track, giving Robbie 24 years of solo chart appearances, and 28 including Take That – and that’s a fact I wouldn’t have believed in 1992! Finally, another 80’s act is back, Nik Kershaw sneaks in for the first time in over 30 years, while extending his run now to 37 years. He has, though, been knocking about as a songwriter in the interim, notably for Chesney Hawkes and Let Loose, and is still touring showcasing his new material (I saw him the other year and he’s still fab, some 36 years since I caught his Riddle tour).

It’s back up to the top spot for Midnight Sky as Miley grabs a second week on top, with Clean Bandit getting their first top 5 big climber in 3 years, and surprisingly only their second top 10 track – Rockabye was the other. BORNS make the top 10 shockingly 4 years late with Electric Love, Tame Impala get a 4th top 10, and a first for 3 years, Tiwa Savage is an Afrobeats act to watch as she gets a first sultry top 10, and Sub Focus get a first-ever top 10 after 8 years of trying, along with Wilkinson who almost made it 6 years ago.
In a hectic chart McFly get a 4th top 20 in 16 years of chart entries, not a big hit ratio, but 18 on the list anyway so I usually like them but rarely love them and Happiness is their 2nd-biggest track, behind only Shine A Light which hit 4. Lots of oldies return this week, due to song contests, TV show spots or World Record Store Day, belatedly releasing a bunch of vinyl singles, 1989’s top 5 Of Course I’m Lying the highest in at 19, Nazereth returning with their fab 1973 version of Joni Mitchell’s This Flight Tonight, 1990’s Loaded bringing Primal Scream back, Peter Schilling’s Major Tom back for the 3rd time since debuting in 1984, 1973’s Radar Love from Golden Earring getting a 3rd run in my charts, Madness’ Night Boat To Cairo getting a 3rd run since topping my chart in 1980, and unreleased 1973 Rolling Stones track Scarlet debuts with Jimmy Page on hand as they knock out two Robert Plant tracks from the rundown. Well, isn’t it Ironic? Yes it is.
Biggest climber is Marty Wilde who’s been having a music career since I was one year old and his daughter Kim hadn’t quite yet been born, and notable debuts this week include a cover of Human League’s fab Seconds, giving them a first chart mention in 13 years, and only a second listing, at 24; Groove Armada popped back recently, and return again at 27 making it 21 years since At The River went top 5. 22 years since That Don’t Impress me Much did impress on top of my charts Shania Twain is back again, this time with Orville Peck, a quirky duet that one; Jessie Ware makes a 3rd entry this year; and finally Sean Ono Lennon contributes to a Marc Bolan covers album and sneaks in with Mambo Sun, giving him a debut over 51 years since his mum and dad debuted together, with Give Peace A Chance, 47 years since John Lennon had a solo debut, 39 years since Yoko had a solo debut, 36 years since half-brother Julian Lennon had a solo debut, and also making it the first time 2 children featuring in charting songs both made the charts themselves: Julian in Hey Jude in my first-ever 1968 chart, and Sean when Beautiful Boy belatedly made my charts as an oldie album track.
