November 1999 Charts

The gorgeous When We Are Together gives Texas an 8th Number One in 3 years, bit of a roll they were one! Backstreet Boys pop back on top, though, to total 3 weeks at the summit before a millennium reissue of John Lennon’s classic singles bundled enters at 1: Happy Xmas War Is Over, Imagine, Give Peace A Chance had already hit the top spot in multiple years, but originally 1972, 1980, and 1969 respectively. Happy Xmas War Is Over holds the record for the largest number of years that it held the top spot in for at least one week, that’s several in the 70’s, the 80’s, the 90’s to date.

Of course as everyone prepared for the end of the century apocalypse as all computers crashed and burned unable to cope with a calendar change, it was an opportunity to re-release lots of oldies, and for big acts to avoid bunging anything new out. At least anything of much quality. Happily old-timers the Lightning Seeds had the terrific Life’s Too Short in my top 5, the wonderfullt cheery Steal My Sunshine gave Len 5 minutes of fame, and Garbage had a Bond Theme delight as The World Is Not Enough gives them a Top 3 largely-forgotten addition to their list of great singles.

Smooth bounces back again into my top 10, Culture Club have a great ballad out – Cold Shoulder – featuring a good version of Bowie’s Starman on the B side, for a 17-year run of big hits (well, for George at any rate). Finally, a new entry at 20 for an obscure classic, Your Lies, from Shelby Lynn, a Phil Spector-styled passionate and vitriolic masterpiece from one of the great unknown and critically-acclaimed albums, I Am Shelby Lynn, an album that rewards repeat listens and taken as a whole, a journey through personal drama and the blues, country, pop. Sadly the original video is not on you tube, it was effective, but the one that is is still pretty powerful in it’s simplicity.

October 1999

The oldies dominate the top of my chart as classic 1968 Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb track By The Time I Get To Phoenix enters at 1 for a 3-week run – bearing in mind it never charted in the UK, but was very well-known, and critically respected, it’s about time is all I can say, and gave Glen a number one 29 years after his first, and his fifth to date. Bad news for Chris Isaak, but Wicked Game still hits 2, and had already been a number one in 1990, and the song is back in the UK and my charts this very week dance-stylee (for Parra For Cuva).

The Backstreet Boys get their 3rd chart-topper as Larger Than Life shoves Glen aside, and then that was more or less it for them as Britney and N’Sync hogged all the best songs from Max Martin.A former boyband member, albeit the generally limp New Kids On The Block, grabs a number 2 as Jordan Knight’s delicious and playful Give It To You outdoes their entire back catalogue in one single. Pet Shop Boys, meanwhile, have a rare non-topper single, as one of their more well-recalled later tracks, the very disco New York City Boy, peaks at 5 – the album Nightlife has better dance tracks on it though it’s still pretty damn good.

Future 2000 world-smash Smooth, goes top 10 for Santana and Rob Thomas (off Matchbox 20), all of whom have some number one action in 2000 coming up, and surprisingly classic album-track Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds also under-performed with all the chart action, going top 5 only for The Beatles. R. Kelly gets another of is occasional top 5 hits, as Turn Back The Hands Of Time has a 50’s flavour to it and hits 4, and Texas keep the non-stop run of fabulous singles going as When We Are Together takes it 60’s vibe to 2. The one that beat them to the top? Texas! Album-track Tell Me The Answer is pure classic Prince-soul-styled brilliance and really should have been a single, one of their best ever tracks, and utterly obscure.

Melanie C shows she can do it outside the Spice Girls and goes both down and gaga at 5. Britney’s also crazy at 8, while Tom Jones enlists the Cardigans for a Talking Heads song which leaves them burning down the house at 9, Tom’s umpteenth top 10 in 31 years, and yet another reinvention of his career – that’s how he’s kept going of course! S Club 7 have an S Club Party, heyyy, hooo, one of their best singles, Christina Aguilera announces her debut Genie in a bottle, at 9, Madness gallop into the top 10 with Johnny The Horse for a mad 20 years-worth of them, Gabrielle has some Sunshine at 10, Five Keep On Movin’ with a great pop single, while elsewhere there’s some dance, country, opera, europop, rock, r n b, and Latin-pop for a spot of variety…

My 1999 Charts – August and September

img699

AUGUST 1999

3 weeks at number one for the awesome Summer Son, one of Texas’ best records and their 6th chart-topper, only to be knocked off by Canada’s Bran Van 3000 who grab one week with the fab Drinking In LA, before themselves getting booted off by TLC and their second-best best record, the gorgeous and touching Unpretty hitting the top 4 years after Waterfalls did the same.

Other biggies over the summer sun, Mercury Rev’s Goddess On A Hiway at 4, Enrique’s debut hit Bailamos at 7, the fab Groove Armada sampling Patti Page for chilled atmospheric At The River at 4, Mel C rocking it up at 9 with You’re Going Down, and James peaking at 2 with I Know What You’re Here For.

Planet Perfecto rehash Grace’s fabulous Not Over Yet, and get an instant number 9 with one of those dance tracks that improves with age, as exciting as the day it was remixed. There’s even room for a decent bit of boyband pop as A1 make us the First To Believe at 7, Ocean Colour Scene show there’s Profit In Peace at 10 – if only it were true – and Pet Shop Boys disco chanter New York City Boy enters at 24. REM cover Tommy James 1971 US hit beautifully Draggin’ The LIne, and Yazoo pop back at 6 with Only You 17 years on.

Westlife’s If I Let You Go actually makes my Top 40, not often that happened then, and Divine Comedy’s Fear Of The Pollen Count made my Top 20, which often happened then. Even Geri Halliwell joins Mel C, albeit at 30, with Mi Chico Latino, the record I always associate with a car drive to Torquay with my brother and nephew to watch the (almost-total) eclipse of the sun. That was fab, all the sheep on the hillside overlooking the town started braying when it got dark. Ah memories….

SEPTEMBER 1999

Bob Marley gets remixed Funkstar Deluxe 90‘s stylee (again) but this time it’s a real-old obscure track that gets the treatment, and it’s Faaaab – Sun Is Shining, appropriately for the eclipse. Following the Sixpence None The Richer pleasant cover of There She Goes, that well-known 1989 love song to Heroine (honest!) The La’s definitive version comes back and even bigger 3rd time round, going all the way to 1 for 3 weeks. That melody is a killer, which is quite appropriate I suppose.

Enrique hits 3, I do love my Spanish rhythms, gets my dancing shoes all a shuffling and a swaying, while Jordan Knight hits 7 with the terrific Give It To You, some weeks ahead of it’s UK chart debut. Better by far than the entire dreary NKOTB back catalogue. Moloko make their Top 10 debut with the great Sing It Back, and Tom Jones unlikely current duets album gives him a Talking Heads cover hit with the fab Cardigans, Burning Down The House.

Macy Gray announces “I Try”, and so she does at 6, while Supergrass are Moving to 12. Britney’s driving me crazy at 14, and Texas, bang in at 5 with the wonderful When We Are Together, all retro Motown delight. The Beatles are all Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, as a never-before-charted Sgt Pepper highlight album track 32 years on, and long overdue – even Elton had already charted it (with John Lennon assistance) in 1974, but the Fabs deserved that hit! New at 18, Santana is back with a vengeance at 18, helped in no small part by Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas, as Smooth brings that Latino guitar hero sound back 22 years since his last real hit. Yay! Not forgetting Mark Anthony, as I continue in my Latino music groove, at 20. Wonder if he knows J-Lo?

My 1999 Charts – July

JULY 1999

Madge gets a full dozen chart-toppers with Beautiful Stranger, one of her best, and most joyous, records, soundtrack to the fab and groovy Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Shagtastic! Suede are having none of that though, and knock her off for two equally fab weeks at Number One: well, She’s In Fashion, and the melody is just marvellous. It wouldn’t be right for Pet Shop Boys to have a new track out, with an outrageously long title like I Don’t Know What You Want But I Can’t Give It Anymore, and me not have it top the chart. While it’s not one of their very best singles, it’s very fine anyway, pumping along nicely.

Other Top 10 biggies? Texas’s Summer Son, a fantastic record, one of their best, some boyband action from Backstreet Boys and A1, J-Lo gets her first (but not her last) lo those 15 years ago, and Dixie Chicks lovely There’s Your Trouble, huge in the States, I mean HUGE. Until they made some very sensible comments about the political moron running the country, at which point their career nosedived, but their integrity was intact. Which is more than you can say about the worldwide mess said moron has contributed to in no small part.

Roxette, as ever, pop back with another Top 10 hit. I really must add up how many they’ve had, I suspect it’s shockingly large! Semisonic nearly get there, too, with Secret Smile. Saw them live at the time, they were great. Pity they never broke through big. Madness get their first Top 10 in 13 years, with Lovestruck, but this was a comeback that’s turned into a stayer, rather happily, as they still put out great singles. New Kids’ Jordan Knight gets an early top 20 hit with me, ahead of the UK charts, as Give It To Me is terrific, and James, another still-going cracking band, and another under-rated one, hit my number 2 with the great I Know What I’m Here For.

Culture Club are back! Away for as long as Madness, I also saw them on the tour supporting Your Kisses Are Charity single and the album – a glitter ball fell on poor George’s head, and he wasn’t happy about it! Pleasant enough gig though, anyway. Destiny’s Child have Bills Bills Bills debuting, though Beyonce certainly has none to worry about these days. Beverley Knight gets an instant Top 10 with Greatest Day, while John Williams scores the new Star Wars film and into the charts, albeit less memorably than the original. It did, however, give him 20 years as hit-maker, 22 as hit-composer.

Bran Van 3000, Canadian rappy-cred popster’s enter instantly at 5 with Drinking In LA, a classic record, and one that unforgivably wasn’t a big hit. Good thing it was in 2000, then, or I would have remained miffed about it. Pearl Jam cover a morbid American hit oldie, and I have to say it’s my fave thing they ever did. Hey ho, in at 48. Nik Kershaw has another comeback 15 years on, with Les Rhythms Digitales’ Sometimes, and Cast, some ex-Spice Girls, Alanis and Steps pop in there too.

Chart Positions after the artist are for the weeks of 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th July…

My 1999 Charts – June

JUNE 1999 charts

Shania Twain is the singer of the moment, continuing on top, even though it don’t impress her much. It don’t impress The Osmonds either who are kept off the top with the re-issue of Crazy Horses, doing much better than it did in 1972. The Backstreet Boys prove that Florida hit-machine keeps on a rolling out the choons, with the fab I Want It That Way grabbing a week on top before Bill Withers classic non-hit Ain’t No Sunshine finally repeats what Michael Jackson did, also in 1972 – taking it to the top. He also had a number one in 1972 with the even-more-classic Lean On Me. Bill is great. The last number one is a return to the top for Petula Clark, and the original classic version of Downtown, muuuuuch better than the 80’s dance remix I’d previously had to make do with.

Also doing well, Shed Seven at 5, Jamiroquai at 5, Ricky Martin at 7, and the Backstreet Boys pals N’Sync at 6. Suede’s Fashion-tastic single goes top 10, and Whitney Houston does something she’s never done before – got into the top 2 with the fab My Love Is Your Love, proper soul, real emotion as opposed to OTT blandness. Pity she was already into the drugs by then…

New into the chart in the last two weeks of June? Adam Rickett at 6. Eh???! Shorley shome mishtake! Nah, it was a decent dance toon. 1974 UK chart-topper She never really impressed me much at the time – but the Elvis Costello cover version for Notting Hill, oh yes indeedy, at 9, beating off even the Pet Shop Boys new single, trying to outdo even their own long-titled hits (they tend to go for one-word titles or very long ones!). Billy Fury’s great A Wondrous Place pops in along with Dixie Chicks and the ever-present Roxette – it’s been an eye-opener reviewing my old charts and seeing how often Roxette are in the upper reaches!

Finally, I’m amused to see Hole, Cartoons, Chemical Brothers and Nas all vying for places in the lower end. I do enjoy a mix of moods and genres….

My 1999 Charts – May

Image

May 1999

Lotsa chart-toppers, Texas get yet another week and hit number one with In Our Lifetime, then Fatboy Slim get their only number one…and it’s not Praise You, it’s Right Here Right Now, a fabulous insistent dance track. Still sounds great, and it’s Norman Cook’s only number one as an artist. Aaaahhh. Director Baz Luhrmann though manages to give good advice (Wear Sunscreen) and tops both the Uk and my charts. It’s not music, of course, except incidentally, but it’s got that certain appealing something. Makes a change from films. Finally, Shania Twain takes a great country song and turns it all dancepop, and turns out a winner. Her best record by far, and 2 weeks on top this month. I suspect there might be more in June though….!

Other big toons? Bryan Adams, The Pretenders back with a greta single (Human) which peaks at 4. if it seems like The Pretenders feature in a lot of May chart Top 10’s, well, they do! Go figure, Chrissie Hynde was in May 2014 Top 10 as well. She’s very obviously regular as clockwork. Jamiroquai are back with a great disco hit (Canned Heat). Not sure what they were labelling them as at the time dancemusic wise, but it’s disco, trust me. Shania does poor Sixpence None The Richer a disservice – holding them at 2, a shame as Kiss Me is a great pop record, but it never managed to overhaul Ms Twain. Never the Twain shall meet, obviously. Sorry!

Backstreet Boys, meanwhile, want it That Way. I always suspected that to be the case, and it’s a great pop song hitting 5. PJ Harvey pops up with an instant Top 10 (The Wind), Sugar Ray’s catchy US hit crosses over to the UK and my number 4, and ditto Everlast, with the fab What It’s Like at 2. I was more into American rock than Britrock, possibly due to the number of florida holidays I was enjoying at the time (it was my escape from problems) and the TV and radio overdosing while there. One UK band I DID like though was Travis, Driftwood at 10, a melody to kill for. I was in Florida this month, I can confirm, cos Jennifer Lopez debuts inside my Top 20 – I bought the CD single of If You Had My Love in Florida – and begin an on-off chart relationship between us for the next 15 years. She’s on again at the moment, with Wisin and Ricky Martin.

NOTE: numbers after artist are the chart positions for month of May from the date listed

My 1999 Charts – March & April

Image

MARCH 1999

Back to the old format as I’m even further behind postings. Doh!

Anyways, Britney rules. Pure pop on top. It’s a great pop record. As is advert-pushed Andy Williams Music To watch Girls By and the anthemic Can;t Take My Eyes Off You, originally a Frankie Valli & Four Seasons song, covered by Andy, Pets Shop Boys, and hosts of others. Deservedly Andy’s return to the top spot, first since 1970’s Home Lovin’ Man. Classic crooner of the highest order. Final number one of the month is arguably the best record of the 90’s, just stunning, life-affirming, vitriolic, urgent, and introducing Greg whatsisname as a great songwriter, the New Radicals You Get What You Give. He instantly gave up being a pop star and let others get the limelight with his songs. Dude!

Roxette keep the Top 10 entries a-coming, a decade on, ditto Madonna 15 years on, while Martine McCutcheon announces her brief presence with a great ballad.
New entries from Travis, quietly announcing a good run of melodic singles, Suzi Quatro returning with Orbital (!!) after a long gap of over a decade, and an upstart rapper called Eminem name-checks himself something rotten, and in good humour. Wonder what happened to him. Mostly though it’s bland fair for the most part till the last week of the month for new stuff, and Fatboy Slim popping in with their best record, Texas proving they still had it bouncing in at 12, and Lou Reed finally charting the epic Satellite Of Love at 2. I was obviously 5 years ahead of the game there, albeit not in remix form…

APRIL 1999 Charts

Another week on top for the awesome New Radicals, but it was Abba revival that overwhelmed my charts in the second week, headed by SOS at 1 for 2 weeks. One of Abba’s major classics, for some inexplicable reason it failed to make my Top 10 first time round – justice at last, giving Abba a complete run of official topping singles from SOS through to Thank You For The Music. Why the Abba invasion? 25th Anniversary of Waterloo at Eurovision and repackages and re-issues of albums and singles which allowed uncharted tracks to debut, plus SOS (I bent the rules for one occasion, for only Abba).

The other chart-topper is Texas, band of the moment, with a great single, while Top 10 acts included Catatonia and Cardigans with fab singles, Martine McCutcheon having a perfect moment – it was all downhill from here. The Offspring have another great single, and manage to grab a slot amongst all the Abba tracks. Lower down, and worth mentioning, TLC’s well-known No Scrubs, Bryan Adams singles career coming towards it’s conclusion, perennials UB40, and Westlife getting into my Top 40. Not often they did that, Swear It Again being one of their least-forgettable UK number ones, excepting those one might prefer to forget….
