My November 1986 Charts

4th November 1986

It’s a 3rd week on top for Pet Shop Boys, with Berlin’s classic movie theme breathing down their neck at 2, and Lloyd-Webber’s gorgeous Phantom song at 3. Anita Baker finally makes the top 10 with Sweet Love, and Shaky gets a rare top 10. His 4th, but his hit-rate is quite low. Madness chug into the 20, Boo! That’s “Boo!” as in ghostly fright, not an exclamation of displeasure. Kim Wilde also goes top 20 with her Supremes cover, climbing slowly, while Duran notoriously climb faster. Highest new entry is Debbie Harry’s best post-Blondie solo single, French Kissing In The USA, at 22, for 8 years of non-stop success in my charts, and China Crisis are back with the nice Arizona Sky at 26. That under-performed Uk chart-wise sadly.

Mel & Kim get a big climb into the 30, and Erasure, Swing Out Sister and Bon Jovi into the 40 ditto, as the fab emotive, hugging Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush are new at 39. Don’t Give Up is timeless advice. Future cheesy anthem Europe enters at 61. I was heading a Highways team, surveying Dorset roads back in this day, and a few weeks later I had a heated discussion with my young post-grad music student assistant which annoyed me so much it still burns cos I was so sure I was right in my opinion and he was wrong in his assessment that the chart were rubbish and the music disposable destined to be forgotten. “I bet you” I said, “that Berlin and Europe, at the very least, are remembered decades from now”. They had the ring of lasting popularity to me. Nice to be right.

The Cars main man is solo at 62, Madonna gifts a song for the first and last time, to male model Nick Kamen, he of the Levi 501 laundrette strip off advert. In at 70, just ahead of Janet Jackson and a more pedestrian follow-up to a fab single, in Control, another movie song from Kenny Loggins, and a lovely song from Bucks Fizz keeping each other warm, not to mention the cockles of my heart.

11th November 1986

It’s a first week on top for Berlin’s movie classic, with Anita Baker looking Sweet at 2. Debbie Harry leaps into the top 5, the first time she has troubled that end of the chart for almost 6 years with Rapture, as Kissing The Pink get a second top 10 3 years on from The Last Film. Bon Jovi’s future classic anthem shoots up to 12 and Swing Out Sister Breakout into the 20. OMD get the highest new entry with the laid back We Love You, as future chart biggie Europe is up 29 places to 32, but is leapfrogged by Nick “Madonna” Kamen at 31. The Smiths, Tina Turner and Cutting Crew all return to the 40.

Eurythmics also go low-key with a sort-of Xmas ballad that everyone has forgotten these days, new at 49, just ahead of Spandau’s comeback after other projects, the Northern Ireland-referencing Through The Barricades. The under-rated Lone Justice enter at 56 with Shelter, though singer Maria McKee would eventually top the UK chart, Greg Abbott’s Shake You Down gets a decent new entry, Human League return with another Jam & Lewis track, this one uptempo, and under-performing considering the track record of all parties concerned in my charts. That also goes for Kate Bush’s Experimental single, and Frankie’s Wasteland, while Boston get a brief one-week return to my charts after, ooh, 9 years away. Ultravox scrape in as their best chart days are well and truly behind them at this point.

18th November 1986

It’s 2 weeks on top for Berlin as Shaky gets a career-high of 3 in my charts – with one of his most obscure hits! Bon Jovi make it 2 consecutive top 5’s with their signature tune, and Mel & Kim get a first top 10 and get the ball rolling proper on the SAW years of pop dominance. Kim Wilde makes it 5 years of top 10’s and Madness 7 years. Nick Kamen climbs into the 20, and Bucks Fizz shoot up into the 40 – keeping their record of top 40’s 100% in 5 years.

Highest new entry is Womack & Womack keeping up the run of post-Love Wars tracks to chart, at 42 with Soul Love/Soul Man, as Cyndi Lauper leapfrogs herself as True Colors drops like a brick and the good Change Of Heart enters at 51. Cameo are back with Candy, sweet! Phil Fearon is back with another cover, this time the 1968 Showstoppers song Ain’t Nothin’ But a Houseparty, and some substantial goodies enter at the lower end, from Robbie Nevil’s C’Est La Vie, Oran ‘Juice’ Jones terrific The Rain, The Communards best-single to-date So Cold The Night, and also a bunch of lesser entries from Glass Tiger (over-rated), Simple Minds, a Springsteen cover of Edwin Starr’s classic War, Grace Jones, and a superstar duet from Elton and Cliff, who collectively had made the UK charts every year since 1958, and for quite some time after 1986, Elton having non-stop runs from 1971 through 1999, while Cliff had 1958 through 1974. In my charts Elton had a non-stop run from 1971 through to 2002 with new material, or 2004 including oldies.

25th November 1986

It’s a sudden leap to the top spot for Erasure, Sometimes has pottered around climbing slowly for a few weeks, before stopping Debbie Harry getting a solo topper – though Blondie would be back for some more in the 21st century anyway. Vince Clark had already topped with Yazoo’s Only You 4 years earlier, and it wouldn’t be his last chart-topper either. Cyndi Lauper rockets into the top 20 with Change Of Heart, easily outdoing True Colors which was pleasantly dull in comparison, and giving her a 4th top 20.

Highest newie is The Damned, 7 years of chart entries and counting, followed by a 3rd for Fuzzbox, both inside the 40, just behind a leaping Jam & Lewis Human League, and ahead of a cool Oran ‘Juice’ Jones, both climbing fast. Genesis also return with one of their very best singles, Land Of Confusion and it’s Spitting Image video, and the smooth Shake You Down gives Gregory Abbott a debut. Actor and comedian Billy Crystal, long a fave from the sitcom Soap, and en route to movie stardom, slips out a whimsical US hit single, You Look Marvellous, done in the style of latin Hollywood movie star Fernando Llamas, and tickles my fancy as I also liked Fernando. The Housemartins cover the Isleys, and instantly outdo them with their accapella version.

Talking of Yazoo, Alison Moyet is also back with a goodie, Is This Love, and Howard Jones & Five Star add to their list, while new in at 75, briefly, it’s Wendy Richard reprising her 1962 smash Come Outside, which I adored as a 4 or 5-year-old and thereafter, though she swaps lead singer from Mike Sarne to Mike Berry who had been hitless for 6 years, but gets 11 years of chart entries since his 1975 cover of Don’t Be Cruel, some 10 years since his 60’s popstar career stalled.

My September 1986 Charts

2nd September 1986

It’s Human League on top for a second week, presiding over a Jam & Lewis top 2, and a big pop week for me: the week I got on Radio 1 on Mike Read’s Pop Quiz, backstage with The Real Thing, and the week I bought my first Now That’s What I Call Music which boosted tracks in my chart which were on it. Highest new entry is the brilliant 20th anniversary of Eleanor Rigby (the reason for the high chart position, Yellow Submarine is for completion purposes only by that time, though I loved it as a kid), the Fabs keeping up with the reissues.

Big climbs for Tina Turner, The Communards, The Psychedelic Furs, OMD and Cutting Crew into the 40, with big new tracks entering lower down: You Can Call Me Al, Paul Simon back with a biggie to signal classic Graceland; Chairmen Of The Board back with their first fab track in 13 years, having topped my chart in 1973; House arrives proper with Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk; Cameo do that much-covered future codpiece classic Word Up; Run DMC innovate a rap/rock combo with Aerosmith, and boost the 70’s rockers back into fashion in the US, and chart success at last in the UK setting up the rest of the decade and the 90’s; INXS’ best early single, the fab Kiss The Dirt; and yet another 1976 disco remix from Tina Charles, which pretty much pushed me into overload saturation for the once-loved disco chart-topper, and I’ve yet to get back to it in the same way.

9th September 1986

3 weeks on top for Human, as my top 10 goes mad, with a massive leap for Killing Joke, far and away their biggest track for me, Adorations at 5, and INXS get a first top 10 with the fab Kiss The Dirt, up a whopping 64 places to 6. The Communards become the 3rd act to get a big hit out of Dont Leave Me This Way at 8, and highest new entry is the title track from Madonna’s fab True Blue album, in at 9.

Big climbs for Frankie, their 5th top 20, Bon Jovi get the first of a few top 20’s, novelty Holiday Rap enters at 16 for some European rapping, Cameo go top 30, and Five Star’s best and most charming record is in at 29, Rain Or Shine. Run DMC rock-et into the 40 helped by that fab video, and Farley takes House into the 40 too. The Ramones are back with some crummy stuff 8 years into their chart career, Amazulu cover Bobby Bloom, Pete Wylie is into diamonds, Elvis Costello makes it 9 years of chart success, Cyndi Lauper pops in with True Colors, not one of my faves of hers if I’m honest, Dead Or Alive make it 2 years and running, Falco makes it a hat trick of hits, and XTC are into grass, presumably having given up on making plans for Nigel after 7 years of trying.

16th September 1986

It’s 4 weeks on top for Human, as Bon Jovi get a first top 5 along with INXS. Run DMC and Aerosmith have a big climb for a first top 10, while Cameo make it a second with Word Up. Big climbs into the 20 for Psychedelic Furs & Five Star, and highest new entry is one-hit wonders Timex Social Club with the great Rumors. Dead Or Alive keep the top 40 run going strong, and Michael MacDonald takes Sweet Freedom into the 40, Chairmen Of The Board do the same for the first time since Finder’s Keepers in 1973, Pete Wylie adds to his occasional top 40 forays, Paul Simon makes his list longer, and Amazulu keep ’em coming.

UB40 keep the 6-year-run strong as they enter with All I Want To Do, and The Bangles come back strongly walking like an Egyptian. Meat Loaf pairs with Parr for a spot of mercenary chart attacking, Big Country, Talking Heads and Ultravox have minor returns, and Queen’s Highlander anthem Who wants To Live Forever sneaks in quietly.

23rd September 1986

It’s 5 weeks on top for Human, on track to be my biggest record of 1986, and Five Star get into the top 5 with the lovely Rain Or Shine. Eurythmics get their almost obligatory top 10 in my charts, they rarely fail to make it, and Timex Social Club leap up to 10 for the first and last time with a top 10 track. Outside the top 10 things are very volatile with big drops, big climbers and loads of new entries:

Dead Or Alive continue the run of top 20’s, Paul Simon leaps Al up to 13, for his highest placing in 13 years, House hits my top 20 with the Jackmaster, OMD sneak another top 20, and highest new entry at 20 is a comeback for The Monkees, or rather 2 of them with vocals from Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, and the first Monkees tracks to chart in 6 years, but actually the first new stuff ever to make my charts – as all their previous chart-toppers were reissues of stuff I adored before I began charting in 1968. They most-recently charted with a Paul Weller/Noel Gallagher song in 2017, their best stuff since their heyday 50 years earlier.

Big climbers into the 40 for Meatloaf, Big Country, Falco, Ultravox and The Bangles, all returning from previous hits, while the 20-year-old That’ll Be The Day brings Buddy Holly back into my charts – a semi-regular event over the decades which is pretty good considering they all date from the year I was born or earlier, being as he died around my first birthday. Others extending the runs of hits: Elton John (15 years), Billy Idol (8 years), Billy Joel (11 years), Ashford & Simpson (18 years as writers). Notable newies from Black, with the gorgeous Wonderful Life, Pet Shop Boys entering relatively low with Suburbia, following on from 2 chart-toppers & a top 10 – the B side was equally as good (Paninaro) and should have been the next single instead, but in those days B sides were ineligible for my charts or else it would certainly have topped my chart.

30th September 1986

It’s 6 weeks on top for Human, their longest run at 1, as Big Supreme get a well-deserved top 10 placing in the absence of an actual chart placing in the real world, and The Police try a comeback which goes horribly acrimoniously leaving only the new version of their 1980 number one in at 8 – they really did mean it when they said don’t stand so close to me. Dead Or Alive get a full-set of top 10’s since You spin me Round.

Critics who claimed every Quo song sounded the same (they don’t) had no response to their cover of In The Army Now, sounding nothing like Quo and fab, in at 18. Pet Shop Boys make it 4 top 20’s in a row as Suburbia rockets up to 17, and Elton is still leaping into the 20 15 years on. The Pretenders have an Avengers-themed 60’s moment with the great Don’t Get Me Wrong in at 30, while lower end hits continue to enter for Loose Ends, Julian Cope and his best post-Teardrops Explode single, Howard Jones, Marti Webb, 15 years of Rod Stewart, Paul Young, The Housemartins, and New Order.

My 1994 Charts – October

2nd October 1994

4 weeks at 1 for mad Pet Shop Boys, holding off a new threat from Corona’s Rhythm Of The Night at 2, then a bunch of girl singers dominate the top 10 except for East 17, Steam-ing up to 7, and Pato Banton Baby Come Back-iing at 9, with the wondrous Saint Etienne huggin my soul at 10, keeping up their top 10 run. Look at 2 Unlimited up 58 places with No-one! No, I don’t remember it either – but I obviously liked it. Madonna I do remember even if she’s only up 27 places to 21. Shhh don’t give away that secret! Elton’s Circle Of Life, of course, everyone knows, up 30 to 29, showing chart positions don’t matter if you’re in a Disney film, new generations pick up on it.

Bon Jovi and The Rolling Stones bring some rock into the 40, but highest new entry is the man from Orange Juice and his very classic A Girl Like You: Edwyn Collins. This is another case of, eh?! It took another 6 months to start charting worldwide (and in the UK for it to be a hit), but I loved it the minute I heard it, so justice was eventually done. Whigfield makes my top 40, too – I didn’t recall liking it that much, much it hadn’t started to grate yet obviously. Jamiroquai enters his Space Cowboy phase at 65, and Gloria Estefan is well into her disco retro phase as she covers Vicki Sue Robinson’s Turn The Beat Around. Chuck in a model (Naomi), TV kids show duo (PJ & Duncan aka Ant n Dec), 2 soul divas battling it (Kym and Jocelyn) and two rock greats Neil Young (just vacating my 2014 number one slot after 42 years of waiting) and INXS (brilliant live band), and that completes the chart report.

9th October 1994

It’s a new number one for Corona and the great dance track Rhythm Of The Night, as recently covered by Bastille. I’ll stick with the original myself, it’s fab. Big leap for Bon Jovi to 4, and their signature ballad Always – not my favourite Bon Jovi record by any means these days, but it seemed good enough at the time. Elton also circles around the top 10, giving him 23 years of regular top 10’s, while 2 Unlimited grab a final top 10 hit, I really must youtube it now!

Highest of only 4 new entries is Ace Of Base at 19, and a Happy Nation applauds their 5th top 20 entry. Aerosmith are back in with Crazy, as it starts to take hold at 26, Heavy D & The Boyz make the 40 with This Is Your Night, as do INXS, Kym & Jocelyn covering ZZ Top, PJ & Duncan, and new at 40 The Pretenders keep the hits coming 15 years on, 977 apparently, though I suspect it’s a few less than that. Sonic Youth are Superstars at 54 covering The Carpenters classic in a fab distorted morose indie-style, and Counting Crows meet the Rain King at 73, for a quiet chart week.

16th October 1994

2 weeks for Corona fizzing on top, as Edie Brickell and Barry White peak at 2, Good Times indeed for a fab soulful ballad. Elton John goes in Circles Of Life at 5, the latest in a very long list of top 5 singles, and ditto for Madonna in the top 10 as Secret hits 8. INXS’ terrific The Strangest Party shoots up to 12, and really should have been a big hit, instead their career declined steeply and unfairly, not quite fitting into Britpop. Aerosmith, Edwyn Collins and Snap all return to the top 20 with new stuff, as the chart suddenly wakes up with a deluge of new entries.

Highest, in at 22, Sparks enjoy one of their periodic comebacks, 20 years on from This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us, they ponder When Do I Get To Sing ‘My Way’? Right now, it’s Moroder-dance-era-styled fab. Massive Attack enter Sly-ly at 28, just ahead of a charity version of Marvin Gaye’s classic What’s Going On? Let Loose follow up a big pop hit with a decent forgotten pop hit, but not at Seventeen, at 31. Crash Test Dummies bounce back at 37 berating God for shuffling his feet a bit, Pink Floyd are back for the final time (barring 2014 sessions from 1994) and Keep Trackin’ at 50, 15 years after hitting number one with a brick.

China Black following up terrific number one Searching, with terrific melodic follow-up Stars at 51, Oasis sing about ciggies and booze in a T.Rex Get-It-On vibe at 60, how quaint holding up nicotine and drink as alternative solutions to having to work for a living. OK everyone, let’s quit our jobs and get pissed and see how long society lasts! As a record, it’s nowhere near as good as either Get It On, or predecessor Live Together. Over-rated much. The Manics suffer at 69, Aaliyah is still a minor but slides in at 71, and if there ever was a record that annoyed me more than Ciggies n Booze it’s Zombie, in at 74. The gorgeousness of Linger is replaced by repeated harpy calls, a record that with the passage of time only sounds worse. Ouch!

23rd October 1994:

The charts go insane suddenly, massive leaps, massive new entries, and massive drops under the pressure of 18 new entries, and it’s all great stuff too! Up 50 places from 51 to 1, one of the biggest climbs to the top ever, it’s China Black getting their second chart-topper of the year, the lovely entirely youtube absent Stars, overshadowing Sparks big climb to 3, their biggest hit since 1979. Highest new entry is at 5, and it’s Abba with Just Like That. No, not a Tommy Cooper tribute record, it’s one of the final recordings by Abba only available in the middle of a single track compilation of bits & pieces which were released as part of a box set of rare stuff in 1994. Gemini (the Abba boys proteges after Abba) had already released a version, but the original Abba short version is a cut above, and should have been a single.

New Order’s classic True Faith from 1987 is remixed and still corking, back in at 10, just behind R Kelly and one of his best records, vibing swiftly along entering at 7. Not to be outdone Tom Jones re-invents himself again with the storming If I Only Knew in at 13. Massive Attack, Crash test Dummies and (somehow!) PJ & Duncan/Ant n Dec get into the 20, before some more new entries: Elastica’s terrific Connection is at 30, Amy Grant is back 3 years on from Baby Baby, Say You’ll Be Mine, she says at 33, while Donna Summer’s got a melody of love at 37, 18 years after groaning her way into my charts.

At 38, the Crosby Stills & Nash classic, Teach Your Children, never charted before, pops in courtesy of a version re-recorded by the band along with some country artists (including Alison Krauss) for an AIDS benefit album. Up to 21 the other charity record is for Rwanda and features a wealth of urban and stars of the time, and it’s pretty good. Status Quo are in my current chart with new material (Nov 2014) and 20 years ago they were in at 39 with Sherri Don’t Fail Me Now. 40 years ago they were already 2 years into their chart career with me. No, they don’t all sound the same.

Outside the top 40: Clapton’s back with a ballad at 44, it ain’t no Layla! The Beautiful South, Sting, Janet Jackson all keep the run of hits going while Sheryl Crow debuts her biggie All I Wanna Do at 75. To rub it in, that’s one place lower than Shampoo! Ah, well, it WAS a very busy chart!

30th October 1994

2 weeks on top for China Black, and a new entry at 2 for LWS and GOSP, an obscure rave non-hit with a 30‘s blues vibe, that pushed my buttons oddly – I don’t recall going raving in 1994! Up to 3, higher second-time round, it’s True Faith for New Order. Edwyn Collins drops 2 (for now) but his biggest hit since Orange Juice went top 10 with Rip It Up in 1993 will be back in 1995. Music Relief take What’s Going On into the top 10, following Cyndi Lauper’s version, and preceding Marvin Gaye’s original. Tom Jones gets a span of top 10 hits of exactly 26 years, I Only I Knew that in 1968 when I started charting!

Aerosmith hit a new peak of 11, INXS grab another top 10, Eric Clapton leaps to 16, and Terry Hall re-enters with his own (previous number one) cover version of his Lightning Seeds co-write/sing, at 13 – well it all makes Sense to me! Terrorvision bolt in, screaming Alice, What’s The Matter! I loved Terrorvision consistently, great fun. Sting and Pink Floyd bring some veteran rock into the 40, albeit both mellow, just like Clapton, while Eternal manage to break into the 30 – Oh Baby I don’t know why!

Sheryl Crow rockets to 33, a good dance pop track from The Real McCoy give me another night at 37, Seal bounces back in again with a newborn friend, and Rozalla adds to her diminishing peaking list of follow-ups to Everybody’s Free, with You Never Love The Same Way Twice at 47. Well, I try not to at any rate, can’t speak for Rozalla. REM have some Bang and Blame at 58, Brand New Heavies spend some time at 59, while interesting indie band Grant Lee Buffalo sneak in at 63 with some Mockingbirds, pipping Echobelly, Chris Rea and Foreigner (both School of 1978), and Paul Weller (School of 1977).

6th August 1989

3 weeks for Gloria, a tad OTT I think, Macca should have been at 1 instead. Apart from Macca, though it’s divas and gals hogging the top 5 as Liza with a Z loses her mind up 45 places to 5, courtesy of Chris n Neil – it’s essentially a PSB cover with Liza singing on top. Fab. Alice Cooper snakes his way into the 10 for the first time in 16 years, and it’s Poison. Pure poison. Pure. Lightning Seeds at 8, breaking into the 10 for the first time, and most definitely not the last time.

Martika breaks into the 20, Bros get only a second Top 20 hit, and Cyndi Lauper gets a full 5 years of top 20 hits. Stevie Nicks has a long way to go up to 22, but does it easily, while Transvision Vamp keep the top 40 hits on a landslide. There’s a batch of great new entries though to liven up the charts, headed by Eurythmics getting a 10th anniversary (as The Tourists) Revival at 35 (not the song though, that’s new). Elton John proves he has Healing Hands as the best record he’s done in 6 years shoots in at 36, to UK singles chart indifference. For a year at least, till the gospel marvel of it got a bit more exposure as a double A side number one with Sacrifice.

Neneh Cherry has Kisses On The Wind at 39, The Four Tops shine on at 45 (not the famous song, it’s a new one) for 20 years of chart entries, and Jon Bon Jovi begs us to lay our hands on him. I had the opportunity nearly a decade later but managed to restrain myself. Dolly Parton has just released a great version of the song, appropriately enough. Betty Boo raps Hey DJ to the Beatmasters, and starts a brief run of good pop singles, and makes Betty Boop famous again as copyright makes her change her name, ooh any day now.

Big debut news though is the KLF, not yet in epic mode, but very much in piss-take mode following The Timelords chart-topper, with the fabulous Kylie Said To Jason. You know you’ve created a great parody record when it’s better than the targets (Kylie and Jason’s current singles) on two levels, as parody, or as borrowing the sound of SAW to make the point yet still make a great pop record. Queen, meanwhile, are a bit invisible at 58 compared to the big comeback singalong thumping rock ballad charm of Cher’s If I Could Turn Back Time, for a sweet 18 years of solo hits. Mustn’t forget Malcolm McLaren’s quirky Shirt Jumping either at 70. Phew! Busy chart.

In the real world: Fun Coastal walk with Cathy and Chris from work to Dancing Ledge. Pre-holiday prep anxieties, but all booked. Ageist quips flying at work, with lovely Cathy, a whole decade older than me, on the receiving end. I was on the receiving end of an eraser, quite rightly. Banter! Mansfield friends of parents holiday camping in the garden at home, though Pat my age really, and a College friend rang with news of breast cancer treatment which made me feel bad at not getting in touch, as I had no idea. She’s fine now, very very happily.

13th August 1989

An amazingly overlong run at 1 for Gloria keeps Liza at 2. Awwww! Losing My Mind over that one. A quiet week at the top lets Martika, Bobby Brown and Aswad get their 1st, 2nd and third Top 10’s respectively. Elton leaps to 14, something’s Jumpin’ even more – from 70 to 16 it’s Malcolm McLaren’s model-cool dance track. Transvision Vamp and Neneh Cherry both get their 3rd Top 20 hit, meanwhile, as some Classics enter just below, highest at 26 being Black Box, the Italian house classic (with model-fronting Loleatta Holloway Love Sensation-sampling brilliant Ride On Time). Still a classic.

Even better, the Beatles-inspired epic Sowing The Seeds Of Love announces Tears For Fears 7th year of fantastic hits. Pure 1967 retro video and All You Need Is Love styled chorus, and juuuuust amazing. Just to keep up the new singles, Sydney Youngblood debuts at 34 with the fab If Only I Could, a great song, snuggling in just behind Cher and Bon Jovi into the 40. Oh but that’s not all! Madonna’s 3rd single off Like A Prayer is at 39, the sweet and pretty Cherish. Sir Cliff is also back with a Stock-Aitken-Waterman biggie, the otherwise not bad I Just Don’t Have The Heart.

Minor entries for Spandau, Paula Abdul, Art Of Noise, REM, Jody watley, Debbie Gibson and another fairly bland SAW cover (Mick Jackson’s Blame It On The Boogie) for Big Fun.

20th August 1989

A new number one, and it’s Elton’s fabulous Healing Hands. I have to admit I was completely baffled how this one managed to flop big time in the UK in 1989. His 7th number one in my chart, about as many in the USA, and yet to get a UK chart-topper on his own. Bizarre. Poor ol’ Liza was the bridesmaid again at 2. Highest new entry at 4, a 1966 classic from hippie Donovan, Sunshine Superman, probably his best record and pop psychedelia royalty giving him a belated second Top 20 hit 20 years on.

Tears For Fears sow seeds at 5, Black Box ride it to 8, and it’s a Mental new entry at 12 for some Manic MC’s. Crazy. Bon Jovi have their biggest hit in 3 years, and Rocky Horror classic The Time Warp transports in at 19 for Damian. Party classic or what?! Really drives me insa-a-a-a-ane, as Jameela might say. Meanwhile Debbie Gibson inexplicably rockets to 23, as the KLF explicably shoot up to 24. New: Donna Summer’s 3rd SAW hit of the year, Richard Marx debuts with the pleasant Right Here Waiting, The Cure bounce back with Love Song 9 years into the run of great singles, and Janet Jackson’s big comeback single isn’t Missed that much at a lowly 69.

I noted the UK singles charts had some good stuff in, but little classic, in my whinge-book, while my boss was trying to find me a permanent job at work, but it meant having to do horticulture courses. Radio One Roadshow with Simon Mayo at the Bournemouth Pier at lunchtime. Saw the Batman movie, very dark, too much for my tastes really, as it made me depressed. Built a new fish pond, parents not impressed.

27th August 1989

2 weeks for Elton on top, KLF up to 8 for their first Top 10 under that name (and 2nd under various names), while Madonna makes it 3 in a row in the 10. Lisa Stansfield reverses back up to a new peak of 16, and ditto Dion at 20. Queen are slightly less invisible at 26, while Alyson Williams dances up to 34.

One of Liza’s album track covers pops in as a cover from Hazell Dean at 57 – the fab Love Pains, originally an Yvonne Elliman goodie that I never actually got to hear. Partyman for Prince, another Batman song, enters at 60, and Ziggy Marley continues in the tradition of his dad, and pops in at 62 with Look Who’s Dancing.

ON TV pissed myself laughing at Josie Lawrence on Who’s Line Is It Anyway? Enjoyed US sitcom Sledge Hammer.
