My June 1988 Charts

5th June 1988

It’s a first week on top for Circle In The Sand, Belinda Carlisle’s first chart-topper, holding off a big climb from KLF aka The Timelords “How To get A Number One Record” as the subsequent book claimed. Half of them had been there before in the top 10 with Brilliant. Eurythmics get another top 10, for the 6th year in succession, Sam Brown has a massive climb into the 20 for Stop, Brass Construction outperform the original’s chart position by 13 places, Desireless get a nice climb into the 40, and the highest new entry is another duet between Chrissie Hynde & UB40, a cover of Dusty Springfield’s Dusty In Memphis track, Breakfast In Bed, which should have been a single in 1969, and the cover version being much better than their version of I Got You Babe.

Julian Clary treats Leader Of The Pack with affectionate humour, under his then stage-pseudonym, and on his way to stand-up top-billing, always good with his quick-wit and innuendo, give or take the odd political fist-up to interrupt his ascendence. Bros owe me nothing, apparently, new in at 59 – though I’d argue they owe me thanks for buying one of their later better singles once the fanclub evaporated. At 65, Chubby Checker is back with the rapping Fat Boys, with a souped-up The Twist, which had always been less popular than Let’s Twist Again in the UK. It did chart as the other side of Let’s twist Again, though, for me in 1975 on reissue, while a cover version of Let’s Twist Again topped my chart thanks to a DJ. A childhood fave song, that one.

Tiffany’s back with another 60’s cover – this time The Beatles I Saw Her Standing There, which was never a UK single but which charted in 1981 in the wake of John Lennon’s murder as a live version with Elton John, for John Lennon’s last public concert while guesting with Elton after losing a bet that Whatever Gets You Thru The Night wouldn’t top the US charts. Sabrina brings some Eurocheese action, Matt Bianco pop in as Basia taunts her ex-band a little bit higher, Five Star have another weekend, and Jacko returns with two more mentions for future singles off Bad.

12th July 1988

It’s 2 weeks on top for Belinda as The Timelords Glamrock the Tardis up to 2, and Rose Royce is back with a super-double-A-side single reissue of their 1977/1979 hits – Is It Love You’re After is the real A side though, following on from the S-Express sample, and is a top hit again second time around. Erasure bound into the 10 with Chains Of Love, very popular pastime in some quarters, as does Alexander O’Neal still on an r’n’b roll, and Maxi Priest gives Cat Stevens his first top 10 song since err Wild World in 1970.

George Michael is back with yet another Faith track, this time it’s a Jam & Lewis remix of Monkey, which is way better than the album version, straight in at 14, giving both George & Jam & Lewis 2 in the 20. Newly-solo Morrissey is back with possibly his best solo single, Everyday Is Like Sunday, in at 16, and The Pasadenas debut with the fab 70’s-Philly-referencing Tribute at 17. The Communards return with There’s More To Love, Tracey Chapman drives in with her evergreen fast car, The Silencers get another flop single in my chart, with Painted Moon, and Boy George gets all political about Clause 28 which banned mentioning the “Gay” word to children, Thatcher preferring to pretend there’s no such thing.

George Harrison insists that This Is Love, and extends his solo run to 18 years, Bob’s boy Ziggy Marley debuts with Tomorrow People, sounding not entirely unlike his late father, 60’s oldie Do You Love Me enters for The Contours thanks to Dirty Dancing, I think, though it was more familiar to me via UK covers up to this point. Loose Ends return with what is more Tail-Ends as far as their career is concerned, sadly, and finally Sisters Of Mercy sneak in with Lucretia My Reflection – quite modest by their recent standards, but expect it to go up.

19th July 1988

It’s three weeks on top for Circle In The Sand, suddenly under threat from Erasure up to 2 with Chains Of Love, their highest since topping with Sometimes in 1986, Eurythmics getting a second top 3 of the year with You Have Placed A Chill, and highest new entry at 4 being Phil Collins’ number 2 from 1981, the awesome In The Air Tonight undergoing a revamp that didn’t actually ruin it. George Michael goes top 10 with a Monkey on his back, Sade get a big top 10 with Paradise, their first in a while, Morrissey gets his first solo top 10, and Mica Paris her first too, My One Temptation for a busy week at the top end. One of them will knock Belinda off the perch next week.

Sisters Of Mercy get another huge leap, with Lucretia My Reflection up 50 places to 24, along with a batch of top 40 climbers from The Fat Boys & Chubby Checker, Bros, Sabrina, George Harrison, Matt Bianco, Boy George, and if you can find a genre connection there between them all you must be delusional! smile.gif In a quiet week for new entries veterans The Moody Blues return with I Know You’re Out There Somewhere, I knew them back when I was a kiddie, T’Pau keep the singles coming I Will Be With You, Tracie Spencer’s Symptoms Of True Love returns, Springsteen is still Tougher Than The Rest 13 years on, a-ha have The Blood That Moves The Body, and Dee Lewis pops in briefly with Best Of My Love, sister of the fab Linda Lewis, and vocalist with the likes of Jamiroquai in the 90’s.

26th June 1988

It’s a first week on top for Phil Collins, with the slight reworking of his 1981 number 2 classic In The Air Tonight – the remix isn’t as good as the original, let’s be clear on that, but it’s compensation for being denied first-time round. In the interim Genesis topped my chart with Mama in 1983, both of them classically haunting rhythmically. That denies a topper for Maxi Priest’s fab cover of Wild World at 2, while new into the top 10 go The Pasadenas’ early 70’s-sounding Tribute, UB40 & Chrissie Hynde getting another top 10 together with a much better cover version, this time the fab Dusty In Memphis album track, and The Communards grab another to add to their growing list with There’s More To Love.

T’Pau climb 30 places, Springsteen does even better up to 32, and Gloria Estefan enters at 36 with Anything For You, the track that boosted her into the big league for the next few years as Miami Sound Machine becomes the supporting name rather than the focus – nothing had changed though, her only-ever boyfriend and husband Emilio was and is still the guiding force behind her career and records. 1971 Who classic Won’t Get Fooled Again debuts (I didn’t know it at the time, it wasn’t played in Singapore) at 42, Midnight Oil follow-up Beds Are Burning with Dead Heart, and Salt’n’Pepa debut with the much-loved Push It, bringing female rap an actual focal point with the band – Salt, Pepa & Spinderella aka ‘n’. I made that last bit up.

Steve Winwood returns with a huge US hit, Roll With It, 20-odd years into his career and giving us that classic starter-soup question “Roll with it?”. I made that bit up too. INXS bring yet another fab track from the brilliant Kick album into the chart – Never Tear Us Apart, remixed and covered in later decades by the likes of Paloma Faith. Glen Medeiros pops in with his UK chart-topper, I still remain mystified by it’s popularity 30 years later, the same week he had his 20th birthday. 50 now, hard to believe, but Happy Birthday Glen! Hothouse Flowers follow-up, Joy Division oldie Atmosphere sneaks in, and rather lowly at 74, Transvision Vamp enter with another pop goodie, I Want Your Love.

My December 1986 Charts

2nd December 1986

2 weeks on top for Erasure, as Madonna’s True Blue album delivers the highest new entry at 6 with the fab Open Your Heart. The even-fabber La Isla Bonita is in my playlist as ineligible for my singles-only listings. She also replaces one of her own songs in the top 10 as Nick Kamen drops, and keeps her hot streak of top 10’s going. Bucks Fizz add to their long-list of top 10’s with a warm Christmassy ballad – or at least a cocoa-advert-ey ballad. Oran ‘Juice’ Jones gets another big leap into the 20, and big top 40 leapers include Cameo, Gregory Abbott, Genesis and Cliff & Elton. The late Jackie Wilson is reinvented in plasticine video form and makes fifties biggie Reet Petite about to become the oldest record to top the UK charts – but not mine.

Billy Ocean is big in 1986, so why not remix his first hit from 1976? In at 57, and the Motown-flavoured original still sounds better than most of his 80’s hits these days. Daryl Hall keeps the solo entries coming, also from the Class of ’76 debuts, while George Benson shivers a bit (Winter is here!) and a run of 11 chart years since Supership. Quo can beat that – 1973 they debuted in my charts, and now have 2 in the listings, how greedy! Of course Macca beats the lot of ’em, being as he debuted with The Beatles on top of my first retro charts in 1968 with Hey Jude, and is back with another Press To Play track.

9th December 1986

It’s 3 weeks on top for Erasure as Madonna threatens her 3rd chart-topper in a row at 2, and the chart starts to feel a little festive with The Housemartins leaping up to 13 with the Isleys cover, The Ronettes topping my oldies playlist (had I charted oldies in those days that means it would have been invading my top 75), and Chris De Burgh’s 3rd good single entering at 74, a perennial of course these days that never quite got the chart positions you might think. His other 2 good ones are High On Emotion and Don’t Pay The Ferryman.

Europe go top 5, that’ll please Brexiteers aiming for The Final Countdown, while Communards leap right into the top 10 from 32 with one of their very best tracks, So Cold The Night. Gregory Abbot & Jackie Wilson have good leaps into the 20, that’ll be the 3rd time Jackie has done that with oldies starting with Higher & Higher in 1969, I Get The Sweetest feeling in 1972, both of them going top 30 in 1975 as a double A, and now Reet Petite posthumously triggering the same 2 to come back and hit even higher peaks in 1987!!

Highest new entry is a-ha crying wolf, another winner from Morten & the lads yet to put a foot wrong, at 32, as Rod the Mod enters with In My Life at 35 the touching John Lennon Beatles song. As is always the case with Rod covers, bar Oh No Not My Baby and Ooh La La, it’s not as good as the original. Paul Simon’s good Boy In The Bubble is in at 45, giving him 17 years of chart success, 2 more than Rod, and 7 more than Elkie Brooks who returns with her last very good hit, No More The Fool at 62.

16th December 1986

It’s the hat-trick for Madonna, as Open Your Heart gives her 3 chart-toppers in a row, holding The Final Countdown at 2. Cameo get a 3rd top 10, Jackie Wilson ditto, and Genesis a 4th. Daryl Hall makes it solo top40 hits, and Human League does a turnabout and leaps into the 30 after looking perilously like it was heading for the lowest chart position of any track from them (ignoring reissues) since the EP in 1980 debuted and peaked outside the 40. Also Spirit Of ’80 debut acts The Gap Band return, as does chart-topping Dexy’s Midnight Runners now back with a TV theme tune, while 1980 chart-toppers The Pretenders are also back with the lovely Hymn To Her.

Bad Company return for the first time since the mid-70’s, minus vocalist Paul Rodgers, ex-Free lead singer, but some of the band still technically date back to 1970 Free-era, and Mott The Hoople 1972-era. Spitting Image return with a Xmas novelty song. Thankfully, no I don’t remember it either. I can’t imagine it’s worse than their appalling chart-topper. Quo are beside themsleves in the top 40, and Elkie Brooks keeps the 70’s blues rock vibe going just behind them. Meanwhile my oldies chart shows me obviously revisiting December 1971 reel-to-reel tapes, and opting for the rock tracks and ex-Godspell soul singers.

23rd December 1986

It’s straight in at 1 for recent Xmas classic Last Christmas, making it the 3rd xmas period in a row it had topped my chart – back in the day I was charting those not-so-old xmas faves year after year if they had made the UK charts at all (to qualify). Without that qualification my charts would have looked like the usual UK Xmas charts, chock full of the classic oldies. I did it first though, starting in Christmas 1974 and onwards, and yes the same songs that still chart. Shaky also charts for the second xmas in a row. Ahead of my time! That explains why I tend not to chart the same ones these days – been doing it for 44 years oops!

Eurythmics get another in a long line of top 10 singles, and Housemartins make it 2, as Jennifer Rush gets some recharting action in the UK singles chart, and thus mine too, a year on. Berlin come back with a good follow-up single that didn’t sell well in the real world, annoyingly, in at 28 and The Gap Band go top 30, and that Spitting Image Xmas song inexplicably climbs to 29. I’m guessing the video was amusing, as I still don’t recall it and can’t be bothered to youtube it.

Macca & The Pretenders keep the top 40’s coming, Paul McCartney making it 18 years and counting. Spoiler: he’s still making my charts 50 years on from Hey Jude. The Pointer Sisters return some 14 years on from first hearing of them (Yes We Can Can), Kool & The Gang keep the decade-long run of hits going blissfully unaware that House Music is about to end all that, Gary Moore is back again, ditto The Stranglers coming to a decade of charting, and James Brown makes his comeback last a bit longer. Not Sex Machine, but hey Get On Up…

30th December 1986

It’s the final chart of 1986 and Madonna is back up on top for a second week on top. Notably Shaky & Chris De Burgh’s christmas classics scraped into the 40 for me, and A Spaceman Came Travelling has peaked higher this christmas in 2018 in my charts than back in the day, while Merry Christmas Everyone was getting a second bite of christmas chart action in a row. Cameo reach a new career chart peak of 2 with Candy, and Gregoray Abbott gets his only moment in the top 10.

Elkie Brooks goes top 20 for the first time in 3 years, 9 years after her first time, Bad Company for the first time in 11 years with This Love, snuggling up to Is This Love, Alison Moyet’s climbing hit. To which the answer from those who hounded her off twitter in 2018 for asking people to be nice to women and listen and support their needs is a resounding “no”. Paul Simon makes it 2 top 20’s in a row for the first time in about 13 years, Elton & Cliff also add to their extensive run of top 20’s, 1971 and 1968 respectively, with a song no-one remembers but which was quite pleasant.

Iggy Pop gets his first ever top 40, 13 years later than one might have expected, but got there in the end. Highest new entry is Eric Clapton’s cover of his bandmate’s non-hit, Behind The Mask was big in my charts for Greg Philinganes, and Eric’s version was pedestrian to my ears, but fine to anyone who hadn’t heard the superior original. Latin Quarter return with a 3rd song, Barclay James Harvest adapt to the end of Prog Rock by charting in the 80’s after stiffing in the 70’s, Vesta Williams has a decent dance song, Go West don’t cover Cyndi, this song has an extra “u”, Lionel Richie tries a ballerina, presumably dancing on the ceiling, and Sheena pops in with a Christmas record no-one has ever heard, except those that have seen Santa Claus: The Movie. As I’ve not heard it in 32 years I can’t comment whether that is fair or not…until I just played it. So 80’s, so dreary. I liked Sheena. The only reason it charted!

My September 1986 Charts

2nd September 1986

It’s Human League on top for a second week, presiding over a Jam & Lewis top 2, and a big pop week for me: the week I got on Radio 1 on Mike Read’s Pop Quiz, backstage with The Real Thing, and the week I bought my first Now That’s What I Call Music which boosted tracks in my chart which were on it. Highest new entry is the brilliant 20th anniversary of Eleanor Rigby (the reason for the high chart position, Yellow Submarine is for completion purposes only by that time, though I loved it as a kid), the Fabs keeping up with the reissues.

Big climbs for Tina Turner, The Communards, The Psychedelic Furs, OMD and Cutting Crew into the 40, with big new tracks entering lower down: You Can Call Me Al, Paul Simon back with a biggie to signal classic Graceland; Chairmen Of The Board back with their first fab track in 13 years, having topped my chart in 1973; House arrives proper with Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk; Cameo do that much-covered future codpiece classic Word Up; Run DMC innovate a rap/rock combo with Aerosmith, and boost the 70’s rockers back into fashion in the US, and chart success at last in the UK setting up the rest of the decade and the 90’s; INXS’ best early single, the fab Kiss The Dirt; and yet another 1976 disco remix from Tina Charles, which pretty much pushed me into overload saturation for the once-loved disco chart-topper, and I’ve yet to get back to it in the same way.

9th September 1986

3 weeks on top for Human, as my top 10 goes mad, with a massive leap for Killing Joke, far and away their biggest track for me, Adorations at 5, and INXS get a first top 10 with the fab Kiss The Dirt, up a whopping 64 places to 6. The Communards become the 3rd act to get a big hit out of Dont Leave Me This Way at 8, and highest new entry is the title track from Madonna’s fab True Blue album, in at 9.

Big climbs for Frankie, their 5th top 20, Bon Jovi get the first of a few top 20’s, novelty Holiday Rap enters at 16 for some European rapping, Cameo go top 30, and Five Star’s best and most charming record is in at 29, Rain Or Shine. Run DMC rock-et into the 40 helped by that fab video, and Farley takes House into the 40 too. The Ramones are back with some crummy stuff 8 years into their chart career, Amazulu cover Bobby Bloom, Pete Wylie is into diamonds, Elvis Costello makes it 9 years of chart success, Cyndi Lauper pops in with True Colors, not one of my faves of hers if I’m honest, Dead Or Alive make it 2 years and running, Falco makes it a hat trick of hits, and XTC are into grass, presumably having given up on making plans for Nigel after 7 years of trying.

16th September 1986

It’s 4 weeks on top for Human, as Bon Jovi get a first top 5 along with INXS. Run DMC and Aerosmith have a big climb for a first top 10, while Cameo make it a second with Word Up. Big climbs into the 20 for Psychedelic Furs & Five Star, and highest new entry is one-hit wonders Timex Social Club with the great Rumors. Dead Or Alive keep the top 40 run going strong, and Michael MacDonald takes Sweet Freedom into the 40, Chairmen Of The Board do the same for the first time since Finder’s Keepers in 1973, Pete Wylie adds to his occasional top 40 forays, Paul Simon makes his list longer, and Amazulu keep ’em coming.

UB40 keep the 6-year-run strong as they enter with All I Want To Do, and The Bangles come back strongly walking like an Egyptian. Meat Loaf pairs with Parr for a spot of mercenary chart attacking, Big Country, Talking Heads and Ultravox have minor returns, and Queen’s Highlander anthem Who wants To Live Forever sneaks in quietly.

23rd September 1986

It’s 5 weeks on top for Human, on track to be my biggest record of 1986, and Five Star get into the top 5 with the lovely Rain Or Shine. Eurythmics get their almost obligatory top 10 in my charts, they rarely fail to make it, and Timex Social Club leap up to 10 for the first and last time with a top 10 track. Outside the top 10 things are very volatile with big drops, big climbers and loads of new entries:

Dead Or Alive continue the run of top 20’s, Paul Simon leaps Al up to 13, for his highest placing in 13 years, House hits my top 20 with the Jackmaster, OMD sneak another top 20, and highest new entry at 20 is a comeback for The Monkees, or rather 2 of them with vocals from Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, and the first Monkees tracks to chart in 6 years, but actually the first new stuff ever to make my charts – as all their previous chart-toppers were reissues of stuff I adored before I began charting in 1968. They most-recently charted with a Paul Weller/Noel Gallagher song in 2017, their best stuff since their heyday 50 years earlier.

Big climbers into the 40 for Meatloaf, Big Country, Falco, Ultravox and The Bangles, all returning from previous hits, while the 20-year-old That’ll Be The Day brings Buddy Holly back into my charts – a semi-regular event over the decades which is pretty good considering they all date from the year I was born or earlier, being as he died around my first birthday. Others extending the runs of hits: Elton John (15 years), Billy Idol (8 years), Billy Joel (11 years), Ashford & Simpson (18 years as writers). Notable newies from Black, with the gorgeous Wonderful Life, Pet Shop Boys entering relatively low with Suburbia, following on from 2 chart-toppers & a top 10 – the B side was equally as good (Paninaro) and should have been the next single instead, but in those days B sides were ineligible for my charts or else it would certainly have topped my chart.

30th September 1986

It’s 6 weeks on top for Human, their longest run at 1, as Big Supreme get a well-deserved top 10 placing in the absence of an actual chart placing in the real world, and The Police try a comeback which goes horribly acrimoniously leaving only the new version of their 1980 number one in at 8 – they really did mean it when they said don’t stand so close to me. Dead Or Alive get a full-set of top 10’s since You spin me Round.

Critics who claimed every Quo song sounded the same (they don’t) had no response to their cover of In The Army Now, sounding nothing like Quo and fab, in at 18. Pet Shop Boys make it 4 top 20’s in a row as Suburbia rockets up to 17, and Elton is still leaping into the 20 15 years on. The Pretenders have an Avengers-themed 60’s moment with the great Don’t Get Me Wrong in at 30, while lower end hits continue to enter for Loose Ends, Julian Cope and his best post-Teardrops Explode single, Howard Jones, Marti Webb, 15 years of Rod Stewart, Paul Young, The Housemartins, and New Order.
