My Retro September 1970 Charts

Our kitchen 1970 Singapore

5th September 1970

It’s 2 weeks on top for The Partridge Family as the B side shoots up to 20, giving David Cassidy two top 20’s as a song he will take to the UK number one enters at 6, a gorgeous version by Dusty Springfield which I love almost as much as the Cassidy version, and both versions more than the Young Rascals version which peaked at 5 in my 1967 retro charts. It’s a flawless song. Highest new entry is the biggest one yet by The Jackson 5, I’ll Be There at 2, their first ballad, and like I Think I Love You a song I associate hugely with tropical Singapore – only this one co-incidentally also popped up while I was wandering round Sentosa island on my only return visit in 1995. They must have played it just for me!

Dusty also returns with a B side, a cover of Classics IV’s Spooky which peaked at 16 in the ’67 retro charts, Dusty currently twice that at 32. Todd Rundgren is back, this time with a solo track after his band version of Hello It’s Me, We Gotta Get You A Woman is fab and in at 53, as The Chi-Lites enter with their original version of the soundalike hit version entering the US charts by Otis Leaville – his is good, but it’s the same label as Eugene Record’s, so obviously he had a hand in it, but the production isn’t as polished and the vocals not as good. Horace Faith debuts with a reggae version of the 1969 retro hit for Sonny Charles & The Checkmates’ Black Pearl, while CCR debut with a new album track version of Marvin Gaye’s chart-topping Grapevine 6 years ahead of it’s UK single release – it made my top 30 in 1976.

12th September 1970

It’s a first week on top for The Jackson 5, as we get a first real look at the wonder that is young Michael Jackson’s flawless ability to sing and convey emotion on I’ll Be There – not that his brothers do a bad job, they don’t and Jermaine does a great job too, but Michael is in a league of his own. For useful comparison try the Mariah Carey version (amazing vocal range, zero ability to emote, it’s all about showing off not feeling). If you want a lesson in how to sing, look no further than Dusty Springfield, she LIVED the words and music and arranged them for maximum effect, still the greatest British female vocalist of all-time for me, it’s not even close. Co-incidentally Dusty is up to 3 with her brilliant version of How Can I Be Sure, 24 with her version of Spooky, and in at 4 with her version of Burt Bacharach’s A House Is Not A Home….

…which you won’t have ever heard, on the grounds that it’s never been released, but aired this week 50 years ago on a US TV special. There was a previous TV only version Dusty did in 1968, but in a lesson that she never gave the same performance twice, check this one out, which I first caught in Centre Stage, a Gran Canaria bar which specialises in musicals clips and gay icons – it was a “battle” between clips of Cilla & Dusty, and had this clip, and I’ve pretty much seen it once or twice a year in there for the last 17 years, and never fails to move me. I’m going to gush now, and say this is the greatest unreleased performance from TV, and the definitive version of this great song, including the Glee version which was fab, and the marvellous Dionne Warwick.

Other new stuff includes some Worldwide hits in the absence of other significant big US/UK chart entries, though we have The Hollies at 47 with the fab Gasoline Alley Bred a Greenaway/Cook/Macauley song to join Blue Mink’s songwriting credentials, David Gates gives Bread a second great ballad, It Don’t Matter To Me at 49, and not a hit but still fab and new out, Etta James belting it out on Losers Weepers at 62, almost a decade since her classic At Last, and backed by singers including Minnie Ripperton who I’ve credited just because she deserves it and for no other reason. A hit in Europe and Australasia, and inexplicably not in the UK, Wight Is Wight for Sandie Shaw enters at 67, Neil Young’s After The Goldrush album is out and the lead track debuts 4 years ahead of the wonderful Prelude cover, Young-Holt Unlimited grab another tasty Easy Listening instrumental, Tyrone Davis enters with another slab of soul, and finally top 10 in New Zealand Suzanne (no idea either) enters with her version of Yesterday When I Was Young, the English language version of a Charles Aznavour French hit song of the early 60’s that had been a US country hit for Roy Clark. And because I like circular commentary, Dusty recorded it in 1972, probably her last significant single release until Disco Dusty in 1979, and Baby Blue.

19th September 1970

It’s Dusty presiding at 1 & 2 and also 17 in a chart where I genuinely expected all of the records from 1 to 14 to top my chart at some stage, had they all not been competing with each other, given so many of them topped my original charts or have hit the top in the years since. Except Dusty was severely under-appreciated and keeps herself off the top with a bit of bad timing, as the first-ever unavailable track, but a live performance of note of a Bacharach song gives Dusty a 3rd Retro chart-topper – and had I compiled them starting in 1963 there would have been at least another 3. Maybe I’ll do them for the 60th anniversary…

Bacharach has of course topped as songwriter and/or producer already – in 1969 with Bobbie Gentry, 1970 with Carpenters, and again oodles from 1963 to 1966, from whence the original version of Make It Easy On Yourself came, in the cover by The Walker Brothers. Dionne warwick was robbed of the original version as she was a session singer testing the song for other acts (until Bacharach realised she was so good she should be the primary artist for his material) – and in 1970 she cut a live version of her original demo, which charts at 58. Likewise, as primary fanboy songwriter Jimmy Webb gifted most of his best stuff to Glen Campbell you’d have thought MacArthur Park was a no-brainer for Glen’s fabulous singing range – but Richard Harris got it. Belatedly on his latest album dropping last week, it now charts as an album track.

Talking of Glen, The Partridge Family make a Glen Campbell sandwich of It’s Only Make Believe as it goes back up, Somebody Wants To Love You becomes a 2nd top 10 for the TV band, and I Think I Love You is forced down by the Dusty dominance, including Dusty’s version of How Can I Be Sure which I guarantee will top my 1972 retro charts, as it did in my current charts when David Cassidy died a few years ago. The Carpenters also make it 2 in the 20 as album track Crescent Moon continues to impress.

Highest new entry at 21 is future single, current album track from The Jackson 5’s third (!!) album, Mama’s Pearl which I loved in mid-1971 when I caught an American top 10 rundown on a radio station in Singapore, they had two tracks featured, I loved them both. In at 30 is another album track, and future single in edited form, from Curtis Mayfield dropping his debut solo album away from The Impressions, which contains a 9-minute version of his classic Move On Up. I’ve had to chart that version on the basis that the single edit didn’t exist for a few months!

Todd Rundgren, Bread and The Delfonics all return to the top 40 with new tracks, as Gamble & Huff outdo themselves with another new entry, for classic doo-wop act Little Anthony & The Imperials – a very Delfonics-sounding production on Help me Find A Way – and a second chart entry for the band as Don’t Tie Me Down hit 24 in 1967, though they would have charted years earlier with Goin’ Out Of My Head in 1964, and also topped my chart for weeks in the 50’s with Tears On My Pillow, which I’ve always loved. The Temptations have a new social-conscience funk single out, and both sides are fab, albeit little-known, and classy. Nitty Gritty Dirt band return with a country cover of Mr Bojangles, already a chart hit here for Jerry Jeff Walker in 1969, and their third entry with the future US smash hit.

Buddy Miles gets a second, James Brown a 4th, Quiksilver Messenger Service a debut, and finally it’s also a debut for New York band Mardi Gras (they drop the “The” in 1972 when they get a UK hit with the best cover of Too Busy Thinking Bout My Baby) who get a surprise French chart-topper this week in 1970 with Girl, I’ve Got News For You, which I didn’t know, but recognised the band name, who seem to have been wiped from history, though I recall them on Top Of The Pops in 1972 unless I’m having delusions. The follow-up was released in 1970 but took 2 years to hit the UK, so expect it later in the year cos I love it.

My Retro August 1970 Charts

img043

More popcorn transfers, animated “Monkey” series, some traditional costumes, and some racing cars not looking like modern Formula-1 cars at all.

1st August 1970

It’s straight in at 1 for Hot Chocolate who debut with Love Is Life having signed up to Mickie Most’s RAK Records, and it’s fab sailing ship logo, fresh from a brief stint on Apple Records. I love this record, I love Hot Chocolate and Errol Brown, and the songwriting team of Errol Brown/Tony Wilson don’t get enough love being as the gang were mostly a singles act. On the plus side, this kicked off 15 consecutive years of chart success in the UK. That means Diana Ross gets a single week on top, as the high new entries start to come in thick and fast this week, and for the next few weeks. Meanwhile new-to-me Rodgriguez’ Sugar Man is up to 4, and a 2014 remix is in my current personal top 10 to boot.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles get a 3rd top 10 as Tears Of A Clown climbs, there’s no denying Smokey Robinson is a fab lyricist, and a great melody man, The New Seekers take Melanie’s song into the top 5 – as Melanie enters at 15 with her original version (and future chart hit), taken from her April album Candles In The Rain, as her latest single pops in at 80. Just to rub it in, there are 2 more Melanie tracks entering from the same album, one a future hit, the other a future New Seekers cover (again) – I have to say Melanie (or her label) were oblivious to commercial songs, going instead for worthy, dreary singles and ignoring the far superior quirky, melodic songs she wrote. So, a cover of The Rolling Stones’ Ruby Tuesday enters at 22, and Nickel Song at 27.

Released a couple of months earlier with limited availablity, the Motown single for R.Dean Taylor starts to get properly available this month and take off into the US charts for his biggest US hit, Indiana Wants Me following in the tradition of murder-story ballads – it’s no Ghost In My House or Gotta See Jane, which both frantically danced to the top of my charts in 1967/68 (the former after I amended the charts I posted on here because everyone forgot to chart it, including me), but it’s still fab. In at 13. Highest climber, into the 40, is Aretha Franklin, as Jimmy Cliff somehow gets hold of Cat Stevens Wild World before release, at 60.

No it’s not Halloween, but Monster Mash is a hit again in the US Hot 100, and would be an even bigger hit in the summer of 1973 on both sides of the Atlantic, so may as well chart it now rather than 1973 as I expect my charts will be even busier than the 1970 charts are – and they are chock-a-block right now, anyway. Charles Wright is back, Express Yourself being one of those songs you know without knowing you know, a funk workout, as The Archies go top 20 with a B side I was a fan of in 1970. The Archies track in my actual charts of the time is a couple of months early – I got my dates wrong when I retrospectively compiled my charts according to what I recalled liking at the time while it was still fresh in my memory (I was still in my teens).

8th August 1970

It’s Hot Chocolate getting a 2nd week on top in a hugely competitive top 16 for me, frankly they should all be top 5 and the next ten or so top 10. Rodgriguez, a track new to me, is at 3 which is amazing considering what’s it up against in my affections. Melanie’s original version pushes out The New Seekers cover of What Have They Done To My Song, Ma in a case of lyrics-as-reality, but I love both versions. R.Dean Taylor gets a 3rd top 10, Neil Diamond also a 3rd as Cracklin’ Rosie is the highest new entry at 9, just edging out the 3rd version of Woodstock to chart, and the best version by some distance, from Matthews Southern Comfort. Ian Matthews would be back with another goodie – in 1979.

Melanie has 2 top 20’s as Ruby Tuesday goes where The Rolling Stones have gone before, and Warm Earth go where The Temptations have gone before – it peaked at 20 in 1967 – but I think I prefer this banging pyschedelic Motown version to the original. The Four Tops are back with another goodie, Still Water (Love) at 26, they can do no wrong right through to 1974 or so. There’s a big climb for Jimmy Cliff’s Wild World, another melodramatic goodie from Tom Jones, I (Who Have Nothing) in at 53, the non-stop 5th Dimension entries continue with On The Beach, and Deep Purple return from their Hush debut 2 years earlier with Black Night, as Ian Gillan fronts their big period of success, and 50 years later they have also debuted in my current personal chart as Gillan’s vocals still resonate on new stuff.

15th August 1970

It’s 3 weeks on top for Hot Chocolate as R.Dean Taylor makes a leap for a 3rd chart-topper and falls short at 3. Melanie, meanwhile makes it 2 top 10’s simultaneously as her cover of Ruby Tuesday makes it the 2nd version to go top 10. The Four Tops get a 9th top 20 with Still Water (Love), Jimmy Cliff gets a 3rd top 20 as his You Can Get It If You Really Want enters at 30, beaten by Desmond Dekker’s cover version at 18 which was the hit version I knew and loved at the time, his 4th chart entry and 2nd top 20.

Aretha gets a 6th top 20, and Monster Mash goes top 40 3 years early, as another oldie from the Summer Of ’73 enters at 74 for Al Martino, Spanish Eyes, the comeback hit for the man who kicked off topping the first UK chart in 1952. The Archies Sunshine album is out, and in pops the best track Comes The Sun at 58, which was heavily plugged on the cartoon TV show I loved in Singapore, which I recorded on a hand-held microphone, complete with boings, and other extraneous noises from next door’s yapping dog, and mum and dad going out for the evening, giving an intentionally noisy kiss while I gave the shush finger sign.

Brian Hyland returns after a gap of 10 years, or is 5 years early, depending on how you look at it. One of my early obsessions was Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, loved as a pre-school kid, and for the rest of the decade and beyond, so you could say it’s the biggest chart gap for a follow-up had I been charting aged 2. Or you can say it’s 5 years before Sealed With A Kiss is revived UK hit and a top 5 track for me. Regardless, Gypsy Woman is one I’ve known of for decades but never really caught before and it’s rather good. Both the previous songs have had to endure awful UK Number One cover versions by Jason Donovan and Timmy Mallet. Bombalurina’s is especially terrible.

Curtis Mayfield & mates are back for an 11th chart entry, none of which I’d heard of of before these retro countdowns started up, he really was quite the talent, and The James Gang debut with funky rock some years before one of them joined The Eagles after a run of chart of success – that’ll be guitarist Joe Walsh then, 8 years before his fab solo hit Life’s Been Good.

22nd August 1970

It’s back up to number on for Diana Ross’ Ain’t No Mountain High Enough for a second week on top after holding at 2 for 3 weeks behind Hot Chocolate. One of the fascinating things for me about revisiting (and discovering) music from 50 years ago is how much my tastes have changed over that period, some tracks I still love, some I’m surprised to see peaking much lower than I thought, especially chart-toppers like Desmond Dekker, my number one 50 years ago, which is doing OK at 16, but not as high as Hot Choc who are at 2 in both charts. Such is the competitive quality of that time that the top 5 could all be number ones, the top 10 top 3’s, the top 20 all top 10’s, top 40 top 20’s, and the top 60 all top 40’s.

Aretha grabs another top 10 with a track I didn’t know in 1970, one I’d been aware of since the later 70’s but never really loved until now. Fab! Jimmy Cliff goes top 10 with Cat Stevens Wild World while his own You Can Get It climbs. Highest new entry is Glen Campbell’s show-stopping cover of It’s Only Make Believe, still the definitive version by a long distance, as he goes all Roy Orbison on it and shows he has the range. The Carpenters album is out, and from it the next single enters at 17, the lovely We’ve Only Just Begun – a Paul Williams song, a much-under-rated singer-songwriter and actor – and also a cherry-picked album track, the lush Crescent Noon at 62.

Jimmy Mack returns, having gone top 10 in 1967, and Paranoid debuts for Black Sabbath at 47, far and away their best track, and still the best thing Ozzy Osbourne has been involved in. Freda Payne gets a decent follow-up, Kris Kristofferson debuts the 1973 Perry Como hit, For The Good Times, and Tommy Roe keeps his run of bubblegum going with a single that came out in the UK in 1972 when the Bay City Rollers (version one) covered it as a follow-up to Keep On Dancing. I liked both versions, but haven’t heard Tommy’s version of We Can make Music in 48 years, and I heard it once at the most even then!

29th August 1970

It’s straight in at 1 for the latest teen idol and manufactured TV pop group, David Cassidy and The Partridge Family, and the very fab I Think I Love You. The show aired in Singapore so I was a big fan of the music and the sitcom-with-music roughly based on the real-life Cowsills family and band. The show debuted at the end of September, but the single was out this week with it’s equally-plugged and fab B Side Somebody Wants To Love Me, in at 39. Both were on an EP later in the year and I gave mum & dad my pocket money when they went shopping in the City to buy me it – and they came back with The Archies EP, which was better than nothing at all, but not what I really wanted! Shirley Jones, famously in 50’s musical movies, was David’s step-mother in real life, and the star of the show until Cassidy-Mania took-over at which point they dropped the godawful muzak filler tracks with session singers from their albums that were cast-free. Voice Of The Beehive also had a decent hit with the song in 1990, but my heart is still with the harpsichord and David’s belting vocal.

Up to 3, Glen Campbell gets an 11th top 10 in these retro countdowns, as It’s Only Make Believe climbs to 3, and Carpenters get a second top 10 as they get a 3rd top 40 with the both-lovely We’ve Only Just Begun and Crescent Noon, the 3 essential tracks from their new album. In at 21, The Tremeloes are back with an 8th top 40, the terrific Me And My Life, Love pop back with their 1968 chart-topper as it belatedly makes the US 100, and Blue Mink get a 3rd single, the good Our World. The Delfonics keep up their run of soul-goodies with a song I had no idea they did – When You Get Right Down To It was a UK hit for Ronnie Dyson in late 1971 when I was back in the UK, and a great version too.

The Uniques enter with a 1966 track, All These Things, White Plains get a trio of entries, Jonathan King tries his hand at another cover – this time one I didn’t know he’d done, Neil Diamond’s Cherry Cherry which pre-dates my 1967 retro-chart-start, so it’s a first appearance, albeit a lesser version. The Three Degrees return with an OTT diva reading of the wedding vows, guaranteed to appeal to women and girls of a certain age, and Cliff sneaks in with another track of his I missed at the time and still don’t know much of.

My Charts 2018 Jan-April

29th april 2018
Its a first week on top for Built By Titan and fab bhangra-stylee rhythms in the lush pop mix, leaping up 18 places for a Buzzjack Song Contest top 2. Foster The People get a second top 5 a few years late and Kylie still has 2 songs climbing inside the 20. Human leap into the 20, as do calvin n dua in the 40. New entries are lesser this week, lots of oldies from World Record Day pushing them into the UK sales top 100, including Soft Cell back with the original fab version of Say Hello 36 years after peaking at 2, Aladdin Sane album track Cracked Actor 45 years on for Bowie, the original Prince version of Nothin Compares, and The Small Faces oldie which technically charted for me in 1976 on reissue, but actually if id started compiling my charts a few months earlier in 1968 it would easy have been a top 5 then.

22nd April 2018

It’s Kylie on top with album track country ho-down A Lifetime To Repair, MUST be a future single surely! It’s the 2nd time she’s taken an album track on top (Aphrodite in 2011 was the previous one), and the 12th time on top. Bizarrely it took her 6 years of singles to grab one (1994 Put Yourself In My Place) and another 6 years to wait for a second one (Kids, with Robbie) before the floodgates opened – 2001, 2 in 2002, 2005, 2 in 2010, 2014, and most recently 2017 as guest vocalist with Zoot Woman. Meanwhile her new version of Stop Me From Falling with added Gente De Zona and Spanish lyrics ahead of my Spanish holiday next week does what it says on the tin – stops her from falling, and it climbs back into the top 5, helped by a Queen’s birthday performance.

That stops Abba from grabbing the top with 1978 chart-topper Summer Night City, back out for World Record Day, which leads a mini-invasion of vinyl-retro-reissues from The Undertones (1979 under-appreciated gem), William De Vaughan (ditto 1974 gem back with the original version 44 years on), Boz Scaggs 1977 top 10 great, Holland-Dozier’s post-Motown goodie a full 46 years since it last made my top 20, and 1998 chart-topper from Air, Sexy Boy.

Highest new track is from Built By Titan at 19, with Foster The People (2011 former chart-toppers) back after a 4-year gap with their already second-biggest chart hit at 23, and Miles Kane is back with his first solo entry in 5 years, and some 7 years on from his top 10 Rearrange. Plus he gives Lana Del Ray a second chart presence. Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande add to their list of entries, while Calvin Harris extends his run to 11 years including 2 chart-toppers in 2013 and 2015.

Another DJ superstar-producer died tragically young at 28 this week, which explains the several returns for Swedish Tim Bergling aka Avicii. His best track remains Hey Brother for me, one of 4 top 10’s, though he also worked with Benny & Bjorn of Abba for a Eurovision collaboration, and belatedly his recent hit with Rita Ora enters my chart for the first time as I caught the video at the end of a music video tribute show.

15th April 2018

It’s Canadian Ria Mae on top with the classy and clever EDM of Bend heading off the mighty singalong yee haw of Kylie’s A Lifetime To Repair, surely it must be a single! Of last week’s deluge of album tracks, Eels leapfrog themselves to grab a second top 10 of 2018, and that surely must be the next single. Lana Del Ray’s definitively touching version of You Must Love Me gives her a 6th top 10, 3 of them covers – Blue Velvet from the 60’s, You Must Love Me from the 90’s, and Disney’s Once Upon A Dream from 1959. It’s rare that I like covers better than the originals, but Lana has a knack for it.

Kylie gets a 4th top 10 of the year with Jack Savoretti, a 6th top 20, and a 7th top 30, and it’s only April. I don’t know how many times she’s featured in my charts (my stats are not anywhere near complete yet) but she’s had at least 55 since 1997, and I’m guessing at least 25 prior to that so well on the way to 100. Not bad from someone I dismissed as a weedy-voiced SAW novelty soap-star 30 years ago, and who I’m paying £80 to see in September (again).

The Weeknd replaces himself in my top 20, his 3rd of the year, Kacey Musgraves goes top 30, Florence is back in the 40, her 19th chart entry in 9 years. There are only 2 new entries, at 74 another single from P!nk (wrong choice though, Where We Go was the commercial one) and yet another Pet Shop Boys album track from their debut Please, and the last one lined up to debut in my chart. Actually will get attention next, the deluxe version.

8th April 2018

It’s straight in for a 40th anniversary vinyl picture disc reissue on top – or rather the B side of Take A Chance On Me – just ahead of World Record Day when another Abba 1978 classic gets that treatment. Back in the day I didn’t allow Abba B sides and album tracks in my charts (or any other acts) because my top 10’s would have been Ed Sheeran invasions and there was too much to love equally as much. Well now streaming has pooed on that in the real charts, so have I changed my rules. So a huge fave in 1978 finally gets it’s own chance to shine, having previously popped into my top 10 in 1999 during an Abba invasion sparked by a Box-set of rarity singles. I’m A Marionette was the key track in a mini-musical of The Album and The Movie. It would sound great in Mamma Mia 2, is all I’m suggesting…

So 44 years of Abba chart-toppers (pretty much all singles and as many album tracks) which stops a gloriously singalong cheesy country track from Kylie doing it (A Lifetime To Repair), but gives her a 3rd top 10 off Golden – along with another 3 new ones, making it a very greedy 6 scattered around the chart – it is a very good album though, most of the tracks stand out as potential singles. That’s not all, though, it’s been a very good week for new albums, 2 big ones from The Weeknd enter, 2 biggies from Eels, 2 from Lissie (all now having 3 in the list), 2 from Lisa Stansfield, and 2 from Kacey Musgraves. Phew!

I saw Kim Wilde headlining her first tour in decades with a new album Hear Come The Aliens, on Saturday, and rather fab she was too, really rocking it family-style with bruv Ricky and niece Scarlet. Some of the new stuff sounded as fab as the old classics, which gives a boost to Kandy Krush into the 20 some 37 years since show-closer stormer Kids In America. She is still as engaging as ever and a great back-catalogue to boot.

The mass invasion is bad news for a lot of records which fall or drop out prematurely when they should be climbing, but hey that’s chart-life, if it’s chockablock there’s only 75 spots available! Meanwhile another album track (Lloyd Webber at 70) from Lana Del Ray enters, covering the Evita add-on for Madonna’s film version, and I must say I much prefer Lana’s reading. Meanwhile Florence covers Tiny Dancer for an Elton/Bernie multi-artist effort, a fab song that was not a hit single in the early 70’s, and she has the best track on the album. That leaves only Alice Merton returning her No Roots to the chart a year on as it finally becomes a UK radio/chart presence. Better late than never.

1st april 2018

It’s a first week on top for the haunting You’re So Cool, giving New Zealander Jonathan Bree his first solo hit and first chart-topper. He’s actually made my chart before, as co-vocalist & producer on Princess Chelsea’s The Cigarette Song a couple of years ago, both tracks also having fab arty videos which he was behind. Talented! Meanwhile Paloma Faith grabs yet another quick top 10 hit with her lively version of Mama Cass’ 1969 minor hit up 30 places to 8.

Highest new entry is pop goodie from Robinson at 14, while Kylie gets a second in the 40 with grat track and obvious future single Raining Glitter in at 21. Kim Wilde gets a 2nd top 40 of 2018, I am hoping to see her at the weekend again, and Robbie is back with the lead track off his fan-club-only album of bonus tracks B sides & bits n pieces. Sia’s back with David Guetta, Flames isn’t quite Titanium, but it’s not bad for over half-a-decade on.

It’s a first chart-topper for Lissie and her fab fab melody and vocal, as 2 great videos charge Ria Mae up to 8, and a new entry from Jonathan Bree which has to be seen, 60’s pastiche and a haunting song. Beca goes top 10 with me and no-one else in the world who does personal charts (I expect!) which is a shame.

The rest of the chart is Paloma and Pet Shop Boys oldies chock-a-block, Panic! At The Disco are back for a 12th year of chart-bothering, and Mai Lan gets a solo entry to add to her big top 3 track 2 years ago with M83.

18th March 2018

It’s a 3rd week on top for Kendrick and SZA, still sounding great, as are the whole top 10, all of them lower than they deserve (bar one). Lissie gets her highest-ever peak of 2, and JT goes top 3 for a full 20 years of ’em. In at 5 it’s the original B side to the new entry at 35 for the Pet Shop Boys – Paninaro was equally loved by me in 1986 as A side and chart-topper Suburbia, but I didnt allow B sides and album tracks in those to avoid swamping my charts with fave acts like Abba and Pet Shop Boys. These days, since Sheeran & the stupid streaming takeovers of the UK & US charts, I’ve said sod it, I’m doing the same – so as Please (one of 3 deluxe 80’s album versions to chart last week) is back I’m recharting tracks I would have charted (but didn’t). That means the banging 12″ mix of Paninaro (Italian fashion movement) enters at 5, having peaked in the top 5 in the mid 90’s in a belated inferior remake, and Suburbia is back again also in an 8 minute plus extended version. In The Night also enters (better known as The Clothes Show TV theme tune back in the day), while Two Divided By Zero climbs.

They aren’t the only act taking over the charts though – Paloma Faith’s chart-topper drops out, but two new ones enter giving her 4 tracks: Til I’m Done revives in my CD playlists, love the manic ending and her vocal, back up to 11 leapfrogging the top 20 combo with Sigala. Another duet, with Sia, and clearly a Sia OTT ballad for a Game or something, enters at 45 (not available to buy) as an advert track (I think) also enters at 64: Paloma’s version of the fab Mama Cass 1969 hit of the Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill song. Kylie meanwhile keeps the dance yee-haws a-coming at jumps straight in at 8 for 2 top 10’s in a row.

Big climbs for Years & Years, and Owl City, the latter getting a second top 30 hit, and Lykke Li covers the 1973 Jim Croce classic Time In A Bottle which topped my chart thanks to an X-Men movie sequence a couple or 3 years back. Kim Wilde’s new album is out, and she grabs another chart entry out of it, Sade return for the first time in 7 years, and 34 years on from Your Love Is King jazzing up the charts, and the UK Eurovision song sneaks in as the Finland entry drops a bit at the top end of my chart. Expect that ratio to be repeated on the day…

11th March 2018

It’s a second week on top for Kendrick Lamarr and SZA, a great movie song for the closing credits, leading a static top 4, all still sounding fab. The Partridge Family’s 1970 album track and TV show performance finally makes my top 10, err, 47 years late – the episode featured around a Black urban area show for charity, so fits in nicely with a blockbuster black superhero movie. In 1971 (when I first saw the TV show) I was into DC comics with social conscience themes, like Teen Titans and many others. It was a time of optimism that things were changing.

Killer makes the top 10 for the 3rd time for Seal, all versions different, and The Fratellis make it a 4th top 10, while highest new entry is from a newish US singer called Beca who popped up on my twitter with her new mid-80’s sounding track, We exchanged some messages, I bought it, and here it is in at 18, ironically ahead of the lead track from Pet Shop Boys first album – it’s sort of late 80’s Pet Shop Boys-sounding in some respects with the synth chords. The PSB’s have 3 reissues with bonus tracks, giving me an opportunity to own them on CD as well as vinyl, charting in the UK top 75, and a chance to chart all those tracks that I excluded because I didnt let album tracks into my charts once I started buying Abba albums – or else the chart would have been Ed-Sheeran-ed to death.

Big climbs for LPX and Meghan Trainor, Years & Years return, Don McLean’s classic 1972 UK chart-topper is back for the first time in 46 years as it re-enters the UK top 75 sales chart this week, giving me a perfect reason to let it have a decent chart run – I preferred American Pie at the time, and it was much better than I rated it at the time. Vincent isn’t about me (my middle name), but is about Van Gogh. His great great nephew lives locally running a transport service: Vincent Van Hire. Maybe.

Others: Leona Lewis is back, Owl City is back, both after breaks, Rainbow Kitten Surprise is not as cuddly as it sounds at all, alt-rock pretty much, but good, and in at the bottom end it’s Sting back with an assist from Shaggy. Some have commented on the Youtube video that they are surprised at the pairing, never saw that one coming, and the like. Being old, I’m more surprised it took this long for them to pair up: Sting had non-stop reggae-rock monsters for 3 years in The Police, almost 40 years ago, and by 1993 when Shaggy was huge, so was reggae huge again, including Sting having more reggae hits with reggae acts on loan. The new one’s more gentle and less gutsy or poppy than the older ones, but nice to have them both back.

4th March 2018

It’s a first chart-topper for Kendrick Lamar and SZA as they leapfrog Kendrick’s other Black Panther soundtrack hit with The Weeknd who has to be content with yet another number 2 peak. Lissie goes up to 3 with her 6th chart entry, beating the 6 peak of When I’m Alone in 2010, and Hailee Steinfeld gets a first top 10, and a 2nd top 20 in one fell swoop. Florida Georgia Line similarly get a first top 10 and almost get a second one in the same week.

Janelle Monae gets her 3rd top 10 in 6 years since she hit 2 with fun. but her first solo entry with the very Prince-inspired and highest-climbing Make Me Feel. Funktastic. The Fratellis get their 5th top 20 entry, the first for 11 years, while highest new entry has gone all Pete Tong – as he turns into a Killer with his 2nd top 40 classic dance cover, featuring Seal, who thus gets a 3rd version of the 1990 Adamski chart-topper into my charts. He got no credit for what is essentially his own song, sung by himself (how times have changed, these days you get a label credit for farting in the background accidentally). He did record his own hit version a few years later but it wasn’t as good, though he did get another 2 chart-toppers himself alone in the 90’s. Just to rub it in, his 1990 classic debut hit, Crazy, has been covered in a very different style by Think Up Anger, and renamed Mutiny. No idea why Crazy isn’t the title.

New act Ria Mae is the highest new song, at 27, as Sigala and Paloma Faith both add to their list of top 40 tracks as Lullaby rockets into the 30. Alan Walker gets a 3rd top 40, Noah Cyrus a second, Imagine Dragons 4 out of 4 from the new album, and Rosemary Martins covers Donna Summer reggae-style spearheading a reggae-presence of 3 as UB40 also cover Stevie Wonder to get a 2nd in the chart. Or 2 UB20’s (almost, 3 members at any rate) which adds up to UB40 pretty much, given the actual vocalist Ali is singing.

Meghan Trainor is back, ditto Marshmello, Anne-Marie, and Gary Numan – Gazza has been absent since 2002, so he now extends his chart career to 39 years since Are ‘Friends’ Electric topped my chart in the summer of ’79. My Name Is Ruin is his best effort in a decade and a half.

25th february 2018

It’s Saara Aalto on top for a 3rd week, chasing by 2 Black Panther tracks (which I saw this week), giving Kendrick Lamar 2 of the top 3. No relation to Austrian inventor and movie actress Hedy Lamarr, who basically invented bluetooth in the 30’s (sort of) as part of a radio-wave missile-guidance system for allied troops and then became a gorgeous movie star in Hollywood. I can however listen to Kendrick Lamar now via bluetooth, so sort of linked. No relation in either case to fictional Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles. Hedy had a film-worthy life, though.

Florida Georgia Line and Hailee Steinfeld both have 2 top 20, and top 40, respectively, while CAIN (who?!) have the highest new entry with an unavailable Witchhouse track. Janelle Monae is back 3 years from her last chart entry – with Duran Duran – and 6 years since her monster fun. track. I now have a complete 1997-2017 database so can quote accurate stats from my charts during that period. Just 1968-1996 to add now…

5 Seconds of Summer get a second chart entry 4 years since the first, Imagine Dragons make it 4 off the latest album, Paloma Faith links with Sigala to give her 3 on the chart, and 23 in total. Sigala have had 4, and Franz Ferdinand get their 11th chart entry 9 years on from the last one (excluding their FFS project with Sparks).

18th February 2018

It’s 2 weeks on top for the Eurovision hopeful, as Al Green gets a first top 5 since Let’s Stay Together in 1972 (and it’s reissue in 2010 when it topped my chart). He last made my top 10 with new material in 2008, and would have been charting for 50 years had I compiled charts in early 1968. The Eels grab a 5th top 10 some 21 years after the first one, while Lissie gets a top 20 8 years on from her first rocketing up 35 places.

Hailee Steinfeld gets greedy, up 40 spots into the 20, while also entering at 45 with BloodPop assisting, t’other assistants Florida Georgia Line leapfrog themselves. Kendrick Lamar joins himself in the 30, SZA gets a second top 40. Highest new entry is MIKA, last in my top 10 in 2013, and first in with Grace Kelly in 2007, in between topping with flop Rain in 2009. The Fratellis also enter, having been absent for almost a decade, but having 3 top 10’s in 2006/7. Kishi Bashi grabs a 7th chart hit, Alan Walker a 3rd, Noah Cyrus a second, and sneaking in with an unreleased track (at least until friday) is Mel & Kim. Poor Mel died at a very young age at the height of their success, and are owed another bit of chart success, as it’s not bad at all from what I’ve heard so far, 30 years on.

Straight in at 1 it’s a record from Saara Alto, Finnish runner-up in X-Factor UK, and former The Voice Finland candidate. That makes her twice a song contest fave, but I have to say I don’t watch either shows anywhere these days. That makes it pretty extraordinary that a record I’d never heard until yesterday enters on top. Essentially, she’s engaging, and it sounds like a Eurovision Song Contest winning track – if only the BBC could come up with one like it. I rarely have singing competition singers top my chart (excluding Eurovision), and usually it’s well into their career when they do: Adam Lambert did it in 2017, Olly Murs in 2013, Agnes in 2009, Girls Aloud did it twice in 2007, and that’s about it for the 21st Century, none of them doing so with the first single after appearing. There is precedence though – Mary Hopkin won multiple weeks in a 60’s show called Opportunity Knocks, Paul McCartney signed her up to Apple Records, and she had 3 chart-toppers in 1968, 1969 and 1970 – only missing out on making it 3 in a row thanks to being the UK singer for Eurovision in 1970 with a cheesy entry, which slipped in before her final one.

Elsewhere, Florida Georgia Line get a double debut, both as featuring act, The Weeknd rockets to 3 with his Black Panther single, the film not even out yet, and giving him 5 years of top 3’s since Twenty Eight hit 2, and including a chart-topper with Ariana Grande. Disclosure eclipse their Sam Smith 2012 Latch single (peaked at 10) in one fell swoop by sampling the brilliant Al Green, one of the greatest soul singers of all-time. Lissie’s back after a slight gap, UB40 (or at least 3/8ths of them) string out a chart run to a whopping 38 years, and a six-year-old Mexican political track sneaks in at the bottom.

4th February 2018

It’s 2 weeks on top for the Irma Thomas 1964 soul gem fresh from Black Mirror. That keeps Kylie in her place as Revivalists have a god climb to 3 leapfrogging Justin Timberlake’s under-rated new track and Paloma’s 3rd single from the album. Kim Wilde rockets with Ricky to 22 from 74 – Ricky’s biggest chart credit since Mrs Malinski made my top 30 in 1974. No you don’t have to pretend you know it and it won’t be on Spotify. His voice has dropped quite a bit since then! Mine too.

The Eels return to my top 40 for the first time in 13 years, quite a gap, while Camilla Cabello outdoes Havana here and becomes her 2nd top 40. The Weeknd has an instant top 40 highest new entry, aided by Kendrick Lamar, who also enters lower with another track, both songs from the forthcoming 50 Shades film. Fleetwood Mac’s classic Rhiannon is well over 40 years old, and was last in my charts exactly 40 years ago – this is the album version, though, so the new Fleetwood Mac deluxe has given me an excuse to chart this uncharted version. Fab. Finally, Toto are back after a 30-year gap (bar reissues) with a souped-up version of an old unreleased very Rosanna period Toto, sadly I would prefer Hold The Line-period Toto, though Africa was fab.

28th January 2018

It’s in at 1 for a record I didn’t know a week ago – Irma Thomas’ brilliant 1964 soul ballad fresh from use in an episode of Black Mirror (via Buzzjack Song Contest). Hauntingly fab. That stops Kylie grabbing another chart-topper, but she adds to her long list of 2’s anyway. Paloma Faith gets a 3rd top 10 a in a row in a frantic chart, up 54 places. It’s been a long time since so many tracks were climbing at a pace like this, and bar the number one they are all new or recent-ish. That means a clear-out of 2017 tracks.

In at 7, highest new song is the first good track off Justin T’s forthcoming album, while The Revivalists shoot up to 8, and Liam Payne gets more solo top 10’s than One Direction managed, joined by Rita Ora getting a rare one. At 12, SSion, is a video mix of a ballad, pop song and pyscho Jesus & Mary Chain/Jesus Jones Info freako-ish popchartfreakout. Epic. Fall Out Boy get a 2nd top 20 in a row, Rudimental are back with Macklemore and Jess Glynne in tow, Dua Lipa doesn’t give a … about being late into my chart, ditto Tom walker, Eminem and Camilla cabello. Oldies Eels are back for over 20 years of hits including a chart-topper with Last Stop: This Time. Turin Brakes return, but it’s nothing next to Kim Wilde’s 37 year run aided by bruv (as ever) who gets a credit for the first time as he’s actually singing. Ricky first charted in 1972 with his flop (but well-played) pre-teen track I Am An Astronaut, and hit my top 10 with Teen Wave in 1974, a template for Kim’s 80’s smashes (sort of). So, Rick makes it 46 years (gasp!) and he’s younger than me…!

21st January 2018

It’s back into the top 10 for the 3rd time and all the way to the top for Craig David and Bastille, one of those tracks that doesn’t pall with repeat hearings. It’s the 3rd chart-topper for Craig (Walking Away and Hot Stuff, the former based on U2’s One, the latter Bowie’s Let’s Dance) and Bastille’s first. Hot on their heels though, Kylie’s back with a contemporary-sounding dance-country crossover and she’s Dancing to enter at 3, giving her a sweet 30 years of top 10 hits since I Should Be So Lucky hit 6.

Portugal. The Man are also back into the top 7 months on with Feel It Still, and also with new track Live In The Moment, sandwiching P!nk at 8 – her second top 10 off the new album and a sweet 18 years since There You Go hit 9. New at 13 it’s The Straw Hats – well, actually it’s Troyboi, but the Norwegian dance troupe have done a fab video for the short-but-sweet dance track in a Japanese-stylee. Appropriating culture or taking it to a wider audience? Actually most modern pop music is appropriated culture, and that includes Japanese acts, so whatever it looks terrific.

As a load of oldies depart the chart, some also pop in, topped by the late Dolores O’Riordan’s Cranberries, and their best record, Linger. Dolores died suddenly, and far too young, last week. The Revivalists is a couple or 3 years old, but one I missed, and Fall Out Boy are new in at 35 with the new album track, and are besides themselves. Amongst the deluge of new tracks, The Chainsmokers return, as does Noel Gallagher, that’ll be 24 years-worth of entries then.

Paloma Faith sneaks in with a dance track, for a hat-trick, Embrace enter 21 years since All You Good Good People hit 10 (and 14 years since they topped my chart with Gravity), Imagine Dragons keep the new entries coming 6 years since topping with Radioactive (well, nearer 5, but hey, it was 2012), as The Manics make it at least 25 years of newies, Bruno makes it 8 years (including 2 chart-toppers in Grenade and Marry You), Simple Minds return with only the one chart-topper in 1995 (She’s A River) but 36 years of hits. Finally, Mavis Staples pops in solo, after assisting Gorillaz last year, having been helped by Prince in 1991 with Melody Cool and on his tours wot-I-saw, and 46 years since I’ll Take You There hit my number 3 for The Staple Singers, Mavis’ sisters and dad.

14th January 2018

It’s Oh Wonder on top in an otherwise quiet chart week, their second chart entry, and a fab record, it borrows somewhat from Elton John’s fantastic Benny & The Jets, which topped my charts 44 years ago – at least the backbone of the record anyway. Midge Ure is also back in the top 10 with the same track 23 years on, a good version of Breathe. Sister Sledge make it a 5th top 10, 33 years on since the last one (albeit a 38-year-old record). Naughty Boy adds to his list of top 10’s (his 5th, including a number one – La La La), P!nk gets a 3rd top 20 in a row off the album, and Portugal. The Man get 2 top 20 entries – Feel It Still is back over 6 months later, and new track Live In The Moment is just below it.

Big climb for Jessie Ware, Bleachers finally got top 40, and Blondie are back again a very sweet 40 years from their debut with Denis (almost) and with Joan Jett in tow some 36 years since I Love Rock N Roll. She hasn’t troubled my charts since ILRNR was reissued in 1994, and not with new material since the 80’s! Lily Allen returns, not before time, 12 years since her debut and still yet to top my chart. Lana Del Ray and Anna Of The North return, and Wolf Alice get a debut at last.

It’s a second week for the lush Aretha Franklin ballad 44 years on, just holding off a massive 70-place leap for Oh Wonder, now getting well-deserved Radio 2 support. Radio 2 seems to have gone full on-board with the sort of new tracks that Radio 1 would have played a few years ago, which is good news. It’s a mass xmas song drop-out week, as 3 songs with Home in the title are in my top 10, ironically, as I’m still trapped at home caring for my mum with dad back in hospital, and me unable to get to work.

Midge Ure’s 1995 UK flop (but big with me) Breathe is back, in the orchestral vogue, which suits it better than some of the bigger hits on the album, while Naughty Boy is back with a Jonas brother in tow at 23, leaping over another Jonas brother at 24. Both doing better than any actual Jonas Brothers records ever did in my charts. Portugal. The Man’s 2017 oldie is back in the 40, as their new one enters at 48.

P!nk has a 3rd top 40 off the latest album, Lindsey & Christine get a 3rd of 5 album tracks to hit the 40, Pet Shop Boys version of their Girls Aloud/Xenomania hit belatedly pops in, Shed Seven return for over 20 years of entries, and Jessie ware has a welcome return.
