My January-April 2019 Charts

28th April 2019

It’s a first week on top for Raleigh Ritchie aka Jacob Anderson, Grey Worm in Game Of Thrones – I’m expecting him to get killed off when I see the latest episode, along with loads of fave regulars. I could do with Time In A Tree, though the White Walkers did kill off the magic tree north of the wall. Regardless it’s a great song with hints of the 30’s about it. Talking about fantasy, I just caught the fab Avengers: Endgame and the song played over the end credits dates back to 1945 – and it’s in at 15, the wonderful big band sounds of Harry James and 50’s hitmaker Kitty Kallen. It’s Been A Long, Long Time isn’t the oldest recording to enter my charts, not chronologically at any rate, but it is the oldest recording to wait to enter my chart at 74 years, 13 years before I was born.

Talking of 60-year-old’s, Madonna gets a 7th number 2 with newie Medellin – she is more likely top top my chart than peak at 2, so we’ll see next week if that happens! It’s 35 years since Holiday hit my top 5. Billie Eilsh gets her first top 10, 10cc go top 20 45 years late, John Newman and Mark Ronson both get big leaps into the 30, and also from Avengers: Endgame in at 52 after a gap of 47 years since it went top 10 for me as a 14-year-old into superhero comics and records with a sci-fi theme, and so it’s perfectly fair that that should be reflected in movies catching up with my tastes at long last, I had to wait 6 years for a decent superhero film, and well into the next century for a great one.

Taylor Swift is back dragging in Brendon Urie to give her comeback track a bit of oomph, Springsteen is back 44 years since Born To Run made my top 20, and he’s opted for an Eric Morecombe catchphrase, Hello Sunshine. Sort of. Jack Savoretti can’t be bothered waiting for each single to have a decent run before bunging out the next one these days, Macklemore & Fall Out Boy’s Patrick give good support to Martin Garrix, P!nk gets a 3rd album track, this time with Chris Stapleton getting his 2nd chart entry, and Florence returns with a Game Of Thrones song after the floppiness of her recent single which didn’t grab me much, joining Grey Worm on top, and the theme tune going up a few places. Shame! (rings bell). Shame! (rings bell). Shame! (rings bell)….

21st April 2019

It’s back on top for The Walker Brothers for a second week this year, and an 8th week in total. Bananarama get their first top 10 since they covered Moves Like Jagger in 2012 and highest-placed track since Love Don’t Live Here/The Runner (yes I was still listing double A’s together then) peaked at 6 in 2010. Mabel finally cracks the top 10, emulating her mum and uncle, and the highest new entry is a new musical direction for 60-year-old Madonna, still not giving a toss what people think she should do, quite rightly. In at 14 for Medellin and a joint effort with Maluma for some Columbian chart action that isn’t Shakira.

Raleigh Ritchie returns after 3 years away, and grabs his 3rd chart entry and equal-highest chart peak in one fell swoop since Bloodsports also peaked at 17. Better known as Grey Worm in Game Of Thrones these days, I just found out a bit late, as he was a recording artist before he was an actor for me – I didn’t start GOT until 2 years ago and didn’t make the connection. He has a great voice, singing and talking. The old-time samples add to the sad-mood of Time In A Tree. Dennis LLoyd meanwhile debuts at 20. Nevermind the name, it’s a pseudonym just like Raleigh Ritchie is, only RR is British and DL is Israeli.

At 29, Lil Nas X debuts, and drags along Billy Ray Cyrus for some country/urban crossover action, BRC of course more famous for his charting daughters these days, both have had a much better career in terms of recordings, but here you go, an unlikely return after 27 years away or so, and it’s way better than Achy Breaky Bloody Heart. Talking of Game Of Thrones, the theme tune finally charts, John Newman makes a comeback after a couple of years away for a 6-year run of entries, Mark Ronson is back again, this time with Lykke Li who charted in 2014 with Gunshot, Kacey Musgraves gets another entry, while former chart-toppers The Veronicas are also back after not following up their 2014 number one You Ruin Me, but get a 3rd entry 10 years since their debut.

14th April 2019

It’s a first week on top for Jackie, the late Scott Walker’s brilliant dramatic and naughty solo track from 1968, banned on the radio way back and written by the great Jacques Brel, a French star who could pen a great song at the drop of a hat back in the 60’s. It’s the second time on top, for a second week, both in the 21st century, being as it predated my charts by a couple of months, and was ineligible when I went mad on it in 1976/77 and beyond. Rock The Boat goes top 5 for a second time, thanks to Record Store Day releases (with more waiting to chart), Olly Murs gets another top 20, helped by Niles Rodgers who can claim a sweet 41-year chart-span as a result since Dance Dance Dance went top 10 in my first year at Uni, ah memories of recording onto cassette so I could play them when my room-mates were out or in – I like an audience for my music taste laugh.gif

Talking of oldies Baron Samedi gets top 20 some 45 years late (and outdoing the single off the album Silly Love) for 10cc, Morrissey has a second chart cover, the highly-unlikely version of Mozza crooning Laura Nyro’s Wedding Bell Blues, as hit for the The 5th Dimension in 1969, lo those 50 years back. Still a great song and a nice version at 22. P!nk also has 2 on the charts as she hustles her way into the 30, just behind Louise who leaps above her with a great comeback single, one of her best efforts.

The late Avicii gets a posthumous chart entry (a growing club at the moment) with Aloe Blacc helping on SOS, 6 years for Avicii, 8 years for Aloe. Foster The People started selling downloads again on the back of articles stating how they are shifting streaming “sales” in bucketloads to become the biggest track of 2011 since streaming started despite peaking at 18 in the UK charts. It topped my charts back then, so good to see the world catch up with me…. laugh.gif Tame Impala get a second charter, and ABC get two Lexicon Of Love debuts 37-years late. To be frank every track on the classic album is a gem, and Martin Fry is still fab in concert (which I saw last week).

Finally an advert is popularizing Together In Electric Dreams again, so I might as well chart it again, and Alan Parsons is back after a gap of at least 35 years, I’d say. Apart from being an Austin Powers gag, Alan was a music engineer on Abbey Road (The Beatles) and Dark Side Of The Moon (Pink Floyd) just to namedrop 2 classics, before producing brilliant hit records from the likes of Pilot, The Hollies, Al Stewart in the 70’s just ahead of his 80’s Alan Parsons Project hits like Eye In The Sky. A bit of a veteran then! Jason Mraz lends a vocal hand, 11 years since make It Mine debuted.

7th April 2019

It’s 2 weeks on top for The Walker Brothers, as the late great Scott challenges himself at 2 with the epic drama of Jackie. Mostly a quiet week chartwise as Ive not been able to listen to new music much. Mory Kante’s super 1988 number 2 is back yet again, Yeke Yeke is still a great dance track, in at 32, as the highest new track is at 44 for Vargas & Lagola, a bit selfish of them. The Jonas Brothers get a second chart entry, they are Cool with being at 10, and entering at 64 – wouldn’t have predicted that a decade ago! Back in the mid-90’s Eternal managed half a dozen top 40 entries in my charts, but they rarely troubled the top end of my lists, being as they weren’t good enough for that – eventually Louise bailed out for a pop career of about half a dozen years of just over half a dozen top 40 entries, including one biggie with her cover of Stuck In The Middle With You. Well, she’s back after a gap of 16 years! In at 72, it’s a bit of a stretch. Tom Walker gets a 3rd entry, Anderson .Paak a second, and The Move aka Roy Wood & future ELO, enter at 74 with the 49-year-old Brontosaurus. We’ve got Bones, the Son Of Man is also listed, so we just need T.Rex for a themed chart.

31st March 2019

It’s a 6th week (in total) on top for the Walker Brothers 1966 classic Four Seasons cover, the third time it has topped my chart as an oldie – The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore is the jewel in the crown of the great back catalogue of Scott Walker and his magnificent voice, and quirky, dramatic, often-banned solo career outside the more widely-loved (in the UK) Walker Brothers career. An American who was bigger in Europe, and more influenced by Europe, his death this week was a loss to me, hence the entries lower down, including the naughty Jackie, later covered well by Marc Almond, in at 4, having topped my charts before, as has Make It Easy On Yourself. With the loss of Ranking Roger from The Beat, and oldies from cinema and elsewhere there is only one new entry this week, at 75! That’ll be Marshmello and CHVRCHES then!

Number 2 in 1974, The Hues Corporation disco classic is back after a key moment in the movie Fishermen’s Friends, about the Cornish band of singing Fishermen (in the album chart again this week) – Rock The Boat, err well, it’s about the sea, I suppose, in at 8, Jack Savoretti gets another top 20, Tame Impala & Olly Murs go top 40, Will Young has a big climb, and that’s about it for the new stuff. Kate Bush pops in with a remix from her 4-track CD which I’ve bought, and the reason there’s not much new stuff is I’ve been to Liverpool to see friends and to revisit the much-changed city centre since the days of my childhood, teens and 20’s (my grandma lived there, and so did I back in 1966, the year The Walker Brothers topped the UK charts as it does this week). Beatles songs everywhere you go, quite rightly, in The Cavern, museums, bars, River Mersey seafront…. Just be thankful I didn;t re-chart them too! laugh.gif

25th March 2019

It’s a first week on top for yet another act to debut in 2009, following Paloma Faith, this time Empire Of The Sun and Chrysalis. They’ve come close 3 or 4 times, but previous highest peak slot was 2 for the Aussies. Well, I say first number one – actually Nick Littlemore hit the top as Pnau in 2012 along with Elton John on Sad, while Luke Steele almost topped my charts 18 years ago in The Sleepy Jackson and their Good Dancers.

Emeli Sande gets her second biggest hit (behind chart-topper Hurts) at 2, while her Sparrow is joined by a rat in the top – Rat City at 6. What with Cat in there too it’s a Jungle at the top. Mabel has a huge climb into the 30, the third family Cherry to do that, the Nanas are back in the 30 for a tasty 37th year. Go back to 1982, ask me what are the chances I would still be charting new Bananarama records in 2019, and I would have said, pretty much zero. Pretty much are though!

4 10cc album tracks climb, TLC are back in the 40 for the first time since it topped in 1995, Jungle get a 2nd simultaneous top 40, and Billie Eilish gets a 3rd of the year. New entries from Tame Impala, keeping them coming fresh off their top 10 collab, Olly Murs keeping the pop run going in my charts even if he’s not a UK chart regular anymore (I’ve always been much more faithful to acts than the ever-trend-chasing chart-mirroring average teen), Will Young is back knocking on 17 years since his early bland Evergreen and 15 years since he topped my chart with Friday’s Child. Sting & Shaggy are also back with another collab, Shaggy makes it 26 years, Sting solo 36 years, and with The Police 40 years. So a total of 66 years charting.

Bananarama 37 years? That’s nothing. Back when I was 15 Suzi Quatro joined RAK records in the UK, Nicky Chinn & Mike Chapman churned out glam rock stompers for The Sweet, Mud and many others including Suzi, who was pretty much the first female rocker to top the charts with Can The Can & Devil Gate Drive. So, Suzi is back with a new album collaboration with her son, and gets the first 2 tracks off it into my charts. Not too far from Glam Rock, it’s fair to say. So, 46 years later and she still charts, and still has never topped my charts. Outrageous! That must be the longest chart career of anyone who has never had a number one for me, despite having at least 3 that deserved to, her last serious effort was in 2011 when she went top 10 with a great cover of Goldfrapp’s Strict Machine.

17th March 2019

It’s a first week on top for Paloma faith’s Your Ex, 10 years on from New York becoming her first chart-topper, with 2 others and a guest spot with Sigma making 5 in total. 10CC (sort of) get another top 5 to belatedly add to their 49-year total (sort of) incorporating their 1970 hit Neanderthal Man. Emeli Sande gets the highest new entry, 8 years on from debut Heaven, as Sparrow flies into the top 20, fluttering in between high climbs for Parker Bossley and Jonas Brothers. Rat City go top 30, as a handful of tracks from 10CC’s first two albums enter my charts for the first time, following seeing them in concert: Those were two of my key albums of the 70’s, I adored them at the time, but didn;t allow album tracks in my charts at the time, so justice at last!

1995 chart-topper Waterfalls brings TLC back, Elastica’s pounding Connection is back, and Garbage’s Top 5 Only Happen When It Rains pours in, all thanks to Captain Marvel, while Dido gets another track entering, and Rozes returns.

10th March 2019

It’s a new entry at for for Morrissey’s cover of Roy Orbison’s classic chart-topper, It’s Over, aided and abetted (without credit) by LP. I never knew he had the vocal croon in him, but it’s an emotive song and he does a jolly good job, even if he is a miserable sod generally. That means: his first top 3 since 2004’s The First Of The Gang To Die, and his first-ever solo chart-topper after 31 years of trying, AND outdoing near-misses from the Smiths (This Charming Man & How Soon Is Now). Long overdue, and LP gets a second top 10 to boot.

There are 24 new entries this week in a massive clear-out of my chart, there are some classic oldies stacked up flying in circles waiting for a gap too, cos I’ve been to see Captain Marvel & it’s 1995 nostalgia-fest of indie tracks, and fab 10cc in Concert (headed by Graham Gouldman) some 37 years since I last saw them – Eric Stewart was still in the band then, but Godley & Creme were long-departed. Amazingly, the rest of the 1982 line-up are still playing, with the addition of new vocalist Hornal, who enters with his co-write with Graham & featuring Kevin Godley to boot – so it’s basically a 10cc track, both in style and substance. The concert started with a 2006 track that escaped me at the time by GG/06 – Gouldman/Godley, a sample of Hotlegs 1970 Neanderthal Man – who were 10cc minus Gouldman – and a great storyline telling the 10cc story. So all 4 members feature on it, making it the first new original-line-up track since 1976 and in at 15. Graham Gouldman wrote Bus Stop for The Hollies in 1966, a teenage songwriter, and appropriately they enter at 69 with a track featured on Netflix’ The Umbrella Academy, 1964’s We’re Through, a goodie I have never really noticed before, but which vaguely sounds familiar (I was watching pop shows on TV in those days).

Empire Of The Sun enter at 7 with a spruced-up ten-year-old unreleased track (I think!), their highest-charting since the same-period top 3’s We Are The People & Walking On A Dream. Cat Pierce debuts at 8 with another TV feature, very Lana Del Ray-ish and cool, and Paloma Faith vaults up to 4, her biggest for 2 years, and keeps her run of top 5 singles at 11 years and counting. Pink rockets into the 30, Welshly Arms debut at 40, and the Jonas Brothers get a second hit 11 years late. They previously charted SOS at 75 for one week, and bust that comprehensively now they are all growed up and have charted solo and in DNCE in the interim with some great singles. That has to be the longest ever wait for a follow-up chart feature for an act that peaked at 75!

Jack Savoretti is back again before he’s even left, Bananarama get a second entry of the year 38 years on, Sophie Ellis-Bextor orchestrates her 2001 chart-topper for some clubbing nostalgia for me (a big track when I was out every weekend in Southampton), Gabrielle also returns fairly quickly with her comeback 27 years on, Billie Eilish gets a 3rd as the previous 2 drop out, Jungle chart a second track, SYML gets that follow-up entry, as does Ava Max, and Mabel pops in some 30 years after her mum first popped in my charts – that’s be Neneh Cherry then…

3rd March 2019

It’s straight in at 1 for 1978 Eurodisco obscure goodie American Generation, giving The Ritchie Family a belated chart-topper 40 years after it peaked around 40 places lower, and thanks to my rediscovering it and entering it into the BJSC. I’ve gone slightly mad on it’s hooks and retro-charm! The sisters first charted in 1975 for me, then hit my top 10 with The Best Disco In Town in 1976, and have had to wait a whopping 44 years to get that chart-topper.

This week I’ve been on holiday in Gran Canaria, and haven’t had any time to listen to new music, or current music for the most part, so mostly oldies enter my charts. I was at the airport when I heard the sad news about the death of Keith Flint, hence his greatest moment back in my top 5 23 years on, on top of the loss of Talk Talk mainman Mark Hollis, which has also brought their best tracks back in my chart for the 3rd time in the case of chart-topper It’s My Life, and twice top tenner Life’s What You Make It.

24th February 2019

It’s 2 weeks on top for the symphonic Killing Moon, just holding off Zedd grabbing his first chart-topper, and Katy Perry her 4th, so she has to make do with equalling 2008’s Hot ‘n’ Cold instead at 2. There’s big climb to 4 for Jungle, their highest chart position to date, and Bob Sinclar to 7, beating his peak of 9 in 2006 with World Hold On. Robbie of course has never stopped having top 10’s in 26 years, with Take That or solo.

Khalid gets his 2nd top 20 of the year already, and Sigrid gets her second ever with big climbs. CHVRCHES grab a top 30 with a hfty move upwards, boyband Why Don’t We go Bieber-soundalike and do it quite well into the 40, Pet Shop Boys get a 5th top 40 of the week, while highest new entry is from paloma’s deluxe version, of the album which thankfully I didn’t buy or I would have been pissed off at belated tracks being released.

The Monkees get 2 new (old) entries following the death of Peter Tork – For Pete’s Sake is the closing credits song to the ground-breaking 60’s TV show, written by Peter, and Your Aunty Grizelda is a Peter-sung quirky track which in the UK was the soundtrack to a sequence in the horror parody episode I Was A Teenage Monster. For some reason the UK totally messed around with the songs in UK-screened episodes, but in this case it worked much better than the US original. I recorded the episode on reel-to-reel tape back in the day, and was most disappointed to find the US box set has a lot of wrong songs in the wrong episodes (for my boyhood memories).

P!nk gets a BRITS boost this week and wham! she’s back in chart fashion, while never dropping out of being in chart fashion in my charts – some of the last album’s tracks were well-worthy of single release and counted in these charts – whcih is what really counts tongue.gif

17th February 2019

It’s a new entry and first week on top for a symphonic version of Echo & The Bunnymen’s stunningly great 1984 The Killing Moon, as effectively showcased in the cult movie Donnie Darko. I got the Symphonic 80’s album as a CD prezzie, and this was the remaining stand-out version I’d not charted – It originally peaked at 2 in my charts, and the revamp isn’t quite as good as the original, but the record has severely under-performed in my charts compared to how I feel about it these days (“absolute classic”) so an excuse to chart it is welcome by me. By way of compensation there has been a massive clear-out of oldies from my charts and lots of new stuff.

Dua Lipa gets her 2nd number 2, equalling Be The One, and falling short of chart-topper Hotter Than Hell. Zedd’s back in the top 20 after his top 20 with Liam Payne in 2017, and Katy Perry is guesting, and back in the top 20 since her swathe of 2017 chart peaks, including a number one with Chained To The Rhythm. The Chainsmokers drag along 5 Seconds Of Summer for another top 40 before the last one has left the 20, while Bob Sinclar gives Robbie Williams his 2nd top 40 guest spot of the year, Robbie’s span of hits a surprising 23 years since he gained his Freedom from Take That, or 27 years including the lads.

Jungle are back with another top 40, Sigrid pops back with a 3rd, Khalid gets a 2nd in the chart, CHVRCHES are back with another, Kelsea Ballerini gets a 2nd on the chart, and CNCO and Grace Carter both follow-up recent chart action.

10th February 2019

It’s a first week on top for Bobbie Gentry’s fabulously moody Sermon, from 1967 the song, giving Mercury Rev a second chart-topper just over 17 years since the last one, the gorgeous The Dark Is Rising. Margo Price gets her first doing a pretty good job of competing with the much-missed Bobbie Gentry (missed as in she stopped her music career over 40 years ago). That keeps the Pet Shop Boys 1990 album track at 2 in a week when they release an EP of political or social commentary tracks, called Agenda – as in commenting on those with agendas, while having an agenda (but a worthy one, being as I agree with every word of every song). All four enter my charts, giving Chris n Neil 6 tracks in my chart. The highest new entry is What Are We Going To Do About The Rich at 19 – tax ’em heavily and force ’em to reveal all their interests worldwide, I say! Give Stupidity A Chance is an ode to Trump, or Brexit, or anything really that puts opinion, hatred and lies over facts, and is quite amusing and as clever as always. The Forgotten Child is clearly about the thousands of illegal immigrant children that have gone missing under Trump. Nobody knows where they are, and if they are even alive.

Jack Savoretti gets a 4th top 10 in 4 years, Dua Lipa a 7th, huge climbs for Tommy Trash & The Chemical Brothers into the 20 as I’m clearly in a mood for clubbing. Yola, Galantis & The Revivalists get big climbs into the 40, and the only new track that doesn’t feature “Pet” in the name is from Marina getting a follow-up to her Clean Bandit collab, her 9th chart entry in 9 years, including a top 10 in Prima Donna in 2012.

This week I finally got to see Tears For Fears in concert for the first time – they were still fab, Curt still looking good, and a back catalogue of hits to impress. If I don’t get many new entries again next week I may have to rechart Head Over Heels which under-performed in my charts! When I heard it in Donnie Darko I realised the error of my ways. Alison Moyet supported, but Ive seen her headline already with a much bigger setlist. I have to say there can be few touring acts that can start a set with a huge classic on the scale of Everybody Wants To Rule The World.

3rd February 2019

It’s a first week on top for Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus after a 10-week wait: it’s Mark Ronson’s second chart-topper, 2014 with Bruno Mars his last one, and MIley Cyrus’ first. Pet Shop Boys meanwhile add to their mighty long list of top 5’s with a great track off Behaviour. Big climbs for Ten Tonnes, Dido, Dua Lipa & Solomon Burke. New entries from OneRepublic and Galantis adding to their chart tallies, The O’My’s return with the same song they got into the top 3 last year, The Revivalists get a second chart entry, ditto Fleur East, and The Chemical Brothers extend their chart entries another year, to 24 years.

27th January 2019

It’s 2 weeks on top for Pet Shop Boys great 1992 single Jealousy, presiding over a shuffling top 10, with Mark Ronson yet again being denied the top spot due to oldies. Tom Jones The Voice-pushed itunes charting oldie is peaking at 9 for thee second time this century – it last did it in 2003, and charted again in 2011 – had I been charting in 1967 it would have gone top 10 then too, and again in 1969 when it became a US hit (had I been aware of it). Georgia rockets to 10 from 58, one I’d missed late last year, followed closely by the highest new entries from Lizzo, and SHAED, the former on Radio 1 & 2 playlists, the latter an Apple Music advert.

Big climbs for The Specials back in the top 30 for at least the 10th time, or 20th counting Fun Boy Three and solo projects, Halsey finally cracks the 40 with her current smash, and Charlotte Gainsbourg does it on her second chart feature, a mere 44 years since her mum & dad were dropping having topped my chart over the new year 1974/75 with a very naughty banned record that I bought. Dua Lipa’s back, so many hits so little time for a breather in between, and Dido returns for the first time in years, extending her run to 19 years solo. Both Dua and Dido have topped my charts previously. Trevor Horn does a mellow version of his own production for Grace Jones – this time with Rumer – and at the bottom end, 4 tracks boosted by TV adverts, singing comps and stuff, all in the itunes charts. Only Solomon Burke has never charted before (a 1962 oldie featured in Dirty Dancing) and only Smooth has topped my charts before.

20th January 2019

It’s a first week on top for 1991 top 10 track Jealousy, a classic orchestral ballad that grows, and grows with time, and with prestige, for me. With such a vast quality back catalogue, it’s no surprise that reissues give me a chance to let under-appreciated gems from Pet Shop Boys do better, and this one deserved better at the time. In terms of decades, all-time faves, it’s Beatles for the 60’s, Abba for the 70’s, Pet Shop Boys for the 80’s, 90’s, 00’s and most likely the 10’s too, though it’s a bit early to judge yet, but I hear new music is on the way once the 2-year-tour is done (I saw it 3 times).

Tame Impala get a 4th top 10 and 6th top 20, Mercury Rev a 3rd top 10 18 years since the last one, Wicked games topped my chart in 1990 for Chris Issak and returns for REIGN to the top 10, and Mary Poppins pops in to my top 10. Superfragilisticexpialidocious! Highest new entry is Jack Savoretti, his 8th chart feature, and it’s a very welcome & unlikely return to The Specials (well, the Fun Boy Two plus a Special, really) for the first time in 34 years with new material, though Terry Hall chartered in the interim with Colourfield and topped my charts with The Lightning Seeds’ Sense in 1992, as well as Fun Boy Three’s Our Lips Are Sealed in 1983 and Special’s Ghost Town in 1981. Fun Boy Three had 2 hits with Bananarama, and kick-started their career, so it’s bizarre they also return this week after reuniting for a tour – and then just the 2 long-serving Keren and Sarah doing the new album yet again, sadly. The ‘Nanas have been away for 7 years, though they grabbed 7 21st century chart entries to add to their oodles in the 80’s and 90’s.

James Morrison has been MIA from my charts since 2011, but gets his 7th entry 8 years on, along with Joss Stone getting an 11th (ignoring charity combos) and her first since 2012. James has 13 years of charting, Joss 15 years and she’s barely over 30! Charlotte Gainsbourg gets a second chart entry – which is one more than her chart-topping parents ever managed! Je T’Aime! Carly Rae returns for a 6th on the list, and The Killers keep that run going with a political statement 15 years on from debut, and 14 years on from topping my chart. Brandon Flowers has topped more times solo, though, and they have a very long run of hits over a decade and a half.

13th January 2019

It’s a first week on top, and a first chart-topper for Chainsmokers, and also for Kelsea Ballerini. Having fallen short with all of their previous huge hits, they do with a track that is mysteriously not doing that well – I guess that Chainsmokers sound has been passed over now in favour of poppier stuff, which is a shame, cos it’s very good. Pet Shop Boys’ Jealousy (and also My October Symphony) charted last year in the UK albums on the revamp of Behaviour, and as neither version has previously charted, they do now that I’ve finally played the deluxe CD I bought then. This means Jealousy goes top 10 for the second time, the single orchestral version having previously done it in 1991, but never as high as the new peak of 3, one of their very first songs written in the early 80’s, it still sounds fab in concert.

The Love Affair never charted in 1968 for me – it was a few months too early for my charting starting – but it would very easily have been top 5, so better late than never! The new version of Wicked Games leaps into the 20, though she’s going to have to go some to top Chris Isaak’s 1990 chart-topper, and the Mary Poppins returns film intro shoots up to 16 cos it’s just fab. Tom Jones goes top 20 with that song for the 2nd time, Backstreet Boys get their biggest chart action since 2001 as No Place shoots into the 30, and highest new track comes from Lana Del Ray going all moody and interesting, just how I like her, at 29.

Calvin Harris & Rag’n’Bone Man do a collab that sounds good at 40, Westlife join the 90’s boybands clogging up my charts in a way I could never have predicted 20 years ago, with their first entry in 8 years and highest charting in a decade – not that they actually ever had that many chart high: 4 top 10’s and 2 other top 20’s is the current total, pretty much all the non-ballads. Halsey has finally entered my charts after slipping by me, despite being a huge worldwide hit, it has grown on me as I hear it here and there. Sam Smith is back, ditto The Weeknd, and sneaking in it’s The Seachers, a big band of the 60’s who just kept going and touring for 55 years while not ever troubling the singles chart beyond the 60’s, and only the occasional hits album package to keep them being noticed. Now they have finally called it a day and had anpther chart album to say goodvbye with – hits of course. When I was quite literally 6 years old and mad on pop chart hits and popstars, the record of theirs I was maddest on was Don’t Throw Your Love Away, a tuneful cover of an American Orlons B side. I loved, and still love, a good melody, as proven by spine-tingling swooning at some of Lloyd-Webber’s best in Phantom Of The Opera which I saw in London on saturday.

6th January 2019

It’s a 6th total week on top for the Carpenters, as the new year brings fresh music, fresh climbs, and oldies dropping, xmas songs exiting again. Camelphat get a 2nd top 10, Alan Walker joins himself in the top 10, his 4th, and Albin Lee Meldau his first. Mercury Rev get a 4th top 20, Monkees an umpteenth, depending on how EP’s count, and Robbie gets yet another top 20 as he also brings in a low-key lead track off his fansite only 3rd album. What with Take That, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys, it’s quite the 90’s boyband theme.

Andy Burrows is the highest new entry, he’s previously topped my chart twice, once with Razorlight, once with I Am Arrows, and gone top 10 solo a few times too. Tom Jones did a flawless off-the-cuff vocal performance on The Voice, with the son of Lonnie Donegan, writer of I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, Tom’s fab 1967 hit ballad – and has sold loads on itunes as a result. So an excuse to make my charts for the 3rd time then, as I loved it when I was 9 years old and I wasn’t quite charting at the time, or else it would have been 4th time round. Other oldies in: lead vocalist of Marmalade Dean Ford died this week, sadly, so Reflections Of My Life is also back, their best record of many minor gems, and also the Captain (Daryl Dragon) of Captain & Tennille has died, so Neil Sedaka’s 1976 song top 5 hit for them (in my charts and the USA, but not the UK) is back in.

A Chris Isaac moody cover is in for RAIGN, Backstreet Boys get a swift 2nd entry on their latest comeback, and Mary Poppins Returns with the 2 best songs from the new fab movie. It’s underperforming at the box office and charts, but I see a future children’s classic there.

My 1994 Charts – June

5th June 1994

No more World Music at the top, it’s grunge, or at least the advert-related version of it, which is pretty terrific anyway. Loved those crashing guitars in Stiltskin’s day Inside and astride the charts. Exciting stuff. Bad news for Guns ‘n’ Roses who get stuck at 2, their highest spot since topping 5 years earlier with Sweet Child ‘o’ Mine – it’s the highest charting version of Since I Don’t Have You though. Roxette recall their glory 1989 chart-topping days too as they Crash! at 4. Boom! Bang!

Blur’s glorious To The End up to 7 with a bullet, ahead of the Frampton reggae-tastic Big Mountain at 9, and Eddi Reader getting her biggest solo hit at 10, 6 years on since her last one (with Fairground Attraction). Dawn Penn also rockets to 21 with the fab reggae No No No. Yes Yes Yes! More reggae? How about highest new entry from Aswad, Shine catches them at their very poptastic best, and leaps Ace Of Base’s version of their Don’t Turn Around – which, essentially is also reggae-ish.

Non-reggae new stuff from Primal Scream at 33, Janet Jackson at 36, and lower-but-better The Prodigy’s fab No Good, Pulp’s Babies, and assorted Crowded House, Arrested Development and Pearl Jam tracks. Only one of those last 3 will be in next week’s charts…

12th June 1994

Blur knock off grunge from the top, their first chart-topper 5 years on from their debut, and what an epic track it is. To The End is pure tearful earnestness wrapped up in a gorgeous wrapping. Brilliant. Knocking on the Blur door, though Dawn Penn’s insistent stylish reggae is at 3, while Aswad’s pop sunny pop reggae just misses the 10. My chartnote says “hot weather at last” which means, I guess, a late summer, and a reason for reggae to feature big, so summer-sounding.

Pet Shop Boys Ab Fab semi-novelty pops up to 12 and saves it from becoming their lowest-placed single, ever. One peaked even lower, circa 1991! 2 Unlimited get another top 20 hit, Primal Scream ditto, and Aretha Franklin keeps a run of Top 20 hits spanning 26 years as Willing To Forgive leaps to 20 after pottering around the lower reaches.

Ace of Base at 22, The Prodigy at 24, Danii Minogue new at 29 (unexpectedly), and Tom Robinson looking Hard at 32 (17 years on from a motorway fling) all brighten up the Top 40 a bit. Chuck in another D:Ream hit, another Faster Manics hit, night-bound Pretenders at 44, and Huey Lewis sneaking in 11 years on, and most of the rest can be ignored. Note Wet Wet Wet drop without ever making the Top 20. Oops!

19th June 1994

2 weeks for Blur, and Roxette move into runners-up big ballad slot, which is fair enough as Blur is much better and they’ve had 3 number ones! Big Mountain take Baby I Love Your Way MUCH higher than anyone else, even Peter Frampton (though he also has had a previous number one, so no worries). Of more import, though 7 Seconds leaps to 9 after going up and down for weeks, and what a classic it is. Neneh Cherry fans may have given up hope of seeing her with a big hit again, 5 years on from her last one, but here she is with fab Youssou.

Tom Robinson’s jump to 12 is his biggest hit since War Babies in 1983. Gosh! That’s Hard. First mention for The Grid, here, as Swamp Thing makes it a Top 20 thang, and Pulp go Top 40. Newies? Let Loose, sounding (unsurprisingly) a bit Nik Kershaw-ey, catchy pop boyband, Gun cover Cameo as well as nicking the band name from Race With The Devil hitsters. Talk about unoriginal! Bonnie Raitt gets a hit, Elton John has a Lion King entry (and UK hit) at 60, the very sweet Can You Feel The Love Tonight, for 23 years of hits, while Alice Cooper gets a quick chart-entry follow-up for 22 years of hits. I’m nothing if not loyal to pop stars I like.

26th June 1994

In a beautiful case of poetic justice Aswad claim the number one spot with the great Shine, the week that the song they took to number one in the UK singles chart (but not mine) gets to 20 for Ace Of Base. Quite a bit of action at the top generally, too, as 7 Seconds claims runners-up, while The Boomtown Rats 15-year-old classic I Don’t Like Mondays enters at 3, trying to re-claim that number one spot.

Tom Robinson gets his 3rd Top 10 hit at 8, ahead of the great Nina Simone’s definitive version of Feelin’ Good, a classic that has never achieved the UK chart position it deserves, but enters at 9 in mine, 25 years after she had a number one in my chart with Ain’t Got No…I Got Life. Hey, when you’re right, you’re right…! The Pretenders add another Top 20 to the list, General Public (sort of bits of The Beat) come back with a cover of the Staple Singers number 3 hit from 1972, and grab a 23 hit out of it, their biggest. Bonnie Raitt also does the same at 27, while Yazz makes a comeback with a cover of the Korgis 1980 classic.

Others: Terrorvision, Utah Saints, Roachford, Cappella, Daryl Hall (and the Sounds Of Blackness), Spin Doctors Stevie Nicks (yay!) and a great follow-up single from Crash Test Dummies announces some coffeespoons in the afternoon at 75….
