My 2017 Charts Oct-Dec

P1080751
Salou, Spain, back to front
31st December 2017

It’s Aretha Franklin’s orchestral oldie on top, almost exactly 44 years since the gorgeous Stevie Wonder song first charted for me, and it’s been a week of oldies xmas invasions, as a refuge from the stress of having a father unexpectedly in hospital from xmas eve (and still there) while caring for a mother who needs help with everything. Lots of TV playlist oldies has created a nostalgic xmas chart invasion, belatedly, some of them having charted dozens of times before, some just a couple or a few times.

The Fizz make it 2 top 10’s with the christmassy Home For My Heart, and also give Rick Wakeman his first ever top 10 singles chart credit – though he was tinkling the ivories in my top 10 way back in the early 70’s on many records. Paloma gets a second top 10 of the year, Streets Of London incredibly makes my top 20 for the first ever time, criminal for such a great song! Joe Goddrad heavily samples a 70’s disco soul flop from Brainstorm, one I didn’t know at the time (or since) so I’ve given them credit, cos it’s great.

Buckingham McVie return for 5th track off the Mac-side-project album, Oh Wonder get a second chart single, Taylor Swift gets her first of the year, and Jose Feliciano’s xmas oldie finally charts – largely because I keep hearing it, having spent the best part of 45 years never having come across the 1970 track at all. Jose Feliciano had a top 10 fab hit with me in my first charting days in late 1968, with the Doors song, Light My Fire – a stylised version covered by Will Young more recently – and then…nothing. Never made my chart again, not even his current Jools Holland stuff. So, a new chart record – albeit with an oldie – for Jose, as his 49-year-drought comes to an end and he finally gets a follow-up.

24th December 2017

It’s Chris Rea on top, at long last, as he cancels his tour from ill health, but continues to have the most heart-warming annual christmas fave with his 1988 classic. The song made my top 10 then, and hit 4 in 1994, before hitting a new peak of 3 in 2007. All of them in years when the UK singles chart was unwelcoming to the song, to say the least. It finally makes the UK top 20 this week, and in celebration it not only makes my top 10 for the 7th time, it finally hits the top spot 29 years on. No record has charted so many times before topping my chart, nor had so many weeks on the chart before topping my chart.

Craig David gets his first top 10 since 2010, and his 5th in total, including 2 number ones (Hot Stuff in 2007 and Walking Away in 2000). The Partridge Family make my top 20 for the first time in 44 years, with an old album track, and the highest new entry is also an old Sister Sledge (Chic-produced) album track from 1980, one I’ve never heard before until Radio 2 played it for the surviving sisters talking about a new tour. Pretty Baby is much better than any of the singles off the album, and is therefore their best new entry on my chart since Lost In Music in 1979 (ignoring reissues and remixes).

Empire Of The Sun replace themselves in my chart, with a song containing “home” in it, very much the theme of the chart, on top, and new entries from Joe Goddard, a climber for The Fizz, someone ironic considering the charity new entry at 40 – Ralph McTell’s new version of his classic Streets Of London is in aid of the homeless, and it’s rather a good version, helped along by Annie Lennox. That’s Annie’s first chart credit here in 8 years, and Ralph’s first, cough, in 42 years. That’s one hell of an absence! Streets Of London was already a few years old when it charted at Christmas 1974, as was another oldie, Hey There Lonely Girl from Eddie Holman. Eddie hasn’t troubled my chart since, until now – purely because an oldie I was listening to on youtube ended and this track started up next, one from 1966 I’d never heard of. An instant retro fave for me and lovely to see Ralph & Eddie entering together 43 years since they last both hit my top 40.

17th December 2017

How Can I Be Sure is back on top for a second week for the late David Cassidy, just holding off the strings-laden soul classic Stevie Wonder song as done by Aretha Franklin, finally getting the chart peak it deserved first time round when it was battling Glam Rock classics, Cher, Wings & Barry White. I just turned sweet 16.

Tame Impala get a 3rd top 5, Roy Orbison gets his biggest of the year, and the RPO get 2 in the top 10. Steely Dan return to the top 10 42 years later, and Chris Rea gets a top 20 xmas classic return for the umpteenth time without ever topping my chart. Yes there’s a bit of a dearth of new material as Christmas takes over – though Kim Wilde gets a second christmas song in the chart some 38 years since the last one.

The Fizz enter the chart as the highest new entry, with assist from prog legend Rick Wakeman who was tinkling the ivories for Bowie and others over 45 years ago, and anyone who could have forseen a 2017 link-up with Bucks Fizz would be truly living in a world of alternate universes. It works though!

10th December 2017

It’s Sufjan Stevens at 1, getting his first chart-topper at long last over a decade since debuting (and me buying his Illinois album). I was listening to this gorgeous low-key classy ballad as I drove in London traffic heading home with snow gently falling. How very Christmassy! Almost Driving Home For Christmas (Hi Chris Rea yet again in my top 40), except for I’m flying to the Canaries tomorrow morning. An actual new Christmas song pops in for Gwen Stefani, helped by Blake Shelton, and a good jolly effort it is, giving Gwen 20 years of chart entries, no doubt about it!

Another Xmas classic returns 44 years on – Wizzard’s annual festive hit doesn’t usually chart due to over-familiarity. I was insanely mad on it in 1973, had the picture sleeve vinyl and Roy Wood was coming off 4 consecutive number ones in my chart, plus some pre-fating Wizzard, as was my teen hero aged 15/16. I got to see him in Basingstoke on Tuesday, probably 20 years on since I last saw. He can still put on a good show, even if he needs a hand with the song order these days. I’ve used that as an excuse to allow a quirky track that played as I walked into The Anvil venue, one off Boulders his first album that I played rather a lot.

Highest new entry, though, is another RPO classic combo, this time Aretha Franklin gets the treatment with her brilliant Stevie Wonder cover from 1974 – it very much underperformed in my charts in the January/February as Wizzard dropped down my charts from the top. Roy Wood knocked himself off the top, with solo hit song Forever, that never gets played these days – not even by Roy in concert.

Big climbs for Tame Impala, back in the top 10, and ditto Fall Out Boy. Finally, a debut for Ian Dury’s boy, so, Reasons To Be Cheerful there.

2nd December 2017

It’s a first week on top for the fab Amen, (Bucks) Fizz’ best record since Heart Of Stone or New Beginnings, possibly since My Camera Never Lies! It’s either their first number one (for the new bloke and the band under that name) or their 6th (for Cheryl and Mike) or a 5th (for Jay). Whatever, it’s been a gap of 31 years between chart-toppers with new material, so that’s pretty much up there with the longest gaps.

David Cassidy drops to 2 with his classic 1972 UK chart-topper, but climbs to 5 with his 1973 gorgeous I’m A Clown, which peaked at 3 originally for me. Another late fave, Glen Campbell hits 4 with his version of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now. Glen’s version is my fave version, though I love others too. I was 13 when I first loved it. I was 14 when I first loved Steely Dan’s Do It Again, and 13 when I loved The Partridge Family’s I Think I Love You. All my teen faves dying is so sad.

Cola is top 10, better late than never, Craig David & Bastille jointly outdo their recent solo stuff for me, on a track that I shouldn’t have liked on paper, but actually do! Best thing either has done in quite a while. Pet Shop Boys are in yet again, this time with a track I didn’t know off their recharting Fundamental unreleased or obscure tracks, Fugitive at 30. Clean Bandit and Tame Impala have big climbs, Nick Jonas is back, one of the few new entries that is actually new, and 2 Xmas oldies sneak in as the tinsel appears everywhere!

26th November 2017

It’s the sadly late David Cassidy belatedly topping my chart 45 years on with his best record, the fab version of The Young Rascals How Can I Be Sure topped the UK chart but was more modestly appreciated by me at the time. By 1987 I had loved it enough to top it in a live version, but the original remains the best and it was one of my “broken-heart turn to” tracks in the noughties, guaranteed to cry bucketloads to it. I loved The Partridge Family records as 13-year-old, and this track sums up his teen appeal to the girls: sensitive boy-next-door just looking for the right one. Teens couldn’t resist. In at 10, I’m A Clown is his other best solo record, with a sprinkling of others lower down the chart, though not I Think I Love You and his other 4 chart-toppers in my charts as they have had great chart runs already.

That’s bad news for Sufjan Stevens stuck at 2 again behind an oldie, but there are big climbs into the 20 for Cola and Phases. Fall Out Boy also bound into the 30, and Paloma Faith the 40, while U2 out-peak the previous single in one week on the chart already. Craig David’s chart revival has left me feeling unmoved until this joint Bastille record. Neither of them have been what you call chart fave regulars for me (though Craig has topped my chart), but I was persuaded by the Friday TV spot when his response to a nasty prank involving a fake mean-spirited granny was just so admirable. A man you can trust your granny with!

19th November 2017

It’s straight in at 1 for OMD’s best record, Maid Of Orleans peaked at 2 in my charts in 1982, but was still the star moment at the concert last week, so following a sort-of request to include it (Hi Simon!) it’s overdue getting to number one, as Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark make it an 8th time on top. It’s about Joan Of Arc, that old pop song cliche subject matter that everyone writes about all the time…

That means Sufjan Stevens gorgeous and touching gentle movie song is at 2 for now, as by contrast the exciting Written By Wolves packs it up to 4 and Led Zep’s hard rocking Immigrant Song is up to 7 – just behind The Fizz. I do enjoy being perverse in my music tastes laugh.gif Golden Slumbers is in twice – Elbow’s new cover, and advert song, pops in, but the short and very sweet original Abbey Road track is in at 24 – The final short track of the trilogy (really they are a medley) The End, entered my chart earlier in the year, so that only leaves Carry that Weight to go. As itunes doesn’t sell them together though, they don’t qualify, but The Beatles Golden Slumbers does as it has also made the UK sales chart.

Alma’s back, going through Phases as she pushes herself out the 40, Pnau shoot up into the 40 for the second time this year, followed closely by a subtle remix of the new Empire Of The Sun – Pnau’s partner-act, really – which I prefer to the single mix. Speaking of new mixes, or new versions, Yazoo are back again with a delicious 2017 version of Only You which should push it over a “million” in my sales soon – 1982 rules this week! – which slows it down and removes the blippety-blop synths which detract from the quality of the song.

Another Roy O track enters from his new album. Most of the classic oldies have already had good chart runs, but Blue Angel is a doo-wop 50’s styled delight that I’ve never really noticed before, but sounds quite lush with the LSO on hand. Katie Melua is back, well over a decade into her chart career, with Sting’s golden fields oldie, Fall Out Boy and Paloma Faith pop back fairly quickly with new ones, and an old Kate Bush album track, and Jeff Lynne’s live version of his 1980 chart-topper (minus luvverly Livvie) sneaks in.

5th November 2017

It’s Tears For Fears shooting up to 1, the melody finally got through to me today, fab and Roland & Curt’s 4th chart-topper, Mad World, Everybody Wants To Rule The World (3 times) and Sowing The Seeds Of Love being the others. That’s bad news for Bucks Fizz who were out of nowhere and the highest new entry – OK, The Fizz if we want to be picky – in at 2 with the great 80’s pop sound of Amen, fighting for their 6th chart-topper a whole 31 years since the last one, and 29 years since they last made the top 10. Who woulda thought it!?

I do like stats. Led Zep make the top 10 for the 3rd time, all of them long after they stopped existing at a recording unit, Whole Lotta Love hit 10 in 1997, Stairway To heaven topped my chart in 2007, and very neatly Immigrant Song makes it a satisfying decade later for a number 8. 2027 for the next one? How about a stat like…ooh, Sufjan Stevens has had just the one chart entry, Chicago in 2006 which peaked at 10 – well he equals that right off the bat 11 years on with a movie theme tune, the lovely Mystery Of Love. Number 10 next in 2028?

RUFUS is the highest newish act at 21, while Written By Wolves bring some more rock into the chart, culpriit revisit Nu-Shuz I Can’t Wait as a backdrop and nick another melody for a fab pop record, while Rita Ora is back after a gap – most of her recent hits have left me unimpressed, but this one has a proper hook in amongst the obligatory 2017 squiggly computer noises. Meanwhile, actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg enters at 54 with a very credible dance track, debuting at the age of 46, and may well be the longest wait ever between pop stars having a hit (naughty Je Ta’ime..Moi Non Plus topped my charts in January 1975 for her parents Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin) and a daughter entering my charts. She was 4 at the time. There’s still time for Sean Lennon to take that record – his parents topped my chart in 1969, just before Charlotte’s topped the UK chart.

29th October 2017

Even later than usual this week, life is so manic I barely have time to breathe. Anyway Hurts get a second chart-topper in 3 weeks with the lovely sultry Wait Up, it’s their 4th in total. Pet Shop Boys, the other prolific duo in my chart, go to 3 with the tropical laid-back gorgeousness of Between Two Islands. The tracks they didn’t put on the Release album would have made a much more satisfying (if very varied) album than the actual sparse laid-back album itself.

Another duo have a big climb – Tears For Fears get a first top 20 hit with new material in 12 years, and stretch over 35 years. Highest new entry is a debut for classic album track Immigrant Song, Led Zep’s banger that has never been a single, but is now featured strongly in Thor: Ragnarok to great effect and now belatedly charts here for a rare Led Zep single entry (they didn’t release singles so they never qualified until I changed my rules). Marlon Roudette is back with another goodie, at 18, and Noel Gallagher pushes out his kid brother from my chart with his Mott The Hoople-ish glamstomper (It’s very The Golden Age Of Rock ‘n’ Roll crossed with Rocky Martin’s She Bangs).

Matt maltese debuts with a haunting track, as does Rex Orange County with a sweet one, and Elkie Brooks returns with another 2017 entry and 40 years on from Sunshine After The Rain going top 10.

Evangeline finally gets on top, holding off another Hurts challenger, the soulful Wait Up. My Kingdom was entered into Buzzjack Song Contest 98 and failed to make the final. I wasn’t in that semi, sadly, cos I don’t know what substances everyone was one to ignore this brilliant track, the sexiest track of the year – that’s sexy tingly passion not rapper “sexy” sweary-naughty-words which are not remotely sexy or passionate. This one builds, a great melody, a convincing vocal to match the tastefully passionate lyrics, and then that driving beat getting louder with rising passions right through to the “drop” as I believe the youngsters call it, and frenzied electrobeats. Perfectly constructed. Obviously all too young to know what it’s about laugh.gif

Sparks shoot up into the top 10 with Edith Piaf. That’s the song, not a duet with a French ghost chanteuse. That gives the boys 43 years of top 10’s and around about a dozen at least to date, I reckon, probably more, with another cantering a bit lower with the Macbeths, reality TV stylee. Class! Pet Shop Boys get another top 10 with a non-charted oldie, we are really closing in on 70 or 80 top 10’s for that UK duo, the biggest by far outpacing the US nearest version – Sparks.

There’s a load of new entries following the George Michael TV show (which I haven’t seen yet) as they all charted in the sales chart, so they may yet go up when I watch it. Another UK duo are also back – it’s OMD, and I think they may must be the 2nd biggest duo in my charts of all-time. Can’t think of any other that would rival, barring Erasure, but OMD have 5 years start on them.

15th October 2017

3 weeks for Hurts on top, as they challenge themselves with the soulful Wait Up up to 3, and a massive leap for Burak Yeter up 30 spots to 7. Hurts new album has peaked at 21 in the UK chart which is ludicrously low for such a great band. Two Pet Shop Boys from the recharting extended Release CD set, both I already knew but hadn’t charted before, dating from 2002-4-ish. The album excluded any (much better) tracks that didn’t fit into the mood, including these two gems, one latin-tinged, one banger singalong.

Two new revamped tracks a la Elvis for Roy Orbison gives us 2 late lamented Traveling Wilburys in the chart, as well as the band itself. Love Hurts has been much-covered over the years (Nazereth and Jim Capaldi for two hit versions, for a start) so about time Roy charted his original. Chaka Khan gets a credit, which allows me to claim her charting in my charts for 43 years, starting with Rufus’ Tell Me Something Good in 1974.

8th October 2017

It’s 2 weeks weeks on top for the fabulous almost-festive singalong ballad from Hurts (MUST be a December single surely!?), followed closely by the fab Evangeline pumping dance single, My Kingdom. Hurts hold at 3, and rise to 6 with the Prince-flavoured Wait Up for half of the top 6! Two dance bangers enter the top 10, and Sophie Tucker hits 12, sorry I mean Sofi Tukker. Force of habit for old folk.

In at 24, highest new entry is the 2004 track featured in the new Kingsman film to great effect – Cameo’s Word Up done hillbilly style by a German country covers band, The BossHoss. Fun! P!nk leapfrogs herself as Beautiful Trauma jaunts into the 30, and Burak Yeter & Ryan Ribak enter into the 40. Following the sad death of Tom Petty there are a sprinkling of Wilburys and Heartbreakers tracks entering. It was 40 years ago that Tom debuted in my chart, so it’s nice to see a selection back for a nice bloke.

Morrissey is also back 34 years on from This Charming Man, and it’s a good offering too, while Motiv8 and Angie Brown finally get a second week on my chart – 23 years after peaking at 75. Maybe I was out the country at the time, or maybe I was getting fed up with jaunty piano house tunes dominating the charts, but it’s decent and deserved better.

1st October 2017

It’s Hurts in at 1 from nowhere – I hadn’t heard it before today when I checked out the new album, which looks pretty good, but has 2 fab future singles (I hope) and 2 current singles. Magnificent is another showstopping power ballad from the lads, fab and knocks off Footsteps from the top. Here’s hoping they make it the next single (as Pet Shop Boys should have done with Footsteps). In at 3 it’s the single proper, and Ready To Go is the upbeat current Radio 2 playlist single for Hurts. That leaves the Prince-inspired funk of Wait Up in at 17, with a great hook. 3 instant top 20 tracks.

Martin Solveig and Alma have a good climb, into the 20, as Sparks add a top 20 to their 43-year-long list of them. Sofi Tukker, the US duo, have a massive climb into the 30 with an unusual upbeat track, while the highest non-Hurts track to enter is from ARLE, both a district of Cheltenham and a new moody dance banger. P!nk has a quick follow up Beautiful Trauma as her current biggie is yet to drop much, as does Jaira Burns grabbing a quick second entry. Brighton band The RPM’s round out the new stuff.

My 1990 Charts – May

Florida

I had two holidays here (Florida) that year…

1990 videos included here…

6th May 1990

Yet another new one weeker as Jane Child brings her US hit into the UK charts in a minor way, but as Florida holiday memory it sounded great to me, Don’t Wanna Fall In Love. Adamski and Seal shoot up to 3 with a Killer of a tune, Heart sneak up to 4, and UB40 get 10 years of top 5 entries. Bros’ career is in it’s dying throws, but reach a peak on my charts as the rather decent Madly In Love hits 8, and Faith No More just miss out on the top 10, From Out Of Nowhere.

Dirty Cash enters the top 20, as Kylie prefers the Devil she knows and rockets up to 18 in no time at all, and The Bee Gees have their Bodyguard assist them to 20. Into the 40, Chris Rea drives from Texas, the B52’s Roam on back to re-enter at 31 as their Love Shack falls down to 32, and Beats International cover Norman Cook (how convenient!) and then Won’t Talk About It. How rude!

Highest new entry is Dusty Springfield and the fab Reputation at 46 – not Pet Shop Boys this time, but a good single from a terrific new album. Gloria Estefan, like Dusty, is following up some number ones, and drops by at 48, as it Cuts Both Ways. Marc Almond thinks on The Desperate Hours as he clocks in at 53, for 9 years of chart success, and Phil Collins is on his way to Heaven at 56 for an even longer 9 year run if you count Genesis – then it’ll be 16 years since I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe). Fleetwood Mac are in at 59 with Save Me, and that’ll be 14 years of the classic Mac line-up, or 22 years if you count Albatross. Which I do. At 75, Depeche Mode keep the resurgence strong as Policy Of Truth keeps the run running at 9 years. 1981 was a busy year for new acts….!

At work, I was doing overtime to try and meet deadlines preparing tendering contracts, and that meant surveying parks and gardens, drawing up plans and measuring areas. No pressure no stress…not. Played squash. Lost. The weather continued to be scorching, and we had a work jolly to Bristol for contracts work-stuff conference, where I bumped into John, our ex-team-mate now back in Wales. It was great to see him again, and catch up for long chat over dinner, and to meet the interesting people on the course all preparing for monitoring roles in local government.

I took my mum to see Glen Campbell Live In Concert on Saturday 4th May at Bournemouth Pavilion, as Glen commented the town was swarming with Leeds United drunken rioting fans. Not the welcome he was expecting! Glen was witty and engaging as ever, and in the middle of a career lull really, but he had the back catalogue and nostalgia from me for his fantastic back catalogue from when I was a huge pre-teen fan of his. He promptly went into them all, Wichita Lineman through Rhinestone Cowboy leaving the second half for some obscure country stuff, enlivened by the track that caused his split with Capitol records, Highwayman. Worse, he then did a batch of covers of other peoples songs, even having bagpipes for Mull Of Kintyre (Scottish roots of course). His guitar playing impressed throughout, but his backing band were a bit pedestrian, and his choice of material suspect. I count my blessings I caught him again 15 and 20 years later when he was suffering from alzheimer’s and promoting fantastic new material as well as the re-born classics, it was a very different experience.

Just to be greedy I had another concert: Heart Live at Bournemouth International Centre 5th May 1990 (with Thunder). Bob, Jason and I went into Thunder, who had a classic rock Led Zep/Free groove to them which came over very well, I thought, despite a lack of great songs. “I think they could be big” I opined. Well, they did do well in the 90’s as it turned out, if not quite Big. Heart, sadly were pretty dull for 45 minutes, suffering from the usual pop star curse: “let’s plug the new album and get the audience to pay us to hear it”. If you have a great new album this can be electric, if you have a plodding new album, it tends to be yawnsome. The last half hour had all the big hits, though, so the saving grace was encore tracks Never and What About Love, and great singles Alone, All I Wanna Do and These Dreams. I felt the band were just going through the pedestrian motions though, overall, despite liking the Wilson sisters a lot.

13th May 1990

Killer is on top, Adamski and the very unfairly uncredited Seal – at least until he re-recorded his own (less-good) version. One of the classic tracks of 1990, without doubt, it still sounds fresh and throbbingly exciting, and Seal’s vocals are fantastic. Adamski never really managed a career, but happily Seal had some classic stuff ahead. Shooting up to 3 it’s Chris Rea’s highest charting record, Texas (and one of his very minor hits) which had a widescreen twangy guitar charm for me, though since overtaken in my affections by Tell Me There’s A Heaven and Driving Home For Christmas. The fabulous Ghetto Heaven and even more fabulous Dirty Cash (Money Talks) bot go top 10, and Beats International top 20.

David Grant, Michael Bolton, Billy Idol and Gloria Estefan all make a break for the 40, as the highest new entry is from Sam Brown at 35, back hoping someone will meet her at the Kissing Gate. How very rural, how very sweet. The Pasadenas are also back with a Love Thing at 57, while the even more funky En Vogue debut at 74 with Hold On. That leaves last week’s in concert band Thunder sneaking in with Back Street Symphony at 65, and Betty Boo debuting at 63 with the very fun-tastic Doin’ The Do. Had copyright not been an issue she would have had an extra, more credible, “p” to hang on at the end of the Boo. Betty Boop is still selling, bizarrely, considering the ancient cartoons haven’t been seen in decades anywhere, especially in Universal Studios Theme Parks merchandise.

Working on the Bank Holiday Monday, and then the deadline pressures eased, with relief for a relatively mellow week at work. The hot weather ended, and on TV I was watching MASH, Dallas, The Comic Strip Presents, I Love Lucy, Top Of The Pops, Cheers, LA Law, The Invaders and Get Smart. My music charts were diverting quite a bit from the UK singles chart, as I was still much in USA Florida music mode.

20th May 1990

Another week another new chart-topper, this time it’s Wilson Phillips great Hold On, a very Californian-sounding ballad in the tradition of their musical families, and one which had a new lease of life in recent years thanks to hit comedy movie Bridesmaids. My charts were still absolutely dominated by Florida-holiday hits bringing back fond recent memories, but also just because the US pop music scene was more to my taste than the more one-off faceless dance acts that were making UK chart inroads. Kylie’s classic Better The Devil You Know goes top 5, and single-handedly changed my overall opinion of Kylie, now more saucy, and with better songs, starting to look more long-term than her previous pre-teen appeal had suggested.

Beats International make it 2 top 10’s in a row, and Janet Jackson gets another to add to her total, as Alright keeps the rhythm nation dancing. Highest new entry at 12 is previous minor 1984 hit It’s My Life from Talk Talk, now sounding much more substantial in the 1990 music scene, and just keeping ahead of Dusty Springfield’s reputation – which is pretty high! The B52’s Roam at last goes top 20 again, while Michael Bolton also hits the 20 – one I conveniently mis-remembered liking that much. How Can We Be Lovers? Get a haircut and stop shouting, for a start…! The Pasadenas and Depeche Mode both hit top 40 under the new policy of truth, while another great film hit pops in – Roxette’s It Must Have Been Love enters at 34, from Pretty Woman. At 35, Propaganda are Claudia-less, and the Kim Wilde-alike replacement singer for Heaven Give Me Words is fine, though they should have called it Turn To Stone as that’s the track I was searching for weeks for, after hearing it on Florida radio. Found it in the end.

At 43, The Chimes debut with a fantastic cover of U2’s I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, all soulful and slowed, with a great vocal by soon-to-be-solo singer Pauline Henry, and at 44 Erasure have a Star. Blow Monkeys also return with a new song, Springtime For The World, a positive sound and message (equality, gay and otherwise) which didn’t quite register, the band also need more youtube hits I say, under-rated. At 62 the terrific blues-revival wailing guitar sounds of Gary Moore, who’s Still Got The Blues 11 years on from his Parisenne Walkway, and finally Black Box are Everybody at 66, while Joan Armatrading states there’s more than one kind of love (oh yes there is) at 74 14 years since she showed us her marvelous love and affection.

At work Chris left, as everyone found out he’d be going out with Cathy for some time. The leaving do was in Pumphreys, work colleagues all present, plus Lucy came back from Christchurch Council for the evening drinks, great to see her. The music got louder, the fag smoke gave me a sore throat and so I left at 10, everyone else very merry by then, or left. On saturday I rather naughtily caught some baby river fish fry from the River Stour in a jar and took them home for my pond – not at all suitable for ponds, and they got rather large rather quickly, till they started trying to exit the pond when grown up and the remainder got eaten by a bast*rd heron along with my mature goldfish a few years later. I watched The Thin Man and The Cat And The Canary, classic old Hollywood movies you never see on TV anymore. Modern kids can’t handle black and white movies, apparently. Sod ‘em, I say they’re great films.

27th May 1990

The revolving door on top keeps spinning as the first 80’s oldie to top my chart in the 90’s hits the top spot 6 years late, Talk Talk’s fab It’s My Life has a climb from 14 as it becomes a bigger UK singles chart hit than it was in 1984. Kylie hits 4 and a new to-date best chart peak for Kylie, apart from the Jason Donovan duet Especially For You which hit 2. Dusty gets a 4th top 10 in a row, and 6th in total since 1968, her reputation improves with age. B52’s roam up to 10, too, their second top 10 of the year and third in total in 11 years of chart entries.

Depeche make it 3 top 20’s in a row, 4 if you count Personal Jesus having 2 chart runs, while highest new entry is in at 16 for Was (Not Was), back with a new soulful lead singer, and their 3rd top 20 in 6 years with The Temptations classic Papa Was A Rolling Stone, only 3 years since it was a dance remixed top 10 for the Temps, more of the template for this funked reworking than the original epic soul ballad version. Talking of covers, Don Pablo’s Animals sort of cover Shocking Blue’s Venus instrumental riff dance stylee at 17, after entering at 39 last week.

Into the 40 goes Gary Moore, Betty Boo, The Chimes, Erasure and En Vogue, while new at 55 it’s New Order and some England Football Squad rap and vocal interjections. Despite that World In Motion is still one of the best football World Cup records. Not that there was a lot of competition prior to this one, but this one opened up the pop floodgates for the obligatory World Cup popstar/football crossovers every 4 years. At 58 Debbie Harry’s back again, Maybe For Sure, 9 years of solo chart entries and 12 with Blondie, while at 64 a classical sample from Erik Satie’s 19th century Les Trois Gymnopedies, an ambient music pioneer, is apparently the basis for Movement 98 (that’s the bpm) and a soulgroove fusion Joy And Heartbreak.

In at 65 the brilliant The Only One I Know from The Charlatans, one of the key tracks of the growing indie band scene, or Madchester, or whatever label was applied it was a great 60’s retro organ-flavoured poprock shuffle. In at 70, follow to a quirky Birdhouse, the equally quirky history lesson from They Might Be Giants, Istanbul (Not Constantinople). I love whimsy, it’s under-rated. At 71, Stevie Wonder’s Until You Come Back To Me gets yet another cover, from Miki Howard, but none will ever beat Aretha’s. Finally a couple of minor follow-up’s from Mantronix and New Kids On The Block nip in briefly for a week in the 70’s.

I was having car problems, my Metro was only a few years old but they stopped producing them once everyone realised they were crap and went rusty at the drop of a hat. On the plus side, Radio One went FM, it was Ab Fab being able to listen to current music without it fading in and out, and sounding generally rubbish. It only took the BBC 23 years to get round to it, no need to rush, 23 years isn’t a long time when you’re 9 years old is it? I played Peter at Badminton for a change, and I actually won. Shock!

4th february 1990

3 weeks for Cher on top, as the great Lisa Stansfield hits 3, and fabulous Sinead 4. The wonderful under-rated House Of Love’s Shine On gleams at 8, brightening up the top 10, and Hello! So do The Beloved, at 10, and a trio of veterans, Ray, Chaka and Quincy at 9. Leaving the highest new entry at 13 for a less-good but similar-sounding Technotronic follow-up, only this time Ya Kid K gets the justly-deserved featuring credit, not a model pretending to be her.

At 16, Chris Rea enters with a lush, cinematic, heart-breaking gentle song. If you’ve never heard Tell Me There’s A Heaven, click on the Youtube link and pay attention to the words, essentially a child dealing with death. It’s tender and affecting, and just plain gorgeously sad. Pure class. As is Paul McCartney’s under-stated up-beat ballad Put It There, up 35 spots to 14. Sybil, meanwhile Walks On By into the 20, Driving past Everything But The Girl and Janet Jackson.

Lloyd Cole goes Top 30, and Madonna enters at 35 with one of the best tracks on Like A Prayer, another lushly-orchestrated and sad-themed bit of class, Oh Father. Not a UK single until 1996, it was out in the USA in 1989 instead of Dear Jessie, and didn’t make the Top 10 in either country, sadly. Cos it’s fab. At 39, it’s a new return from Gilbert O’Sullivan, 20 years since debuting, in a contemporary dance stylee – pushed out on a white label to DJ’s with no artist credit, I think, which gave him a buzz he hadn’t had since 1972/3. It’s one of his best records, actually, and has a great video with the late lovely long-time comic actor Eric Sykes lending a hand. Gilbert changed the music biz the next year when he sued and won a case against Biz Markie for sampling Alone Again (Naturally) – since then people rightly pay for sampling.

Barry Manilow’s at 50 with Elvis’ 1969 Top 10 huge ballad, If I Can Dream, giving Bazza 15 years of covering other people’s songs. Another cover, from Tina Turner, at 56, as she brings Tony Joe’s bluesy swamprock great Steamy Windows into the charts but keeps the feel just right. One of her best solo records too. Fab. At 60, Faith No More enter with the raprocking Epic, a terrific blend of the genres, insistent and exciting. Seduction’s good US girl dance hit Two To Make It Right enters at 62, The Stranglers cover ? And The Mysterions (pronounced Question Mark!) the delightfully organtastic odd 1966 hit 96 Tears, and do it very well. Cliff’s at 69, though he’s Stronger Than That, while 5 years since his last hit Adam Ant’s got a room at the top, but it’s located at the bottom – 75.

At work, there was lots of storm tree damage and lots of inspecting of parks and open spaces to do, having to make decisions on which trees needed attention which was a bit daunting. Got some good photos of fallen trees in the woods round and about home, and took the kids to look at them. Even more gales and storms made it a busy time! This was one of those “once in a generation” storm events that was actually the second time in 3 years. Played squash with Peter (lost of course)and a good chat after, popped round Bob’s for a chat, and watched a lot of TV: Chelmsford 123, Cheers, Whose Line Is It Anyway, Golden Girls, TOTP etc.

11th February 1990

Straight in at number 1, it’s the single release of an album track I already loved (bought the album in the States Autumn 1989) Here We Are, Gloria Estefan’s second chart-topper. I really did like her a lot, nice singer, lovely person, and was very happy to see Latino music get a big push through her and hubby Emilio’s Miami Sound Machine, 6 years on since Doctor Beat. It’s a sweetly sad ballad. Lonnie Gordon takes SAW back into the 10, and Rod Stewart gets his biggest hit in 6 years or so, as Downtown Train hits 8, just ahead of Sybil (Basil!) and Macca. Put It There, Paul!

Lloyd Cole returns to the 20 after a 3-year gap, No Blue Skies is another good ballad, so many of them dotted around the chart! Beats International rocket to 19, as Dub Be Good To Me gives Norman Cook his biggest post-Housemartins track, chasing the position of the SOS Band original. Seduction slide sultrily into the 40, showing it takes two to make it right at 23, and Depeche Mode’s classic Enjoy The Silence is right behind at 24, quietly working their way up. More loudly, Faith No More’s Epic is 26. Tina’s getting steamy at 38, as windows do when you get sweaty.

Next new entry is a 1990 dance remix of classic 1977 rock hit Black Betty, from Ram Jam at 31, ahead of Tears For Fears’ good Advice For The Young At Heart. I think I followed that advice, at 33, and also did a bit of gardening as Lenny Kravitz enters at 37, I Built This Garden For Us, bringing him chart-bound not for the last-time. I’m Not Satisfied, exclaim the Fine Young Cannibals, oh well, says I, noting they are in at 53 and have a decade of hits (with The Beat), and move on to Marc Almond’s A Lover Spurned, all drama at 61, 9 years on since Tainted Love. At 65, a great rock new entry from Aerosmith, who rightly warn us that Janie’s Got A Gun, and finally Spandau Ballet do a spot of crashing into love at 75. More like a very slight bump, actually.

At home, big Bob (driver from work of 5 years back) and his new girlfriend dropped by, and overlapped into the chart show, oops! Nice to catch up on news, and to see him get a girl after years of good-natured trying. More gales, rain, flooding, as we got measuring at work, for plans for a big Council reorganisation, the first of millions I’ve gone through since. Every new administration or leader likes to stamp their authority by changing things, cutting things, finding it backfires, doesn’t save money, and then hire in expensive temps to do the work that cheaper pissed-off staff used to do. It’s endlessly circular because the councillors who make these sort of decisions are not experts, largely they are morons with a vision who fail to listen to people who know better. I digress, 5-year-old Gavin was sick over mum’s bed, I watched TV Horizon shows on Neptune and Triton, as more and more images and knowledge of the planets gripped my imagination. I cancelled a works ice-skating evening due to apathy from confirmees changing their minds. Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison, giving some brightness and optimism to a world where injustice seemed to rule. I swore at the previous South African regimes, at this point, so I won’t repeat, but optimistically noted “Thatcher to go must be a possibility now”. When you’re right, you’re right….

18th February 1990

2 weeks for Gloria, here we are… as Lisa Stansfield almost gets a second number one – doh! Ram Jam bring up the spirit of ’77 as Black Betty goes top 5 for the second time, the remix admittedly not as good as the original, but good enough for 3. Paul McCartney is on a top 5 roll, as the third track from Flowers In The Dirt goes top 5, all of them under-appreciated in the world at large. Pah! Depeche Mode are also on a roll, a second consecutive top 10, Enjoy The Silence giving them a bit of consistency of chart position unseen since 1984, and their 10th top 10.

Faith No More hit 13, Gilbert O’Sullivan hits 14, his highest-ranked since 1974. So what? Well, a 16-year gap, that’s what. Back at 19, having been a less big chart hit in 1989, suddenly Love Shack takes off in the UK (hooray!) and gives The B52’s their first top 20 since the reissue of Rock Lobster in 1985, and 11 years of chart activity. It’s a party classic, still, but took some time to grow on everyone. Fine Young Cannibals are unsatisfied with their final record of note, more or less – they pretty much split at the top of their game, shockingly.

The Stranglers 96 Tears don’t dampen by appreciation of a good cover version, it suited them perfectly at 27, and Black Box come back with a new single – I don’y know anybody else either. 3 veterans scrape inside the 40: Cliff, Marc and Adam, but not their finest hours, truth be told, my preference these days is for A Lover Spurned of the 3. Leaving Kate Bush, Love And Anger, and The Creatures, Billy Fury Eyes as new entries – OK I”m just wishful thinking The Creatures had called it that, and done a 60’s styled version instead of opting for the dance sound of the time, which has dated badly.

A flat tyre to sort for my car, a room shift about at work, lost at squash 4-2, then chatted to Peter afterwards about his life, and at home caught a new TV show, Quantum Leap, which promised much with it’s premise of being sent back in time as other people. The BRITS were on, and I went to see Honey I Shrunk The Kids at the new impressive UCI cinema at the new Tower Park, Rick Moranis and Matt Frewer I enjoyed, good-humoured movie too, but some stupid plotting made it a bit too silly.

25th February 1990

The second album track to enter at 1 in a row – this time off the Pet Shop Boys-produced fabulous Results album, for Liza Minelli, it’s her version of Yvonne Elliman’s 70’s disco classic Love Pains. Yvonne is still waiting to chart with it, as it was one that bypassed radio of the time, clubs only, so I never got to hear the song until Hazell Dean covered it, and charted in the mid-80’s. Needless to say, it’s Liza, it’s Chris n Neil, it’s a great song, it’s fab. Also, a big huge new entry at 4 for Erasure, the beautifully melodic Blue Savannah, their best track since Sometimes hit 1 in 1986, and hot on the heels of Depeche Mode shooting up to 2 with the sublime Enjoy The Silence for their biggest chart hit to date.

Beats International take Just (Dub) Be Good To Me into the top 10, just as did the SOS Band in 1984, while Tina Turner cracks another top tenner with Steamy Windows, and Chris Rea gets only his 3rd or 4th in 12 years with his best record, Tell Me There’s A Heaven. In at 22, it’s Aerosmith with their best record, the immensely exciting and horn-ey Dude (Looks Like A Lady) – watch the video right to the end, it’s just sooo great. Into the top 40, Electribe 101 get cool dance vibes blending with a snatch of Mission: Impossible’s TV theme tune, laid back, smokin’. Kate Bush also gets top 40 bound, just behind a cover of Lou Reid’s 1973 classic Walk On The Wild Side. Which leaves minor entries for 80’s acts, Shaky, Carmel, It Bites and Brother Beyond, and a great buzzing dance track, so good it was remixed and big all over again in the 21st century, Guru Josh’ Infinity. Time For The Guru!

Spandau Ballet Live At Bournemouth International Centre 22nd February 1990

The audience were now averaging mid-20’s, 10-years on from starting their run of hits, Bob’s fave band of the 80’s, I’d seen Spandau before despite not being much of a fan, as Bob went to see Pet Shop Boys and I went to see Spandau, covering each other’s faves. Not much to say, it says in my notes, as they got off to a good start with Raw and Highly Strung before descending into the usual Pop Star Live Disease. Yes, that means sitting through a 45-minute advert for the latest album. This can work out well if it’s a classic album. Sadly, when it’s dreary it kills the mood stone-dead, nil audience participation, and so mundane. Gold livened things up a bit, but still a slowed-down version, and Through The Barricades was the highlight of the concert, only rivalled by the encore songs: To Cut A Long Story Short, and Chant Number 1. They also did True. Never mind.

My brother paid a rare visit for this time, having relationship and financial issues, with stuff he’d taken from grandma’s flat following a visit to her partner Jack, mainly sentimental stuff we’d given her, like Singapore cushion covers. I regretted not taking all of the stuff she’d badgered me to take for a couple of years, as it meant a lot to her, but I didn’t want to admit to myself she was getting to the age where she might pass away, and put it off. At the weekend, both niece Vicki and nephew Gavin were sick, Gavin throwing up in the middle of the night, and I decided my small bedroom was full up with stuff. 30-years on, I’ve spilled out into 2 other rooms, and they are all full to brimming. Mostly music, magazines, books…

4th December 1994

2 weeks for Kylie on top as the christmas new entries (actual NEW christmas songs) keep a coming, but the biggest challenger is in at 2 for Cliff’s double A side. Actually, not so much a double A side as a new Everly Brothers cover piggy-backing on the brilliant breathy 1976 single that changed everything for Cliff, and started off a run of credibility that lasted about 10 years. The gorgeous Miss You Nights was under-appreciated by me first time round, but justice is served and it’s in at 2. 26 years of big hits and counting…

The big news is Mariah Carey, generally a shrieking harpy with no subtlety to speak of, manages to add to her short list of great hits (Fantasy, Dreamlover) with a 3rd self-written retro instantly classic-sounding christmas song as All I Want For Christmas enters at 19. Of course, once downloads started counting towards charts it became an annual visitor to the top 20 charts in the UK (and the US top 50), and hearing it endlessly for 20 years without relief for one single christmas has rubbed some of the charm off, but it is a bonafide christmas classic.

The other xmas song is Bon Jovi’s bloated version of Please Come Home For Christmas at 47, thanks mostly to the great song, cos I will take both the original 1959 Charles Brown original or the 1979 Eagles cover over this much more famous version. Jon Bon Jovi, despite being a handsome devil, and having got backstage at a live gig in Bournemouth, tends to sound as if he’s straining too much, and that can only lead to hemorrhoids! Talking of piles, Rednex pop in with some Scandinavian hee-haw country pop, Cotton Eye Joe getting the dance treatment, and it IS genuinely intentionally funny, not to mention catchy, so I forgive it and love it. Even though I know I shouldn’t.

At 28, the Human League are back with an on-form bang with Tell Me When 4 years since they last had a minor UK hit (and number 2 popchartfreak hit) and 14 years since first charting with a Gary Glitter cover. A new boyband cover an old boyband, fortunately the Johnny Bristol song is strong enough to cope with the less-good cover and it enters at 29 for Boyzone, actually already outdoing the original Osmonds version of Love Me For A Reason, which is one I sniffed my nose at in 1974 when I was too cool for boybands anymore, but which is actually harmonically and melodically pretty damn fine.

At 31 it’s Elkie Brooks. Actually it’s her 1977 hit song butchered and repeated rather a lot, a template for some modern dance pop hits which avoid superfluous choruses, lyrics, vocals and bridges at all costs, and bung in a crap quick rap instead and add little else of much interest. Not against that in principle, just when it’s done badly. This one’s not bad. Another soul boyband return, BoyzIImen at 37. On bended knee, they were starting to sound a bit samey by now and it was wearing thin. To be honest it was pretty thin to begin with, despite a number one with End Of The Road and a couple of other good Top 10 singles. After the record-breaking (for tediousness) run forever atop the US singles chart Hot 100 in 1994 all they needed was months on top with Mariah Carey warbling away in duet to make me loathe them. Happily I’m sure neither party would be that cruel would they?

Others: a genre-varied bunch of new entries actually; grungy Pearl Jam, Under The Bridge Chili Pepper cover from The Flying Pickets, back after 11 years (!!), Youssou N’Dour, Carter, Bomb The Bass and Robert Palmer. And C.J. Lewis. Try and find a unifying theme there, I challenge it!

11th December 1994

3 weeks for Kylie on top in slow-moving pre-xmas chart. Mariah shoots up to 4 and Celine to 6, both future actual Million sellers in the UK, while 2wo third3 and their annoyingly jumbled name rocket up to 9 from a quiet 42 new entry with I Want To Alone. Ooooh Greta Garbo getyouuuu. It’s campy ’94-sounding dancepop with 80’s roots, not bad. Bon Jovi meanwhile warble up to 19 about coming home for christmas.

The Stone Roses and The Rolling Stones both go top 40, while a mellow Bomb The Bass take their reggae Dark Heart to 27, and Robert Palmer has 16 years of chart hits at 37, really? You blow me away! Youssou N’Dour meanwhile hooks up with Neneh Cherry again, and throws in Deep Forest into the bargain, though I remain Undecided at 46. Need I mention The Power Rangers? Good, thought not. 50. Mike Oldfield sneaks in with a bit of new age at 74, Hibernaculum, giving him a cool 20 years of hits since Tubular Bells hit my number one spot, the only album to qualify for my singles charts, apart from Hergest Ridge. Also Oldfield.

18th December 1994

Cliff’s 1976 classic finally gets to the top 18 years late, but then Miss You Nights was up against Bo Rap, Mamma Mia, Evil Woman, December 63 and others so it stood no chance! It’s his 4th Number one, and a span of 24 years, though he would have had others in the 60’s. Lower down, Cotton Eye Joe shoots his way up to 7, he got married a long time ago, where did he come from where did he go? Better ask Rednex! Bon Jovi meanwhile cover xmas up to 8, for a second top 10 hit of the year 8 years of chart entries on, as The Carpenters do an about-turn and rocket up to 9 giving them over 24 years of top 10’s since Close To You hit 1 in 1970.

I have no memory of Boyzone making my top 10 with Love Me For A Reason, but there it is, staring me in the face, I actually did like the soft-shuffle version after all! Human League go top 20, and highest new entry is Riverdance. Yes, things Oirish, and dancin’ were all the rigid-armed vogue, and it was refreshingly different for a time. A short time. At 25, Oasis dismiss the memory of the previous “whatever” single, with an actual Beatlestasticish classic: Whatever! Fab! Meanwhile The Stone Roses go top 20, as the Rolling Stones drop, to be replaced by Guns ‘n’ Roses version of their Sympathy For The Devil at 50.

Watch out, cos here comes the hotstepper, murderer, an american gangster – no it’s not it’s Ini Kamoze at 30, just ahead of Led Zeppelin at 32 with Gallows Pole. Well, as good as, really, 50% is better than none and it’s a cover of the 100% Led Zep. The late Joe Cocker enters at 36, with Let The Healing Begin, and the fab Lightning Seeds are all Change at 38. Even more unlikely than Riverdance, it’s George Formby When I’m Cleaning Windows, missus, at 45 courtesy of 2 In A Tent cheesy dance version. At 56, Siouxsie and The Banshees still have it, 16 years on from Hong Kong Garden, O Baby!

25th December 1994

The Christmas number one is the unthinkable – Mariah Carey tops my chart, who would have thought!? A great record though, even holding off the terrific Madonna at 2 for yet another week. In at 4 it’s a double A oldie, both equally marvellous, the never-big-but-soon-to-be-classic feel-good perennial christmas song from 1988 Driving Home For Christmas, making my top 10 for the second time, and Chris Rea’s heartbreakingly touching Tell Me There’s A Heaven. His two best records together.

The rest of the chart is fairly quiet, though Human League go top 10, Lightning Seeds go top 20, and Sting enters at 29 with This Cowboy Song – and it’s not a depressing ballad! Wow! The days of The Police were over a decade earlier, and Sting just failed to excite for the most part afterwards. Anything with a bit of vitality was a relief! At 30, it’s a cover of another xmas perennial from The Peaches, a pretty good but identical cover of The Waitresses 1981 flop.

5 weeks sowing them seeds on top, with Cher going top 5 18 years since Gypsies Tramps And Thieves first did it (if only she could turn back time!), Belinda’s light is still on with yet another top 10 single, and Billy Joel gets his first since 1983. Curiosity Killed The Cat get a third Top 20 hit, and Technotronic pump up that jam 35 places to 18.

Milli Vanilli get another Top 40 entry, somehow, while Roxette more understandably grab another as Listen To Your Heart starts to bite. New Kids On The Block get 2 simultaneous top 40 entries as Hangin’ Tough pops in. Trust me, that will never happen again! Highest new entry at 38 is a good Erasure single, Drama! At 55 Living In A Box get a second great single, a ballad and nothing like their eponymous number one. Wax sneak back 2 years after 2 great pop singles, anchors aweigh at 65, Bros and Bobby Brown follow-up better singles, The Wonder Stuff have a debut at 72, with more to come from them in the years that followed, ABC make it 7 years of chart entries at 75, it’s The Real Thing. Finally, Debbie Harry’s back with another solo hit, cos she Wants That Man – essentially a Thompson Twins record, written and produced by Alannah Currie and Tom Bailey, pretty much their last hurrah.

Post American-holiday, I remained jetlagged, caught up on new pop music, watched TV (Sledge Hammer, a great redneck cop comedy series; Juke Box Jury (Jools Holland and Julian Clary slagged off Sinitta, though it hardly hurt any of their careers); Time Tunnel and Batman 60’s classics; Blackadder Goes Forth; Police Squad. At work, the car broke down on the way in so I had to call for help from Frizzells Road Rescue. Parks boss Mr Hunt gave me a hard time, interrupting our Parks measuring on a mis-filed old plans wild-goose-chase. Popped round to Bob’s on Sunday to swap holiday photos, and his mum and dad, Ray and Iris, liked them too – some stunning shots amongst them of New York, Niagara and so on. At home, got fed up with all the second-hand smoke choking me and the kids going through a rowdy phase, but gave the go-ahead to mum and dad to organise a trip to Florida with the kids and me.

me in ottawa 1989

8th October 1989

6 weeks for Tears For Fears, 2 for Sydney Youngblood at 2, and Cher gets het first Top 3 since Dark Lady hit 1 in 1974. In the charts that same week was Devil Gate Drive, and Suzi Quatro tops my playlist chart this week ahead of Pet Shop Boys I Get Excited, which wasn’t chart-eligible (B sides and album tracks had been excluded by 1989 till I saw the error of my ways). It would pretty much certainly have been a top 10 track, though.

Pump Up The Jam hits 6, and the sublime Personal Jesus gives Depeche Mode a top 10 hit for the first time in 5 years (Blasphemous Rumours being the last time) and for the 9th time in total. I, too, suffered from Milli Vanilli madness, along with the world, at 10, while the Pet Shop Boys are at 16, as sung by Liza Minelli. Cliff rockets 50 places to 13 with his best record in 2 years, and most likely his last great pop single, though he had 21 years of big hits in my charts by then, not to mention an extra 6 years had I been charting as a nipper, as it’s absolutely certain that tracks like Bachelor Boy, Summer Holiday, All My Love and The Day I Met Marie would have been chart-toppers being as I was mad on them age 5, 6, 7, 8, 9…

Highest new entry, soul great Al Green’s back again 18 years on, this time with hip-hop biggie Arthur Baker, and as suits his Reverend status, The Message Is Love. Oh Well. Yes, it’s Fleetwood Mac’s 60’s rock classic done 80’s club stylee, and in at 37. Oh Well. Oh dear! Shakespear’s Sister’s follow-up runs free at 42, Frankie’s Holly has a spot of heaven at 46, and Lisa Stansfield’s 3rd hit is THE big one, All Around The World, massive in all it’s sexy mid-Atlantic Barry White strings-tastic gorgeousness. I love it, but occasionally I enjoy singing along to it in Lisa’s natural Rochdale accent: Avv bin aroun’t worrld and ah cahn’t fahnd me barebih.

The Thompson Twins get Debbie Harry up to 40, and for good measure get themselves in a bit lower at 64 with a Sugar Daddy. The Jackson 5 also had a minor hit with Sugar Daddy in my 1972 charts, and they pop back (well minus the two most-important singers Michael and Jermaine) at 75.

At home, I started an evening course in garden design (more for work reasons than actual interest, I had an eye on a career in Parks if nothing else came along). Clive, the hippie lecturer showed a tedious video on the history of gardening, but by then sadly I’d already paid and couldn’t back out of the dullness. Monty Python’s great Graham Chapman died this week, I commented: No more Python sadly. Well, 30 years on, and that’s not quite so accurate now, the recent live shows were fun (on TV, I couldn’t get tickets). Hooray! On TV, it was MASH, Red Dwarf, Police Squad, Top Of The Pops, Blackadder Goes Forth, Doctor Who (the best episode in 3 years), and over the weekend I planted up my new pond, and bought a small eucalyptus to plant next to it. Oh was that an expensive mistake when the bloody thing grew and grew when I didn’t bother pruning it – tree surgeons eventually cut it down.

It’s a new number one as Sydney Youngblood’s catchy soulpop dance tune knocks off Tears For Fears after 6 weeks on top, and Belinda Carlisle gets her 2nd-biggest hit (behind number one Circle In The Sand) at 3. Cliff does what he used to do so often – go top 10 – while Grayson Hugh’s fab gospel pop tune shoots up to 7, an American hit if not the UK. Living In A Box have plenty of room in their heart to go up 13, and Al Green keeps the top 20 hits running on for 18 years, yes Love IS the Message. In at 18 with a bluesy gnarl, it’s the Road To Hell, probably Chris Rea’s best record, and 11 years after his previous best record Fool (If You Think It’s Over). Biggest climber is our Lisa at 21, she’s been all around the world….or at least from number 57.

Re-entries, at 20 for Eurythmics single finally out in the UK – Don’t Ask Me Why it wasn’t sooner, and Soul Sister’s bouncy The Way To Your Heart at 31. Double Trouble are Street Tuff into the 40, with the Rebel MC in tow, Bros haven’t mentioned the chocolate box yet, but there it is, at 29 and doing quite well for my charts! De La Soul are welcome back with the good Eye Know at 38, Fuzzbox do a decent cover of Yoko Ono’s classic 1981 Number One, at 48, while Fresh Four don’t so the same to Rose Royce’s 1978 classic Wishing On A Star. Queen continue their string of minor hits, Scandal at 54, really for the first time since 1982 Queen not really grabbing me with their singles off an album.

The Adventures pop back from Washington, 5 years after their debut hits now, and The Creatures take a break, as they do occasionally, from Siouxsie And The Banshees, and hit 63 just Standing There! 10 years on and Rickie Lee Jones has swapped Chuck E for a Satellite, so can’t grumble. Jive Bunny make my charts purely for the Hawaii 5-0 segment, The Blow Monkeys are slaves no more at 71, Prince and Sheena are back together again with the hit ballad The Arms Of Orion from Batman – it’s not a patch on 101 or U Got The Look though, in at 74, just ahead of Alice Cooper resting on a bed of nails.

A return to the top gives the brilliant Sowing The Seeds Of Love a rare 7th week at number one, just ahead of a massive high new entry at 2 for Elton John, with his sweet, affecting ballad Sacrifice, follow-up to Number One Healing Hands. The Uk public were unmoved by both till they were re-issued as a double A side in 1990, at which point the UK agreed with me and made them a chart-topper, the record that reinvigorated Elton’s unfairly unfashionable and declining popularity. Since then, of course, he’s made a career out of back catalogue classics getting to number one!

Elsewhere: Oh Well up to 8. Oh well. Soul Sister leap to 11 with a bouncy track, Expose and Lisa Stansfield go top 20, Queen top 30, and new at 31 Norman Cook is back with the good For Spacious Lies. Who needs The Housemartins, eh, Norman? At 36 Sybil updates the lesser-known (and brilliant) Dionne Warwick/ Burt Bacharach song Don’t Make Me Over, and it’s not bad. Raze are back again with Break 4 Love re-charting at 38, while Martika takes Carole King’s lovely I Feel The Earth Move and removes all passion, but you can dance to it at 39, ditto D Mob debuting Cathy Dennis at 40 with C’mon And Get My Love. Two of the above went on to be successful song-writers, of many a pop and dance classic of the 90’s and 00’s: Clue: it’s Fatboy Slim and Cathy Dennis.

The Temptations, or at least a few of the original line-up, are back at 56 with All I Want Is You 21 years on from their first hit, Janet Jackson ‘s second single from Rhythm Nation, the Jam n Lewis-tastic album (ignoring the annoying spoken mini-tracks) marches forcefully in at 67, and Adeva’s back at 74. I Thank You. On TV? New sitcom “Nutt House” which I’ve forgotten all about – wikipedia reminds me it was 12-episode Mel Brooks series with the fabulous Brooks faves Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman as the stars. That’s good enough for me! I now need to buy them…sadly not available, of course! Julian Clary’s Sticky Moment’s funny, and Doctor Who another goodie, frustratingly about to be cancelled thanks to a nonce Exec.

In life, mum was poorly with bad flu, I was irritable from woken up by the nephew and niece at 6am every morning, and because mum was ill I opted out of going to my cousin’s wedding in Weymouth, which caused guilt and family ill-will. Quite rightly actually, I should have gone. Tit. At worked, tried to pep up a depressed friend/colleague Peter, who was wondering what was the point in life, generally speaking. For the wonders, and art, if nothing else, suggested I, life is it’s own point. Joined the Broadstone gymn, hired a squash court to try and improve before playing others, and was brave enough to use male changing-room shower facilities, something I wouldn’t have done 10 years earlier, what with all the hang-ups I had. The way to deal with hang-ups is to confront them and get over them, seemed to work pretty well with that one, as I don’t give a toss these days!

In news: San Fransisco earthquake happened, big news obviously, while at home I got the kids teas ready while Sue at the doctors. Vicki said “I don’t like you looking after me”, humph, so I told her she was being horrible, and let her eat what she wanted. Made her happier. Parenting skills, eh?! Gardening evening course at Bournemouth Uni again with mature lady students, enjoyed the Uni bar though, still miss student days, much better than working for a living in every way bar one: money. Heavy weekend rain, and took mum to see new movie Star Trek V: The Final Frontier: Shatner did OK with the direction, but the slow script and ageing cast “need young folks to help things along”. In the comics world, it’s the debut of of the “5-year gap” Legion of Super-Heroes issue 1, all grim and gritty and mysterious, but well-written, our heroes now well into their late 20’s and 30’s, keeping up with my real age, unique in the comics world by ageing along with their readership.

Ottawa 89 and me

29th October 1989

Elton John’s second topper of the year, Sacrifice becomes his 8th Number One, and the last one before his voice changed, I loved young Elton’s soulful vocals, not so much a fan of deeper-voiced later-Elton. All change at the top end, as Living In A Box climb to 3, and Grayson Hugh’s great track at 4. Lisa Stansfield gets her 3rd top 10 in a row, and Eurythmics just miss out by a whisker with a good ballad. Liza Minelli bounces back, must be bouncing bombs at 15! Debbie Harry gets another top 20 solo hit while Imagination remix an illusion at 26, new 7 years on from the original. This is long before I got a kiss and hug from Leee John, so no bias involved!

Another actual oldie enters at 34, and it’s a rare fifties classic, the 1956 doowop UK number one Why Do Fools Fall In Love, which was back out, and purchased by me in 12inch vinyl format. I always did like this one (despite Diana Ross’ 1981 massacre), though a lot of fifties tracks tended to pass me by until I got older, they sounded too old in the 70’s and 80’s as production values improved. These days, I appreciate the period charm of many of ‘em, though. At 38, great moody The Sun Rising enters for The Beloved, the first of quite a few. Rod Stewart’s back with a cover of his own cover of an Isley Brothers classic – This Old Heart Of Mine – along with Ronald Isley, at 49. The good news is it’s better than his 1975 turgid version, the bad news is it’s not a patch on the earnest gorgeousness of the 1966 Motown original which hit my Top 5 in 1968, and number one in 1976.

Boy George is back, this time as Jesus Loves You, after the love hits 53, Tina Turner’s back with I Don’t Want To Lose You at 57, Simply Red are back 63, yes you’ve got it, and The Bangles claim they’ll set you free at 66. That’s not all, though, The Eagles Don Henley gets another entry with New York Minute, a sprawling classy cinematic ballad, at 69, New Kids get a third hit with The Right Stuff (so they claim), Luther Vandross finally charts Never Too Much, remixed, and Bob Dylan lengthens his run of hits to 20 years cos everything, apparently, is broken.

On My playlist, I’d rediscovered a little-heard ballad from 1972 by Middle Of The Road that stiffed, the very touching and politically correct Union Silver, a sad ballad if ever there was one, and very under-rated to say the least. At home, planting a willow tree in the back garden, poor old 5-years-dead budgie got dug up – he’d been put into a plastic bag. Ick! The final Entertainment USA on TV, busy videoing Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes season 1 as I got hold of them, not exactly classic Trek but a good substitute add-on at this stage. Squash at the gymn, the last week at work for the team leader Kevin, who’d found gainful (better paid) employment outside the Council, and we bought him an Erasure album as a going away prezzie (Wild). We all missed him, and as a consequence of his going I got made up to unofficial team-leader (no extra cash or written responsibility of course). Sent a card to Aunty Eileen, off into hospital for an operation, went to Uni evening course, which was of no long-term consequence in my life, and joined up following an invitation to Apa247, the new Legion Of Super-Heroes fanzine, which meant I had to get back into writing (every two months) and which opened up new lifestyle changes and gave me a great group of friends for 25 years. We had our 25th anniversary do the other week, perhaps not as young and gorgeous as were back in 89, and with four tragically having passed away far too young, but still having a ball every 2 months thankfully. Hooray!
