28th December 2014

It’s Mark Ronson hitting the top spot for the first time, with Bruno Mars getting his 3rd chart-topper, and the fabulous funky Uptown Funk! The top end of the chart looks like Halloween with devils and ghosts, lower down it’s a christmas bonanza as the ghosts of xmas past enter drop climb or drop out. Not to mention movie themes from SIA (Annie’s You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile) and The Weeknd climbing to 12 and entering at 7 with his theme to 50 Shades Of Grey, Earned It – greedy The Weeknd has 2 in the 10 (and his 3rd in total), and so has Madonna as Devil Pray enters at 9, and Ghosttown climbs to 4 proving she’s back on form, and with most of the album and singles yet to be released. For the record, that’s pretty much Top 10’s from 1984 for 30 years barring 10 or 15 or so that underperfomed, and Hanky Panky which is unlistenable these days.

Meanwhile Paul McCartney re-enters the top 40 with his computer game track, just behind ex-partner John Lennon back for the millionth time with Happy Xmas War Is Over, first hitting my number one in 1972, the first ever christmas chart-topper, the one that has hit the top spot way more times than any other record, and the one that has charted several times in every decade since with a grand total of chart points only beaten by 1 or 2 tracks, Abba’s Dancing Queen and on a par (I need to check after this run) with California Dreamin’ from The Mamas And The Papas.

Talking of Lennon and McCartney, Joe Cocker’s brilliant With A Little Help From My Friends returns at 5 with his epic version of The Beatles song, which first hit my top 10 46 years ago, but never quite made the top 5, and following his sad death last week. He now has two notable feats: one of the very rare covers of a Beatles song that improves on the original, I still recall being surprised and attracted and repulsed simultaneously when I first heard it on Top Of The Pops with his strange singing and body gyrations. The others: longest gap between leaving the charts and returning, almost exactly 46 years, and the longest time taken to reach a chart peak (46 years 2 months).

Another welcome return to a veteran as Linda Lewis is back after a very long break of about 15 years, thanks to a plug on Never Mind The Buzzcocks where Phil Jupetus knew instantly who she was in the mystery line-up, as do I for a long-time fave. For those who know her not, she was originally a British singer-songwriter albums artist who never quite made it big, but grabbed a hit with Rock A Doodle Doo in 1973, with it’s soul/folk sounds and her incredible vocal range. The new entry is a recently released archive BBC version, and it’s great to have her back. To check out her Mariah-Carey-ish vocal range have a look at It’s In His Kiss her 1975 disco hit cover of The Shoop Shoop Song. It pisses over every other version from a great height.

Ariane Grande and The Weeknd both get their first tuneful number one, holding off Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars new retrotastic entry at 2 by a whisker. Uptown Funk! Olly Murs gets another top 10 hit, aided by Demi Lovato getting her first. Great video too.

Calvin Harris also gets yet another top 10, ditto Ellie Golding, up to 7 together, just ahead of Gary Barlow’s duet with Agnetha Faltskog, giving her 31 years of solo hits or 40 years with Abba. Abba meanwhile keep on slipping upwards with 1980’s Our Last Summer to 26.

Loads of Christmas oldies pop back again, the order changes, some don’t make it this year, but only one that has never charted before, the anti-xmas Sparks track from 1974 at 20. Madonna gets two new entries, the highest one is a leaked album track Ghosttown which sounded pretty good to me on one listen!

OneRepublic cover from Ben X-Factor Haenow pops in, just ahead of some Spanish club tunes like Shake That at 40. Finally, Ashley Campbell, Glen’s daughter joins her father in the charts too, off the same EP as Glen’s number one and The Band Perry’s cover of Gentle On My Mind.

14th December 2014

It’s Take That on top for the 4th time in 21 years, following Pray, Back For Good, and The Flood, though Mark Owen also has one solo, putting him ahead of Gary Barlow, but not missing Robbie. For some inexplicable reason Ariana Grande’s best record has failed to go top 40, so I’m sure it’s small consolation that she’s shot up to 2 with her Love Me Harder, which also gives The Weeknd a second number 2 – an act who also just never seems to get the hits he deserves.

Pink Floyd finally go top 5 with Emily, and The Pierces get yet another top 5, yet never quite top the chart. Years and Years at 10, a re-entry for the fab floppy Wisin Adrenalina latin dance track at 19, one I wanted to enter into Buzzjack, and still getting played over here in the Canaries in the clubs. As is Inna, RuPaul, and a bunch of others, including Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off which pops back up in response to me shaking it off along with her in the video. Good thing I look cool dancing a bit, not at all like a dancing dad. I don’t move enough for that unless I’m drunk.

The X-Factor pushes a few records in and up, most notably Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud which has finally charted after being ignored by me for 6 months. Ben has a much less whiny overly-emotive voice than Ed, which allowed the actual song to come through better. Paloma Faith is back again, Sissy That Walk sounded good in the club in a thumping dance mix, so also belatedly enters my chart after being ignored in Buzzjack Song Contest, and giving RuPaul a 3rd or 4th hit some 22 years on from the first. Going top 40, Quo, Sparks and Train add to their lists of hits.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

7th December 2014

It’s a 2nd week on top for The Veronicas, just holding off Take That who get to runners-up, and bronze spot for The Hunger Games song. The Pierces run of top 10 sungles remains unbroken as the latest pops up to 8, and Taylor Swift gets 2 in a row as number 3 hovers just outside the top 10! Highest new entry is Sam Smith, Like I Can belatedly giving him his best position in a while, he might have had some number ones, and my top record of 2013 (La La La) but his ballad overdose this year has become annoying, as they just will NOT go away.

Lots of jumping up of chart stuff, some Christmas songs (as usual) but one “not a christmas song” from Sparks 1974 album which is getting a proper single release, making it the 5th off Kimono My House to chart since This Town Ain’t Big Enough hit number one over 40 years ago. Status Quo do an acoustic version of debut classic psychedelic pop 1968 hit Pictures Of Matchstick Men, Kylie does Clash with Jools, Olly Murs replaces his own underperforming first single off the album, aided by Demi Lovato, Train are back and also replacing themselves in the chart, Johnny Marr gets a solo hit some 31years after This Charming Man announced The Smiths, and Idris Elba, actor/musician/all-round talent enlists Maverick Sabre for a chart entry. Idris not only does adverts, he appears in everything these days, American and British, but I especially like him in the Avengers/Thor films and Prometheus, just because that’s my thing.

30th November 2014

It’s The Veronicas! 5 years after debut hit Untouched peaked at 29 for the Aussies, the delayed follow-up goes all the way to 1, a fab ballad mystifyingly not getting airplay. Given the turgid ballads getting dreary play after dreary play on British radio and streaming sites, month after endless month, it’s time to shout out loud, ENOUGH! Give the airplay instead to this one, and the fab number 2 cover version of The Beatles 1996 hit – Tom Odell has outdone the Fabs in my charts!

Glen Campbell’s EP is now downloaded and he heads back upwards along with another track, The Band Perry’s version of his Gentle On My Mind, the third version to go top 5, and 45 years since Dean Martin took it there first. Pink Floyd finally get another Top 10, 35 years on from number one Another Brick In The Wall, and it’s their first 60’s single, the terrific psychedelic pop of See Emily Play, up 47 to 9, just ahead of the highest new entry, yes it’s Jennifer Lawrence’s powerful performance of the song from The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at 10. Haunting.

Taylor Swift has to make do with 11 for now (Blank Space) and 28 (Welcome To New York), while Blonde are back at a new peak of 16, ahead of UK single release, and The Pierces keep up their top 20 record with every single so far. Cat Stevens is back for the first time in well over 35 years, with a blues cover version at 48 – OK, technically he has charted in the interim as Yusuf, and with oldies, but it’s great to have the brand name back in use.

23rd November 2014

HALOS take the top spot with the haunting Dust, and I expect to hear HALOS happening in 2015. Or else! Up 50 places and The Veronicas outdo their earlier hits from 5 years back, now at 6, while Noel Gallagher almost makes it at 11, edged out by Michael Jackson, still grabbing top 10 hits, despite being inconveniently late, and 44 years on from the first ones.

The Band Perry take Gentle On My Mind into the top 20, classy country, and the 3rd time the song has done that, since Dean Martin had the first entry back in 1969. Taylor Swift has another new entry in the 75, Blank Space popping in at 38, just ahead of veteran Dolly with her Blue Smoke. Band Aid 30 becomes the 4th version to chart, I support the cause strongly, and had a long blurb in response to Janet Street-Porter’s article and all the slaggers-off. End of the day, it’s a response to save lives, nothing else matters, if anyone is offended or embarrassed by pop stars trying to do something, tough, if you’ve got anything better to suggest RIGHT NOW (as in, not leaving it months until more people have died) then speak up or shut up with the petty whingeing. Hypocrites. Geldof is a mouthy, arrogant SOB, and always has been, but he’s invariably spot on with his observations on situations, and does what has to be done, even if that means swallowing his pride and going on X-Factor, because that’s not important in the scheme of things. Saving lives is. Nuff said. PS the UN asked him to do it because only 3 countries have responded so far in any significant way. UK, USA, France.

16th November 2014

It’s a new number one from Cosmonaut Grechko, Russian retro dance producer, love those laid back 70’s soul vibes in Anytime. Jungle go top 5, funk class, and James Blunt gets his 5th top 5 hit 8 years since the last one, in fact all of his top 5 hits peaked at 5, except for Wisemen which hit 3. Billy Idol can do better, though, he hasn’t made the top 10 since 1988 when Hot In the City (remixed) became his 7th, and only Mony Mony (5) has done better since Eyes Without A face hit 1 in 1984.

Take That have had loads of top 10 hits over the last 22 years of course, so it’s no surprise for their new single to be at 9, and Paul carrack has had plenty of top 20 hits over 40 years, so ditto! Pharrell gets another top 40 entry, and so does Tom Odell covering The Beatles rework of John Lennon’s demo cassette vocal, Real Love is the last ever Beatles recording, and it’s great to see it getting belated recognition after having largely been forgotten for almost 20 years.

The Band Perry cover Glen Campbell’s Gentle On My Mind for the tribute EP which includes number 7 I’m Not Gonna Miss You, and it’s a really good version at 45. Down the bottom end, Bryan Ferry extends his run to over 42 years of hits, while Bette Midler covers the gorgeous 50’s song Mr Sandman (made immortal in Back To The Future) on her covers album, giving her one of her very occasional chart entries that date back to 1977.

9th November 2014

It’s Neil Young, a modern orchestral hippie anthem, which is fine by lil ol tree-hugger me, giving Neil his first ever chart-topper a whopping 42 years after debuting in my chart. That beats Petula Clark’s 41-year gap to top my chart with new material (though oldies did it earlier). HALOS have to settle for runners-up with the haunting Dust, for now. Dorothy Moore has also taken a large 38 years to finally make my top 10 with Misty Blue, after peaking a fair bit lower first time round – got there in the end!

Jungle and GOAT also get their first Top 10’s. Blunt’y’s back at 16 with a track that almost made the UK Top 40 sales chart, but completely failed to make the “Official” UK chart. That’s the shit, boring Streaming-dominated heap of steaming manure that induces anyone listening to it to fall into a long coma. Other new sales hits like Queen also miss out.

Billy Idol gets a quick second Top 20 hit, his singles back on form, love that riff. Status Quo keep the Top 40 hits coming, too, as does Rumer and Paul Carrack. Garth Brooks, country legend that never did much for me finally gets another hit over 20 years later, as he returns to recording with rather a good song. Nice bloke. Noel Gallagher also returns, but he’s had hits throughout the last 20 years, unlike Garth. Prince also sneaks in, keeping his comeback up, too.

2nd November 2014

It’s Glen Campbell at number one for the 12th time with his last heart-breaking record, the lyrics say it all, his vocal adds more, and it’s a brilliant way to say goodbye. Glen has Alzheimers, like my mum who also has loved Glen for as long as me. It was mum’s 76th birthday last week and I took her to my brothers in Weymouth for his 55th, playing her my current playlist records. She liked Ariana Grande best (up to 18 from 60) among several and tried to singalong. Still cool at 76.

Glen’s 78, and highest of 23 incredible new entries at 2 is a sprightly 69-year-old with his biggest hit ever, despite charting now for 42 years on and off. It’s Neil Young, and his new sweeping orchestral “State Of The World Today” themed record. I believe in the message of this record, and have done since I was a kid buying Save The World themed songs. They get more relevant with every passing year. The chart, meanwhile is highly volatile, records dropping out from high to make way for the invasion of the new.

HALOS shoot up to 6 with haunting Dust, and the laid-back retro groove of the gorgeous Cosmonaut Grechko just sends me (man) up 59 places to 8. Take That get another big hit 21 years on, at 13, Michael Jackson borrows heavily from Horse (Place) With No Name to climb to 17 and Jungle re-enter at 23 with a terrific Busy single. Others: OneRepublic bounce back, GOAT offer some Swedish psychedelia rock which I happily take, Rae Morris goes top 40, Paul Carrack has 40 years of hits this month, Deacon Blue are back again, ditto Billy Idol, and stunningly Pink Floyd have a classic-period new old track out in at 58 louder than words. If you can follow that sentence you’re doing well! Finally, at 75, one of the 3 uncharted tracks off possibly the greatest album of all-time (Bridge Over Troubled Water, back in the UK charts nearly 45 years on)! Gorgeous.

26th October 2014

It’s Jenny Lewis again on top for a second week, produced by Ryan Adams and some fab guitar work and strings. Great song, great singer, and an actress who’s been in Pleasantville and American Dad. Immaculate. U2 kick themselves out of the top 10 with the best track on their great (slagged-off) album, subtle and dark, quirky and inventive, giving them their first Top 5 hit for 8 years. Just cos it’s free doesn’t mean it’s not a great album (it is).

Frankie Valli gets the long-awaited Top 10 hit with Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – it was Andy Williams who had the UK hit. And Boystown Gang. And Pet Shop Boys in a hilariously brilliant mix with U2’s Where The Streets Have No Name, easily as good as both originals, if not much better. Andy and Pet Shop Boys both got a number one out of it, but the Four Seasons had to wait for the latest hits album following the movie of the hit stage show Jersey Boys – it’s basically a Four Seasons record.

There’s some song contest mystery records in the chart – all will be revealed eventually – but the highest new entry isn’t available in the UK: it’s Glen Campbell’s final record, recorded before he became based in a care home with alzheimers, and a heartbreaking final farewell to his loved ones, charting in the Hot 100 following a youtube video and documentary.

At 22, Tin Tin enters. Not Herge, it’s an Australian band from 1971 with a Maurice Gibb-pushed 60’s psychedelic pop track I heard for the first time on Steve Wright’s show this week. It’s fab. Take That are back at 40. Well, 60% of Take That are back. Gwen Stefani’s back at 49 after a long absence (apart from No Doubt tracks), with a record I can’t buy till January in the UK. Bet it ends up being March.

19th October 2014

It’s Jenny by the slimmest of margins, the gorgeous melody just pipped Ella’s dramatic epic, but both are great. Mama’s Gun get a 2nd Top 10 in a row, while Calvin harris and John Newman finally break into the 20, and Ella Eyre into the 40.

The big news though is the release, after decades of waiting, and long after the deaths of both singers, of the Queen and Michael Jackson duet There Must Be More To Life Than This. Jacko of course has another one climbing further down, and no doubt plenty more in the vaults, but this may well be the last Queen scoop left unreleased. I like it on one hearing quite a bit!

Erasure get another Top 40 hit, 2 in quick succession, while The Veronicas bang in on one hearing at 38, ruining me with that tune. Rumer and Indila are both back with classy ballads, and that’s about that!

12th October 2014

It’s back on top for Sigma and Paloma, 2 weeks in total, holding an invasion by the girls, Jenny Lewis’s great 90’s-stylee ballad leaping up to 3 just ahead of Ella Henderson’s terrific military-rhythmed follow-up Glow, lighting up my chart at 4, 32 places jumping. The highest new entry is Cilla again, and again a record I was mad on aged 6, though it any case had two runs topping my chart in 1977 and 2003: You’re My World. It would have peaked at 74 in the singles chart (sales) giving Cilla 2 chart hits at the same time, and of course due to ITV’s Cilla. The BBC also get some action in too, with The Beach Boys multi-star cover recording of God Only Knows. It’s a great video, and it’s for charity, but I stick with my previous quote: God Only Knows is a perfect record (having topped my chart twice), an all-time classic, with intricate melodies and harmonies, and heart-warming lyrics and it’s impossible to cover without sounding vastly inferior.

James Blunt’s back with another corker, Simple Minds add to the 32 years of hits with a goodie, Lillywood finally makes my top 40, but my word what a bitter lyric, get over yourself dear, what did he do, murder your family! Oh, and Neil Diamond’s back with a new track, that’s 44 years of hits in my chart…That’s not bad!

5th October 2014

It’s an 18-year old Canadian who’s played on Pharrell’s records, and who has a stunning voice. In a pop scene crowded by emotionless teeniepop singers, Francesco Yates is the real deal. Looks like a boy, sounds mature, this track just grows, and why it’s not a worldwide smash (yet) is mystifying. It’s another buzzjack song contest non-winner and everyone who didn’t vote for it needs a slap!

GRL is also a great pop song, up at 3, Sigma is still brilliant at 2, and Taylor Swift goes top 5 with the song that just gets catchier week on week. Hudson Hawke (Ugh!) has no lyrics (Ugh!) but is another Buzzjack choon and a half that didn’t even make the semis: more slaps please! U2 get a double leaping, the single up at 10 with all those terrif riffs, and the subtle album track up to 27. To all the whingers annoyed at getting something for free – just no pleasing some folk, it’s a great album.

Highest new entry, Labrinth goes gospel experimental and is instantly in at 12, great stuff. Huge smash megan’s up to 14 with her bass, and Billy Idol goes Top 20 for the first time in 2 decades with a great frantic guitarpop track. Mamas Gun get 2 in the 40, Ella Henderson has a good follow-up at 36, and finally two fab Lynsey de Paul songs which were hits for The Fortunes and Thunderthighs sneak in to my chart, as they never charted, and I’ve changed my chart rules to allow never-charted stuff as a last goodbye to departing favourites. Lynsey was a fave of mine from age 14, largely for her songwriting, and had number ones with Storm In A Teacup and Sugar Me in 1972.
