It’s Dusty for a second week on top keeping off ABC grabbing a second chart-topper of the year, ABC is just pure class, but Dusty is an anthem! That leaves Frances sneaking into the top 10, Richard Ashcroft getting a second top 20 of the year, and Banks having a good move into the 20. Highest new entry at 26 is Dua Lipa, following up number one Hotter Than Hell, (Mwah!), sounds like a hit to me!
At 29 it’s the sultry soul of a very Prince-ish Gallant and Bourbon, while new at 36 it’s BETSY, not unlike Cher vocally, which is a good thing in my book. Big jumps for Florence and Petula Clark outside the 40, and debuts for the critically lauded RAT BOY at 56, not far ahead of another superhero-sounding Rag’n’Bone Man, presumably one turns into a rat, the other does superhero clothes for cash. RAT BOY has gone for a 70’s-funk-styled rap & singing chorus, and it’s fab too. Billy Fury pops in with another childhood oldie I didn’t know I knew till I caught up with again the other week, very Up On The Roof-ish, and one I must have loved as a kid cos it’s very familiar to me yet I don’t recall hearing it much since. Lastly, welcome back Empire Of The Sun after a break, and Frank Ocean’s most-commercial track off his new album, featuring Beyonce. He even samples The actual Beatles on the album, that’s rare! Rare they allow it. The meanie won’t let me download individual tracks though.

It’s Dusty’s 1966 classic finally topping my chart 50 years late. You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me topped the UK chart that year, but predated my charts (though she would have certainly topped my fictional chart in 1964, cos I was mad as a hatter for I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself age 6, which topped as an album track eventually). It’s therefore her 7th Number One since she first did it with the Pet Shop Boys in 1987.
Highest new entry is at 4 for FMLYBND, very in the synth pop tradition of a few years back, and fab, while in at 9 it’s Francis & The Lights joining Fitz & The Tantrums in the top 10, with some help from Bon Iver (and in the video Kanye West), and terrific new single, Friends. Fab. GLADES jumps into the 10, Kungs replace themselves in the top 40 with a great new track that seems to have a Lightning Seeds riff in it, and the producer Roberto Rosan of German-based classical-pop act Sweetbox (hit in 1997 with Everything’s Gonna Be Alright and active onwards since then) has a new project SYMPHOBIA who have dabbled with a bit of Tchaikovski also to good hip hop effect, I Do I Do believe.
In a deluge of new acts, I’ve had to expand my chart once again to 100, just when I was hoping to chop it down to 75! Doh! Happily that means room for new singles from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, 14 years on since she murdered the dancefloor on top of my charts, not to mention Spiller, Florence + The Machine, and an oldie from Herb Alpert (a light-hearted instrumental jazz cover of the 1965 hit A Walk In The Black Forest – another track I was big on at the time, as done by German Horst Jankowski). I was only 7 but I loved a good pop tune! Talking of golden oldies, Petula Clark is back at the age of 83 with a good contemporary-sounding ballad 4 years after topping my charts for the second time, and the oldest person to do that with new material (Cut Copy Me). Pet was having hits before I was born, hard as that is to believe, and I intend to see her in concert later this year to enjoy the new and recent stuff and the huge list of golden 60’s singles (I hope). It’s Dua Lipa with Hotter Than hell finally topping chart after 15 weeks, a very long time for a record to hit my top spot, but it just still sounds so fab, fresh. Should have been a bigger UK chart hit, at least it made the top 10 on sales. Shooting up to 2 is my Buzzjack Song Contest entry, the clappy happy Fitz & The Tantrums, while highest new entry is also from the BJSC, Morgxn, and a fab Years And Years-ish remix of Love With The Lights On, while ditto for new at 18 High Contrast with Clare Maguire gracing my top 20 not for the first time, but this time with a dance stormer.
It’s a big climb for Twenty One Pilots’ Suicide Squad Track (yay Harley!) leapfrogging the other one (I Started A Joke), with big climbs for Vaults and Banks as they both pull a heist of my chart, with Timeflies always there in any heist. Ouch! Further down, with some penguins, it’s octogenarian legend, Beatles widow, and avant-garde Japanese musician and artist Yoko Ono, back again some 35 years since she topped my chart solo with Walking On Thin Ice, the final track she worked on with husband John Lennon the night he was murdered. Together they both first topped my chart as the Plastic Ono Band with the timeless chant Give Peace A Chance in 1969, giving her a span of 47 years of hits – and she was already in her 30’s then!

It’s ABC for a second week on top as another great track from The Lexicon Of Love II, Kiss Me Goodbye, rockets up 58 places to 8, giving them a 3rd top 10 of the year. It’s gorgeous and I hope it’s the next single. Meanwhile, their 5th chart entry of the year and also from the album sneaks in at 67, Ten Below Zero. Highest climber is Offaiah, up 71 and causing Trouble at 16.
Highest new entry is Richard Ashcroft, They Don’t Own Me at 26, giving him 2 inside the 30, while at 28 is a cut from the new Suicide Squad movie from ConfidentialMX, a haunting semi-orchestral version of the Bee Gees brilliant I Started A Joke. Probably their most under-rated 60’s song, it’s already topped my chart for The Bee Gees and in a cover from Pet Shop Boys, both this century. Fingers-crossed this version takes it to a wider audience!
Others: Frances gets a 3rd chart entry at 30, the lovely Say It Again, Blossoms enter at 38 with Charlemagne, Bieber sneaks in twice at the lower end guesting for DJ Snake and Major Lazer: he certainly knows which way his dance-producer bread is buttered, though to be honest he could record himself farting into a microphone, set it to a 2016 production and his fans would make it number one. Just saying….. 
That leaves a newie from golden oldie Dolly Parton, giving her a span of 40 years of charting, and an oldie from Nancy Sinatra, her version of Neil Diamond’s 60’s Holly Holy, probably the best version I’ve heard, even over the previously charted Junior Walker & The All Stars (1973) and UB40 (1998) and Neil’s original. Nancy has an official chart run of 45 years, but it should be 50 years (cos These Boots would have topped my imaginary chart in 1966, being as I was mad on it aged 8).

It’s ABC burning Flames of Desire over 34 years since The Look Of Love gave them their only other chart topper. Pure class. Up 25 places to 7 it’s Kwamie Liv, Danish Singer-songwriter with her sultry gorgeous Higher. A real grower. Meanwhile the under-rated American solo singer Max Jury gets his 2nd top 10 with the lovely Love That Grows Old, rocketing to 10 from 44.
Another under-rated act for some years is American singer-songwriter Lissie, she’s had quite a few charts entries with me, and a couple of top 10’s, but is yet to taste real chart success. Lissie, Max and Kwamie all have vocal passion, something that seems out of fashion give or take Adele, at least in the singles charts. Christine And The Queens shoot into the top 40, side by side with another French act, while highest new entry is from Fitz And The Tantrums, HandClap, is a fab slice of indiepop EDM from the L.A. band.

It’s Javiera Mena after 10 weeks charting on top, I’ve been a little bit obsessed with her Otra Era this week, the subtle, insistent, tuneful Chilean vibes are juuuuust gorgeous. I still love Salt Ashes almost as much though, even though it’s at 2, and ABC go up to 3, their 3rd top 3. The exciting No Wyld shoot up to 6, and there’s a few Pet Shop Boys tracks in and back and about, following their storming Royal Opera House concert. Not bad for 30 years in the biz!
Olly Murs has a nice top 20 leap, and Dusty’s classic at long last also makes the 20 50 years on. Highest new entry is a classy French language delight from Vendredi sur Mer at 26, and French act Christine And The Queens at 60, with other returnees being Max Jury, Josef Salvat on a roll – 3 top 40’s in a row – Selena Gomez, and Beverley Knight extending her run to over 20 years with a song that I first charted over 47 years ago in its’ original version: Private Number hit my top 10 for William Bell & Judy Clay in early 1969.

It’s 3 weeks at 1 for the fab Salt Ashes, holding off Grace, Richard Ashcroft and the highest new entry from ABC, the next single from the sophisticated Lexicon Of Love II album, the lovely The Flames Of Desire makes it 2 top 5 in a row for Martin Fry for the first time in 34 years. Pet Shop Boys meantime make it 5 from Super to go top 10, as Twenty Something hits 8 ahead of my Royal Opera House concert live performance. I say “my”, I mean “their”.
In at 23, the fab dramatic No Wyld with Let Me Know, a bit early 2000’s in style, while Katy Perry has an Olympic return, and she is High straight into the 40, some 8 years or so since she kissed a girl and a couple of chart-toppers in between. Yasmin has previously topped my chart in 2011 with Finish Line, this time she’s back with Infinity Ink at 30. At 37, it’s in an advert, and it’s in the trailer for DC/warners new Suicide Squad film, which gives me an excuse to rechart my 1973 number one from The Sweet. Ballroom Blitz is glamtastic fab and I’m 15 years old all over again.

Elsewhere, The Monkees re-do a 60’s duet with the very late Harry Nilsson, using his vocals on his song for them, giving them 3, and Harry his first “new” entry since 1977. One of his songs has topped my chart in recent years though for Order Of Era, one I entered into Buzzjack Song Contest, as I have with Firebeatz, at 26. Fall Out Boy keep ’em coming, a reinvention of Ghostbusters with Missy Elliot, now into her 3rd decade of hits in not much under 20 years. It’s from the movie of course. That Missy comment also applies to Britney Spears who’s back too, 18 years since she was in her school outfit asking to be belted.

It’s Salt Ashes for a second week with the fab Save It, just ahead of Grace leaping to 8 and her second top 5 following You Don’t Own Me. She’s a Hell Of A Girl, but When The Night Comes it’s ELO I turn to, with their highest charting of the year, and extending Jeff Lynne’s top 10 run to just over 44 years.
As I at long last take advantage of only 3 new entries to chop my chart to 90, fingers crossed I can get it back to 75 soon! Olly Murs is back, but that’s nothing compared to The Stone Roses chart return after a gap of 20 odd years, and 27 years since debuting. Inside the 40, going up is Rick Astley grabbing his 2nd top 40 of the year, Alan Walker does the same, while Bob Marley’s Is This Love is back inside the 40 after a gap of 38 years, albeit remix stylee. Bob has now had more remixed and reissued chart entries since he died than hits when he was alive. Rihanna’s Star Trek movie theme does better than any of her latest album tracks in my chart, and returns her to the 40, just as well as it’s unheard of for any of her previous albums not to have at least ONE top 40 track.

It’s Salt Ashes on top, hopefully a future smash, such a fab dance track, and their second top 20 hit, just ahead of Dua Lipa climbing from 13 to 2. ELO get another top 20, they’ve not been on this form (or rather Jeff Lynne hasn’t been) since 1981! Neil Sedaka takes his Deadpool oldie into the 20 giving him his first oldie in my top 20 since Oh Carol in 1972, and his first since 1975. Meanwhile Grace gets a second top 20 as Hell Of A Girl rockets up 80 places.

It’s fabulous Bread on top for a second week as the country tries to turn the clock back 46 years to join Bread in 1970. That can only turn out well as there is no actual thing as a time machine. Red Hot Chili Peppers hit the top 10, only the 4th time they’ve done that, By The Way, and The Zephyr Song both peaked at 4 in 2002, and, Universally Speaking in 2003 hit 8, so it’s been 13 years waiting! Dua Lipa finally breaks into the 20 cos she’s Hotter Than Hell, while Deadpool on DVD Bluray boosts Neil Sedaka and Juice Newton.
Hot off Glastonbury, 70’s legend and huge fave of mine, Jeff Lynne has the highest ELO entry at 37, When The Night Comes being the 4th off his current album to make my 40. Back in the Vinyl Age, he first charted with The Move and a Brontosaurus, in 1970. The Beach Boys 1966 classic Pet Sounds is specially editioned back into the album charts, and that allows the fab track You Still Believe In Me to chart 50 years on. The boys were number 2 in my first ever chart in 1968, behind The Beatles and ahead of Dusty Springfield. Whaddya know, they all in my chart still with uncharted 60’s classics!
Rick Astley gets his second comeback chart entry, a Squeeze oldie from 1978 joins their current former chart-topper, as Macca enters with another track off Pure McCartney with another Band On The Run track, Let Me Roll It, which leaves only 3 of the tracks off that 1974 classic album yet to chart. Another 1978 oldie is back, in remixed form, for Bob Marley – Is This Love.

It’s a classic ballad from 1970 on top, a gorgeous song that peaked at 2 in my charts of the time, and one which topped my chart in a over by Let Loose 20 years ago. Make It With You is being heavily featured in an advert and has duly made the UK sales top 100 – not the streaming chart, the one I actually still care about where old folk like me still buy with actual money and the number ones are way better. I always loved the song so 46 years late it climbs one spot higher to give Bread, and main singer-songwriter girlie heart-throb David Gates his first chart-topper. Bread never made the uk trek to TOTP back in the day so they charted on the song, and I never got see Bread at their peak. Looking back now, he was quite the good-looker wholesome teen appeal on top of the songwriting talent and angelic voice.
Elton John gets his first top 5 with new material since he topped the chart uncredited a decade ago with Scissor Sisters I Dont Feel Like Dancing, this time assisting Bright Light Bright Light. You can see the Elton influence on both pop gems which makes me wonder why his solo albums are so dreary year after year. He’s down with current music trends – he just avoids them on his recordings. He needs a kick up the ass. Meanwhile another old 70s star who also needs a kickstart is back up – I’m supporting Bob Geldofs showdown of the loathesome racist Nigel Farage, drowning him out with the original version of The In Crowd on the River Thames, and as done definitively here from 1974 and Bryan Ferrys version.

It’s 67-year-old Jean-Michel Jarre electronica legend and 80’s quirky popstress 62-year-old Cyndi Lauper on top with the cool, and soon to be a single, Swipe To The Right, something we all do daily these days. It’s a banging dance choon and the first chart-topper for both acts, Cyndi’s been waiting patiently over 32 years, and Jean-Michel hanging in there 39 years since his classic Oxygene Part IV peaked at 2 when I just started Uni. Meanwhile 50’s popstar Frankie Avalon finally gets his 1959 Venus into my top 10, so that’s the oldest duo to top my chart, the oldest track to hit my top 10 (57 years old), and with The Monkees at 10, the oldest band to hit my top 10 with new material (Micky is 71, Peter 74 and Mike 73), and the last time Mike was in my top 10 solo was the year Jean-Michel Jarre debuted – 1977. Had I been charting in 1967 they would also have the longest span of top 10 hits, 50 years give or take. They also enter the top 40 with their official single,
Talking of 60’s veterans, and bangin’ EDM pensioners, back in at 13 is 73-year-old Paul McCartney’s 1974 album track, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five as re-imagined by Timo Maas and James Teej, that’s the 5th track off Band On The Run to make my top 20. Paul slips out obscure dance tracks under his pseudonym The Fireman, with producer-partner Youth, of 80’s fab dance-synthpop act Brilliant who never made it, but charted with me several times. Not a lot of people know that. 90’s veteran Richard Ashcroft returns to the top 20 with the fab Hold On, up there with his best material solo and with The Verve. Other 90’s veterans Red Hot Chili Peppers do the same with one of their best tracks, Dark Necessities is a grower.
Top 40 entries for Primal Scream, yet another 90’s veteran act (with Jean-Michel), Protoje gets a 2nd top 40, and OneRepublic extend their run back 8 years or so. Just behind them is someone who’s been absent for 7 years as an act – RedOne debuted with Lady Gaga with chart-topper Just Dance, and now is back with yet more 90’s veterans Enrique Iglesias and Shaggy. They have all topped my chart. Greedy Enrique also enters with his Latin monster Duele El Corazon, featuring Wisin.

It’s the Pet Shop Boys Burn-ing on top for a second week, and holding off the joint challenge of Jean-Michel Jarre (who they join with at 22 themselves) and Cyndi Lauper. That’s Jean-Michel’s 2nd number 2 39 years since the first, and Cyndi’s first in 32 years of trying. Sigma grab another top 10 with Cry, which also gives Take That another year of top 10’s 23 years since the first, Pray.
Highest new entry at 26 is from an advert, Lemaitre turning up a year late in my chart, though not as late as another advert song, at 99, for The Vogues – Five O’Clock World was an American 60’s hit that flopped in the UK, but one which I regularly used to hear on Florida’s then-60s-oldies radio station on my regular Florida holidays in the 90’s. The advert reminded me I never did manage to find a compilation CD in the States with it on, so it’s in my download basket right now.
Talking of the 60’s, I can’t understate my surprise to see a new album turn up from The Monkees. It’s literally been 30 years since their last one, and that was basically just Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. The new one has the late Davy Jones on an unreleased 60’s track, but otherwise features Micky, Peter and Mike “Michael” Nesmith – and a host of guest stars writing them songs. Best of the tracks are the ex-XTC Andy Partridge song You Bring The Summer, in at 57, and a Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher joint 60’s psychedelic-sounding song, in at 39 for the fab gear Birth Of An Accidental Hipster. Now, 49 years ago I was a pre-teen, and I was mad on The Monkees records and the TV sitcom-with-music quirky antics. The Beatles were fans, the press loathed them (being dicks) and a generation of musicians were influenced by them anyway, despite the snotty music critics. Cos they were genuinely good! So, 30 years since the first and last time they had a new track in my chart, they are back. The Monkees have topped my chart loads of times with oldies, though, starting in 1974, as their singles chart career just pre-dated my chart starting up in 1968. Phew!

It’s the Pet Shop Boys with their 3rd chart-topper of 2016. It’s a great dance anthem, and I’m nothing if not loyal. Shame the actual single is up to only 19, with the Jean-Michel Jarre combo up to 22 for the lads. Jean-M J is up to 8 and 54 with 80’s veteran Cyndi and 90’s veterans Primal Scream. ABC get their first (or rather Martin Fry does, as it is only he these days) top 5 since 1987, tha fab Viva Love while their Gary Barlow combo is into the top 30. Gary’s new combo with Sigma leaps into the 20 with his Take That mates, giving the lads 24 years of top 20’s.
Big climbs for Javiera Mena, Coldplay, Laura Tesoro, Kungs vs Cookin (hooray an actual UK hit for a great single in a rubbish chart dominated by the album tracks and singles of tedious superstars to the exclusion of everyone else. Hi to the awful Drake who deserves all of the criticism he gets from fellow rappers, dull Rihanna, the long-overstayed-his-welcome Justin Bieber and a host of other singles which stopped selling ages ago but hang around due to obsessive fans still streaming them. It’s Justin for a second week on top, holding off the highest new entry, the best album track not charted from the Pet Shop Boys Super, Burn, an EDM disco gem, and a much better choice of single (as would number 4) than the official single up to 30. Even Jean-Michel Jarre’s collaboration is at 24, outperforming it. Talking of J-MJ, his Cyndi Lauper track hits the top 10, his first (I think) in 39 years, and Cyndi’s first over 20 years. The top 10 is eurovision dominated, Dami Im at 3, Barei up to 6, and Poli Genova up to 7 swapping with Amir at 9.
In at 33 it’s the cool Otra Era from Javiera Mena, a lovely EDM gem from the Chilean female EDM artist. Keeping the music international Yothu Yindi has a dance mix of his aboriginal-based Treaty up into the 75. Red Hot Chili Peppers go top 40 for the first time in years, extending their run to over 20 years, while there’s a sudden release surprising me, Sigma and Take That, who knew! It’s good though. ABC get a second chart entry, this one from Take That’s Gary Barlow’s project to the Eddie The Eagle Movie, Fly. Living Inside My Heart joins Viva Love at 12, to give ABC a Lexicon Of Love-stylee revival just as I paid a fortune for good seats for their Orchestral tour of the original album and it’s forthcoming sequel. Also from that album, Howard Jones returns for the first time in over 20 years too at 90, Eagle Will Fly Again, while Ricard Ashcroft is back 19 years since his debut number one, first of 3 (2 with The Verve, one solo). Finally, The Tubes get an uncharted oldie some 36 years since their last new one and 39 years since their first chart hit.

It’s Justin Timberlake at 1, fresh off Eurovision and sealing the Eurovision invasion of my chart following a great contest, highly entertaining, if it was marred by a rubbish new voting system which robbed the real winners (Australia or Russia, depending on whether you choose the previous system or the public vote). Justin has already had 3 solo toppers, 1 with Madonna, and one with ‘NSync, for a total of 6 in 16 years. Australian Dami Im is in at 3 with the highest new entry Sound Of Silence, an awesome vocal performance at Eurovision, with France’s Amir leaping to 7, Bulgaria’s Poli Genova at 9 and Spain’s Barei at 11. Kygo gets another top 10, as do the Beatles, 49 years late (it was never a single, and I’ve never charted the classic Sgt Pepper track before) and 48 years since they topped my first chart. The act that just keeps on giving half a century on!
ABC go top 20, a run of 35 years, and it’s both a Jean-Michel Jarre and Pet Shop Boys mini-invasion, the PSB’s with their new single at 50, and also with JMJ at 38, one of the best tracks off Jean-Michel’s new album. It’s 39 years since Oxygene Part IV peaked at 2, and he has 3 new entries this week, with Cyndi lauper’s thumping EDM track at 29, and a quirky semi-novelty with Primal Scream lower down. It’s the Pet Shop Boys with a spot of revenge on top – back in 1988 Left To My Own Devices knocked off I Wish U Heaven from the top spot (back up to 4 28 years later), and in 1989 Sheena Easton (and Prince’s) 101 knocked off the Pet Shop Boys It’s Alright from the top spot. Now 101 gets knocked off by the Pet Shop Boys Say It To Me, and the Pet Shop Boys hold off Sign O’ The Times at 2 – the second time it has hit 2.
Biggest climber is up 72 places to give Josef Salvat a second top 40 and first top 5, with the fab Paradise. In at 20 Kygo is back for a 6th time, this time with Kodaline Raging in. Joining the 80’s acts, ABC leap from 93 to 28 with Viva Love, as Andy Bell of Erasure becomes the latest “Fly” album veteran to grab a return, at 82. 90’s veterans also join the club, Justin Timberlake at 32 with CAN’T STOP THE FEELING! No need to shout Justin, I noticed it..! 19 years of entries for JT, Red Hot Chili Peppers are also back and dark and now well over 26 years into a chart run, albeit only at 100 so far.
Beyonce is also into her 18th year, and grabs another entry to join her other Lemonade track, Daddy Lessons is the new one. Beyonce samples Andy Williams’ Can’t Get Used To Losing You on her biggest UK singles hit from the album Hold Up, but Andy outdoes her (quite rightly) with his version of the classic song The Impossible Dream – currently featuring in an advert – from the musical Man Of La Mancha. Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine last charted with it over 20 years ago. Another advert song (and movie, thanks to Ryan Reynolds) from obscure early 70’s act Penny And The Quarters hits the top 50, it’s quite lovely, sounds older, and was never released until the 21st century, making unlikely success for the surviving then-teenage non-pop-star band members.
Vaults is also back (with Gorgon City) following her chart-topper, and Billy Ocean returns after a break of over 20 years (barring oldies) with a cover of a Moody Blues 60’s classic album track which was a UK hit for the The Four Tops in a brilliant 1971 version. (A) Simple Game topped my chart that year, Billy’s version isn’t up to that, but good to have him back 42 years since his chart debut – he made my top 10 twice in 1974 with On The Run, under the band-name Scorched Earth, a fantastic track that remains obscure but is as good as anything he has recorded, a terrific vocal performance and a dramatic rock melodrama.

It’s the Pet Shop Boys…at 2 for a 3rd week! Prince replaces himself on top, sort of, with his fabulous gift to Sheena Easton, one hundred nights without you babe, just won’t do. Still love it. So it gets a second week on top of my chart after a gap of 27 years. In the week when rumours about the death of Prince surfaced – and given his recent health and chest problems and religious convictions, I suspected that the reference in Sign O’ The Times (up to 3) to a big disease with a skinny name might become a sad reference – he continues to dominate my chart. I Wish U Heaven, Prince.
Highest new entry at 6 is Clare Maguire with Elizabeth Taylor. Not featuring the late great Liz, of course, she didn’t sing much as far as I know, but it’s a great ballad. Clare is just (DJ) Fresh off a hit record (How Love Begins, which went top 10 here) but was sadly uncredited for her vocals, but she’s charted before dating back to 2011 and The Shield And The Sword. Gwen Stefani grabs another quick top 10 with her album track (and hopefully future single) Where Would I Be – skatastic. There’s another faded entering the top 20 – Kallay Saunders Band – as Above And Beyond do what it says on the label, and shoot up into the 40, as do Lady Antebellum, new with a dance guest vocal for Audien.
Fifth Harmony finally get a top 40 hit here, and Paul McCartney’s great track from his best album (1974’s Band On The Run) is about to get a full release remixed drastically by Timo Maas and James Teej, complete with dance buzz around it. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five is fab. There are two Eurovision new entries from 2016 joining the Spanish entry from 2015 (Amir, Joe and Jake, and Edurne respectively), as old faves garbage return, Josef Salvat gets a second entry, and 80’s classic faves ABC return to their polished class soul sound (sadly minus Trevor Horn, who would have really done the business – as can be seen on Inga Humpe’s track higher up). That gives them a sweet 35 years of hits. J-Lo is back after a gap, and there’s a debut for Weather Report, and their 1977 jazz classic Birdland. It wasn’t eligible for my chart at the time, but my College room-mate in 1977 played their album. So, almost 40 years late, but better late than never, though the song did chart in the early 80’s in a vocal version for Manhattan Transfer.
