It’s Pet Shop Boys on top for a 2nd week, fresh as I get back from 5 days in Salou on rollercoasters again (one is never too old for a cheap thrill) and having read the Johnny Marr autobiog – Pet Shop Boys feature, as they should when I saw him helping them out at The Albert Hall charity gig last summer with Suedehead. Footsteps would have fit in beautifully.

Evangeline shoots up to 4, and is growing on me bigtime, clubtastic, and The Killers climb 22 to grab a second consecutive top 10, some 13 years on from first doing that! As I enjoy a nice round-robin of reference, Brandon Flowers is a huge Pet Shop Boys and Smiths fan, and Suedehead was Morrisey’s debut solo single after The Smiths split up and Johnny Marr moved on to Electronic with Bernard Sumner and guests Pet Shop Boys.

Reggaeton Lento was getting some cabaret evening cover in the holiday hotel in the evenings, along with Despacito and other Latin hits, and theatrical musical Cabaret songs – which was a cue for Liza Minelli, who also had an album produced and songs written by Pet Shop Boys in 1989. Life is circular.

17th September 2017

It’s the Pet Shop Boys gorgeous Footsteps on top, a 1999 album track that should have been a single, but in those days I only allowed one album track per album to chart – these days I’m going with around 3, and Nightlife made the charts again recently, so that’s an excuse to finally get it on top, as it would have done in late ’99 had I changed my chart rules. That’s a 44th topper, and one not far behind from the same album at 4.

The late Glen Campbell makes the top 10 47 years since the first time (it topped my chart in 1970), and Katy Perry finally goes top 10 after 14 weeks on my chart, Swish! Thirty Seconds From Mars, the band of The Joker, at least the Suicide Squad version, is the highest entry at 19. Any DC comics connection is good enough for me! ZAYN and Sia rocket up to 30, and Sparks get 2 new entries, the best new tracks off Hippopotamus, which was getting heavily pushed on posters all over Copenhagen back in July, so a bit of a wait! Suedey entered Edith Piaf into Buzzjack Song Contest, and had it been the studio version it would have done much better. Sparks, 43 years of charting here and still going strong.

10th September 2017

It’s Paloma Faith grabbing a 4th chart-topper, as she enters the UK sales top 40 with the fab Crybaby (but not the steaming chart), just keeping ahead of the highest new entry from a Pet Shop Boys mini-invasion – all previously uncharted tracks from Nightlife Deluxe Edition – with Footsteps at 2, a totally gorgeous genteel night-themed song which could easily have been in the musical Closer To Heaven – as in fact could that track entering at 33, and the track intended for it (but dropped) Tall Thin Men at 13.

Two Minogues in the top 10, George Michael returns with a Listen Without Prejudice era non-album track, here remixed by Nile Rodgers, new at 35, while an unreleased leaked ballad is at 62. Needs releasing. Shania Twain bounds into the top 40 for her 2nd of the year, London Grammar get a 3rd, while Steely Dan return for the first time in decades following the death of Walter Becker, here with my UK 1975 Top 10 (and their best track) Do It Again – and that took 3 years to scrape into the official UK top 40.

Sia’s back yet again, non-stop Dusk Till Dawn hitmaker really, with Zayn – or ZAYN! – making 3 One Direction-member tracks in the chart. Never would have thought! U2 scrape in with their new lead album track. Scrape is the right word, it sounds very U2 on first hearing (which is OK by me), but a bit lacking something compared to previous album lead singles.

3rd September 2017

It’s Galveston for a 3rd week on top in a pretty static top 5, but with a hot new entry for Paloma Faith returning with a fab song Crybaby in at 7 giving her 8 years of top 10 hits since New York topped my chart. 8 top 10’s and 3 number one’s later and she’s back. P!nk finally gets back into the top 10, her 10th at least.

Little Mix replace themselves in the top 20, and Saint Etienne rocket into the 20, at least their 8th since 1993, plus a chart-topper for Sarah Cracknell. Pet Shop Boys have 3 expanded versions of 3 of their more recent albums with loads of fab tracks, several I don’t know and didn’t own. The first album I played is 1999’s Nightlife, so in at 22 is a total showtune written for their musical (but dropped), Tall Thin Men is amusingly short and fab. AT 27 they have mashed up 2 Elton John songs, got him to sing on the new versions…and never released it. Pretty good version, and both songs made my top 10 in their original versions.

Clare Maguire is back with a remixed version of previous 2016 top 10 Elizabeth Taylor, Swish Swish re-enters for Katy Perry now I know it’s all about Taylor Swift. Now I like Taylor’s songs, but let’s be honest she seems to slag off everyone she meets in her songs, so turnabout is fair play, she started it. So there, nyah, na, nana naaa. One would hope she might grow up and write about something important instead. Katy does and sticks up for the non-rich to boot.

In at 49, and here’s a chart return I never thought I’d see – it’s Bucks Fizz! OK, Bobby G is missing, which is a shame as he owns the name and his vocals were a key part, but hey ho, pretty much them 36 years on. They had a decade-run in my charts, and 3 chart-toppers.

27th August 2017

Back on top for a second week, it’s the Jimmy Webb classic for the late great Glen, and in the same week Texas (including Galveston) gets whacked by a massive hurricane. Train get yet another top 5 single here, 16 years since Drops Of Jupiter peaked at 10, at least the 8th or 9th time they’ve done the top 10 and the 6th top 5. In at 10, it’s a 90’s-themed invasion as I come across an unreleased 1999 gem, purely by accident looking for an entry to the Buzzjack Song Contest – it’s Madonna doing a version of a wonderful gentle ballad from Abba’s final studio album. It was intended to go on the Music album, and Madonna really should have followed through with it, it’s charming.

New at 20, my 1991 chart-topper for the KLF returns, as TV pushes sales up of what of their back-catalogue is available to buy (clue: very little). Fortunately I already have pretty much everything of theirs I wanted to own, not to mention earlier stuff from the 80’s, and as part of the band Brilliant, who were pretty fine. 3am eternal!

Big jumps for Dua Lipa to 22, Callum Beattie to 30, and a host of current chart hits into my 40 – that hasn’t happened for some time! Rod Stewart’s 1978 chart-topper is also back, regarded as his cheesiest track generally, it always had that great riff going for it, and this time it gets the DNCE treatment. It really should say DNCE featuring Rod Stewart as it’s very much in their style, not Rod’s…..

20th August 2017

It’s Zoot Woman on top, the British electronica have been releasing tracks for 20 years without me ever noticing until they teamed up with Kylie – so wham, only 2 decades of waiting! Kylie meanwhile gets an 11th number one since her first in 1994 and her most-recent in 2014. Ol’ Kylie has had well over 30 top 10 hits here, so you can see I quite like her.

Glen Campbell still has a big presence on my chart, and the chart is so crammed with great stuff that good singles I still like have been pushed out (including several Glen Campbell tracks). Frankly I could easily do a top 120 or so of tracks I like right now (If I had the time!), and every track in my chart is underperforming compared to where they deserve to be.

P!nk has a big climb into the 20, as Lana Del Ray returns to the 20 for the 2nd time this year and thereby giving Stevie Nicks a top 20 for the first time in 6 years (not including Fleetwood Mac). Dannii Minogue also leaps to 21, chasing her sis, with what is shockingly her first top 40 track in 12 years. Highest new entry is a fab SEEB remix of a new Mick Jagger track, at 40, his first chart entry outside the Stones in 13 years, and his first top 40 since Gosh Knows When…

Little Mix go all latin pop with CNCO and grab a second chart hit at 42, Dua Lipa has a big climb into the 50, The Killers also grab a second entry, and Beth Ditto improves on her minor first single off the new album, entering higher than Fire. Saint Etienne keep the regular run of hits a-coming, 25 years and counting, and 2 ex-One Direction boys enter proving that the better-quality and more-varied solo material of all 5 members has already out-done everything they did as a band – an underwhelming 7 or 8 chart entries and none of them going top 40, I think.

13th August 2017

It’s the late great Glen Campbell at 1, spearheading a posthumous invasion of old tracks and one new one. Galveston hit my number 2 when I was doing my first occasional chart dabblings age 10 and 11, this one was summer of ’69, and a Jimmy Webb classic. It was also on the first pop album my parents bought for me, so it’s pretty appropriate that Galveston now takes the record for longest-wait to top my charts, over 48 years, on his 12th chart-topper.

Second-highest charting Glen song is his most recent number one for me, 2014, and his single off his last EP with lyrics that break the heart with his inverted alzheimers love-song to his wife, knowing he soon wouldn’t remember her – I’m Not Gonna Miss You is high emotion. Even without Glen’s death it would be a busy chart – there are loads bubbling-under – so big climbs for Kungs new track up from 62 to 4 with some help for Olly Murs, equalling their huge hit from last year, Kylie gets another number 2 to add to her long list, and Dragonette get a first top 10 up to 8.

Empire Of The Sun have had previous top 10’s, but not for a while, and ditto Coldplay (but who never have a long break away). Highest new song is Train at 19, also top 10 regulars, though they have to climb to the top, while DJ Licious is in at 25. Rednex get a third top 40 some 17 years late on it’s original release and 23 years since the last one. Pink is back, following her top 10 (here only) earlier this year with SIA, and Danni Minogue joins her sister in the chart for the first time since they did that xmas duet track together a couple of years ago. It’s 26 years since she debuted.

Copenhagen for a City Denmark break

6th August 2017

It’s the joyful hook-driven pop flop of Galantis for one week only on top, knocking off the late Chester B from Linkin Park after a 2-week run. I can say one-week-only as the late great Glen Campbell died after I had finished this chart (running late due to a Salou, Spain break), and a host of his classics are in the itunes chart today – and in mine on Sunday.

Here for now, though, Zoot Woman takes Kylie back into the top 10 after being absent a year or two, for a whopping and frankly unbelievable almost 30 years since she was so lucky for the first time! TLC get a second top 10 of the year, and a second time for Sunny, the song. Boney M did it 40 years back. Big climbs for Coldplay into the 20 spanning the 21st century, and OMD, 37 years since Messages first did it.

The Weeknd keeps his run of big hits going, 5 years or so into his chart career here, and highest new entry is Dragonette, and a Star wars-related song. Darth Vader follows where Meco started 40 years ago when his disco theme to the debut movie topped my charts. Finally Rednex appear again after a chart break of well over 20 years. Swedish yee-haws all round.

30th July 2017

yes, it’s a second week for the much missed Linkin Park singer, Numb holds on and keeps some Buzzjack Song Contest entries out of the top 3 (KING PLAGUE’s Ave Maria rework, and Union’s hook-filled pop goodie) and holds off from Galantis, grabbing a top 3 for the first time, and quite why it’s not getting saturation airplay is a mystery to me.

John Otway gets a first top 10 after 40 years of trying, and Syml does what The Chordettes failed to do last year – grab a top 10 – although as an oldie The Chordettes had a tougher time of it. TLC make it 2 in a row top 20’s, Blondie also grab another, The Script their top 20 first for 3 or 4 years, ditto Empire Of The Sun, and Kasabian also ditto.

Coldplay, Lana Del Ray, Stevie Nicks, Kylie Minogue and The Weeknd are all familiar top 40 returnees, and all have topped my chart, some of them many many times.

23rd July 2017

In the week of the tragic loss of Chester Bennington, I had to finally give the epic Numb the love I didn’t give at the time, 14 years ago (I was in a bad place that year and couldnt cope with depressing music) – it only peaked at 30 in my charts, and it took the Jay-Z mash-up to take it to 15 on a long chart run to see what I’d missed. So, 16 years after In The End hit 7 in my charts (and re-enters at 15 here), Faint did ditto a few years later, and Steve Aoki took A Light That Never Comes to 5 4 years ago, Linkin Park finally get a number one here, knocking off the still-superb Adam Lambert track.

The Union climb fast into the top 5, Syml into the top 20, and the highest new new entry, as opposed to older tracks, is from The Script at 27 – it never rains on Danny, it seems, but hey, for TLC it’s Sunny – a fab reworking of the 1966 Bobby Hebb classic (who features on the track along with an Earth Wind & Fire sample – September). Last in my charts courtesy of Boney M 40 years ago! OMD got top 40, along with a host of returnees, but they also have another new track in at 55 – the new album title track, The Punishment of Luxury, while The Weeknd makes it 5 in a row off Starboy, Rockin’ in at 48.

Coldplay at back with a goodie at 53, Miracles, and Kylie is also back for her 31st year of chart hits here, assisting Zoot Woman at 58, as Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks assists Lana Del Ray on her 3rd of the year, nicel leapfrogging her two Mac compadres in the process for 41 years of charting. Enrique’s Latin smash also enters at last (I’ve given in, I’m bound to hear it next week on a Spanish theme park family break), and gives him 18 years-worth of hits, loads of ’em. You want longevity though? The Selecter have been away for a while, since their 2-tone heyday – Pauline Black has always popped up here and there over the years in the media or touring, but they haven’t troubled my charts since 1980, or solo Pauline since 1982’s Shoorah Shoorah – so a gap of 35 years, that’s one of the longest gaps ever for a returning act with new material.

Adam Lambert returns to the top for a second week, pushing off Grace Slick’s classic obscurity after only one week on top. UNKLE do a fab Lee Hazelwood impression, plus cinematic arrangement and leapfrog the man himself with his 50-years-old classic. The highest new entry is Galantis, with a killer pop tune and hook. Instant fave, and a return to the top 10 for them, at 7. It’s Ave Maria – trip-hop style – in at 10, and just lovely for King Plague, who has a very catchy name – Belaruse female musician apparently, though info is hard to come by.

In at 12, 40-years-old, it’s an orchestral wonder from John Otway, dating from the time of his first appearance in my chart with Wild Willy Barrett, Really Free. Geneve is still lovely, even without a Willy. Scissor Sisters have had 5 chart-toppers since debuting with one of ’em in 2004, Comfortably Numb, and last made the top 20 in 2012 with Let’s Have A Kiki. Good to have them back, albeit guesting.

Syml fronts band Barcelona (where I’ll be popping through in 2 weeks – the city that is), and hails from Seattle, which accounts for the sultry moody version of the 50’s pop classic that recently charted here for the Chordettes, which brings back magic memories of the 50’s for me – via Back To The Future of course, I’m not that old! Ditto the current advert-song from Tony Dallara, a fab vintage Italian croon almost as old as The Chordettes.

Empire Of The Sun return, and so do Pnau. Nick Littlemore features in both bands. Pnau have topped my charts with their Elton John sampling tracks, and the other Empire member topped my charts as a member of The Sleepy Jackson. There’s another Nancy & Lee classic entering (as a Tammy Wynette duet cover they made the definitive version of) – but this one is Tammy covering herself from 1973 with hubbie George Jones, a version that is new to me, a lovely country duet of My Elusive Dreams.

9th July 2017

For the second week in a row, and the third chart-topper in a row, it’s new at one – this time for Grace Slick’s 1980 worldwide flop (but a minor chart hit for me) which I rediscovered a few years back and fell in love with big time, so around a 37 wait to reach the top of my charts. It was close though, as Adam lambert is still strong. Liam Gallagher gets 2 consecutive top 10’s – it’s like the old Oasis days!

After 10 weeks Despacito hits a new peak of 11, slow climbing which is appropriate given the title, and as a watched a large of crowd of English London Pride attendees swaying along in the street and not being able to sing the lyrics, it made even more sense why it’s so popular. In at 14, another one that suddenly made sense to me once I heard it properly, French Montana being the highest new track to enter with Unforgettable, a great record.

Down t’bottom end, Blondie grab a 3rd chart entry of 2017, getting very close to 40 years of chart hits here, while Martine Mcutcheon is back 16 years since she last troubled my charts, and LeAnn Rimes a nearly as long 14 years. I do enjoy unexpected comebacks!

2nd July 2017

In from nowhere it’s Adam Lambert with his ambitious and fabulous Two Fux, far and away his best ever record (and he’s had a few goodies). In rhythm it reminds me of a 90’s gem from ex-New Kid On The Block Jordan Knight’s 1998 number 2 (here) Give It To Me, but it is sassier and more swirling. Adam’s been having occasional entries here since 2010, so at long last a biggie. That means The Killers get close but no cigar, The Man is great, much better than the ever present Mr Brightside which is outselling it in the UK charts and within 50,000 sales (not streaming) of a million! I just don’t get it!

Second highest new entry is a 2nd top 20 track for Liam Gallagher, one of his best ballads, Chinatown at 16. Katy Perry rockets into the 20 with Roulette as Swish swish stays ahead, and a new entry for Calvin Harris featuring her at 58 gives her 5 consecutive tracks on the list. My rules won’t be amended to exclude artists with more than 3….

Imelda gets a 2nd top 20 of the year, QOTSA get a first one ever, and in at 39 Shania Twain is back and jolly as ever after a gap of 13 years, she topped my chart in 1999 though That Don’t Impress Me Much as much as almost 20 years of chart-spanning. Rufus Wainwright covers a Beatles classic, used on a TV advert, while Foo Fighters and Imagine Dragons add to the long run of chart entries, the Foo’s covering 20 years, Imagine Dragons 5 or 6 years.

My 2004 Charts – Sept to Dec

SEPTEMBER 2004

The 60’s oldies continue to dominate my chart, R Dean Taylor grabbing another 3 weeks on top, which leaves Morrissey peaking at 3 and denied a 3-week run on top, and Jojo, who declares “Leave (Get Out)” also at 3 as she is also denied a chart-topper for the same reason. Happily, Robbie Williams is a bit more assertive as he tunes his Radio in at 1, his 9th number one (or 11th including Take That) and a good pop romp.

Kanye West peaks at 4 with the record of the month, the one that really SHOULD have been a number one, while Duran Duran have a proper comeback (again) reaching up for the Sunrise at 6, 23 years on from Planet Earth. That’s nowt though, Brian Wilson, genius of the Beach Boys hits 5 with a new solo track Soul Searching, his first actual new Top 5 material err, ever, cos the Brian Wilson Beach Boys tracks pre-date my charts. Yikes!

I Monster get a top 10 entry with Hey Missus, always was partial to them, while The Killers get a proper hit with All These Things That I’ve Done, which reminded me a bit of Queen as I heard it on the radio passing through Bath at the time. 12 is under-rating, though, due to oldies, it really should be Top 3. Alison Krauss, the woman that convinced me country music had a heart again, bluegrasses her way to 7, ain’t she the Lucky One!

Rocketing to 18 it’s Jamie Scott. Just. Actually not just Jamie Scott, it’s the start of a pretty big career. Who he? The man behind future number 2 (in my charts) Annie You Save Me (as Graffiti6), and the man behind hits for Enrique (Heartbeat), Matt Cardle (Loving You), The Vamps (Wild Heart), and most of One Direction’s Midnight Memories album.

October 2004

More oldies chart-toppers of previously uncharted tracks, courtesy album-chart compilations: The Four Tops classic version of Walk Away Renee from 1967 featuring the voice of one of the greatest singers of all-time, Levi Stubbs just breaks my heart when he sings, and John Denver’s 1975 ode to undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, Calypso, both terrific singles. That leaves only one 2004 track from Embrace, Gravity on top. Other biggies come from Jojo, I Monster, U2, Gwen Stefani, The Beautiful South covering ELO, Scissor Sisters and Girls Aloud, but most are overshadowed somewhat by the Motown double-A-side reissue campaign which continues to dominate the chart and pushes the new stuff down a few places lower than they ought to be.

NOVEMBER 2004

Gwen Stefani hit the top spot, going where No Doubt couldn’t quite, with the fabulous What You Waiting For. She just keeps Kylie off yet another chart-topper as her Scissor Sisters track I Believe In You settles for 2 before both tracks are shoved aside by my 1969 Number One anthem, the 3rd single I ever bought (in Singapore) Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman. Once upon a time very famous, it needs another boost for new generations. Tyler James, friend of Amy Winehouse, gets a top 10 debut hit, as Jamie Scott (future One Direction hit songwriter) falls.

Hard to believe, but R Kelly is in the top 5 again, seems to be in there for Autumn every 5 years going back to 1994. Happy People, apparently. Kelis and Andre 3000 have a millionaire at 9, Morrissey does what he did for Nancy Sinatra, and takes Let Me Kiss You into the top 10, and Dannii Minogue gets one of her periodic dance hits, this time with Flower Power at 5 helping You Won’t Forget About Me peak. Scissor Sisters also pop back at 3 with an album track that’s better than almost all of the official singles, the gorgeous It Can’t Come Quickly Enough.

My 2004 Charts – May to August

Image

Me at 46..Puerto de Mogan Gran Canaria

May 2004

Another bad month this year as my grandad died suddenly on Bank Holiday Saturday night while I was in London. My parents had driven up to Mansfield to stay with grandma by the time I got home. I went up the following weekend and as I’d already booked a holiday for the middle of May, with a friend who wouldn’t have gone on his own, grandma told me to go rather then the funeral, and instead I went to the memorial service the week after. Didn’t stop me feeling bad though.

That’s why I was again opting for oldies in my charts again, Elton John’s non-UK hit from 1970, the soaring gospel gorgeous Border Song, and The Shadows best record, the lovely Wonderful Land instrumental, the oldest recording to top my chart to that date at 42 years. Finally, the Supremes 60’s classic You Keep Me Hangin’ On topped the chart at the end of the month for the second time (the 80’s was the last time) and their 4th re-issued topper (the Diana Ross line-up) or 5th (for the Mary Wilson line-up). Other oldies from Lou Read (remixed) and Abba (30th anniversary re-issue of Waterloo) join them in the top 10.

Current songs that unfairly got knocked further down the chart: The Rasmus, Sarah McLachlan, Anastacia (2 weeks at 3 with Left Outside Alone, and would otherwise have had a number one), Goldfrapp’s Strict Machine at 9, Usher’s Yeah (at 4), Maroon 5’s This Love at 8, Christina Milian’s Dip It Low with a 3-week run at 4, Jet’s fabulous Are You Gonna Be My Girl (peaked at 2, would have topped the chart), Scissor Sisters Laura (at 7). At least all the oldies kept Lostprophets out of my Top 40, with their least-bad record. They were consistently crap, and it turns out one of them was morally far worse than any of their records.

JUNE 2004

Number Ones this month: a Motown classic from The Supremes at long last tops my chart, I’d known it since I was a nought but a kiddie, and it’s a great record, still the definitive version. Then the danced-up version of Lou Reed’s Satellite Of Love gets to the top 30 years on since I first went a bit mad on the original (but which didn’t qualify to chart oddly). Finally, Will Young gets a chart-topper, his one and only, and it’s none of his famous ones, it’s the delicate Friday’s Child which did the trick. Subtle and lovely.

Bad news for Christina Milian who gets stuck at 3 for most of the month with the good Dip It Low, and Scissor Sisters Laura which peaks at 4. George Michael is Flawless at 8, 22 years into his career, and the very late uncharted great Nick Drake gets a top 20 Magic hit. Natashe Bedingfield gets another Top 10 Single, and Britney’s Number 1 follow-up, the sublime haunting Everything is at 5.

The Divine Comedy get yet another Top 10 hit (in my charts, at least) with their Absent Friends, and Helicopter Girl also flies up to 9 with Angel City. In at 4 from nowhere, though, it’s Polyphonic Spree and Hold Me Now, never as big as it deserved. One of the most unlikely duets? Nancy Sinatra and Morrissey, he even gave away a great song for her new fab album, Let Me Kiss You. The Streets Dry Your Eyes mate, at 14, and that song used in a recent jail parody amusing mini-movie (Drogostea Din Tei) yodels in at 16 just ahead of Bowie’s last material for a decade, Rebel Never gets Old, and sneaking in it’s Pharrell, Maybe, N.E.R.D.

JULY 2004

Britney gets her 4th and final Number One with the gorgeous Everytime, though Will Young’s gorgeous Friday’s Child pops back up again too before Anastacia’s Sick And Tired goes one higher than I’m Outta Love to give her a chart-topper. Hmmm. All gay icons on top…..

Kylie gets to 9 with some Chocolate, 16 years of hits, while Nancy & Morrissey go top 10 for 33 years and 21 years of hits each. That’s over half a century! But that’s not all, Nancy Sinatra is also back with Lee Hazelwood 33 years since their last new duet charted, with the whimsical Is making A Little Love Out Of The Question. Morrissey’s also back with his best single in a decade, First Of The Gang To Die at 26.

Shaznay Lewis, meanwhile, brings another Top 10 for ex-All Saints acts, and Shapeshifter’s excellent Lola’s Theme sits at 2.

AUGUST 2004

A Motown double-sided reissue campaign dominates my charts this month, knocking off Anastacia, who’s mighty Sick And Tired of it – but I don’t care, that BRILLIANT Isley Brothers pair of classics, This Old Heart Of Mine and Behind A Painted Smile get a 3rd chart run, from the 60’s, 1976 (when they hit the top together) and returning to Number 1 23 years later. Smile needs to be heard LOUD in a club, so exciting. Bung in 2 Four Tops classics at 3, Jimmy Ruffin at 8, Temptations at 15, Smokey Robinson at 25, Stevie Wonder 29, Edwin Starr at 12, Martha Reeves at 17, The Supremes at 3, and most of all, the Northern Soul double-pairing R. Dean Taylor classics There’s A Ghost In My House and Gotta See Jane, both returning to the top spot 30 years on, even though they were 60’s tracks and R. Dean was white, they hit the spot.

Yet more oldies, though, as the Big O gets an instant hits album number one, as the timeless It’s Over grabs 2 weeks on top 44 years late. If you ever want a break-up record to express how miserable you feel – play this loudly and cry along with it. Awesome! All these oldies, of course, mean contemporary records suffer much lower chart peaks, sadly, but there’s still plenty to mention:

Nancy Sinatra is back with Morrissey at 8, on his Let Me Kiss You, so good he released his own version after nancy unfairly didn’t get that comeback hit she deserved – this was her first new material to chart in an incredible 28 years. Morrissey, to double the unfairness of it all, would have had his first chart-topper with his best record in a decade, First Of The Gang To Die, first track off his terrif album, just as Nancy’s was off her terrif album. 4’s not bad, but what a pity, as he’s yet to top my chart. Nancy, meanwhile, is back with Lee Hazelwood on the album, and at 16 in my chart, cos he did all her classic records, bar one.

Natasha Bedingfield has These Words at 10, and shockingly Brian McFadden gets to 3 with the forgotten Real To Me, and that’s higher than any Westlife record. Dido’s Sand In My Shoes is ingrained (ouch!) at 5, it’s a great catchy pop track, while Maroon 5 meander in the 30’s. My advice is do a duet with Christina Aguilera! Straight in at 7, it’s the brilliant Jesus Walks, Kanye West at his best, and I’m shocked to see Kasabian at 45. Crikey is it really 10 years they’ve been having hits! Wow!
