My January 2024 Charts

7th January 2024

It’s 3 weeks on top for Lufthaus and Robbie and Sophie, as Sophie brings her 2001 chart-topper and track of the year back courtesy of a TV series (The Tourist) and a big global movie, Saltburn, Murder On The Dancefloor makes it a third chart run. New in at 2, Lindsey Buckingham topped my early 1982 chart with the fab Trouble, which is selling on itunes, no idea why though. Cyril goes top 10 which means Suzi Quatro gets a top 10 for the first time since Strict Machine in 2011, for a 51-year run of ’em, on and off. Chris Norman last did it in 1977 or so. Stumblin’ In didnt go top 10 first time round, though it should have.

This week we lost Glynis Johns at the age of 100, she was in Mary Poppins back in the day and was already around 40 then! In 1973 she starred in A Little Night Music on Broadway and the song Send In The Clowns was written specifically for her and her uniquely British vocal style. Nobody has done it better than she did. No-one. She wrings emotion out of every word and barely sings. Debuting 50-years-late at 47. David Soul also sadly died, he was huge in 1977, and his two hugest tunes pop back in for the first time in 47 years, Silver Lady and Don’t Give Up On Us.

That leaves 2 Britpop bands returning to my chart, both of them somewhat looked down on at the time and since really, but as I don’t care about Cool, I just know what I like, it’s nice to see them both back – Cast at 72 with Faraway charting for the first time this century after a gap of nearly 25 years, and a chart span of 35 years if we count The La’s (and I do). Kula Shaker have only been absent for a mere 17 years, but nabbed 2 chart-toppers back in the mid-nineties. Natural Magick is quite catchy.

14th January 2024

It’s 4 weeks on top for Immortal as Sophie Ellis-Bextor is everywhere – just not with this one sadly! There’s not much happening at the top end, but plenty of new entries, the highest from Teddy Swims as Lose Control gets a debut at 49. Others? The Black Keys return with a new goodie, Ella Henderson is never far away from a dance collab, this time Rudimental, ditto Alok with Bebe Rexha and UK Eurovision act Mae Muller is back to guesting.

Shaznay Lewis is back with some All Saints styled new music, that’s 27 years for her in my charts, Bright Light Bright Light keeps his chart run going, Ariane Grande returns, Alicia Keys is knocking on 25 years of action with her new one, and Dizzee Rascal returns to chart activity after a sizeable gap. Call me old fashioned but I will happily take his brand of rap-based music over some of the current big names.

21st January 2024

It’s 5 weeks on top for Immortal amongst a static top end, but there’s loads if new dance tracks jostling for attention and The Black Keys rocket up to 8 with Stay High. Kaiser Chiefs are straight in at 19 with an unusual single, Shades Of Love, love the strings on it. 20 years 9f top 20s for Ricky and co. New at 20 leapfrogging her alarm clock, Sheryl Crow makes it 30 years of top 20s with the sprawling rock fabness of Am I Getting Through.

Bananarama make it 43 years of chart entries as Supernova is new at 40, outpeaking the first single from their latest compilation album, very Pet Shop Boys I think. At 45 Jennifer Lopez is back to have 26 years since I first bought one of her CD singles in Florida, Can’t Get Enough sounds not unlike an old single from 20 odd years back I can’t put my finger on. It might be I Wish Skee Lo or something similar.

X Ambassadors add to their run of entries with No Strings at 53, kings do a collab with David guetta and Izzy Bizu, all have charted before but this Cathy Dennis revamp gives monsieur guetta an extended run pushing 20 years or more. Bryn Christopher is back with a goodie, High, Johnny Mart knows The Answer – over 40 years of hits since This Charming Man!

Becky Hill adds to her back catalogue, Justin Timberlake returns low key and a bit Selfish for 25 years of chart entries since he was first NSync, which just leaves oldies back from pop star losses from Frank Farian Boney M mastermind and voice on the tracks returning here 45 years on, plus Nightflight To Venus the title track from the monster album my mum bought for her 40th birthday party, and which charts for the first time as album tracks were banned then. Folk singer Melanie topped my chart in 1972 with Brand New Key but I’ve opted for her best 2 ballads following her sad passing, and the lead singer if The Shangri Las has died, letting me debut the oddly dark Past Present and Future.

28th January 2024

It’s a mass top 10 clearout as Nero grabs a first chart-topper in 13 years of charting and 7 years on since the last top 10, with vocal assistance from Alana Watson on the drum n bass Blame You, straight in from nowhere holding off a challenge from WE ARE ONE an a banging Spitfire new in at 2, a debut for them. Nothing But Thieves topped my chart on Purple Disco Machine’s Something On My Mind, and both of them debut this week, the former at 4 on the exciting Oh No :: He Said What? A 4th chart entry for them while PDM’s Beat Of Your Heart at 73 are pushing 10 chart entries in just 5 years.

Kaiser Chiefs leap to 5 Burning In Flames, the same position How 2 Dance peaked at in 2023, for a 19th chart hit in 19 years, 10 of them top 10, 12 of them top 12. I find those stats pleasingly appropriate. Sheryl Crow gets a first top 10 since 2018, 30 years of charting, but never got higher than number 5, Summer Day in 2010. X Ambassadors grab a 3rd top 10 since Renegades debuted in 2015, No Strings, and Cathy Dennis’ All Night Long gets revamped at 10 for Kungs (4th top 10 in 8 years) David Guetta (at least 12 top 10’s in 21 years) and Izzy Bizu (2nd top 10 in 7 years).

Rita Ora has a fab return with Shape Of Me, hooking up with Keith Urban, who’s rarely out of my charts the last 2 or 3 years. She’s been away as lead artist for 7 years, on her 7th lead artist track since 2012, and her highest-peaking with Shape Of Me. Highest climber is Justin Timberlake for 22 years of solo charting, that’s just Selfish! Pet Shop Boys have a new single out ahead of an album in April, and have a very lowkey debut at 60 for Loneliness, thought Rent is also back after a gap of 37 years lower down thanks to Saltburn. No other act has as many new tracks charting for me in 56 years of personal charts, though, so I doubt they are too fussed, but it extends their run to 39 years.

Other newies: current UK chart-topper Noah kahan finally drops in with his 2nd chart hit, The Zutons return after a gap of 16 years for a 5th chart entry in 18 years, Elbow are back after a 7-year break for a chart span of 22 years, and Sparks chart another oldie that has never charted before. They don’t like to Dick Around.

My September 2021 Charts

5th September 2021

It’s been almost 40 years, but Abba have returned with new material and a new hologram tour and a new album, and I’m emotional at the impossible happening. No act has ever the sheer consistency in my charts that Abba have had – Waterloo topped my charts instantly, and from Mamma Mia onwards every single they released topped my charts – so technically they have had 45 years without failing to top my charts now that I Still Have Faith In You, a gorgeous Frida-vocal ballad brimming with emotion and acknowledging the passing of the years, is straight in at 1. Except that Don’t Shut Me Down, Agnetha’s lead poppier track is kept at 2 for now, so that instantly also ruins their record 45-years unless it hits the top eventually. It’s Abba’s 33rd chart-topper including album tracks and rarities, and the quality of the new music surpasses my hopes, and I feel like I’m 16 to 24 again getting excited by a new Abba single. Typical! Just like buses, you wait 40 years and 2 come along at once!

So that’s bad luck to Majid Jordan and Keane who would otherwise have been battling for the top spot, Majid out-doing The Weeknd on his sound-alike fab track, and Keane’s catalogue oldie giving them a 5th top 5, including 2 chart-toppers. Abba’s stat achievements include a record official singles run of 22 number ones, a record gap of nearly 37 years between new material hitting number one after the last official new material hit number one, though this does exclude solo stuff (Agnetha has topped my charts in the 00’s) old album tracks and re-issues and unreleased material. It also means Abba take the new record for longest span of number ones with new material, stealing Sparks’ thunder, who topped in 1974 and again in 2019. Abba topped just before Sparks and now nearly two years longer than Sparks most-recent number one. Sparks are still big news, though, so they may yet get it back. Prob not though!

Lindsey Buckingham gets his first top 10 in 4 years (with Christine McVie), and first solo top 10 since 1982 when Trouble topped my charts. The year Abba last released a new single. Little Mix, meanwhile, get their first top 10 along with Anne-Marie, after 10 years of trying – their previous highest-placed was Wings at 12 in 2012. Anna Of The North finally goes top 20 on a 5th charting single, her lovely Cher cover, and new entries are thin on the ground: JLS return with a good track after 9 years away, Dorothy Moore’s 1976 soul goodie is back, all Misty Blue, and finally Sneaker Pimps drop back in unexpectedly – They topped my charts in 1997 with the wonderful 6 Underground, had a follow-up, and then nothing for 25 years. I mean, ordinarily that would be noteworthy impressive, but y’know, Abba…

12th September 2021

It’s two weeks on top for the life-affirming, love-lasting I Still Have Faith In You, Abba equalling weeks on top for SOS, Gimme Gimme, Gimme, I Have A Dream, Head Over Heels, and Under Attack for their official UK singles. That leaves Don’t Shut Me Down at 2, out-peaking only Ring Ring, People Need Love, So Long and I Do I Do I Do amongst official UK singles. Elton & Dua reach a new peak of 7 and Maisie Peters gets a first top 10 with Psycho.

The Stranglers get a first top 20 since 2004, and extends their top 20 chart-span to 44 years since Peaches/Go Buddy Go first did it. LP grabs a 3rd top 20, plus one chart-topper with Morrissey, and there’s a couple of Abba album tracks that have never charted for me, courtesy of Album Chart appearances for Voulez Vous and Arrival following the back catalogue boost last week: Dum Dum Diddle has a silly title but mentions Fiddle, one of my school nicknames (surname related not anything else!) and has a brilliant melody and arrangement, from the days I played Arrival to death, while As Good As New was lined up to be a single at one stage, but they were spoilt for choice on Voulez Vous and chose 4 others instead.

Dermot Kennedy gets a second chart entry with a goodie, James Blunt sneaks in yet another on his long chart list, Stereophonics return for a 24-year chart span, and surprisingly their first since 2013, Ella Henderson adds to her list, and Glass Animals debut. Amongst the oldies are a couple for Girls Aloud following the sad passing of Sarah Harding, another Rolling Stones goodie for Charlie Watts RIP, and The Adventures Broken Land returning as it started selling on itunes top 200 before they chopped it down to 100. Prob just as well as it’ll reduce the number of oldies in my chart…..

19th September 2021

It’s a 3rd week on top for Abba – but they replace themselves on top with Don’t Shut Me Down, Agnetha replacing Frida, and her first chart-topper as vocalist since 2004 when If I Thought You’d Ever Change Your Mind spent 2 weeks there. So Agnetha has 1 more chart-topper than the other Abba members’ new total of 34 number ones, and that means their run of chart-topping singles remains complete since late 1975.

Billy Idol makes it 3 top 10’s in a row, following on from his Miley Cyrus feature, and his remix of 1984 chart-topper Eyes Without A Face, and his 11th in total. LP grabs a 3rd top 10 with Goodbye, and Lindsey Buckingham gets 2 simultaneous top 20’s for the first time in his 40-year solo run, or 44-year Mac-included run. Sneaker Pimps have a huge climb for a 3rd top 40, HARLEE gets a 2nd, Rod Stewart gets the highest new entry as he’s back for One More Time at 35, still avoiding the horrible cover versions-pits he plummeted for most of the last 20 years, and making it a very satisfying exactly 50-years since Maggie May kicked it all off.

Talking of Class of 1971, I also didn’t expect Donny Osmond to be making my personal charts 50 years on, yet here he is doing a creditable attempt at recent pop styles of the likes of stars 40 years younger – old Don is the same age as me and it’s 50 years since The Osmonds TV show theme One Bad Apple became a fave. Speaking of veterans, Diane Warren drafts in some help to get her first chart entry as a credited artist after 36 years of hit-making songs, and many a chart-topper like Pet Shop Boys’ Numb.

Talking of veterans, again, Sting is back again, with a pleasant new track extending his solo run to 39 years and his Police-chart-bothering to 42 years since I was buying every new single they released. That leaves Blossoms back again with their lovely tuneful brand of old-fashioned guitar pop that died out about 12 years ago, seemingly never to return to streaming charts success. Their 9th chart entry since Charlemagne.

26th September 2021

It’s 2 weeks on top for Don’t Shut Me Down, equalling the 2 on top for I Still Have Faith In You, giving Abba 4 weeks in a row in the top spot for the first time since 1992 when Dancing Queen grabbed 8 weeks in a row. Billy Idol gets his highest charting solo track since 1984, and Tori Amos gets a 2nd top 10 and highest-ever chart-placing since 1994 with her gorgeous version of a very old classic British song. Liam Payne gets his second top 10 as lead artist, his first since his Rita Ora duet 3 years ago.

Sneaker Pimps get a 2nd top 20 23 years on from chart-topper 6 Underground, and highest new entry is Coldplay back on form at 18 with BTS along for a ride on their biggest-chart entry to date. My Universe is Coldplay’s first top 20 in 2 years. Debuting at 39, Great Van Fleet with a very Glam Prog Rock track, Heat Above, and Duran Duran get a second Anniversary entry of 2021 40 years on from Planet Earth. Kacey Musgraves returns, Johnny Marr extends his chart career to 38 years, and Lil Nas X belatedly gets a follow-up to Old Town Road with album track That’s What I Want.

My 2017 Charts – April – June

25th June 2017

It’s a second week on top for some classic Summer Wine – I should have had some in Copenhagen for the Midsummer Festival partying last week, but I was mainly walking round streets of old buildings, oops! I did note the music scene had become tropical housed, poor dears seem to have caught the bug. Even Drake’s Passionfruit had been covered and lost a lot of it’s fruityness. So not many new entries as I’ve been starved of the UK music scene. I also did Sweden, but it was Sunday and it was closed.

Main chart stat: OMD scrape in with a new track, for 37 years of entries…

Straight in from nowhere (because it’s topping the US advert music charts, and I follow Nancy on twitter – legend!) it’s Summer Wine from the same summer as Sgt Pepper, 50 years ago. Nancy & Lee just have a brilliant trippie back catalogue, cult faves over the decades without ever being huge as a duo – Lee was the gravel-voiced songwriter and producer, Nancy the sweet voice and groovy image. The song has topped my charts before, for The Corrs and Bono back in 2003, but the original is still the best, and gives them a first number one since Some Velvet Morning topped as an oldie in 2007 – I heard it blaring out from a boat at sea off the coast of Crete just after Lee died. Did You Ever was their first hit in 1971 in my charts, topping in 1977 as part of an EP, and Nancy also topped with her dad Frank (Somethin’ Stupid), with a Lee song (Boots), and a Bond theme (You Only Live Twice).

Glen goes up with all of his tracks, notably 1977 hit, Guardians soundtrack, Southern Nights finally breaking into the top 10 (the ragtime retro track peaked at 17). The Killers are back with a fab single, new in at 12, love it, and also Queens Of The Stone Age, back after a gap of 14 years, and with only their 3rd (and highest-charting) best-to-date track. Also new: Sigala & Ella Eyre, London Grammar, Olly & Louisa.

11th June 2017

I was too young to have started my charting 50 years ago – but had there been streaming available to me it’s pretty sure that The Beatles would have dominated both the real world and personal singles charts with Sgt Pepper. So it’s only fitting that She’s Leaving Home returns to number one 9 years since the last time it was on top, the best track on the classic album that can still top the UK album chart half a century on. Just to put that in some sort of perspective that would have been unthinkable in 1967, not least because recorded music didn’t stretch back half a century in any lastingly popular sense. Songs did, but not recorded music as an art form.

The Hollies finally get that Black Dress into my top 10 after 45 years patiently waiting, and in a quiet week for movement the highest new track is a Glen Campbell classic 60’s track that has never charted, but is on his new album Adios/Hits double-pack: Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife was on the first album that I owned, This Is Glen Campbell, I was mad on him as a kid. He also enters with a song that I loved at that period, a cover of the Nilsson hit, Everybody’s Talking from the movie Midnight Cowboy, and is one of the last tracks Glen recorded for his final album.

Fleetwood Mac have 2 new tracks joining their Rumours classic (The Chain) though they are labelled Buckingham/McVie. Don’t trust labels, the Mac did some of them at their last concert at the O2 – I was there! And finally, Scissor Sisters pop back (with MNDR) after being away a while, hooray! 13 years since they first topped my chart….

4th June 2017

It’s Vinai for a 4th week on top, firing off a fighting challenge from Keith Urban, not to mention the best track on Sgt Pepper, back on top of the UK charts a record breaking 50 years on. there aren’t enough superlatives to cover The Beatles achievements, suffice to say She’s Leaving Home topped my chart on one of the album’s regular revivals, it was a fave in 1977 when Bryan Ferry covered it, and when I bought Sgt Pepper for the first time (vinyl of course). A music expert was on telly last night explaining the melody style is a centuries-old tradition, with roots in European folk music. Whatever, it’s one of the most glorious melodies ever written, and attached to some heart-breakingly touching lyrics. About time it was covered tropical-Alan-Walker-stylee and became a hit.

Guess who’s the highest new entry just behind Noel Gallagher guest on Gorillaz Power? Yes, bruv Liam has a solo record (most likely his best song) in at 29. Elkie Brooks rockets into the 40 with her best track since Gasoline Alley back in 1983, and Cigarettes After Sex sound like they should be on the new Twin Peaks soundtrack, and into the 40.

It’s Vinai for a 3rd week on top, holding off Gorillaz from a second chart-topper, as Portugal The Man hits a new chart peak for him at 6. Steps hit the exact chart position the original Benny Andersson Band hit with the same song, at 20, and highest new entry is the closing track from the FA Cup BBC coverage, it’s Chase & Status and Blossoms together on a goodie.

Highest climber are The Charlatans with some fab guitar from Johnny Marr, who’s been working his magic for 34 years now, and most recently at the Royal Albert Hall for the Pet Shop Boys charity gig. Fab. Glen Campbell’s Guardians Of The Galaxy oldie from 1977 goes up, as his new lead track from his final album, Adios, recorded before his alzheimers reached the final stages, enters at 59. You can hear it in his voice, but Glen is a legend for me.

Another lost musician brings in The Allman Brothers Band to my charts for the first time, I think, rather shockingly, and it’s their instrumental great Jessica which pays tribute to Cher’s ex Greg Allman. Miley Cyrus is back after a break, Plan B is back after an even longer break, and Elkie Brooks is back after an even longer longer break – well over 20 years since she released something new that impressed me, and extends her chart run here to 40 years. Not bad.

21st May 2017

It’s VINAI still at one for a second week, holding off Hurts who have spent 2 weeks at 2, a second Gorillaz top 3 of the year, utterly different to the last one, and the highest new entry in at 4 for Keith Urban with Carrie Underwood. Both are huge in Country music, and neither of them has ever made my charts. If ya gonna do it, do it big!

The Beatles Abbey Road track goes top 10 – it would be quicker to list the ones that havent made my top 10 than have, but they topped my first ever chart with Hey Jude almost 49 years ago, when I was a foetus. Portugal The Man is back with a bang, his second top 20, at 15 with the retro-sounding Feel It Still. Batman & Robin rocket into the top 20 – and look they are being chased by Kryptonite at 24. Good thing Superman isn’t on the record too! Agy has a 46 place sprint into the 20, Thomas Rhett gets a 3rd top 40, and Nicki Minaj gets 2 new entries! Actually she does lends a quick rap to DNCE’s 3rd hit, and Katy Perry’s 3rd hit in this week’s chart.

The Charlatans are back! 27 years on since they brought their brand of fab 60’s infused Madchester Britpop into the charts, while Muse and Paramore also return after a much less long lay-off. 11 years away from my charts for the Charlatans, in fact. Finally, the late Chris Cornell joins Robert Miles in my chart in what I hope is not a 90’s pop star trend, both were not old, with Soundgarden sneaking in with their classic record.

14th May 2017

In from nowhere a belting 2016 track from an Italian production duo I’ve never heard of: Vinai. maybe that makes up for Italy not winning Eurovision as expected by the bookies. Their track is in at 52 here, along with a host of Euro-tracks, headed up by the winner, the lovely ballad by the Portugal brother-sister singer-writer low-key and non-manufactured charm of Salvador Sobral in at 30. Had I compiled a top 200 current fave tracks (too much hard work!) the UK entry would not feature in it…

Another electronic music duo are in at 12, The Knocks, with a goodie. Knock Knock Who’s There, as Mary Hopkin once said in her 1970 UK Eurovision song (now I could hum that one!) – answer: no-one, just The Knocks. The late Robert Miles has his 2 great singles enter my chart, topped by One And One in at 18, still lovely. Highest climber is a mid-70’s American hit from Guardians Of The Galaxy, I’m very into Wham Bang Shang-A-Lang right now. In fact I’d rate it higher than both Bang Shang-A Lang by The Archies (1968) and Shang A Lang by The Bay City Rollers (1974) but not quite up to Wham! standards.

There aren’t enough songs about superheroes. There just aren’t. We’ve had Supergirl (Graham Bonney) and Donovan’s Sunshine Superman (which also mentioned Green Lantern), Batdance (Prince’s movie theme mash-up), well at long last there’s another goodie to add: Batman & Robin, all about a naughty dream. Fun n fab, and in at 32 for the wonderfully puntastically-named Cazzie Opeia & Jin x Jin (a swedish/kpop hookup) a singalong a la Charli X.

7th May 2017

2 weeks on top for Weezer, just holding a revived Paper Route, both very exciting tracks, as is Drones Club into the 10. Lush Gorillaz also hits 10 for 2 consecutive top 10’s, Busted & Blue showing they have got the power (and were on Graham Norton singing that track to prove it). TLC and Snoop shoot up into the 20, yay! Drake overcomes my usual ambivalence and also grabs a 3rd or 4th top 20, Passionfruit is actually quite understated and non-annoying.

Steps take that Bjorn & Benny song back into the 40 5 years on, and keep the 20-years-run going, as Mr Blue Sky (a former chart topper) returns along with The Chain (a former top 20) both dating from 1976/7 and both featuring in fab scenes in Guardians Of The Galaxy, along with already charting 1977 hit Southern Nights, and the only track I’ve never charted before (as I’d never heard of it) Wham Bam from Silver.

30th April 2017

It’s Weezer on top. They took Buddy Holly to 10 in 1995, Hash Pipe to 5, and Island In The Sun to 8 in 2001, and last charted in 2008, but 22 years late they finally get a number one with fab hooky inspirational Feels Like Summer. Hurts have topped twice before, in 2013 with Calvin Harris, and in 2015 with song Wings. Band Wings topped my charts in 1972, Emeli Sande topped last year with the song Hurts, so will the band Hurts get a 3rd to bring it full circle? At the mo they are up at 2.

Highest new entry is a 3rd top 20 in a few weeks for Gorillaz, a gorgeous album track called Busted and Blue. Busted and Blue are also bands, though only Blue has topped my chart (Fly By II), spoiling my theme…! This Ole House was a Shakin Stevens hit. Happily, Rick Astley hasn’t covered that one, he’s done a very Ragnbone Man styled track which is possibly his best record since Never Gonna Give You Up. Rick on a roll! In at 24.

Drake shoots up to 34 with Passionfruit. Yes, I know, his first top 40 here for 2 or 3 years after I went right off his mega-autotuning-based recent over-rated drones. 5 years on since he hit 4 with Rihanna – Take Care. TLC are back! With Snoop filling in for the late lamented Left-Eye, and like Weezer, debuting in the mid-90’s. TLC only had to wait 5 years to top my chart though (Waterfalls, 1999). Good to have ’em back, it’s been a gap of 15 years!

Record Store day has an influx of oldie faves this week, while Guardians Of The Galaxy adds another soundtrack oldie – and I’ve yet to see the film I expect to be my top film of 2017 till Star Wars (no expectations to live up to then!) – Glen Campbell’s Southern Nights, originally hit my top 10 in 1977. Paul Weller is back, for a smooth 40 years of chart success since The Jam popped in, also in 1977. Amy MacDonald is also back, but she’s only had a mere 10 years of chart entries.

23rd April 2017

It’s Paper Route, a Nashville band that sound nothing Country at all, and not unlike The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy at their peak, on top with the fab Chariots. Love that climax. That knocks off Gorillaz fab Power and holds off Buckingham-McVie aka Fleetwood Mac as shoulda-been at 3, back at their melodic best. Highest new entry is Drone Club, an anonymous British band (presumably) at 12, just ahead of Hurts, powering back with another epic EDM track, albeit this one with a tinge of current Tropical/EDM vibes (obviously learnt from Gaga – back at the lower end of the chart – and Maroon 5, that adopting new music sounds is a way of getting attention).

A huge sprint for Thumbs, as Sabrina Carpenter tales a very Black & Gold-ish/Aguilera-ish dance track into the 20, just ahead of a 2nd Gorillaz track, giving Mavis Staples her first top 30 since 1974. That’s a helluva chart gap! Texas get a new top 40, very 60’s girl-group, off the new album as the first single exits the 40. Harry Styles grabs a solo entry, following where Zayn trail-blazed, albeit with a power rock ballad. Blondie extend their run of hits this year to 2, some 37 years on from debuting in 1978. Talking of oldies, a track that never charted in the UK (or my charts) pops in off the new Guardians Of The Galaxy soundtrack. I’m sure I’ll love it, and Silver’s song, even more – I didn’t know the track. Drake’s back. I swore I wouldn’t, but I have! Also, Steps get a second entry with an Abba-related song which previously charted in 2009 and peaked at 20 for The Benny Andersson Band, who wrote it. Steps always were wannabe Abba’s…

Gorillaz grab a second chart-topper over a decade on from the last one, Dare – that time it was Shaun Ryder giving a helping hand, this time it’s old rival Noel Gallagher and Jehnny Beth on support. Noel has had 4 chart-toppers with Oasis, and another on support for the Chemical Brothers. Highest new entry in at 2, and a record and act I’d never heard of 24 hours ago, is Bird – if you like Sugababes circa Round Round thumping dance then this may be one for you – and a new female act debut single.

Vitalic 80’s-influenced dance fabbie goes top 10, and London Grammar’s best record to date gives them a first top 10 track, while Weezer hit 9, and a 4th top 10, 9 years since they last charted and 21 years since they first did it. In at 19 it’s a new duo. I say new – it’s Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie with a brand new tuneful Mac-ish track. By rights it should be the new Fleetwood Mac single lead for a new Fleetwood Mac album featuring the classic Rumours line-up for the first time in nearly 30 years as Christine returns to the fold. Sadly, Stevie Nicks seems to have decided it’s not really a combined group effort (presumably as she has no songs or contribution) so we have instead an elderly duo debut. Lindsey, Stevie’s ex, first charted with Mac back in 1976 and as a duo with Stevie (Buckingham Nicks), while Christine was lead vocalist with Chicken Shack who hit with I’d Rather Go Blind in 1969 – so a whopping 48 year span of chart success with new material after a gap of 20 years. Christine is the ex-wife of John McVie, of Fleetwood Mac. Any mention of Mac leads to a massive list of soap opera references…!

Future Islands oldie is knocked off the top of my chart, but the newie (Cave) enters the 40, and JK aka Jamiroquai gets a second one this year, he must be on Cloud 9. Ditto Clean Bandit, and Nancy Sinatra with another oldie. Following a fabulous concert at the Royal Albert Hall with Johnny Marr and the London Symphony Orchestra, chock-fulla lush strings, Pet Shop Boys pop back with the 2 most-effective tracks, It’s Alright in it’s original single form (very different from the album version) from 1989, and Left To My Own Devices, the epic orchestral delight that kicked off the evening, here in a new Super-Tour version due out any day now.

9th April 2017

Its Future Islands on top as I get to see that amazing live performance from David Lettermans show a few years back – and coincidentally the band are back with a new album, and enter The Cave from it as well. Gorillaz also grab another entry with soul legend Mavis Staples and her second entry of 2017 as guest vocalist her last song oddly had the same title as the track held at 2 for Gorillaz. Exactly 45 years since she grabbed a number 3 in my charts with her dad and sister I’ll Take You There.

Not much movement this week as im on holiday in Gran Canaria but Vitalic leap up, as does London Grammar, into the 20, and Martin Jensen into the 40. Highest new entry is 90’s veteran act Weezer, well over 20 years since Buddy Holly debuted, now it Feels Like Summer. Mike + The Mechanics are also back after years away, and 32 years since Silent Running hit my top 10 – though if you count Mike Rutherford’s career in Genesis he first charted in 1974 when he knew what he liked in my wardrobe. I should probably rephrase that…! That leaves a bit of banging bhangra popping in at 63. I like to be varied…

2nd April 2017

It’s Love for a second week on top just holding off Gorillaz lyrics for the moment and a storming track that needs to be a single ASAP, leaving them just one short of grabbing a second Number One (Dare was the last one). Gentle On My Mind makes my top 10 for Alison Krauss, the third version to do that since Dean Martin first did it in 1969. A pop track that should be getting some Spotify love (but isnt) is at 10, it gets Under Your Skin.

The late Leonard Cohen gets his biggest ever chart hit here, Take That add to their numerous top 20 tracks, Lana Del Ray grabs another, too, and so do Texas, who have had more than the pair of them put together. Probably. Veteran sixty-somethings Sparks are also back in at 30 with new quirky track Hippopotamus, for a sweet 43 years of being different from anyone else, right from the day they entered my charts in on high from nowhere on one hearing with This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us, one of those “Eh what was that!?” showstopper moments.

Lower down, a batch of current chart hits finally find a gap to sneak in, along with some oldies, CCR feature in the Kong movie, along with the Hollies CCR copycat track (the best thing about the film by far!), the late Chuck Berry and Joannie Sledge enter with some fave oldies, and The Beatles rocket into the top 30 with the gorgeous Abbey Road harmony track Because: beacuse the album’s just charted again, and because it’s featured effectively in a current advert and because I’ve never charted it before, and if it’s OK for Drake to stuff the singles chart with 22 album tracks, it’s more than OK for me to stuff my chart with non-Drake album tracks. So there!

My 1984 Charts – September

Lower Gardens Bournemouth

Lower Gardens Bournemouth

4th September 1984

Stevie gets his 4th Number One, and keeps on with the tradition of those topping my chart not actually being his best records. Ah well, it’s still very popular though I’m well over it now. At 3, fluttering up the charts, it’s Malcolm McLaren getting his biggest hit to date, and at 7 Bucks Fizz return to the top 10 for a 3-year run of great pop singles. Elton also adds to his massive haul of Top 10 hits with another record I’m largely over these days, more annoying than fun.

Highest new entry at 19 is Depeche Mode getting well into bondage, presumably of the industrial-sounding type, and sneaking up on a high-flying Spandau track. The Smiths climb 28 places to 22, Morrissey claiming it was really nothing, but it actually was something – it stays ahead of Agadoo! Morrissey’s announcement he has been having cancer treatment explains a lot, such as the cancelled show I had tickets for, and I wish him well as soon as possible.

At 24, Heaven 17 are all about Sunset Now, one that sounded good enough for a high new entry, and then got promptly forgotten. The Jacksons join Michael, and mate Rockwell, inside the Top 40, and it really looks like Torture. Depeche I’m sure would approve. At 53, The Specials deliciously sly What I Like Most About You, so sweet-sounding, so back-stabbing! Lyndsey Buckingham has a solo break again, after his 1982 Number 1 with the gorgeous Trouble, and much like Jameela feels a bit insane. Junior’s back with somebody at 59 – no not Kim Wilde, that’s in the future. OMD keep up the run of great singles at 67 with T T T Tesla Girls, and The Bluebells get a good follow-up with Cath, and Sade’s Smooth Operator slides smoothly in at 74. oooerrr missus!

On TV, Star Trek delight, and a new TV series called The Black Adder, with Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson and Brian Blessed, and which I really liked! Oldies? Laurel & Hardy. If you’re under 35 you may not be familiar with them as they were from the 1930’s, slapstick galore, and loveable. Once upon a time they were all over TV, but they were filmed in black and white and as such have now been banished all television stations along with all other black and white product. Youngsters whinge about it not being coloured, I say they are just racist!

In the miserable real world, hypochondria continued as part of my depression symptoms. I started writing up my 1979 American holiday diaries which I’d never got round to finishing – some of it was still fairly clear in my memory, some of it not so. Considered doing a one-year teaching course, made investigations, though not really suited to be a teacher I was well out of options. On Pop Quiz, old clips from 1974 led me to the conclusion that “my” era was 1971 to 1974, age 13 through 16 – I think that’s everybody’s era age-wise. That’s my theory, what is mine, that is the theory that, cough, is mine, and which is my theory, cough. cough. Sorry, Python movie this week on TV.

11th September 1984

A new number one and it’s Malcolm McLaren doing what the Sex Pistols never managed – and with rap opera, sort-of. I’ve sat through Madame Butterfly, performed by a Russian opera group, and was bored witless at the inanity of the lyrics, the plot and the lack of tunes. This record is all you need, trust me. Highest new entry, exactly 5 years after peaking at 5, and it’s back at 5: it’s Sister Sledge following up their own B Side Top 10 with the classic A Side. Lost In Music? Too right!

The Smiths get another Top 10, hooray, and Astrud Gilberto and Miami Sound Machine keep a double-latin presence high joining them in the 10. A big leap for Kraftwerk, a year after charting first, up to 17 – obviously all that cycling gives it stamina. Lyndsey Buckingham gets another solo Top 20, as he goes insane at 19, up 39 places. Pity it wasn’t a hit. Highest new record to enter is The Adventures with their 2nd hit, Another Silent Day – another silent non-hit, sadly. Ditto The Specials at 29, as my chart starts to depart from the hits a little. Robin Gibb had a few big chart hits (for me) so here’s Barry with his own, Shine Shine at 33. Bowie follows up his Chic-tastic dance hat-trick of number ones with the more Bowie-esque Blue Jean at 40, thought to be disappointing at the time, but I liked it!

Level 42 are back at 42, Sade’s up to 43, Diana Ross has another minor hit (15 years into her run), Black Uhuru pose a serious question, to which I reply, don’t ask me! Prince’s signature dirge, I mean, TUNE, follows up the sublime When Doves Cry and plugs his movie nicely. I still don’t get the appeal…! Animal Nightlife were a smooth jazzsoul Brit band who had posters for the single splashed everywhere. Or rather posters of the fetching lead singer showing his asset off. A good record regardless, if largely forgotten these days. The Associates keep up the chart entries, Tom Robinson covers Steely Dan, and U2 enter with a top-notch passionate epic, the one that catapulted them from indie rock to stadium rock: Pride (In The Name Of Love) is classic. No less.

In my life: baby Vicki keeping me awake in the middle of the night (poorly), striking miner brother working where he could, dentist (a nightmare! Total dentist coward, that’s me, childhood traumas), friends Paul & Sheila invited me to Rotherham for their engagement do. NAAFI interview at Amesbury, popped into Stonehenge on the way. As you do. They wanted me to move to Amesbury (said I would, my body language prob said I wouldn’t). Family argument, drinking in the pub and lack of money the root cause, everyone upset. Not happy times at all…..

18th September 1984

Another week another new number one, this time the 5-year-old Lost In Music, giving Sister Sledge their only number one, and Nile Rodgers first and last chart-topping song for 29 years. No rush then! Ghostbusters goes up to 6 in the first of several chart runs, and Ray Parker Junior’s biggest hit 6 years into his hit-career. Kraftwerk get their 3rd Top 10 9 years after their first (Autobahn), and OMD go up 26 places TTTT Tesla Girls-in with another Top 10 – it’s unusual for them NOT to make my top 10, to be honest, in the 80’s.

Highest new entry is a major classic, Drive, in at 14 for The Cars 6 years on from debut hit My Best Friend’s Girl, and very different: this one is hauntingly gorgeous, with a disturbing video about mental illness which sent shivers up my spine, and still does. Brilliant record. The Bluebells meanwhile take Cath into the 20 for 3 in a row, The Specials make it 5 years of Top 20 hits, and U2 rocket to 24 from 73 with the awesome Pride.

Sade and Animal Nightlife break into the 40, along with Prince and Level 42, and new tracks include Aztec Camera, Shakatak, Nik Kershaw following-up hits, while Shaky gets an occasional chart-entry they tend to be minor ones: A Letter To You is 73. Jethro Tull is 74 in the lap of luxury, but that makes it a nice round 15 years since Living In The Past first hit my charts. Queen keep up the run of hits (never failed to chart in the 10 years since 7 Seas Of Rhye topped my chart in 1974) as Hammer To Fall slams in at 55. Which leaves the 2nd-best new entry: Together In Electric Dreams, Giorgio Moroders hit with Human Leaguer Phil Oakey. I’ve seen Human League do it live 6 or 7 times (always brilliant), and 3 weeks back I was dancing and singing along madly to it in a Spanish Opera House, for Duckies In Sitges. Fab!

TV? Mike Read’s Pop Quiz, two of my all-time classic fave comedies, Mel Brooks Young Frankenstein and James Garner in Support Your Local Sherrif, Star Trek doing a Shakespeare-themed episode (and rather fine too), and brand new sitcom Blackadder continues to delight me. A US mini-series repeat The Martian Chronicles is a poetic and evocatively nostalgic brilliant science fiction Ray Bradbury novel (or rather collection of short stories), the TV series much less-so but it has loads of big stars in it. When I first bought and read the book age 13 in Singapore it was called The Silver Locusts – which I still think suits it more, even though they are stories based on Mars.

Life? Saw Romancing The Stone at the cinema (a good adventure movie). Signed on at the DHSS, as always I was stupidly honest (I’m such a dick) and told the guestapo woman interrogating me about working a few hours at NAAFI. She got snotty, and stopped benefits to the tune of £4.50 when I’d earned a grand total of £4. So, the moral and message given out? Don’t bother trying to get work experience for pay as you’ll be financially worse-off. Still trying to work out the logic of that one…..Lesson learned, there were, I later found, ways around the system. Babysat tantrumming Vicki while Mark & Sue had a pub break, told ‘em to go anyway and she was fine with me till she went to sleep, kids are almost always mellow with me. I must remind of her that later this week Helped at youth club again, after a break away (more adults than kids though, which was more like a social club for grown-ups!) and fumed over a massive gas bill I was having to pay (£172!!) That was an effing fortune in those days and I was unemployed. I turned the heating and hot water off when I was in the house alone.

25th September 1984

2 weeks for Sister Sledge at 1, and Alphaville finally go top 3 after weeks at 4, but the big news is new at 4 – War War is stupid, and people are stupid: yes Boy George got a lot of stick for those simplistic lyrics, but I loved the sentiment (still do) and the record is sort-of oddly joyous, one of Culture Club’s final goodies as they unexpectedly hit a drug-influenced career-stopping brick wall. Sad!

OMD go top 5, The Cars get a 3rd top 10, and Adam Ant is back with a jolly spaceman tune – how could I not like it?! In at 20 for Apollo 9, the one he did at Live Aid to everyone’s disgust. Freddie Mercury gets his first solo hit with Love Kills at 27, and leapfrogs Queen’s latest rocker with a bit of camp disco. Also grim, politically, UB40 threaten to leave the country if Maggie gets in again: oh yeah? Great record though, and I agreed with every word in at 28, and a 4 years non-stop run of singles.

John Waite’s back at 34 with a well-known MOR rock ballad, Missing You, 6 years after hitting my number one in The Baby’s with Isn’t It Time: that’s a classic record, albeit obscure these days, and Missing You is merely quite good. Glen Frey joins in the solo fray, Sexy Girl at 50 and looking like The Eagles will get back together only when hell freezes over. Hey, it did….! Bronski have a shrill follow-up, can you tell me why? Marc Almond is yet another solo hitster with You Have at 55, Soft Cell sadly no more, Tina Turner’s back at 57 so you better be good to her, or else! One-time Be Bop Deluxe man Bill Nelson accelerates to 58, 8 years since Ships In The Night lit up my charts. The Mighty Wah! keep the hits coming, Frida has another shining solo hit at 71, Abba tragically no-more, though we didn’t know it then. Stephanie Mills get a follow-up hit 4 years late, and finally The Everley Brothers get their first chart hit with new material (being as they pre-dated my charts) thanks to Paul McCartney who donated a song. Thumbs-up Macca!

TV: Must mention Terrahawks again, loved Zelda and her Tina Turner fright-wig, and her idiot son. Loved the great little plot parodies of shakespeare (“a zeaf? a zeaf? My kingdom for a zeaf!”) and The Beatles (the cavern puts in an appearance). Under-rated, and frankly, over the heads of kids, most of the scripts! This was also Tony Blackburn’s last radio 1 show this week, Flowers In The Rain his first and last track – of course he’s still on radio 2 these days.

Life? Well, a big moment turned up in a letter from Dorset County Council: the job I didn’t get surveying highways, turns out someone dropped out before starting and they wanted me to start next week. This was a letter that did actually change my life, actually. It led to me being where I am now, and the start of the end of the depression, but of course it sent me into instant panic. As if that wasn’t enough drove to Winchester, Nottingham, Hucknell to friends Dave & Jane’s to stay, which was great and enjoyed Jane’s new paintings. Saturday was fun, then in the evening with mutual friend Julie off to Paul & Sheila’s in Rotherham for a gathering of fun games with their friends and relations – charades, pass the parcel, a great party and I didn’t want to go back to my life down south. Had to though, first day at work Monday…
